This is a freshman level college course in physical geography. It requires no prior experience with the subject. GEOG10 is fully transferable (including UC and CSU).

By the end of this course you should be able to do the following: • Interpret a variety of maps and discuss spatial relationships • Apply major geographic themes and concepts to understand the origins and development of

major nations and regions • Compare and contrast major regions of the world with regards to their environments,

peoples, resources, economies, and contemporary problems • Discuss the relationships between cultures and the environment of which they are a part. Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course. This course requires college level reading and writing skills. It is strongly recommended that you have completed or are currently enrolled in English 1A or ESL 25.

Teaching Methods, Assignments, Exams and Grading This course will incorporate a variety of teaching methods including class lectures, in-class projects and essay exams. Note on plus/minus grading: Foothill College is currently conducting a pilot study of plus/minus grading. Plusses and minuses will not appear on your transcript this quarter. In accordance with Foothill grading policy, there is no A+ or C- in this course. Grades lower than C are not issued plusses or minuses. The following lists the full grading breakdown.

Regional Atlas Quizzes Each unit will have a ‘Regional Atlas Quizzes’ which needs to be completed on the ETUDES companion website. The purpose of these activities is to help familiarize you with the region we will be studying. These inquiry-based activities are worth 50 points apiece and involve the use of Goodes World Atlas. I encourage you to print out the quizzes at the beginning of each unit and work through them off line, then log back into ETUDES to enter your answers by the deadline. There are no make-ups for these quizzes.

Exams All exams in this course will incorporate essays and short answer questions. A study list will be distributed before the exam.

Exam 1 – April 28: Sub Saharan Africa and Asia

Exam 2 – May 26: The Middle East, Europe, Russia and the Near Abroad

Exam 3 – June 22 (11AM-1PM): Part A (150 points) will cover The Pacific, Latin America and Anglo America; Part B (100 points) will cover applications of map reading and interpretation skills as well as major themes from the entire course

Note: Accommodations will be made as necessary for students with disabilities. Please speak to me at the beginning of the course to make me aware of extenuating circumstances.

Class Participation

The class participation portion of the grade is determined by attendance, participating in class discussions and answering questions fielded during lecture as well as behaving in a manner commiserate with a college classroom (not talking, playing PDA/phone games etc). If inappropriate behavior continues after an initial warning, student may lose some to all of their participation points. Attendance will be taken every day.

Make-up policy 1. Make-ups are given only under the following circumstances: acute illness,

extenuating circumstances which affect your performance in the classroom (e.g. family crisis, auto accident etc.)

2. All make-ups must be scheduled on or before the day of the missed exam. This means that you must contact me the day of the exam. Call, leave a voice mail message or email me.

Attendance and withdrawal policy You are responsible for all of the material presented in class and announcements made on the class web site. Attendance will be taken every day.

Plagiarism Policy You are encouraged to work with your classmates in completing the regional atlas activities. However, each student must complete his/her own work.

Plagiarism (see Foothill college definition of plagiarism at: http://www.foothill.fhda.edu/news/honor.html) on any assignment or exam in this course will result in an F on that assignment/exam for the first infraction, and an F for the course for subsequent infractions. All incidents of plagiarism will be reported to the Dean of Students.
