HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF SCHENECTADY

COUNTY EXPANDS BUILD-A-BASH EVENTSCHENECTADY – Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County has celebrated its Women Build program with a Bash held at Schenectady’s Central Park for the last two years. The 2015 event is tak-ing on a new, expanded look with the announcement that the Saturday, Septem-ber 19 “Build-a-Bash” has been moved to the Sche-nectady Armory, located at 125 Washington Avenue in Schenectady (opposite Schenectady County Com-munity College). This his-toric landmark, recently pur-chased and refurbished by partners Jeff and Ray Legere of Legere Restorations, al-lows for a much larger and exciting event. The fund-raiser will feature a variety of local cuisine, a cash bar, live music by Goin’ Back, and a number of unique games and attractions that high-light Habitat’s mission. Prove your hammering acumen by competing in the Habitat Hammerschlagen contest. There will also be a Raise the Roof competition featuring Schenectady Armory part-ner Ray Legere versus GE R&D’s Hope Matis, a member of the GE Women’s Network and frequent Women Build volunteer. Both challengers will be lifted in safety har-nesses by your donations until they reach the 50-foot high ceiling. “The GE Wom-en’s Network has been a big supporter of Schenectady Habitat Women Build for a number of years and we are thrilled to have a rep-resentative participating in this challenge,” said Habitat Interim Executive Direc-tor, Madelyn Thorne. There will also be a live auction to win a child’s playhouse built by Habitat volunteers and other fundraising activities planned during the evening. Long time Habitat volunteer Virginia Newton will be hon-ored during the event. Vir-ginia joined the first Women Build project here in 2004 and has since become a val-ued part of our construction team, in addition to serving on the building committee.

Habitat for Humanity utilizes primarily volunteer labor to rehab and build new con-struction homes for work-ing class families needing a hand up, not a hand out. Partnering with Habitat, families currently living in sub-standard or inadequate housing can apply to be-come first time homebuyers with the Habitat program. Applicants must show the ability to pay a mortgage, maintain an adequate credit

It is pretty hard to accept that summer is about over when we’re having this kind of heat isn’t it? Still and all, September is here and it is time to start taking care of season task in spite of what the thermometer is looking like. One little task you need to do this time of year that can make a huge difference to the health and vigor of your lawn for years to come. I consider this task to be THE most important aspect of lawn care and it is also the one that most folks blow off for some reason. I’m talking about performing some pH tests on your lawn. Checking your soil’s pH will let you know if you need to apply lime (pulverized limestone) to counteract acidity and it will also let you determine how much you need to apply. I think most people blow this important step off because it sounds complicated or “scientific” or perhaps they feel that they’ve done enough for the lawn once they’ve applied their grub control and fall lawn food. I’m here to tell you that, if you never check your soil’s pH and correct it, your lawn will eventually thin out, moss will start to take over and you’ll be off to buy moss killer and more and more lawn food to try to restore it. On the other hand, if you DO keep the soil’s acidity level near neutral, moss won’t take over and you’ll need less lawn food to have the nicest lawn in the neighborhood. Liming is inexpensive and is the “ounce of prevention” that can save you a lot of money and frustration over the years. Here’s the deal: Over time ALL soils gradually become acidic. Rotting grass clipping, leaves and other organic debris contributed to soil acidification. Even the lawn foods that you put on the lawn helps increase the soil’s acidity level over time. Acid rain has a hand in the process as well. Acidification happens more quickly in sandy soils than in clay based soils. Acidification of soil is a natural process and many plants actually prefer soil that’s slightly acidic. Unfortunately grass isn’t one of them. As the soil becomes more acidic, the bacteria and other microscopic organisms that dwell in the soil start to die off. These are the organisms you grass needs to convert naturally occurring nutrients (or nutrients that you apply in the form of lawn food) into forms that your lawn’s roots can absorb. Acidity also impedes osmosis or the ability of the lawn to absorb moisture and nutrients from the soil. If you’ve ignored soil pH for several years, you may have the impression that your favorite lawn food isn’t working as well as it used to. This is due to increased acidity of the soil. You’ll probably find that, if you correct the pH of the soil, you’ll not have to feed you lawn as often. But why, you may ask, is it so important to apply lime in the fall? Why not wait until spring? After you’ve applied the proper amount of lime, it will take at least two months for the lime to react with the soil. By applying lime in the fall, you’ll give it all winter to have a chance to react with the soil. You could wait and apply it in spring but you won’t get the benefit from your application until halfway through the growing season. If you’ve never applied lime to your lawn before, I’d recommend that you test and apply lime this fall and then test the soil again in spring to make sure you’ve gotten the correction you needed. Those of you who cleverly avoid raking fallen leaves in fall by mowing them into the lawn with a mulching mower should be aware that your lawn will become acidic more quickly. Regular pH testing and more frequent lime applications will be necessary to keep your lawn thick and healthy. Generally, once you’ve corrected the lawn’s pH, you shouldn’t need to apply lime for three to five years depending on your soil type. Considering how important, easy and inexpensive maintaining proper soil pH is, I’m amazed at how many people ignore it. Thanks for the read.
