verything Has a Home,” was the design theme for the new Rainforest of the Americas experience that opened at the Zoo in April of this year. We wanted to illustrate to visitors the idea that plants, animals, and people need a place to

make or call home. And more importantly, perhaps, that those goals are not mutually exclusive. We can, with a little thought and effort, live in harmony with the environment and animals around us.

Many of the animals residing in the Rainforest have already settled in nicely, with offspring being born to the giant river otters, black howler monkeys, oropen- dola birds, and the piranha, which produced a fertile clutch of eggs that hatched into numerous fry now being raised in a safe brood tank. One more home—this one for jaguars—is being added at the end of the Rainforest exhibit. This new space should be completed and open to the public in the first quarter of 2015. It will provide much more space for the cats while also facilitating breeding.

In 2014 we also restaged the World of Birds Show, which has a new home—the Angela Collier World of Birds Theater. Thanks to the generous support of the Angela Collier Foundation, we were able to demolish the deteriorating previous stage and build a new, much more flexible and longer lasting facility where the Zoo can share the many adaptations and behaviors to be found among the bird world for years to come. This rebuild was also supported by generous donations from Helen Pekny, Roslyn Schrank, Diamond Landscaping, Ann and Robert Ronus, Jack and Barbara Dawson, the Georgina Fredrick Children’s Founda- tion, and others. Revisit the bird show often, as trainers

will continue to highlight new behaviors in the coming months as the birds grow accustomed to the facilities.

A lot more events and activities are featured in this Annual Report, many of which only happened with your ongoing support. So thank you from the entire Zoo Team and animal residents. We look forward to another productive year in 2015.

he highlights described in this Annual Report are but a glimpse into your Zoo. Some of the events—such the openings of Rainforest of the Americas and the Angela Collier World of Birds Theater—took place amid much fanfare. Others

occurred behind the scenes, as with the ongoing fundraising efforts that help sustain and build our Zoo, enhance our educational programming, and fund vital international conservation projects.

The debut of Rainforest of the Americas heralded the completion of 11 major capital projects at the Zoo over the last 15 years. For the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, which was an important partner in promoting the public bonds that enabled these improvements—and raised nearly $43 million to support these and other capital needs at the Zoo—it was gratifying to cross the finish line with our donors, our volunteers, and our greater Los Angeles public.

We cannot say “thank you” enough to every donor who contributed to these landmark improvements, for they benefit the Zoo’s most important reason for being—our living collection—and set the stage for our animals as ambassadors for their wild brethren. And now we begin again! As the Zoo embarks on a new planning phase, GLAZA is here to offer its steadfast support.

This past year has also seen the expansion of GLAZA’s responsibilities to the Zoo. On July 1, 2013, GLAZA assumed marketing and public relations duties for the entire Zoo campus. Our aim is to raise attendance by making a strategic long-term investment in marketing

and advertising that will increase the Zoo’s visibility with local residents and international tourists. Already we have more than doubled media impressions through tele- vision, radio, billboard displays, and online advertising. You will also notice major changes in the Zoo’s event offerings, including L.A. Zoo Lights, a lively and con- temporary reinterpretation of the beloved DWP Light Festival.

We hope you enjoy these snapshots of the past year’s activities and accomplishments. To fully partake of all the Zoo has to offer, we encourage you to visit soon and often. It will change you, and as a result, you may help tip the balance positively for animals in our world.

he Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens serves a unique role in our community, helping children and adults develop an affinity for animals and the natural world while offering

a setting for relaxation and recreation. From glamorous galas to seasonal cele-

brations, the Zoo is also the perfect place to party. Each year we host a number of special events designed to enhance zoogoers’ enjoyment, attract new visi-tors, raise money for Zoo programs, and provide opportunities for education and entertainment.

Last year saw the return of reindeer to the Zoo after a five-year absence, and the debut of a new summer event, It’s Cool at the Zoo. Tried-and-true favorites like Boo at the L.A. Zoo, Snow Days, and Big Bunny’s Spring Fling proved popular as ever, and our evening offerings expanded with a new concert series, Roaring Nights, and a Halloween spooktacular, Night of the Living Zoo. Members enjoyed pre- views of the rainforest exhibit and other special events, including Member Appreciation Mornings, Cocktails with the Curator, and Winter Wild!

More than 800 guests—including honorees Heather Mycoskie of TOMS Shoes

and L.A. Film Czar Kenneth Ziffren— attended the 44th Annual Beastly Ball in June, which raised more than $1.1 million to support Zoo programs. The event also celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species. Meanwhile, GLAZA greatly expanded the Zoo’s site rental capabilities, hosting numerous private events for corporations, foundations, individuals, and families. The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers named Betty White an honorary zookeeper at an event in her honor in July.

In May, GLAZA’s Travel Program offered adventurers opportunities for recreation and discovery with an expedition to Botswana guided by Zoo Director John Lewis.

Our corps of dedicated volunteers and docents continued to play a vital role in achieving the Zoo’s mission, contributing more than 82,057 hours of service in 2013-14, both on grounds and in the com-munity. Special needs outreach, classroom safari, and community fairs help spread the Zoo’s environmental message and bring a zoo experience to many who are unable to visit on their own.

ngelenos have seen their zoo go through a tremendous transforma-tion over the last 15 years, with 11 major capital projects completed thanks to the generous support of

our donors, members, civic leaders, and the community at large. While most of the new exhibits replaced older ones, Rain-forest of the Americas—which opened in April—is situated on a previously unde-veloped patch of the Zoo. This 2.2-acre exhibit features myriad South and Central American species, including some never before seen at our zoo. The Angela Col-lier World of Birds Theater also opened in April. The new facility was designed to show off the remarkable natural abilities of our avian stars.

The California Condor Rescue Zone (CCRZ) welcomed some new residents in the form of animal sculptures created by local artist Doyle Trankina. These life-like sculptures, representing wildlife that shares the condor’s habitat, are highlighted in a scavenger hunt activity that is often used to introduce first-time visitors to CCRZ.

To further enhance the programming in the CCRZ, Education staff facilitated a live animal encounter with California condor Dolly, the official ambassador for her species. Visitors were treated to a meet-and-greet with Dolly and her keep-ers, learning firsthand about the condor’s unique attributes.

Education specialists work alongside Animal Care staff and volunteers at Muriel’s Ranch, the contact yard in the Winnick Family Children’s Zoo, helping to facilitate interactions between guests and animals. Last year they introduced new educational opportunities, such as an activity to help young visitors identify the goats by their markings. Education spe-cialists also continue to facilitate a special behind-the-scenes interactive opportunity with our Indian rhinoceros, Randa. Mean-while, our camps and classes continue to sell out.

A grant from the Boeing Company funded the creation of “Condors in the Classroom,” a multi-part, standards-based program designed for fourth graders in the L.A. Unified School District. The program (including a 20-page curriculum, a condor activity poster, teacher training, and field trips), helped local students learn about California condors, their history, and the role the L.A. Zoo has played in the species’ recovery.

he arrival of Hubert and Kalisa in early 2014 may have garnered the lion’s share of media attention, but several other Zoo newcomers also deserve mention. Species not seen

at the L.A. Zoo in two decades—the sengi (also called the elephant shrew), two-toed sloth, and giant anteater—were among the notable arrivals. Several South and Central American species were brought in to inhabit the Rainforest of the Americas exhibit, including a pair of Baird’s tapirs and three dwarf caiman. Two new jaguars arrived—male Lucha and female Maya—who will eventually inhabit the jaguar en-closure that is currently under construc-tion. A bateleur eagle arrived in January and was headlining the World of Birds Show by mid-April.

Four short-nosed echidnas that had been confiscated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service arrived at the Zoo for tem-porary safekeeping in October 2013. The echidnas had been wild-caught from Indo-nesia and were in very poor health upon arrival. The Zoo’s long history with the species proved advantageous, and after months of specialized care by the Animal Care and Health Center staff (including weekly treks into the park to find termite logs while transitioning them to a captive diet), the echidnas began to thrive.

It was a big year for animal births (and hatchings), with a wide range of birds, rep-tiles, mammals, and invertebrates getting

in on the action. Many of these species are endangered or threatened, and main-taining healthy, diverse zoo populations is crucial to their survival. In August, the Zoo celebrated its first ever birth of an okapi, a species that has been in rapid de-cline in its home range in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The same month, Zoo visitors witnessed a bushmaster—the largest venomous snake in the Western hemisphere—laying eggs on exhibit in the LAIR. This reptilian reproduction was an-other L.A. Zoo first. Six gray chicks signi-fied the success of the Zoo’s Chilean fla-mingo breeding program, and 39 sunburst diving beetles hatched in the Desert LAIR.

In July, the Zoo hosted the Orangutan Species Survival Plan Husbandry Work-shop, which united primate specialists from around the world. Meanwhile, the Zoo’s Research Division studied the effect of exhibit size and feeding patterns on el-ephant well-being, and staff from various divisions furthered their education by attending or presenting at conferences, including the International Gorilla Work-shop, and the annual gatherings of the American Association of Zoos and Aquari-ums, the American Association of Zoo Keepers, and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.

rom mountain lions in our local Santa Monica Mountains to Steller’s sea eagles in northeastern Siberia, the Los Angeles Zoo and GLAZA are committed to conserving wild-

life everywhere. By providing the best care for the animals in our zoo and showcasing many endangered and threatened species, we hope to instill in our visitors an appreciation for wildlife and concern for its preservation. In addition, we contributed funding to more than 30 conservation programs in the last fiscal year. To cite one example, we have been supporting Paso Pacifico for the last two years as they study the jaguar population in Nicaragua’s Paso del Istmo, trying to better under-stand the quality of habitat remnants and dispersal corridors for jaguars in the dry tropical forest.

A grant from the Disney Worldwide Con-servation Fund supported the L.A. Zoo’s work with the critically endangered Javan warty pig in Indonesia. GLAZA launched a partnership with TOMS Shoes as the exclusive zoo retail outlet for their limited- edition gorilla shoes, from which a portion of proceeds goes to support gorilla conservation in Africa. The 2014 Bowling for Rhinos event (organized by the L.A. chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers) raised a record-breaking $50,000 for rhinoceros conservation.

In addition to financial support, the Zoo contributes personnel, husbandry exper-tise, and veterinary services to various conservation efforts. Last year, Curator of Reptiles Ian Recchio traveled to Komodo Island to work with biologists from the

Komodo Survival Plan, Curator of Mam-mals Jeff Holland visited the Chacoan peccary sanctuary in Paraguay, Cura-tor of Mammals Jennie Becker assisted with field research into the diet of free-ranging uakaris in Peru, and Curator of Birds Susie Kasielke presented avian egg incubation workshops in China and Colombia. Animal Keeper Damian Lechner spent three and a half weeks in Australia studying wombats and other species he cares for at the Zoo. His trip was funded by GLAZA’s Sloan Animal Keeper Advanced Studies Grant.

Last year’s Duttenhaver Animal Conser-vation Field Study Team (composed of six students and two adult mentors) traveled to Thailand to work with Think Elephant International, studying elephant intelligence and social interactions. The expedition was funded by Linda Duttenhaver. Closer to home, L.A. Zoo staff released 13 mountain yellow-legged frogs—the most endangered native amphibian in California—to the wild in the San Jacinto Mountains.

The Zoo continues to be an important partner in the California Condor Recovery Program. Our condor keepers ventured into the field to assist with 17 nest checks, monitoring the health and development of wild condor chicks. Five condor chicks hatched at the Zoo, 55 wild condors were treated by our veterinary staff (most due to lead poisoning), and eight chicks were sent out for eventual release to the wild.
