Here we are with Memorial Day weekend upon us once again and there have been precious few days to pull weed and catch up on all the planting we want to do. It seems that every time I can line up some free time with dry weather, I have to spend that time mowing the lawn. Assuming that it doesn’t rain, it looks like Memorial Day week-end will be the time to scramble to plant. Amusingly, this is really the time I’d be putting most of my “tropical” vegetables in anyway. .
Hopefully by the time you’re reading this, I’ll have fi nally gotten my tomatoes planted and I’ll be just about ready to get my peppers in. Peppers are more sensitive to soil temperature than all the other vegetable we plant. Peppers won’t perform well until SOIL temperatures are 65 degrees or higher. If the season is cool, I’ll enclose them in what I call a “pepperdome’. This is just a cute name for four stakes that I’ll wrap with horticultural fabric right to the ground covering my little pepper transplants. This fabric will trap heat and hold heat around the peppers on cool nights. Once summer weather arrives in earnest, I’ll remove the “pepperdome” and let the peppers bathe in direct sun-light. I also like to cover the soil beneath my peppers with black plastic to generate even more heat. If the summer gets really hot, I can cover the black plastic with straw to keep the soil temperature under control. In September, when temperatures start dropping, I’ll brush the straw back to let the sun warm up the plastic and soil again. There’s a little saying I use to remind myself not to plant my peppers too early: PLANTING PEPPERS PREMATURELY POSTPONES THE PERIOD OF PRIME PRODUCTION but PRO-VIDING PEPPERS WITH PROTECTION PERPETUATES PROFUSE, PROLONGED PRODUCTION.
Now I’m going to give you my annual rant about a strange gardening habits that I just can’t understand. It drives me crazy when I see someone who’s spent a lot of time (and probably money too) creating a beautiful fl owerbed or vegetable garden wa-tering it with a lawn sprinkler or hand-held sprayer. It’s all I can do sometimes to keep from pulling off the road and giving them a “tune up”. I know that this is a habit borne of ignorance but it really isn’t at all good for the plants. Somehow the idea of spraying your plants with water seems “refreshing” and has a lot of appeal to people. Also, we’ve all seen those ads on TV that show the nice folks at some “mega warehouse chain” mist-ing the fl owers. While it creates a lovely visual effect for the TV viewer, it is one of the worst possible things you can do to your plants. Why?
Remember that plants absorb moisture and nutrients with their ROOTS to re-place moisture lost by the leaves through evaporation. When you wet the leaves, the plant isn’t able to grow until the leaves dry off. But this isn’t the worst of it! When you wet the leaves (especially in warm weather), you’re creating the perfect environment for fungal diseases to incubate and grow. Can anyone say “powdery mildew”?
In the vegetable garden, problems with plants that produce fl owers but never set fruit can almost always be traced to “spray-watering”. Spraying the plants with water washes the pollen out of the fl owers. Without this pollen, the bees can’t pollinate the fl owers. No pollen, no fruit or vegetables.
There are no good reasons to “spray-water” unless you’re shooting a commer-cial for one of those ignorant “mega warehouse chains” and there are many good reasons not to (cold water shocks the plants washes away pollen and promotes fungal diseases). As far as I’m concerned, the only acceptable way to water is to get the water into the soil while wetting the leaves and fl owers as little as possible. Soaker hoses can do this in permanent beds but I usually use my trusty watering wand. You’ve all seen these at the garden center and you probably think it’s just a handy device for watering hanging baskets that are too high to reach. In reality, the purpose of these wands is to help you direct water down into the soil among your plants without having to bend over with the hose. My watering wand is always attached to the end of my hose. Remember: lawn sprinklers have NO business anywhere in a fl ower or vegetable garden. Your hand held spray gun has no purpose in the yard at all unless you’re washing your car….end of rant and thanks for the read.Debra Audette

Schultz Greenhouse and Perennial farm originally started out as Schultz Farm in Colonie. From 1940’s - 1960’s Schultz Farm grew large quantities of vegetables for the wholesale market. In the mid-sixties Albany County expanded the airport and took our farm through emanate domain. In 1968 we moved to Glenville and started selling fresh produce and pansies to the public at our farm stand. We began selling more and more owers and stopped growing vegetables in 1986 and focused on only owering plants. In 1998 we expanded our retail garden center from 5,000 sq. ft. of selling space to over 20,000 sq. ft.
Today Schultz Greenhouse uses over 40,000 sq. ft. of greenhouse growing space to produce high quality annuals, perennials, vegetable plants and herbs for the retail market. We grow the largest selection of vegetable plants in the area, selling more than 15,000 tomato plants each year for the home gardener. And because of our farming back-ground, we know which vegetable varieties are best for this area and have the knowledge to ensure that your gardening experience is a successful one.
Growing our own plants gives us the ability to keep current with the latest plant varieties. We have the area’s largest selection of wave petunias, as well as, the latest in the Proven Winners plant line. Combine that with over 400 varieties of Perennials and Schultz Greenhouse is your one stop shop for quality landscape plants for your home and garden.
Our slogan is–Schultz Greenhouse “Where Quality Grows”–but it’s not just a slogan. We use the highest quality soil combined with the best seed and plant varieties which leads to a much higher quality plant for our customers. And quality plants are what’s needed to be successful at gardening.
If you are looking for something new and different for your home, garden or patio stop by and we will be glad to help you put the right plant in the right place.

Szymczak and Evans Family General Dentistry, PC is a family business established in 2009 by Don P. Evans, DDS and Rebecca K. Szymczak Evans, DDS.
Drs. Evans met in dental school and by the time they graduated, they were married and had plans to start a practice together.
Drs. Evans were blessed with a daughter, Guenevere, in January 2010 and spend much of their free time trying to keep up with her.
The owners enjoy practicing dentistry, not only because they fundamentally focus on technique, but being a business owner gives them a chance to give back to their community. They look forward to developing long standing relationships with their patients. Drs. Evans are committed to excellent patient treatment.
When they are not spending time with their daughter, Dr. Rebecca Evans enjoys cooking, sewing and gardening and Dr. Don Evans enjoys brushing up on his juggling and magic and watching a good movie.

A century ago, cars were luxuries. Nowadays, cars are necessities that few people can do without. In many cases, there are two or more vehicles per household.
Purchasing a new car can be a stress-ful process. Individuals don’t want to overspend, and dealers hope to get the most money. Finding that balance typically takes a little negotiating, a process many people dread.
Buying a car also involves know-ing the difference between invoice price, sticker price and other termi-nology salespeople use. Doing some research before visiting a dealership
can make the negotiation process go much more smoothly. It can also help a person get a better price on a car or truck. Here are some tips to follow.
* Think about full price, not monthly payment. Dealerships have fi nancing managers that can tweak numbers to get a payment that fi ts a person’s budget. For those who walk into negotiations saying they want to pay $250 per month, the salesperson can adjust the term of a loan or the interest rate to realize this payment amount. What he or she may not be doing is lowering the price. Instead
of shoppers saying what they want to pay per month, they should indicate what they want to pay on the actual price of the car.
* Consider shopping the “internet department” of the dealership. Many car dealerships have a sales fl oor and then a separate, behind-closed-doors department geared toward internet sales. These salaried salespeople are interested in moving a lot of stock to make the dealership money rather than focusing on their own indi-vidual commissions. Therefore, they may be able to give knowledgeable shoppers a more desirable deal. Fur-
thermore, most of the legwork when buying a car can be done through e-mail or phone calls, rather than hag-gling at a sales desk.
* Buy used. Cars depreciate in value the moment they are driven off the lot. In the fi rst two years, some mod-els decrease in value by 25 to 40 per-cent. Instead of paying the premium for a new car, purchased a pre-owned vehicle that is a few years old. Many carry decent warranties, or an ex-tended warranty can be included in the purchase.
* Don’t buy beyond your means. It’s easy for shoppers to be blindsided by the glitz and glam at many dealer-ships. A single person walking in and buying a 7-passenger extended SUV may be purchasing more than he or she needs. Similarly, he or she may get extra features that aren’t needed. For example, many navigation sys-tems that come as extras with cars are pricier than aftermarket, portable GPS devices that are just as effective and easily plugged into a vehicle’s A/C adapter.
* Take care of your credit rating. Good credit means a better fi nancing rate. Very few people can walk into a dealership and pay cash for their cars. This means taking out a loan with the fi nancing department or an outside bank. The better interest rate comes to those with a higher credit score. Individuals should keep track of their credit scores and any blights on a record. Not only will this help with saving money on a car, it will affect other purchases as well.
* Price of car affects insurance, too. Some of the higher-end ve-hicles or sports cars come with a big ticket price -- and also a higher insurance rate. If the goal is saving money, look for a reliable car with good safety ratings. This will help reduce costs on the vehicle as well as insurance.
