NAAL Principles

• Keep it simple• Keep it cheap• Make digitization a regular and routine part of the

library’s ongoing program• Keep project participants responsible for own

activities • Seek low maintenance and low administrative

costs• Rely on existing structures and relationships

NAAL is governed by an Advisory Council and this Council oversees all programs

Alabama Mosaic Users Group meets twice yearly to provide advice – anyone interested may participate

ADPNet has more formal oversightGovernance policy and technical specs are posted

on ADPNet Web site: http://www.adpn.org

We are not strangers to disasters. We regularly enjoy:

FLOODS

FIRES

TORNADOS

And of courseHURRICANES

We enjoy unnatural disasters, too! We have the usual construction miscues and the occasional broken water pipe.

Our rule of Thumb: --if it can break – it will—if it has water – it will flood the library.

Digital preservation combines policies, strategies and actions to ensure access to reformatted and born-digital content regardless of the challenges of media failure and technological change. The goal of digital preservation is the accurate rendering of authenticated content over time.

From “Definitions of Digital Preservation,” Preservation and Reformatting Section, Working Group on Defining Digital Preservation ALA Annual Conference, Washington, DC, June 24, 2007. See: www.ala.org/ala/alcts/newslinks/digipres/index.cfm

PURPOSE: to test the feasibility of adopting LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe) to establish a state-based, distributed, low cost, model for the long-term archival preservation of locally-created digital assets.

ADPNet: a private LOCKSS network

Page 15: NAAL Statewide Digitization Program

• LOCKSS = Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe• Based at Stanford University• Designed originally to preserve commercial e-

journals (public LOCKSS network)• Distributes and supports open source software• Now adapted to preserve locally created digital

content (private LOCKSS network)• Easy to install and maintain • Simple, robust, and secure• Excellent technical support

Page 18: NAAL Statewide Digitization Program

• ADPNet currently contains 41 digital collections (“archival units”) from all seven member institutions

• Over 300 gigabytes harvested to date• Network capacity: 1.5 terabytes (with

plans to grow)• Plenty of room for more collections• More collections on the way, including

audio and video files

Page 19: NAAL Statewide Digitization Program

Costs

I want one…..what do I need?• Partners – a minimum of 6 sites• Hardware: LOCKSS server and Web

server • Upgrades as network grows• Staff time: typically several hours per

month to monitor the network, add content, communicate with other members

• LOCKSS Alliance Fee

Page 20: NAAL Statewide Digitization Program

• Long term storage• Dark archive – in reference to data storage, a “dark

archive” is one that cannot be accessed by any users. Access to the data is either limited to a set few individuals or completely restricted to all. The purpose of a dark archive is to function as a repository for information that can be used as a failsafe during disaster recovery. http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/d/dark_archive.htm

A dark archive is generally meant to be used for the preservation of content that is accessible elsewhere

• Reliable and trusted • Redundant• Stable

Page 21: NAAL Statewide Digitization Program

• LOCKSS preserves all formats and genres in its original format and dynamically migrates the content to a newer format, if required, when the preserved content is needed for other uses.

• This solution offers significant advantages, see: http://www.lockss.org/lockss/How_It_Works

• ADPNet members can request assistance from the LOCKSS staff should cached content need to be migrated to another format.

Page 22: NAAL Statewide Digitization Program

OUR CHALLENGESBuilding awareness about digital preservation

Creating demand for a digital storage solution

Increasing participation

Possible exception from LOCKSS Alliance fee for small, poorly resourced institutions

Increasing storage capacity

Sustaining ADPNet long-term
