John 14:1 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Eric Clapton, one of the greatest living rock guitarists, wrote a heart wrenching song about the death of his four-year-old son. Here are the words: Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven? I must be strong and carry on, 'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven. Would you hold my hand if I saw you in heaven? Would you help me stand if I saw you in heaven? I'll find my way through night and day, 'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven. Time can bring you down; time can bend your knees. Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please. Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure, And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven. Hardship has a way of getting our attention. Pain slows us down. It can even soften us. Very few us, after facing a trial, come out the same way we entered in. Jesus understood this and attempted to prepare his disciples for the road ahead. He wanted them to know if you have faith in him you will overcome your worry. It seems almost impossible doesn't it? Getting rid of worry. But let me tell you it is absolutely essential that we be free of worry. Worry distorts reality. Worry often times leads us to false conclusions. Yes, worry can cause us to say strange things and behave in unpredictable ways. That’s why the Gospel of John spends 5 of its 21 chapters describing events at a dinner table the day before Jesus died. Jesus wanted his disciples and us to be ready for the time when hardship and worry assail us. He wants to empower us in such a way that our lives can withstand and trump them. Jesus gives us in his Gospel this kind of power. It is the kind of power that can reshape our lives. The kind that says, “I will strengthen your soul so you learn not to worry when times are tough.” The kind of help that doesn't show us the way but rather becomes our way: He is our way; He is our truth; He is our life. In His service, Pastor Ed I remember a plane ride where the pilot came over the intercom: We have lost one of our engines. No need to worry, we will be arriving 1 hour later than anticipated. Pilot 30 minutes later: We have lost another engine; we will be arriving 2 hours later at our destination. Pilot one hour later: We have lost our third engine. We will be arriving 4 hrs late at our destination. Passenger to her husband: I'm starting to get worried, if that last engine goes we will be up here all night.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me." John 14:1 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Eric Clapton, one of the greatest living rock guitarists, wrote a heart wrenching song about the death of his four-year-old son. Here are the words:

Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?

In His service, Pastor Ed

LETTER FROM THE GOVERNANCE BOARD Hello members and friends of Emmanuel. If you were not aware for any reason, Debbie Spence and Rod Kirby were both unanimously elected to serve as board members at the May 1st voters meeting. Sandra Lucero, Darrell Strickler and Doug Richardson will continue as the balance of the board, each serving their second year. Leaving the board with high praise and thanks from Emmanuel for a job well done were Jim Deis and Helene Kipp. The first board meeting with its new members was held Thursday May12th. At that meeting the boards officers were selected and installed. Continuing as President is Doug Richardson and as Treasurer Sandra Lucero. Debbie Spence was selected and accepted the position of Secretary. Debbie and Rod will both be wonderful additions to the board and have hit the ground running. As the board along with Pastor Ed look to the future, and begin the process of identifying new goals, we ask for your continued support and prayers that decisions and actions taken by the board continue to please God and serve to achieve his will for Emmanuel’s ministry. There will be ample opportunity for everyone to get involved at Emmanuel the next few months and the governance board would like to encourage you to do just that. From ushering and accolyting, to volunteering for VBS or demonstrating your acting skills with the new drama group there is something for every-one. God Bless, The Governance Board

You can’t say the Monday morning Bible study group doesn’t know how to have a good time! Even Debbie, our beloved teacher can really chow down. She worked up a real appetite with her teaching of Romans this Morning. We have a celebratory luncheon every month for the ones who have a birthday in that month. For May it was Nancy Jane Mazi who couldn’t be there, but we didn’t let that stop us. We celebrated anyway! Many of you may remember Nancy Jane who is now a member of Peace, as is Maxine and Bonnie seen in this pic.

Go Debbie Go!

Country Gospel

Enjoy it again on June 4th, 2011! Our own Country Praise Group will be back to lead us in singing the great old and new country gospel songs we so love. So Ya’all come and raise your voices to the Lord in Song! Next month July 2nd will be the date.

Women of Grace There’s something special about roses. They’ve been a favorite throughout time. Why do we love them so much? Perhaps because they’re beautiful and fragrant. Wouldn’t that be a great combination for a Christian woman?

There comes a time when we need to sniff under our spiritual arms and say “Do I stink?” We often need to get back on track to being a sweet smelling woman for the Lord.

Ways to improve our fragrance: Be kind Be forgiving Be joyful Be content

A Christian woman without a pleasing fragrance won’t accomplish much for the Lord. We’ve got to be more like Him, the ‘Rose’ of Sharon. We need to live our lives in a way where His love flows through us and causes us to be a sweet smelling odor in the world.

Okay, what kind of fragrance did you leave as you walked today?

Our next Women of Grace meeting will be a luncheon and devotional time on Sat. June 18th at 11:30 at the Iron Bird Café at Divisadero and Fulton Streets. There will be a signup in the Narthex. See Cheryl Deis for more information.

Attention all staff / coordinators / leaders, there will be a meeting on Sunday, June 5

Please join us in the Church house conference room at 11:30 am

It’s a sin for a woman to make coffee. It says so in the Bible: Hebrews. David was a great babysitter—He

Laughing at Ourselves!

My loving husband, Austin, likes to go to yard sales and get whatever bargains he can find. This Saturday, he came home with a cd of worship songs for me. He said he didn’t recognize the name of the artist, but it was only 50 cents so it should be ok anyway. I looked at it and read the label on it and it was worship songs sung in Hebrew!

Childrens’ Ministry In March and April our Sunday school classes combined for the Lenten season. Each Sunday, they had a bible story and activity relating to the story. They started off by hearing the miracle of the creation story and were involved in planting their own garden with Mike Kipp. Next we discussed the 10 Commandments and created bird feeder cones and yummy snakes. Over the next week they heard other miracle stories – the Blind man sees, Feeding the 5000, Jesus calms the storm and turning water to wine, and raising Lazarus from the dead. Our activities included – mud pudding, sailing boats and wrapping sticks with linen. As we got closer to Easter we began to focus on the happenings of Easter. We created paper palm branches and had our own journey into Jerusalem with a parade. Ms Chris supplied all the ingredients to create a Passover Seder meal with unleavened bread. The children each participated in helping to create the meal by crushing, stirring or measuring out the specific ingredients for the recipe. After hearing the Passover story, we gathered around the tables and ate our Seder meal. On Palm Sunday, we jumped ahead and discussed the miracle of all miracles, the story of Easter morning. Ms Chris had two projects for the kids. An Easter Butterfly made with tissue paper, and all the ingredients to create a Resurrection Cupcake plate. This was our final class since we would not have classes on Easter Sunday. Here are a few pictures of the kids with their plates at different stages of completion. You will notice the butterfly’s also on the table. Also included are pictures of the garden planted by the Sunday school kids. It is currently on the patio table outside the Church house. We would like to thank Doug and Carolee Richardson for their donation for all the supplies that were used as food items and craft projects. The kids really enjoyed being involved in the making and doing of this 6 week course.

It has recently been in the news where people are receiving phone calls from a young voice claiming to be their grandchildren needing money. The caller asks for ‘Grandma’ or ‘Grandpa’ and says they are in trouble and need money and if it can be wired to an account for them. A member has recently received one of these calls and they seem very convincing. The member asked for their birth-date and when it wasn’t given another voice came on the line saying they are a

lawyer handling the child’s case. Please be aware that this is a scam and don’t give out any informa-tion. If you receive one of these calls, just say no thank you or hang up.
