SUMMER SPECIALSUMMER SPECIALMATCH & BEAT Any Written MATCH & BEAT Any Written

Competitor’s PriceCompetitor’s Price

It looks like summer’s heat is waning, and I’m looking forward to cooler nights

and days. The days are getting short enough that I actually realized it was getting dark a

little earlier… around 8 PM…not real early but just noticeable. There are other clues that

the growing season is gradually winding down. The vegetables that take the longest to ma-

ture are fi nally providing their harvest. Of course sweet corn comes to mind and tomatoes,

of course. Speaking of sweet corn, I went to my favorite farm stand to get some to prepare

for some guests last weekend. When I walked up to the area where they normally have the

corn for sale, there was none to be seen. I was stunned. I mean this is the place where I

have been buying corn for years…they always have corn and usually the best because it is

so fresh. I was disappointed but I went inside their main building since I also need a fruit

pie. There, inside the air-conditioned shop was the pile of corn. “So, this is where you’re

hiding the corn!” I exclaimed to the owner. “Are you kidding, I had to bring it in here…it’s

WAY too hot outside for corn.” There you have it…someone who “gets it” about corn. It

was a great reminder of why I make the drive there to buy corn when there are closer places

to buy corn. I wish I could tell you the name of the place but it wouldn’t be fair to all the

other farm stands selling excellent sweet corn. You’ll just have to fi nd one in your area that

knows how to grow and keep the corn as fresh as possible. To give you an idea of what a

fanatic I am about sweet corn, I brought that corn home and put it in a cooler and covered

it with ice until it was time to cook it. Man, was that some good corn!

It is hard to imagine, after these lovely months of enjoying the outdoors and our

gardens, that it will shortly be time for the growing season to end. Even as they say fare-

well to the waning season, real gardeners are working away on projects to make next year’s

growing season even better than the one just passing. There are bulbs to plant, perennials

to divide and shrubs that might need to be relocated.

Of course, the warm days and cool nights of late summer and early fall make it

second only to spring as a planting season. As a gardener, I look forward to this “bonus”

planting season. This is the time of year I like to look for bargains as the garden centers dis-

count shrubs and perennials to move them out before winter. Often the plants I get during

these fall sales don’t look like much with the leaves falling off as they go into dormancy, but

as long as the roots and stems are in good shape, I’m willing to take a chance. Sometimes

the bargains are so good that I buy plants that I have no plan for but the price is so good that

I can’t pass them up. These plants will often have to spend the winter in their pots while I

come up with a plan for them. I’m not afraid to winter-over perennials in pots or balled-in-

burlap shrubs or trees. It’s all a question of knowing how to bring them through the harsh

winter ahead.

First, scout out a sheltered location. We know that our prevailing wind comes from

the west and north. The east facing wall of a garage, shed or even the house is a great spot.

The building will block the cold, dry air that can dehydrate our wintering plants. I’ve got

a 4’ high retaining wall on the western side of my vegetable garden that works well for this

purpose. Parallel to the wall, I’ll dig a trench deep enough to set my potted and balled bar-

gains into. If I happen to have a tree that is so tall that it sticks out above the wall, I’ll tip it

on its side so the branches are below the top of the wall, protected from the wind. Then I’ll

fi ll around the pots or root balls with loose soil and tamp it down well. Until winter sends

my treasures into complete dormancy, I’ll keep an eye out that they don’t dry out, but with

rain such a regular feature this time of year, that’s not of much concern. As early as I can

in spring, I’ll fi nd places in my landscape for my fall bargains and plant them (adding bone

meal, of course). So now, even though I take advantage of the fall planting season as much

as I can, I know I can keep any leftovers safe through winter even if I run short of time this

fall. Thanks for the read.

EYES ON HEALTH

It’s hard to believe that the end of summer is just around the corner, and that means BACK TO SCHOOL TIME.

Research has shown time and again that 80% of what children learn in the classroom is obtained through the sense of VISION. Healthy eyes and excellent vision are indeed needed if your child, grand-child, niece or nephew is to excel in today’s challenging academic environment.

A professional eye-health examination and vision analy-sis by an eye doctor well-versed in pediatric eye care should be at the top of every parent’s back-to-school check-list.

Our of ce provides expert, state-of-the-art eye and vi-sion care for children of all ages from pre-school to col-lege, and we have continued to do so in the Glenville/Burnt Hills are for over 35 years. Our end-of-summer appoint-ment slots are lling up quickly, so please consider making an appointment for your child before the back-to-school rush, which has already started. Also feel free to call the of- ce with any questions or concerns about children’s vision

and eye-health.

Information on Bats Provides a Link to Human HealthCAPITAL REGION – How does information and education about “bats of the world” provide “informative human health news”? Rabies, a vi-ral disease, kills 55,000 people world-wide each year; use of poisons in and around a home or business to rid unwanted wild animals is a po-tential health hazard for humans; loss of habitat due to increased land development equals loss of species that pollinate the earth (fruit eating bats are major pollinators & seed distributors); farmers are concerned about the impact of in-creased pesticide use on crops due to the loss of insect-eating bats. A newly identifi ed fungus, White Nose Syndrome, has killed over one mil-lion bats in the last four years. This fungus began near Howes Cave and has spread to 19 states and 4 Canadian Provinces. The US Fish and Wild-life Service is implementing a national plan to coordinate and manage the investigation and re-sponse to White Nose Syndrome in bats. Along with research and disease surveillance, this will ensure better health for all. Learn more at www.yearofthebat.org or www.batcon.org (P)

Emerich Sales & Service, Inc. was started in 1968 by Anna Mae and Arthur Emerich, Jr. They originally began selling snowmobiles in their house garage. Art wanted a snowmobile and so did his brother in law. So they went to a distributor and were told they would have to purchase six ma-chines in order to be a dealer. Art thought he could sell them so he got the six. They did sell to neighbors and friends so he got six more. At that time he repaired them in the garage and their breeze-way was the of ce. Anna Mae sold spark plugs and belts during the day or when Art was not there. Art at that time drove tractor and trailer and delivered hay and straw. Snowmobiles sold better than he thought and the repairs were more than he thought. One day he came to Anna Mae and said I have decided to sell the tractor and trailers and stay home with you and do just the snowmobile business. In 1972 he decided to build a building and also to take on lawn mowers and tractors. He started with Snapper and Wheel Horse. He did well with them and soon took on more names. Toro was a good mate for us because the products were made well and sold well.

In 1997 Art Emerich, Jr. passed away with cancer. His son Kevin Emerich took over the business with no problem because he had been working with his Dad for many years. Since then Kevin has taken on many more brands with Kubota as one of the main ones. Toro has been one of our main lines all these years. Over the years Toro has had many accomplishments. It was founded in 1914. In 1930 Toro introduced the rst power mower for homeowners, in 1951 the rst snowthrower. In 1997 they acquired Exmark Manufacturing. The most popular mower they have now is the Zero Turn mower.

Emerich has a large service department which can service all makes of mowers and tractors. They have factory trained mechanics that perform all repairs. From December 1 to February 28 they have a pre-spring special which gives the customer Free pick up and delivery plus 10% off parts. They are a family owned business to this day with Kevin Emerich, his wife Becky and Anna Mae still hanging in there together. They enjoy being with customers every day and have some of the same customers since they began the business.
