Fear of Seeds. I deal with a lot of beginning vegetable gardeners when I’m out at the garden centers. Among these well-meaning folks there seems to be a nearly universal fear of planting seeds. They’ll come to the garden center looking for corn or beans already started in a six pack. Six corn plants won’t provide much of a crop and an entire packet of corn seeds (enough to grow several small rows of corn) can be purchased for the same price as six plants. When I suggest this to the new gardener the response is usually “I never have luck with seeds” or “I can’t get into all that.”

I have to say that there really isn’t anything at all difficult about starting seeds directly in the garden...much easier than starting seeds indoors in winter. Some seeds like tomatoes and peppers must be started inside in March but the real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from crops that we seed directly in the garden. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. First, go to the garden center and pick up the “Vegetable Schedule”. It is a wonderful resource for the beginning gardener showing when the different plants and seeds should be planted. You can get one at any Hewitt’s Garden Center.

Let’s take a look at beans...according to the vegetable schedule you can start sowing them in early May or anytime through the third week of July. As you can see, there’s plenty of time to start a crop or two of beans. Now let’s take a look at a bean seed pack. These are bush beans so no support is necessary. The front of the pack is pretty but the back has complete growing instructions. This is pretty simple stuff honest!Let’s go step by step. I’ve made a little trench 2” deep as per the instructions and placed the seeds at the bottom. Then I cover them with 2” of soil and water them in. I like to use potting soil to cover them since it looks different than the garden soil so I know I’m watering the right area. Now I just need to keep them moist and they’ll sprout in a week or less. After a couple of weeks they’ll be all up and sprouted. I had to thin them out by removing any that were closer together than 6” spacing the seed pack indicated I should have. Let me illustrate “’thinning out” the crop using Mesclun Mix...those tasty greens we pay so much for at the market. Mesclun Mix is a blend of lettuce and other greens. As you can see the seeds are tiny. I followed the directions and planted them too close together knowing that I’d be back later to thin them out. They came up too close together so I need to pull some out. This is the part beginners have trouble with but, if you don’t thin them out, they will crowd each other and the crop won’t be as good. Sometimes less is more.

That’s pretty much it. All seeds work the same way...corn, beets, radishes and so on. All you need is a little patch of soil and the ability to read the back of a seed pack. Learn to use your Vegetable Schedule to time your plantings. Once you go through a season with well timed plantings, you’ll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. Learn to read the information on the seed packs and trust the seeds. This is the way to really make your garden pay maximum dividends.

“It’s too late to plant s vegetable garden.” This is also something beginners like to believe...that they’ve missed the opportunity to have a vegetable garden once Memorial Day has passed. If you spend some time with the vegetable schedule you’ll soon see that vegetables aren’t something that you “plant in the spring and harvest in the fall”. There is a huge planting season that won’t even start until late June and into July.

As our early crops of spinach, lettuce and others bolt in the summer’s heat, it is time to rip them out to open up space for the crop we sow in summer. Here’s a little list of “mid summer sowers” and you can refer to your Vegetable Schedule for even more. It is easy to forget the garden in summer but this is your best opportunity to really take advantage of summer heat to get fall crops up quickly for a large fall harvest. Many cool season greens that mature in September taste better than their spring counterparts so summer sowing is a huge opportunity.

• Basil-Sow seeds late June through late July. • Beans-Sow seeds of quick varieties (generally bush types) until 3rd week of July. • Broccoli-Sow seeds until mid July. • Brussels Sprouts-Sow seeds until mid July. • Cabbage-Plant transplants through mid July. • Carrots-Sow seeds through mid July. • Escarole, endive-Sow seeds early July through August. • Kale-Sow seeds through first week of August. • Kohlrabi-Sow seeds through first week of August. • Lettuce-Sow in groups two weeks apart from mid July through September 1st. • • Mustard-Sow seeds mid July to mid August. • Parsley-Sow seeds mid June through mid August. • Peas-Sow seeds in early to mid July. • Radish-Sow seeds mid July to early September at two week intervals. • Spinach-Sow seeds late July to early August. • Summer squash-Sow seeds until mid July. • Turnip-Sow seeds late June to early August.

Seed packs are cheap so play around with them. There are plenty at the garden center so take some time to read the backs. Pay attention to the “days to harvest” information. As of now we have at least 100 days left until frost. You can have a crop of beans in harvest in 50 to 60 days or radishes in less than 30! Many crops like Brussels Sprouts and Swiss Chard aren’t bothered by frost and can be harvested into October most years. There’s something quite rewarding about starting your crops from seed right in the garden. Try it out...you’ll be hooked in no time. Thanks for the read.

PRAYER TO THEBLESSED VIRGIN

(Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. (favor granted) E.V P.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE

CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stutter-ing. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stut-tering Foundation is avail-able free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERSCAPITAL DISTRICT - Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for men-tors in Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga, and Rensselaer Coun-ties. We are the oldest and largest provider of one-to-one youth mentoring services in the United States. In the Capital Region, we have been matching caring adults with local chil-dren for 50 years. Our mentoring relationships are proven to be a positive influence on the life of a child. Currently, we serve over 500 children, but there are over 100 more waiting for men-tors. If you want to learn more about volunteering, contact Alex at 862-1250 x15, or by email at [email protected].

ELKS THURSDAY NIGHT BINGOBALLSTON LAKE - The Clifton Park Elks hold bingo every Thursday evening (except major holidays). There are a wide range of games including a progressive jackpot and ‘Bonus Ball’. Proceeds help support the Elks’ Charity Programs. The Lodge is located at 695 MacElroy Road, Ballston Lake. Ad-mission is $5 plus game cards (various prices). Doors open at 6:00pm and the first game starts promptly at 7:00pm. Re-freshments are available for sale. For additional information visit www.cliftonparkelks.com or call (518) 877-5200.
