Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

Page 2: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

PHOTOSYNTHESIS• Most important biological process on earth• Fills food requirements & needs for fiber & building

material– Petroleum, natural gas, coal, firewood

• Photo means “light”• Synthesis means “to put together”• Photosynthesis happens in the chloroplast in

plants, some bacteria, and some protists.

Cellular Respiration• Takes place day and night in all living cellsplants, animals, protists, bacteria, and fungi.Step-by-step breakdown of high-energy

glucose molecules to release energy (ATP)

All living things take in food and oxygen to produce energy in the cell using cellular respiration.

Page 6: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

Where does it happen?

In the Cell– Mitochondria“powerhouse of the cell”

Page 7: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

Steps in cellular respiration1. Sugar (glucose= C6H12O6 ) from food is eaten. 2. Oxygen (02 ) is inhaled (breathed in from the water

in some organisms). 3. Food is broken down with the help of oxygen

through body chemical reactions (metabolism).4. Carbon dioxide (CO2 ) and water (H20 ) are exhaled.

5. 36 are produced in the reaction, which is energy needed for cellular activity.

Comparing both processes• You can say that the formulas for

photosynthesis and cellular respiration are the exact opposite:

Photosynthesis:

Cellular Respiration:

6CO2 + 6H20

6CO2 + 6H20ATP

C6H12O6 + 6 02

C6H12O6 + 6 02

NOTE: ATP is produced in both reactions, but CELLULAR RESPIRATION produces all the ATP needed for cells to function.
