This Introduction Guide will assist you when working with EPC net for the first time.

Regardless of whether you are an EPC net beginner or areswitching from EPC Flexible Publishing to EPC net, this guide isdesigned to help you through the first few steps.

The chapter "Getting started with EPC net" uses practicalexamples to guide you step-by-step through the basic functionsof EPC net. The step-by-step instructions are marked with , , etc.

In the chapters that follow this, you can familiarize yourself withfurther EPC net functions. This information is marked with , , etc.

If you have further questions that are not covered in thisintroduction guide, EPC net also contains extensive onlineHelp notes.

EPC net represents the latest development in EPC FlexiblePublishing.

All functions available in EPC Flexible Publishing have been fullyintegrated in EPC net and further functions have been added.

EPC net assists you in defining your parts volumes up to thepoint where you enter the shopping lists into your accountingsystems for the creation of cost estimates and invoices.

EPC net contains passenger car and commercial vehicle partsliterature from approximately 1946 and vehicle datacards fromapproximately 1978.

All EPC net functions are clearly arrangedin a main window.

The main window is divided into thefollowing sections:

The size of the individual areas can be altered as desired byclicking on the dividing lines and moving them either up/downor left/right.

The arrow icons can be used to show or hide the individualareas as desired.

Click on the icons provided in EPC net in order to execute speci-fic functions.

Tooltips are provided to explain icon functions. Hover themouse pointer over an icon to reveal the tooltip with a briefdescription of the function.

The majority of the keyboard shortcuts from EPC FlexiblePublishing have also been taken on in EPC net and are visible inthe tooltips.

If you have further questions that are not covered in this intro-duction guide, EPC net also contains extensive online Helpnotes. The online Help notes can be opened by clicking the icon.

Learn the basic functions of EPC net by working throughthe example below.

Task:You are looking for the part number for a new steering wheel.

First you have to determine the vehicle data.

Determine vehicle data

Select the World Manufacturer Code WDB for Germany from thepull-down menu.

Enter the vehicle identification number 2110161A001188 in theinput field and confirm by pressing RETURN .

If you have a vehicle identification number, you should alwaysenter the entire vehicle identification number into EPC net; inthis way, the vehicle datacard will then be evaluated as well, thereby greatly simplifying parts identification.

The vehicle data are determined and the "Group" pull-downmenu will open.

Now you must determine the group andthe subgroup.

Determine group

Select group 46 Steering from the"Group" pull-down menu.

Select subgroup 105 Steering wheeland steering wheel lock from the"Subgroup" pull-down menu.

The picture and the parts list will beshown.

All the part numbers of the whole sub-group are displayed in the parts list, evenif the subgroup is spread across severalpictures. Clicking individual item num-bers in the picture causes only the selec-ted items to be shown in the parts list.

Activate part number

Click the item number 10 Steering wheel in the picture.

Only the part numbers for this item number will be shown in the parts list.

Activate the part number in the parts listby checking the option button .

The part number is transferred to theshopping list.

You have identified the part number for anew steering wheel.

Click the link to show thefootnote.

Footnotes contain important information that must be taken intoaccount when selecting parts (e.g. ES1 code, ES2 code, ident.end numbers, etc.).

Close the "footnote" by clicking the button.

In the current example the ES2 code is displayed directly behindthe part number.

This may not be the case for other vehicle models.If not, the evaluation of the ES2 code must be carried outmanually using the footnote.

The icon can be used to print individual areas of EPC net(parts list, picture and shopping list).

Click the pull-down menu to open the "history." Here, you canfind a list of the last vehicle data entered in EPC net, WIS netand ASRA net.

Several part numbers contain additional information. The following information must be taken into account for properpart number selection:

• Information from the Datacard

• Code information (passenger cars)SA/component information (commercial vehicles)Construction kit information (buses)

• Footnotes must be evaluated

Click the icon to show the datacard.

In order to ensure exact parts identification, the informationfrom the datacard must be taken into account.

Close the datacard by clicking the button.

Click the link to show the "code information."

The "Code information" window contains the text description ofthe code or code character string.

Close the "Code information" window by clicking the button.

Fit picture to windowYou can click the icon to set the zoom level so that the com-plete picture fits into the picture window.

Navigate between picturesA group usually contains multiple subgroups. Each subgroupcontains one or more pictures. The pictures are numbered consecutively from beginning to end . You canchange to a specific picture by clicking a number or by using the

and keys on the keyboard. If there are more than 10 pictures, you can scroll through themin groups of ten using the arrow icons .

Click on item numberThe item numbers in the pictures are hot spots. Clicking one ormore item numbers causes the associated part numbers to beshown in the parts list.

Create/show/manage note for pictureThe icon can be used to create, show, delete and print notesfor pictures.The icon indicates that there is a note for thepicture.

Tear-offThe icon shows the picture in a separate window.The separate window can be closed by clicking once on the icon.

Deselect all item numbersThe icon deactivates all selected item numbers in the picture. Also, all the part numbers of the whole subgroup aredisplayed in the parts list, even if the subgroup is spread acrossseveral pictures.

Zoom in/Zoom outThe and icons incrementally enlarge and/or reduce thepicture.

Select zoom levelYou can click on a zoom level via the "Select zoom level" pull-down menu. The picture will be displayed in the correspondingsize.

Parts identification occurs in the parts list.You can activate the option buttons totransfer the part numbers to the shoppinglist.

Many part numbers contain additional usefulinformation. The following information mustbe taken into account to ensure that youhave selected the correct part number:

• Code information (passenger cars),SA/component information(commercial vehicles),Construction kit information (buses).

• Footnotes must be evaluated.

Selecting the option button automatically transfers the partnumber to the shopping list.

Deselecting the option button removes the part number fromthe shopping list.

If you want to transfer the part number to a particular shoppinglist which had already been saved previously, it is important thatyou select this shopping list before actually activating the optionbutton.

Using the icon, you can add a selected part number to theshopping list. You can add the ES1 and ES2 codes, the quantity,the description, and the warranty/goodwill code to the partnumber as required.

The icon can be used to create, show, delete and print notesfor part numbers.If a note has already been entered for a part number, it will bedisplayed directly under the part number as a link .

The icon can be used to show all part numbers of the wholesubgroup in the parts list, even if the subgroup is split intoseveral pictures.

This corresponds to "F6 All" in "EPC Flexible Publishing".

Clicking the link displays the exact description ofthe Code, SA/component or Construction kit information. Here,a distinction is made between:

• Code information (passenger cars)• SA/component information (commercial vehicles)• Construction kit information (buses)

Clicking the link displays thefootnote.

Footnotes contain important information that must be taken intoaccount when selecting parts.

If the width of the "Designation/description" column is largeenough to display the complete text, the footnote will be shownin full.

The columns are separated by a movable dividing line.

The "Shopping list" is a list of thoseparts/parts kits selected in the parts list.

The contents of the current shopping listare available to your DMS (DealerManagement System).

You can enter an individual remark by clicking underneath thepart designation.

The entered remark is not transferred to the DMS.

You can enter a warranty/goodwill code to a part number asrequired.

The warranty/goodwill codes you enter can be useful whenhandling large amounts of data but they are not passed on tothe DMS.

The part designation is shown as a mouse-sensitive blue link inthe shopping list. Clicking on the link shows the part context.

The part context includes the following information:

• The vehicle data used to determine the part number (modeldesignation or vehicle identification number).

• The group/subgroup to which the part number is assigned.• The picture and the parts list in which the item number was

selected.

Using the icon, you can add a known part number manuallyto the shopping list. You can add the ES1 and ES2 codes, thequantity, the description, and the warranty/goodwill code to thepart number as required.

Using the icon, you can remove a selected part numberfrom the shopping list.

Clicking the icon removes all part numbers from the shop-ping list.

The quantity transferred from the parts list depends on thevehicle's as-built configuration. If you need more or fewer units,you can click in the "Quantity" column and overwrite the quanti-ty as required.

The ES1 code (supplementary code 1) is mandatory for quantity/length specifications, package sizes and changeableparts. By clicking the "ES1" input field, you can enter a 2-character ES1 code as required.

The ES2 code (supplementary code 2) is mandatory when ordering parts that depend on color or the equipment installedin the vehicle. By clicking the "ES2" input field, you can enter a4-character ES2 code as required.

The "List overview" helps you to manageyour shopping lists. This means that mul-tiple shopping lists can be used at thesame time.

A distinction is made between the"Temporary shopping list" and saved shopping lists.

Click the "Temporary shopping list" or asaved shopping list to show its contentsin the shopping list window.

A "Temporary shopping list" always runs in the backgroundduring parts identification. If no saved shopping list is selectedprior to the selection of a part number , the selected part num-bers will be automatically transferred to the "Temporary shoppinglist."

Saved shopping lists are shown in the list overview with the listname that you have entered.

The icon creates a new, empty shopping list.

To avoid unwanted clutter and to keep your list well organized, youcan manage and administer your shopping list by simply clickingon the icon.

The "Shopping list manager" window is used to create, show,delete and print shopping lists.

The icon allows you to save the selected shopping list. Theshopping list must contain part numbers in order for it to besaved.

A shopping list can be saved without write protection or with write protection .

It is not possible to delete a shopping list that has been write pro-tected, nor is it possible to add or remove part numbers fromwrite-protected lists.

The menu bar contains submenus that allow you to openadditional functions in EPC net.

The majority of keyboard shortcuts from EPC FlexiblePublishing have also been taken on in EPC net and are visiblein the menu bar.

File Print Ctrl+P Opens a window in which you can stipulate the print area (picture, parts list, shopping list).

Exit Alt+F4 This closes the EPC net program.

Options Setup F2 In Setup you can configure the basic settings for your User ID.

Filter F7 The filter settings for the data filter can be viewed andchanged as required here.

Menu Keyboard shortcut Function

Functions Add Ctrl+F9 Allows you to manually add a known part number part number to the shopping list.

Datacard Ctrl+F6 You can call up the datacard by entering an identification number.

Footnote Ctrl+F2 By selecting a part number that contains a footnote, thefootnote is displayed.Footnotes contain important information that must be takeninto account when selecting parts.

Note Shift+F2 Following the selection of a part number or a picture, a userhas the option to create, show and manage one or morenotes.

Search Code/SA/ Shift+F8 The "Code/SA/Component search" function facilitates thecomponents management of codes and SAs/components.

SA F10 You can call up an SA directly by entering an SA/componentnumber.

Part F11 You can search for part numbers or for model designationsin the "Search" window.

Search

The following search options are available in EPC net:

Code/SA/ComponentYou can search for the description of codes, SAsand components in the "Code/SA/Component search" window.

SABy entering an SA/component, the SA is shown with its change sequence number.

PartYou can search for part numbers or for model designations inthe "Search" window.

The EPC net online Help notes provide detailed informationon the "Search" function. 9

In "Setup" you can configure the basic settings for your User ID.

Open Setup windowOpen Setup by going to "Options/Setup" in the menu bar or bypressing F2.

Dialog languageThe "Dialog language" pull-down menu allows you to set the EPC net interface language. This will change the language used for the buttons, panel tabs,online Help notes, etc.

Content languageThe "Content language" pull-down menu allows you to set theEPC net content language.This will change the language used for part designations, footnotes, SA codes, etc.

Info text"Info text" or "Production orders" may be available for a particularvehicle. The "Info text" option button is used to stipulate whetherthe system should display Info text/production orders automati-cally in the "Info text" window directly after the identificationnumber has been entered.

Shopping list transfer fileThe shopping list that is transferred to your DMS (DealerManagement System) is stored in this file path.

The local network administrator must be consulted before anychanges are made.

Filter

The EPC net filter settings are shown in the "Show/modify filters"window and can be changed as required.

The filter can be opened by clicking on the icon or by pressingthe F7 key.

Disable or change the filter in the following situations:

• When aftermarket installations were not documented in theFDOK system.

• If the user wishes to find retrofitting information, for exampleon parts that can be installed in the vehicle.

Individual filters can be switched on or off using the option buttons.

The icon can be used to stipulate "No filters" or "Default filters."

The filter icon can be shown as follows depending on the filtersettings:

The default filter is active.

There are no active filters.

Individual filters have been changed.

All settings in the "Show filters" window are temporary. Thismeans that the settings only apply to the active vehicle data.If parts identification is done for other vehicle data, the defaultfilter will be activated automatically.

EPC net comes with a modern online Help system to providecomprehensive user assistance. The Help notes include informa-tion on icon functions, describe the concept and purpose of thevarious windows and provide step-by-step instructions formany procedures.

You can open the online Help notes as follows:

Help iconThe icon is available in almost all EPC net windows. When opening the Help notes by clicking the icon, the section pertaining to the current window will be opened. You can navigate to further Help topics via links or the navigation bar.

Menu barWhen opening the Help notes from the menu bar or bypressing F1, a general Help starting page will appear. Here, you can choose between the various Help topics. You can navigate to additional Help topics via links or the navi-gation bar.

IconsMost of the icons in the online Help are mouse-sensitive and canbe clicked to take the user to further information. The mousepointer changes to a hand when hovering over sensitiveicons, which can then be clicked to access detailed information.

Links in running textLinks in running text are printed in red type. Clicking on a link takes the user to a page containing moredetailed information.

Reference linksReference links are identified with a red arrow and red type.Clicking on the arrow or the red text takes the user to moredetailed information.

Links in overview graphicsMost of the overview graphics in the Help notes are mouse-sen-sitive. The mouse pointer changes to a hand when hoveringover sensitive areas, which can then be clicked to access detailed information.

Navigation barAll Help topics are also included as entries in the navigation bar.

When you open the online Help notes or EPC net for the firsttime, it is advisable to read the Help topic "Information for newand experienced users."

To search for a search term within the online Help notes, go tothe "Start search" panel.

Have you discovered an error or do you have a suggestion forimproving the software? No problem, you can send a feedbackmessage to the responsible office in just a few quick and simplesteps.

EPC net contains the icon. Clicking this icon opens a feedback message screen, to which you can add a detaileddescription as required.

Depending on your server settings, the feedback message canbe sent by either e-mail or fax to the responsible contact per-son.

Task:Send a feedback message for an unclear footnote.

Click on the relevant part number in EPC net.

Click the icon.

The "DaimlerChrysler Feedback" window will open.

Enter information in the correspondinginput fields.

Fields marked in red are mandatory fieldsand must be filled in.A name should also be placed in the"Contact person" input field in case questions arise.

Select the priority using the pull-downmenu.

Click on the button.

The "Parts query" window will open.�

The selected vehicle data, group, subgroupand the selected part number are automati-cally entered in the feedback message. If youwish, you can add further information asrequired.

Identify the error by clicking the option button .

Multiple selection is possible.

Enter a detailed error description as required.

For fax messages only:Enter the fax number of the responsiblecontact person.

Click on the button.

For fax messages only:A fax form will be generated, which youthen fax to your responsible contact person.

For e-mail messages only:The feedback message will be sent by e-mail to the responsible office.

On exiting EPC net, the system checks if there are any unsavedshopping lists. If there are any unsaved shopping lists, a windowappears in which you can select the shopping lists you want tosave.

Select "File/Exit" in the menu bar.

Confirm the warning by clicking the button.

Activate the corresponding option buttons to save the shop-ping lists you wish to keep.
