INTRODUCTION

Diesel Locomotive Works [DLW] is production unit under the ministry of railways. This was setup in collaboration with American Locomotive Company [ALCO] USA in 1961 and the first locomotive was rolled out in 1964.

DLW is only manufacture of diesel electric locomotive

with ALCO & General Motors [GM] based technologies in the words.

.DLW Manufactures ALCO and GM locomotives 3500 HP

and 4500 HP respectively.

DLW got its first ISO certification in 1997.

LOCOMOTIVE

A Locomotive is a railway vehicle that provides the motive power for a train.

The word locomotive originates from latin loco – “from a place” + latin motivus – “causing motions” and is shortest form of term locomotive engine.

The first sucessful locomotive were built by Cornish inventor Richard Trevithick in 1804.

PRODUCTION

DLW produces ALCO locomotives , GM locomotives .DLW has an annual production of 327 locomotives.

WORKSHOP

The DLW workshop is located in Varanasi in an area of about 300 Acers.

In the workshop the engines are produced and exported to about 10 countries in Asia.

Parts of the locomotive are made and assembled in different parts of workshop and then finally assembled to form the locomotive.

TRUCK MACHINE SHOP In this shop I have seen the how assemble the wheels in truck.

Firstly they shift the wheels in axles shaft with the help of wheel pressing upto exactposition.

Then the arrangement of axles and wheel assembly is mount on the truck (bogie) .

Truck is made by casting or machining with iron or alloys metals.

Now this assembly is transfer different sections where mount the TRACTION MOTOR .

And further it send into the frame section where joint the truck with the frame.

LIGHT ASSEMBELY SHOP

In LAS I have seen there are step by step process for the assembled the locomotive.

The complete locomotive is thus assembled before being send onwards for final testing and spray painting.

Tested engines are received from engine divison(Loco Frame Shop) and assembled trucks from Light Assembly Shop.

Important aligment like crankshaft deflections, compressor aligment and eddy current, cluth, radiator, fan etc. are

done during assembly stage.

LOCO PAINT SHOPIn the loco paint shop the loco is spray painted by

the air tight paint booth.

The cleaning in done by high pressure air and is known as air cutting.

First primer coating is done on loco and then after different coatings are done on the loco.

It takes 4-5 days for the completion of paint on one loco.

LIGHT MACHINE SHOP

This machine deals with the machining of small componet requiredfor power unit such as cam shafts, connecting rod, gears, levers, feulpumps supports, piston, nut and bolts, bushes, various shaft etc.

The Light Machine Shop divided into the following sections:

1.Shaper Section2.Lathe Section3.Milling Section4.Grinding Section5.Jig Section
