Scripture Readings for October 30, 2016
Reformation Sunday:
Jeremiah 31:31‐34
The renewed covenant will not be breakable, but like the
old covenant it will expect the people to live upright
lives. To know the Lord means that one will defend the cause of the poor and
needy (Jer. 22:16). The renewed covenant is possible
only because the Lord will forgive iniquity and not
remember sin. Our hope lies in a God who forgets.
Romans 3:19‐28
Paul’s words stand at the heart of the preaching of
Mar n Luther and the other Reforma on leaders. No
human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law.
We are brought into a right rela onship with God
through the divine ac vity centered in Christ’s death.
This act is a gi of grace that liberates us from sin
and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ.
John 8:31‐36
Jesus speaks of truth and freedom as spiritual reali es
known through his word. He reveals the truth that sets
people free from sin.
Sermon Title: Mar n & Ka e Luther by Pastor Dave Daugs

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me. Ma hew 25:35
God richly provides for daily bread — the earth can produce enough food for
everyone. Yet, many of our sisters and brothers s ll go hungry.
By providing immediate relief to those who are hungry, we meet basic needs and recognize the universal human right to food. But ending hunger is about more than food. By connec ng people with the resources they need to produce food and gain access to clean water, educa on, health care and sources of income,
long‐term, sustainable change can be accomplished.
We start with rela onships marked by conversa on and listening. We believe people know their own communi es best. It is our congrega ons and
our global companion churches that first iden fy the local needs and related solu ons to help make a difference. Then, we partner with communi es
to help make those solu ons a reality.
Working through ELCA congrega ons, global companion churches, The Lutheran World Federa on and other partners like Bread for the World,
Church World Service, Lutheran Immigra on and Refugee Service and Lutheran World Relief, the ELCA reaches more places more effec vely than we could ever do alone. In addi on to funding relief and development projects that assist our
sisters and brothers in need, we engage members of the ELCA in educa on and advocacy to help change the systems that perpetuate poverty.

Through this comprehensive approach, we work to address hunger from all angles — both domes cally and globally.
