De gerund is een werkwoord met –ing erachter geschreven. Vaak als onderwerp van een zin:

Smoking is not allowed. Roken is verboden.Watching tv is all I do. Tv-kijken is alles wat ik doe.

Als regel komt de gerund ook na de werkwoorden:to avoid, to enjoy, to fancy, to finish, to give, to go on, to keep, to mind, to quit en to suggest.

Would you mind telling me what’s happening? (to tell)

Do you fancy going to the cinema tonight? (to go)

Meestal ook na de werkwoorden: to stop, to like, to love en to hate.

I love doing my homework in the weekend. (to do)She stopped studying when she had her first baby

De gerund wordt ook gebruikt na de uitdrukkingen:

It’s no good… =Het heeft geen zin…It’s no use… =Het heeft geen zin…Can’t/couldn’t help… =moeten…Can’t/couldn’t stand… =kan er niet tegen…

It’s no good complaining.It’s no use waiting for it to happen.We can’t help laughing about it.They couldn’t stand seeing us celebrate our victory.
