GLENDALE HOME AUXILIARY

FUNDRAISERGLENVILLE – Marcella’s Pizza & Deli, 517 Saratoga Rd. (Rt. 50) Glenville, and the Glen-dale Home Auxiliary are join-ing together to raise funds for the Auxiliary. The Auxil-iary supports the Residents at the Glendale Home by volunteering, providing priz-es for weekly Bingo games, and holiday gifts each year. Marcella’s will donate a por-tion of your total bill (dine in or take out) starting Sunday July 26 through Thursday July 30. Please mention the Glendale Home Auxiliary name to your server.

RADICAL SELF-CARE WORKSHOP

CHARLTON – Thursday, Au-gust 6 at 6:30pm. Learn how your life can explode in wonderful ways through ex-treme self-care, an essential ingredient on the spiritual path. Suggested donation: $20. Albany-Saratoga Spiri-tual Adventures, 2 Impe-rial Lane, Charlton, 518-423-3569. For more information, visit www.newthought-newyork.org.

CAPITAL DISTRICT – In sup-port of a July 1 official open-ing, The Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Rotary Club, in partner-ship with others, was able to raise and donate a total of $42,000 to provide start up funds for a one-of-a-kind re-gional Cleft Craniofacial Cen-ter at the Children’s Hospital at “Albany Med.” Along with the Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Rotary Club, other contribu-tors included Rotary Clubs in Saratoga, Schenectady and Albany Counties, generous individuals, School House Road Pediatrics, C.T. Male As-sociates, Gil’s Garage, Burnt

Hills Ballston Lake Women’s Club, the Galway Lions Club, and the regional Rotary Dis-trict 7190. Of note is that Ro-tary Districts and Clubs from Yuki, Japan; Dhaka West, Ban-gladesh; and Luanshya, Zam-bia contributed, and fortu-nately they will benefit from shared knowledge gained. The Cleft Craniofacial Cen-ter at Albany Medical Center is now the only center of its kind in Northeastern New York. This means parents do not have to take their child to Boston or New York City to obtain the same level of ser-vice. The center is comprised

of a team of experts who treat the full spectrum of cleft and craniofacial anomalies. It is staffed so families can receive world class care for their child with specialists they need in one place during each visit – plastic surgery, dentistry, genetics, neurosurgery, nu-trition, orthodontics, otolar-yngology (ENT), social work and speech language pathol-ogy. To learn more about the center go to www.amc.edu/cleft-craniofacialcenter or call (518) 262-2229. Rotar-ians are proud to be part of bringing this comprehensive service to our region.

This is a great time of year for gardeners; especially this year with a near-perfect growing season. There are home grown flowers in vases in the living room, dining room and even the kitchen. While the perennial flowers follow their blooming cycle with amazing precision, the annuals have entered their “frenzy mode” as the days gradually begin to shorten. I’m always amazed at how quickly they grow as summer wanes. My annual flowers were dawdled through May and early June we had. We usually get a break from mowing the lawn in July. Not this year. I’ve had to mow the lawn every week thanks to well-timed thunderstorms. I don’t mind really since a nice green lawn makes such a beautiful “frame” for the flowerbeds. I’d much rather spend my time mowing than dragging the hose around trying to keep everything alive. Then there’s the bounty of berries, fruit and vegetables that we’re starting to enjoy this year. The strawberries this year came and went quickly but, the birds and I have also been enjoying all the blackberries and raspberries that are appearing in such abundance. A couple of years ago we planted some thornless raspberries and we’re thrilled with the huge crop they’ve provided. It took a couple of years for them to get going but they’ve really start pumping out the berries. There’s only one little glitch; Ajax the dog has taken a liking to strawberries and raspberries so we have to keep an eye on him. A couple of time I’ve caught him in there munching the berries right off the plants. I guess it is our own fault since we found it amusing to toss him the overripe berries when we were harvesting the wild berries that grow on the property. Ajax learns quickly. Perhaps we shouldn’t have planted thornless varieties. He won’t “harvest” the wild thorny berries but has no reservations about going into the thornless ones in the garden. I guess it is a tradeoff since, when we brush Ajax, we take the clumps of hair and tuck them around the perimeter of the garden to repel the deer that are all around. During the couple of years that we were dogless, we had all kinds of problems with the deer. They’d go into the garden at night and strip the tomatoes right off the vines. Beans and lettuce? Forget about it. While we still see deer in the fields, they have, so far, left the garden alone. I guess I’ll have to forgive Ajax a few berries since he’s helping to keep the deer away. All around town I see that the various members of the hibiscus are starting to put on their show. This includes althea, The Rose of Sharon. I have a short row of purple althea that has a double flower much like a carnation that is putting on a nice show. It seems that althea are gaining in popularity lately. While mine are double flowering, I greatly admire the single flowering varieties that I’m starting to see more of. Their flower closely resembles that of the tropical hibiscus that is so popular in the south. These single flowering altheas weren’t available when I planted my hedge 10 years ago or I would have surely opted for one of those. Rose of Sharon is available in a wide range of colors but tend toward the reds and lavenders. There are even varieties that have a bi-colored flower and there’s a nice white that I’ve see as well. While the althea is a woody shrub, there’s another hardy hibiscus that is perennial in nature (it dies to the ground in winter) that is well worth commenting on. Like althea or Rose of Sharon, the mallow hibiscus is a relative of the tropical hibiscus although the flowers are much larger. The showy mallow hibiscus will grow from the ground to a height of 4’ to 6’ during each growing season. Mallow hibiscus flowers range in color from white to deep purple and encompass every shade of pink in between. As if this weren’t enough, the flowers can be as large as a dinner plate! I know you’ve seen these around town since they are in flower right now. A lot of folks don’t realize that this plant is hardy in our area and with easily survive over winter to return larger and showier each year. Each of the giant flowers that mallow hibiscus produces will only remain open for one day. Fortunately, they produce plenty of buds so the show goes on for at least a couple of weeks and even longer for a well-established clump. If you plant either of these northern members of the hibiscus family, you’ll need to be patient in spring. Neither the woody shrub althea nor the perennial mallow hibiscus will show any sign of life until spring is well under way. I usually see no sign of life from either in my yard until the lilacs are in bloom. That’s when the first leaves appear on my althea and the mallow hibiscus is just poking a shoot up from the soil. They are amazing plants and easily deserve a place in your garden. Thanks for the read.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

For further information, call our office at 399-6368

Water can be home to countless viruses and dangerous microbes, so you should never wear your contact lenses while swimming. In fact, the FDA recommends that contact lenses should not be exposed to any kind of water, including tap water and water in swimming pools, oceans, lakes, hot tubs and showers. One of the most serious microbes is called the Acanthamoeba organism, which can attach to contact lenses and cause the cornea to be-come infected and inflamed. This condition, call Acanthamoeba keratitis, is directly associated with swimming while wearing contact lenses. It causes extreme eye pain and can result in per-manent vision loss or require a corneal transplant to recover lost vision if not treated early enough. If you wear rigid gas permeable contact lenses, you should never wear them while swimming, as they are more likely to dislodge from the eye. Soft contact lenses are more likely to remain on the eye while swimming however, they are porous and can absorb chemicals and bacteria, increas-ing the risk of eye irritation and infection. Also, fresh water and water in swimming pools can cause soft lenses to tighten on your eyes, causing significant discomfort. Getting water in your eyes when swimming also rinses away the natural tears that lubricate your eyes and can worsen existing eye conditions such as chronic dry eye. So, if you do decide to swim while wearing your contacts, the best way to protect your eyes is to wear waterproof swim goggles. And remember, always contact your eye doctor immedi-ately if you experience prolonged eye irritation or sensitivity to light after wearing your contact lenses in water.

There’s more to having cataract surgery than just getting rid of the cataract. Equally important is the goal of maximizing the quality of your vision. With cataract surgery, making sure you make the right choice for your vision and lifestyle includes understanding ALL your options for FDA approved intraocular lenses (IOLs), such as monofocal, multi-focal and accommodating.

Prior to having cataract surgery, make an appointment with us. We will provide you with a custom treatment plan for achieving your personal best vision. Our surgeons are very experienced at implanting all types of IOLs, so you don’t have to compromise.

2015 SARATOGA COUNTY FAIR - ART AND SCIENCE PROJECTS FOR

EDUCATION EXHIBITSSARATOGA COUNTY – The 174th Saratoga County Fair invites Saratoga County Schools each year to display their art, science and social exhibits at the fair from July 21-26, 2015. Students also enter projects on their own. Three School Districts with the best displays win awards of a first prize TV & DVD combination, second and third prizes one TV and one DVD; four outstanding stu-

dent entries receive a cash prize. There are ten honor-able mentions for art and ten honorable mentions for So-cial/Science, which will also receive awards. Everyone will receive a ribbon. Cat-egories are: Art, Social Stud-ies/Science, Photography, Graphic Arts & Group Proj-ects. For judging purposes, there will be two age groups; grades K-6 and grades 7-12. Sue Leahey, Kim Leahey &

Joan Joyner, Education Su-perintendents, believe that the young citizens of Sarato-ga County are an important part of the community and should have the opportunity to share their school projects with the many thousands of people attending the fair. This year, Education will have “craft time” every day at 5pm so come and join the fun. Set up date for the edu-cation exhibits is Thursday,

July 16, from 10am to 2pm at the Saratoga Fair Grounds under the Grandstand. En-tries for this department will be accepted on this day only. For more information on entering, call Sue or Kim Leahey at 885-4084 or Joan Joyner at 587-4622. You may also call the Saratoga County Fair Office at 885-9701. Visit the Fair website at www.saratogacountyfair.org.
