LEARN TO SWIM AT THE Y.For many the YMCA was where one learned how to swim as a child, and for good reason. Since 1885, the Y has been a pioneer in swimming education.

Literally millions of people have learned to swim through the YMCA's perfected program. After 30 minutes of gym time, you and your child will attend a parent/child swim class involving song and games. It's a great way to start the day!

Shrimp/Kipper/Inia/Perch This program is for children under age 3 and their parents (or a trusted adult). The primary objective is to get both the parent and child comfortable in the water. Classes allow the child to have fun in the water, while the parent guides them to learn aquatic skills and how to be safe in and around the water. Swim diapers must be worn with a bathing suit over. Shrimp: 6-8months / Kipper: 9-12months / Inia: 13-18months / Perch: 19-36months. Age groups are occasionally combined and sometimes they are split by age.

Seahorse Pike with Parent: Children adjust to the water and develop independent movement. Includes basic stroke and kicking skills, floating, and pool safety.

Level 1: Pike Beginner with little or no swimming experience. Children adjust to the water and develop independent movement. Includes basic stroke and kicking skills, floating, and pool safety.

Level 2: Eel Intermediate Beginner: For children who are comfortable in the water and able to swim five feet with faces in the water and no flotation device. Children are taught to float, kick, and perform progressive arm movements across the pool.

Level 3: Ray Must be able to paddle on front, back and side 15 feet without assistance. Children learn to alternate front and back arm strokes and develop rotary breathing.

Level 4: Starfish Must be able to do basic front crawl with basic rotary breathing, basic back crawl and basic sidestroke for 20 feet without assistance. Begin to refine stroks and learn to dive with assistance.

Level 1: Polliwog Beginner level for those uncomfortable or inexperienced in the water. Teaches basic water skills such as gliding with face in water, floating, and kicking.

Level 2: Guppy Children should be able to f ront and back float for 30 seconds without float belt. Learn to swim 25 yards without a float belt on the front, back and side. Jump in without assistance. Should be comfortable in deep water.

Level 3: Minnow Children should be able to front and back float for one minute, front alternating paddle with rotary breathing for 25 yards without float belt, front and back symmetrical paddle for 25 yards.

Level 4: Fish Advanced: Swim Placement required if you have not taken a YMCA swim lesson in the last year. For children able to swim 25 yards front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, sidestroke, and rudimentary breaststroke. Refines breast stroke, teaches butterfly, open turns and improves other strokes.

Level 5: Flying Fish Advanced: Children should be able to swim the front crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, backstroke and sidestroke for 100 yards. Swim 25 yards of the butterfly stroke.

Level 6: Shark Advanced: For children able to swim 25 yards front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, sidestroke and rudimentary breaststroke. Refines breast stroke, teaches butterfly, open turns and improves other strokes.

Adult Swim Instruction Adult Beginner 1: This is for individuals age 16+ who have either not had formal swim lessons, are not comfortable in the water or know very little swimming technique. The class will focus on water adjustment and the basic fundamentals of breathing, kicking, floating and timing. This class is for those who might hold some fear and have trouble getting feet off the ground.

Adult Stroke Development Adult Stroke Development: This is for swimmers age 16+ who are comfortable in the water and know the fundamentals of swimming (breathing, kicking, floating). Swimmers should be able to swim two lengths of the lap pool and tread water for 1 min. The class will focus on strengthening the front crawl and back crawl, with additional work on sidestroke and breaststroke. This class is great for those looking to do a triathlon or join masters but are in need of extra guidance

The Lake View YMCA Wahoo's offer kids the opportunity for strong indi-vidual growth through a dynamic team experience. Team members make news friends, challenge themselves to improve their strokes and get great workouts. The primary season runs during the academic year, mostly January - April. Practices are held on Tuesday and Thursday with meets during the weekends.

Pilates Reformer Training: Private Pilates Reformer training sessions are available by appointment and are the perfect way to personalize your workouts and maximize your results! Our instructors will tailor your sessions based on your individual goals and needs.

Pilates Reformer Group Classes are offered 6 days a week at the Lake View YMCA! Classes run with a minimum of 3 and maximum of 4 participants. Classes are designed for all ranges of experience; however beginners should take the level 1 class first. Level 2 & 3 classes require instructor approval. Prenatal classes offered when requested. Pilates Reformer Level 1: This group class is for total beginners! Experience a full body workout on the Pilates Reformer. The Reformer provides varying degrees of resistance and stability to make your workout more challenging than a mat class. Pilates Reformer exercises promote length, strength, flexibility and balance.

Pilates Reformer Level 2 and 2 & 3: This group class is designed for intermediate level practitioners with knowledge of both their own body mechanics and the Reformer machine. Register for this class after participating in Level 1 classes or gaining instructor approval.

Pilates Reformer Level 4: This group class is for the more experienced and advanced practitioners. Challenge yourself more as you focus on technique, precision and form to fine tune your body awareness, increase your strength, gain lean muscle, restore postural alignment and more.

Boot Camp 4 Pack + Get 1 Free: To redeem your free class, have the instructor initial and date your Punch Card each time you come to class. Improve your flexibility, cardio-respiratory conditioning and strength for 1.5 hours every weekend with Mondale. Meet by the treadmills; this class may be held outside.

TRX Small Group Training: The TRX is a new way to workout for all fitness levels that builds body strength, flexibility and your core at the same time. The TRX system harnesses your own body weight to create resistance as you train and quick transitions keep your heart rate going to burn calories.

GRIT®: Les Mills GRIT®Small Group Training utilizes a specialty trained coach who will take you through a proven 30-minute, high intensity interval training workout. There are 3 unique programs that focus on plyometrics, strength and cardio. Class times will vary; check the specialty schedule for details.

Born To Move Ages 4-5: Exploration, Music and Movement! Children ages 4-5 are gaining more effective control over movements and have vivid imaginations. This class of 45 or 55-minute is written to involve them in the narrative. Participants are immersed in active play and storytelling. They develop self-awareness, balance, weight transfer and concentration skills while learning how to interpret music, explore and move to a beat.

Born to Move Ages 8-12: Dynamic games, Movement and Music! In this 30 or 45-minute class, teachers show participants how to do moves from dance, martial arts and yoga. This class includes great music and games to keep things interesting while developing fitness skills. The teacher will adapt their approach to match participant mood and energy levels so everyone leaves class feeling great.

Schools Day Out When schools are closed, structured activities and child care programs help to keep your child safe, engaged, and learning. Our program includes swimming, arts & crafts, team-building, sports and more. Dedicated staff makes sure children are developing the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behavior, better health, and greater educa-tional achievement. Elementary Before and After School The Lake View YMCA is proud to be working with Chicago Public Schools to provide quality child care for children in elementary school. Fees are monthly. Our programs strive to accomplish the following goals: To protect and promote each child's health and fitness. To promote each child's social and emotional development and instill the YMCA four core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. To provide a nurturing environment and the opportunity to succeed. To develop each child's levels of self-esteem and self-confidence.

Kiddie Kollege Introduce your child to other preschoolers as they play in this healthy preschool-style learning environment. This program (3 days/week max) is taught by instructors with childhood education experience. Run, jump, play, read, learn, share, paint, draw, sing, dance, and show-and-tell in this great introduction to school!

Teen Night Every third Friday of the month the Lake View YMCA will host teen night. Come to the Y to play sports and be with friends. Pizza and drinks provided.

Family Night This winter, the first and last Friday of the month, the Lake View YMCA welcomes the community to enjoy our Family Nights! Play games, win prizes, enjoy bounces, sample classes, movie night, and much more!

Parent’s Night Out Every second Friday of the month drop your kids off at the Lake View YMCA between the hours of 6-10pm. The kids will enjoy pizza, swimming, sports, crafts and a movie! $30 for members and $40 for non members.

Y Kids Zone Take advantage of our beautiful Y Kids Zone with plenty of activities for kids to play and explore. Our certified caring staff will keep your kids safe and engaged while you work out. 10 free hours a month with family membership.

Family Swim/Family Gym Spend time with the family and stay active. Take advantage of your family membership by coming to the Y pool or gym. Check our online schedule for details as times vary. www.lakeviewymca.org

Family Zumba/Yoga What a great way to keep fit with your child. Bring your child to Family Zumba or Family Yoga on the weekends.

Kindergarten Basketball Clinic Learn the basics of basketball by passing, dribbling, shooting and team work.

Girls and Boys Basketball Leagues This winter enjoy the great team sport of basketball at the YMCA. Teams practice one night a week with games on the weekend. Become part of a team and improve your skills!

Girls and Boys 5th-6th Grade Basketball Clinics Hone your basketball skills at the YMCA. Work with staff and volunteers who will help you to improve your dribbling, passing and defense. Small scrimmages at the end of each clinic.

Dance Club Develop strength, coordination, flexibility and self expression through a combination of creative arts and fitness.

Messy Masterpieces Preschoolers will enjoy independently exploring through this messy painting class! Your little artist will use different colors, textures, paint brushes, and paint mediums to make a new masterpiece to take home each week!

Lil Stars Soccer and Preschool Soccer Get your preschooler off on the right foot. Bring them to the Y to learn basic soccer skills including kicking, passing, dribbling and shooting goals.

Tiny Toes Ballet Join the laughter and fun as your little ones, little toes develop by exploring movement, song and dance. We will introduce ballet basics, rhythm, and the initial concept of poise.

Tiny Tot Tumbling Parents and children enjoy a fun-filled variety of activities that develop motor and listening skills. This introductory class features tumbling, climbing, jumping, and more. A fun experience for everyone!

SPORTS AT THE Y.Meet friends, learn new skills, improve your fitness and most importantly have fun! Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes with learning a new sport, building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, or refining and improving skills, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole athlete-inside and out.
