PRAYERS

DEAR JESUS PRAYER FOR FAVORS: Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask you this very spe-cial one (mention favor). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within your broken heart where your Father sees it. Then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say prayer for 3 days, promise publication, and favor will be granted. Never known to fail. J.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. As usual at this time of year, folks are having problems with what they like to refer to as “ground bees”. First of all, I’d like to set the record straight; there are some bees that lay their eggs in the ground but they are mostly solitary creatures. These bees generally go unnoticed. They aren’t the culprit that generates the calls I get concerning swarming, stinging insects that come from holes in the ground and that have yellow and black stripes. These aren’t bees but are, in all likelihood, yellow jackets. I just want to be clear about that since bees catch a lot of blame for activities that they aren’t responsible for. Our valuable honeybees aren’t at all ag-gressive like yellow jackets. Let’s cut the honeybees some slack since they are one of our most valuable assets.

Of course the calls I’m getting are from folks who have somehow annoyed a hive of soil dwelling yellow jackets, usually while mowing the lawn or pulling weeds in their gardens. What they are most concerned with is not whether they are bees or yellow jackets but how to get rid of them. Bear in mind that yellow jackets will build their papery nests not only in the ground but also in hollow trees or any hollow area. For some reason, perhaps it is the damp soil, there seem to be more ground nests than normal.

The fi rst step is to fi nd the entrance hole. This should be done very carefully. Anyone who’s ever had a run-in with yellow jacket knows that they get mighty testy when you move into what they consider “their” territory. Once you’ve identifi ed the entrance hole to their nest by observing them come and go, just walk away and gather your assault weapons and wait until dark. The reason you’ll wait to attack until after the sun sets is a matter of safety. Yellow jackets, like other wasps and hornets, use polarized sunlight to navigate. Once the sun sets, they cannot tell east from west or even up from down. This gives you a big advantage, and you have no chance of getting stung. Your equipment will consist of a fl ashlight, a fl at rock to cover the hole or a wad of newspaper to plug it up. Your weapon will be a can of aerosol hornet & wasp spray….the one that shoots a stream 20 feet. After dark, move up on the hole and empty the spray into the hole and then cover the hole or plug it up. That’s it! You’ll never see another yellow jacket emerge from that hole. In any case, whenever you need to spray wasps or hornets, always work after dark by the light of a fl ashlight for the safety it will provide.

One of the more aggravating chores of the season is rearing its ugly head as the weather heats up: WEEDING. As much work as soil building and planting can be, I don’t fi nd them as annoying as weeding. It’s like doing dishes, or mowing the lawn; a lot of work and when you’re fi nished, you’re simply back to square one again. No progress, just maintenance. Since there are a lot of things I’d rather be doing, anything I can do to minimize the amount of weeding (or mowing or dishwashing for that matter) is effort well spent. I can get a dishwasher to wash the dishes, I can get a bigger lawnmower to mow faster, but what can be done about weeds? Years ago, when I had my fi rst vegetable garden, I was getting discouraged by the amount of time I spent hoeing and pulling weeds. It wasn’t a large garden but, between work and other pursuits, I didn’t have time to devote to weeding (which I hated anyway). Then, I read a letter in a gardening magazine about using paper and straw as a weed barrier in the garden. It sounded great to me! I laid the paper grocery bags on the soil to block out the sun and then straw on top to hold the paper in place. It worked great then and still does (although I now must use the biodegradable leaf bags since paper grocery bags have gone the way of 8 track tapes and cars that you could maintain yourself). Best of all, at the end of the season, the paper and straw can be turned into the soil, adding valuable organic matter. I owe a debt of gratitude to whoever wrote that letter. They saved me many hours of weeding over the years; a task I can certainly live without. Thanks for the read.

EYES ON HEALTH

EYEGLASS LENS MATERIALS With current technology, your prescription eye-glasses can be made from a variety of materials.• Glass lenses offer superior optics and the best scratch resistance. However, glass lenses must be speci cally treated for resistance and are heavier to wear than other lens materials.• Plastic lenses are lighter than glass, and can be tinted to almost any color or shade.• Thinner, lighter High-Index lenses create a thin-ner pro le for those with strong prescriptions. These lenses are more comfortable and cosmetically more desirable, and they can be fabricated from either glass or plastic.• Polycarbonate lenses are lightweight and are the most impact resistant lenses available. These lenses are excellent for children, teens, active adults and anyone needing superior eye protection.

Healthy Dining By Tresa EricksonYou like to eat out, but you hate the extra calories you get from doing so. Fortunately, there are ways you can cut back while dining out and still enjoy a good meal.

Select a restaurant that serves lighter fare. Many restaurants specialize in serving healthy foods, while others offer healthy selections on their menu. Find out beforehand what the restaurant of-fers and skip it if it doesn’t provide you with some healthy choices.

Go at a time when the restaurant is not busy and ask questions. The staff will have more time to devote to you then. Find out everything you can about the menu choices that interest you from the ingredients used to the method of cooking. If your server cannot answer your questions, ask to speak to the manager or the chef. Your fi ndings should help you select a healthy meal.

Make healthy choices when ordering. Choose zero-calorie water over high-calorie soft drinks. Choose steamed, baked, broiled and grilled foods over fried foods. Choose fruit and veggies over high-calorie desserts and sides. When possible, ask for gravies, salad dressings and sauces on the side. That way, you can use just the amount you need.

Don’t be afraid to make special requests. Ask that the fat be trimmed from your meat before it is cooked. Ask that skim milk be used instead of whole and vegetable oil instead of butter. Ask that salt be omitted from your meal. Make sure your instructions have been followed when your meal is served and send it back to the kitchen if not.

Eat smaller portions. Some restaurants offer a section on their menu with smaller portions; take advantage of it. If the restaurant does not serve smaller portions, share a meal with a friend or ask for a take-out box upfront, divide your meal in half when you get it and take the rest home.

If you’re careful, you can eat out and cut calories considerably just by making wise choices. Bon appétit.

How to save money on your next carA century ago, cars were luxu-ries. Nowadays, cars are neces-sities that few people can do without. In many cases, there are two or more vehicles per household.

Purchasing a new car can be a stressful process. Individuals don’t want to overspend, and dealers hope to get the most money. Finding that balance typically takes a little negoti-ating, a process many people dread.

Buying a car also involves knowing the difference between invoice price, sticker price and other terminology salespeople use. Doing some research be-fore visiting a dealership can make the negotiation process go much more smoothly. It can also help a person get a better price on a car or truck. Here are some tips to follow.

* Think about full price, not monthly payment. Dealerships have fi nancing managers that can tweak numbers to get a pay-ment that fi ts a person’s budget. For those who walk into ne-gotiations saying they want to pay $250 per month, the sales-person can adjust the term of a loan or the interest rate to real-ize this payment amount. What he or she may not be doing is lowering the price. Instead of shoppers saying what they want to pay per month, they should indicate what they want to pay on the actual price of the car.

* Consider shopping the “in-ternet department” of the deal-ership. Many car dealerships have a sales fl oor and then a separate, behind-closed-doors

department geared toward in-ternet sales. These salaried salespeople are interested in moving a lot of stock to make the dealership money rather than focusing on their own indi-vidual commissions. Therefore, they may be able to give knowl-edgeable shoppers a more de-sirable deal. Furthermore, most of the legwork when buying a car can be done through e-mail or phone calls, rather than hag-gling at a sales desk.

* Buy used. Cars depreciate in value the moment they are driv-en off the lot. In the fi rst two years, some models decrease in value by 25 to 40 percent. Instead of paying the premium for a new car, purchased a pre-owned vehicle that is a few years old. Many carry decent warranties, or an extended war-ranty can be included in the purchase.

* Don’t buy beyond your means. It’s easy for shoppers to be blindsided by the glitz and glam at many dealerships. A single person walking in and buying a 7-passenger extended SUV may be purchasing more than he or she needs. Similarly, he or she may get extra features

that aren’t needed. For example, many navigation systems that come as extras with cars are pricier than aftermarket, por-table GPS devices that are just as effective and easily plugged into a vehicle’s A/C adapter.

* Take care of your credit rat-ing. Good credit means a better fi nancing rate. Very few people can walk into a dealership and pay cash for their cars. This means taking out a loan with the fi nancing department or an outside bank. The better inter-est rate comes to those with a higher credit score. Individu-als should keep track of their credit scores and any blights on a record. Not only will this help with saving money on a car, it will affect other purchases as well.

* Price of car affects insurance, too. Some of the higher-end ve-hicles or sports cars come with a big ticket price -- and also a higher insurance rate. If the goal is saving money, look for a reliable car with good safety ratings. This will help reduce costs on the vehicle as well as insurance.
