The Lumiere Brothers0 The Lumiere Brothers were the creators of thecinema, The French brothers took Edisionskinetoscope and decided to design there own camera,which they called a cinmatographe.0 The first Public screening of the Lumieres brothersfilm was the 28th December 1895, this date isregarded as the start of the cinema.

The film is very basic in comparison to the sort of films made now, stayingon one subject for a long period of time with little content in the films, thisis the film which was showed on the 28th December 1895. 3. D.W Griffith0 A Director from Kentucky, US david griffith brought a narrative to cinema, giving his films a controversial aspect compared to other directors at the time. In his film Birth of a Nation in between scenes there is an interlude to explain the story or scene because there was no audio in the films. 4. This is Griffiths most recognised filmBirth of a Nation a very controversialfilm due to its very racist storyline. Itwas complained about by many differentagencys, in response to all the negativefeedback he released Intolerance a yearlater, which did not do as wellfiniancially but was praised by thecritics. 5. Sergei Eisenstein0 A Russian director & film theorist who was around the same sort of time as D.W Griffiths so created silent movies, he also made historical films such as Ivan the Terrible 6. Sergei Eisenstein was well known forhis use and knowledge of themontage, throughout many of hisfilms the montage was used at somepoint. 7. David Fincher0 An American director of this age unlike the other directors which have changed the way in which editing and films are produced. Fincher is well known for his distinctive editing styles. 8. This is a clip from Fight Club thisshows finchers editing style clearly,when the character is in pain itswitches to a second and 3rd locationwhich is in the characters mind, thiscreating a personal feel to the audiencewhich they can relate to. 9. How editing styles havechanged0 Since the Lumiere brothers the way in which a film is put together has changed dramatically from only being able to put single clips together to now being able to do practically anything with the way in which technology and the editing software has advanced.
