The Digestive System

What does it do?The Digestive system digests food to use as energy for your body. There are seven main organs that make up the digestive system. They are: - The Oral Cavity or (Mouth)- The Esophagus- The Stomach- The Small Intestine- The Large Intestine or (Colon)- The Rectum- The Anus

Let's take a look at each main organ in order to see how they work!

OrgansThe Oral Cavity or (mouth)

Is the first portion of the digestive system that receives food and begins digestion by mechanically breaking up the solid food particles into smaller pieces (chewing) and mixing them with saliva. Saliva is secreted from the mouth to help break down the food.

OrgansStomach

Is a elastic-like bag that holds your food after you eat. The stomach receives food from the esophagus. It stores and digests food by breaking the food into smaller pieces so that your body can use the vitamins and minerals from the food for its energy and nutrition.

Is the tube that continues to absorb the nutrients from the food obtained from the stomach.

OrgansSmall Intestine

Page 7: The Digestive System

Is the tube that receives and stores the waste or undigested food from the small intestine. The large intestine prepares the undigested food to be ejected from the body.

OrgansLarge Intestine or (Colon)

Page 8: The Digestive System

Is the organ that stores the solid feces. Feces is the waste product prepared in the large intestines that is to be ejected through the anus.

OrgansRectum

Page 9: The Digestive System

Is the organ in which the feces pass through to get ejected out of the body.

OrgansAnus

The Digestive SystemWhy is the Digestive System

important?Food is not the form of energy the body can use.  Food must be changed into a form of energy that can be used by the body.  This energy is changed and then absorbed by the blood and carried through out the body.
