Calanda, who won the $250,000 Inglis 3YO Sprint (1100m) at Randwick last December, backed up a decisive last start win at Rosehill on 1 July with victory in the $160,000 Grafton race.

Ridden by Jim Byrne, Calanda ($3.80 favourite) settled behind the speed from barrier three, which was set by runner up The Monstar (California Dane) ($5.50), and slid up closer to the rail when the leader angled towards the centre of the track.

The Brett Cavanough-trained The Monstar, who won the June Stakes (Listed, 1100m) on 10 June, held on for second, a short-head behind Calanda.

Flippant (Hinchinbrook) ($6), a stablemate to Calanda, was just over a length further back in third place. The James Cummings-trained Mogador (Lonhro) ($21) ran fourth for the second consecutive year.

“It’s a big thrill,” co-trainer Paul Snowden said from Grafton immediately after the race.

“He beat a handy field which is pleasing.”Snowden indicated that Calanda would be given a short spell and

brought back for the early spring races while retaining residual fitness.“It’s a shame to tip him out because he is in such good order but we

will look after him and see the benefits later on,” he said.Snowden was also full of praise for Flippant who was second up from

a spell in the Ramornie Handicap.“She is a tough mare and to see her bounce back after that hard Healy

run is a feather in her cap.”Peter Snowden trained the 2011 Ramornie Handicap winner Jerezana

(Lonhro) and 2010 winner Pinwheel (Lonhro) when he was the head of Darley’s Australian operation.

Meanwhile, Calanda (3 g Snitzel - Speedy Bell by Brocco) took his record to five wins and two placings from 11 starts, with yesterday’s victory making up for a luckless run in the Inglis 3YO Guineas (1400m) at Scone and an unplaced two-start Queensland campaign. He then returned to the Snowdens’ Randwick stable to win at Rosehill earlier this month.

The gelding has now won $405,675 in prize money for his owners after being purchased by China Horse Club and Michael Wallace Bloodstock for $200,000 from the Yarraman Park Stud draft at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Bred by Arthur Mitchell of Yarraman Park Stud, Calanda is a son of Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Speedy Bell (Brocco), herself

a half-sister to Listed winner Whoever (Redoute’s Choice) and the stakes-placed Stratford (Stratum) and Superforce (Mukaddamah). Speedy Bell is the dam of ten named foals, eight of whom have raced for seven winners.

As well as Listed winner Calanda, Speedy Bell is also the dam of Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) winner Speedy Natalie (Al Maher), herself the dam of Group Three winner Sweet And Speedy (Street Cry), and Jungle Dawn Classic (Listed, 1400m) winner Silverstream (Al Maher).

Speedy Bell, who died in August last year, missed to Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) in 2013 before foaling a colt by Yarraman Park Stud-based stallion I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) in October 2015.

The now rising two-year-old colt was sold by Yarraman Park Stud for $320,000 to The Hong Kong Jockey Club at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Calanda’s three-quarter sister, the unraced rising five-year-old Passarelle (Not A Single Doubt), was sold for $120,000 at the 2015 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale and has a weanling I Am Invincible filly and is due to foal to Sebring (More Than Ready) this September. Speedy Natalie also has a weanling filly by I Am Invincible, but missed to the same stallion last November.

Calanda’s sire Snitzel, meanwhile, has now sired 64 individual stakes winners including 11 Group One winners. They include this year’s The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Russian Revolution and Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Redzel, who are also trained by the Snowdens.

Snitzel, who has an increased fee of $176,000 (inc GST) in 2017, has the chance to surpass champion stallion Danehill’s mark of 26 stakes winners in a season on Saturday.

He has daughter Elle Lou in the ATC Winter Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Rosehill, who is trained by Chris Waller and will be ridden by Glyn Schofield from barrier five.

64 For Snitzel Calanda (3 g ex Speedy Bell by Brocco) won the Ramornie Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Grafton yesterday to provide Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) with his 64th stakes winner. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained gelding beat top weight The Monstar (California Dane) by a short-head, with his stablemate Flippant (Hinchinbrook) just over a length further behind in third place. Following the victory of Calanda, Snitzel has equalled Danehill’s (Danzig) record of 26 individual stakes winners in a season. The champion sire elect will stand for a fee of $176,000 (inc GST) at Arrowfield Stud this spring.

Ten For Monash StakesComeback sprinters Lord Of The Sky (Danerich) and Supido (Sebring) are among six horses set to resume in Saturday’s Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield. The Robbie Laing-trained Lord Of The Sky, who returns from 11 months off the scene after failing to secure a deal to stand at stud, has drawn barrier one in the field of ten, with heavyweight jockey Arron Lynch taking the ride. Supido, who is trained by Mick Kent at Cranbourne, has not raced since finishing well back in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) on a Heavy 10 surface at Rosehill. He was placed in the 2016 The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) but only had three starts last campaign.

Morning Brief

Supido Favourite For Group ThreeMick Kent is pleased with the condition of Supido ahead of the Sir John Monash Stakes, with the five-year-old installed as the $2.15 favourite with CrownBet. "He was struggling on that heavy ground up there (in Sydney)," Kent said. "We pulled the pin nice and early so he had a good break and had time to get ready for this. I'm happy with him. He seems good. Caulfield is the only metropolitan track in Melbourne he hasn't won at. He's had a couple of starts there, but he's good to go." Click here to view the Caulfield acceptances.

expected to be preparing Ninth Legion (Fastnet Rock) for the ATC Winter Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Rosehill after riding him to win on debut five years ago. The rising eight-year-old gelding, who was last first up in the Winter Dash (1200m) on 24 June, will contest the Listed race on Saturday with Adam Hyeronimus taking the ride. "He's been a terrific horse for me. I've won a Group Two on him and a trained him to win a couple of Listed races in the twilight of his career," Robl said. Click here to view the Rosehill acceptances. Paragon Ready For Queensland CupThe John Sargent-trained Paragon (Reaan) is ready for the step up in distance after strong performances in Listed races ahead of Saturday’s Queensland Cup (Listed, 3200m) at the Sunshine Coast. Sargent started considering Saturday's Queensland Cup when Paragon won a 3200 metre race on the Beaumont track at Newcastle in August last year. He sent Paragon north after the better stayers had returned home from the winter

carnival and the gelding has run fourth in both the Ipswich Cup (Listed, 2150m) and Caloundra Cup (Listed, 2400m). "Some of the other in-form stayers seem to have gone to the Grafton Cup so it isn't the strongest 3200 metre race," Sargent said.

Emerald City Ready For Stamina TestTrainer David Vandyke is hopeful that Emerald City (Bernardini) will last home in the $150,000 Queensland Cup at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday. The six-year-old is attempting the 3200 metre trip for the first time, but he is a half-brother to the multiple stakes winner Destiny’s Kiss (Power Of Destiny) who won over that distance at Randwick. “He had a good campaign winning four straight races last campaign when he struck a series of good tracks but he’s struggled a bit this time in on wet tracks,” Vandyke said. “He’s a half-brother to Destiny’s Kiss who won over two miles at Randwick. His mother can produce two-milers.” Click here to view the Sunshine Coast acceptances.

Hypnotist Remains UnbeatenThe Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Hypnotist (Snitzel) stretched his unbeaten record to three with victory over 1550 metres at Canterbury yesterday. The two-year-old colt was purchased for NZ$240,000 by James Harron at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, and he beat Uncle Rodriguez (Uncle Mo) by a short-head to follow up his two earlier wins at Newcastle. "He had to pull out plenty and he kept delivering all the way to the line,” Peter Snowden said. "He's still very new, very raw. He tends to have a bit of a look around when he starts to hit the front so there's still more improvement in the horse."

‘Better To Come From Street Impact’Three-year-old Street Impact (Street Cry) justified strong betting support to win on debut in a 1200 metre maiden at Sandown Lakeside yesterday, but trainer Robert Smerdon believes the filly has more to offer. Street Impact ($1.65 favourite) fought off the challengers to win by a head over Quik Nu Chik (Testa Rossa)

with another short half-head to Trojan Storm (Mosayter). "We'll always accept a win but I think she's a lot better than what we saw here," Smerdon said. "I think there's more to come once she gets more competent at what she's doing. To see her win narrowly is a relief. But I thought she would win clearly. She's out of a really, really good mare and she's a lovely filly with good ability and hopefully she can build on today." First Winner For CameronsI Boogi (Iffraaj) won by a short-head over 1200 metres at Sandown Lakeside yesterday to give Flemington-based Russell and Scott Cameron their first winner as a new training partnership. The 25-year-old Scott Cameron recently joined his father as co-trainer, and he was understandably delighted to register a first success in his new role. "To get my first winner in town is a good thrill," Cameron said. "I've ridden work since I was 14 for Dad and I always thought this was the way I was going to go.”

Canberra Trainers’ Highway Eligibility CloudedRacing NSW chief executive Peter V’Landys yesterday declined to comment to ANZ Bloodstock News about the future of Canberra-based trainers being allowed to participate in the TAB Highway races held at Sydney's Saturday metropolitan meetings. There are reports that Canberra-based trainers will be excluded from the successful concept, which sees country-trained horses vying for $60,000 in prize money in the TAB Highway races. A $200,000 TAB Anniversary Highway (1400m) will be held at Randwick on 14 October to mark two years of the concept. Six of the 12 runners in Saturday’s TAB Highway at Rosehill are trained in Canberra.

Ruby Ride Injured In Doomben FallQueensland apprentice Ruby Ride has been taken to hospital for assessment after her mount Red Magic (Magic Albert) crashed through railings in a 1200 metre race at Doomben yesterday. Ride had pulled Red Magic to the outside to make a run in the straight in when the gelding veered to the inside and went through the rail around 250 metres out. "Ruby was conscious and complaining of some pain in her back and buttocks. But she will have a complete tests at the hospital," chief steward Martin Knibbs

said. Red Magic was later euthanised as a result of his injuries.

McGillivray Gets Stay Over SuspensionIn-form Queensland apprentice Matt McGillivray has been granted a stay on an order to increase a suspension he received after being outed by stewards last month. McGillivray was originally suspended for ten days when found guilty of causing interference in a race at Townsville on 20 June. Stewards found McGillivray had excessively restrained his mount Harjaka (Mettre En Jeu) causing several runners to suffer interference. He sought an internal review and adjudicator Kane Post last week upheld the stewards decision but also increased the suspension to 11 days. McGillivray's lawyer Matt Tutt lodged an appeal against the internal review decision at the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and was granted a stay pending the hearing.

Wilson Disqualified For 12 MonthsGold Coast trainer Marcus Wilson has been disqualified for 12 months on two cobalt related charges. Queensland Racing Integrity Commission stewards heard cobalt was detected in urine samples taken from Steering (Henrythenavigator) at the Gold Coast on 19 November and Lyra at Ipswich (Trusting) on 16 December. Earlier this year, evidence was taken from Wilson and staff from the QRIC Racing Science Centre. At a resumed inquiry, Wilson was charged with two counts under AR 178 which covers bringing a horse to a racecourse with an illegal substance. Wilson pleaded guilty to both charges and his legal representative made detailed submissions regarding penalty. He was disqualified for 12 months.

High Church, Golden Oldies Nominated For AwardWarrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m) winner High Church (High Chaparral) and Ararat Gold Cup (2000m) victor Golden Oldies (Soldier’s Tale) are among the Horse Of The Year nominees for next month's Country Racing Victoria Awards. The Darren Weir-trained High Church, who also won the Werribee Cup (2030m) in December, and the Terry and Karina O'Sullivan-trained Golden Oldies head five finalists for the award, which

will be presented at the Country Racing Victoria Awards night in Melbourne on 26 August.

New Zealand

Kawi Set For Hawke’s Bay CarnivalTrainer Allan Sharrock is hoping Kawi (Savabeel) can emulate multiple Group One winner Mufhasa (Pentire) during the Hawke’s Bay Carnival in the spring. Kawi has won six Group One races in New Zealand, two behind the record held by Mufhasa, and the rising seven-year-old is likely to resume in the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) at Te Rapa on 19 August. "Mufhasa won eight Group One races here and Seachange won seven," Sharrock said. "I know Mufhasa won another two in Australia, but to emulate his record here is something I would love to do. He'll probably go to Te Rapa to the Foxbridge Plate and he'll be nominated for the Tarzino Trophy and then the Windsor Park Plate."

Sydney Likely For HiflyerThe Peter Lock-trained Hiflyer (Tavistock) is likely to campaign in Sydney during his new season campaign, with the rising five-year-old building up for his return. The talented gelding, who has won five of his 14 race starts, has not raced since finishing runner up at Ellerslie on 22 April. “We were looking at going to the Foxbridge Plate and then the first day of the Hastings carnival, but they are probably going to come up too quickly,” Lock said. “It makes sense to go to Sydney. It’s very tempting and a trip over there and a good look around would really help to furnish the horse. It’s only three hours or so away and it might be a better fit than staying here on the wet tracks.”

Art Deco Trials WellArt Deco (Road To Rock), a four-year-old mare trained by Allan Sharrock, ran second in a Waverley barrier trial over 1000 metres on Tuesday as she looks to continue her strong campaign. Art Deco was a last-start winner at Tauranga on 24 June and was given the public hit out by Sharrock this week. “She just went super. We’re looking forward to the Opunake Cup, that has always been her main aim, and then she’ll go to the Merial Mile at Awapuni,” Sharrock said. Art Deco has impressively made her way through the grades with five wins and nine placings from her 14 appearances.

Second Breathing Op For Sweet LeaderPromising three-year-old Sweet Leader (O’Reilly) has undergone a second breathing operation, co-trainer Lance O’Sullivan has confirmed. The lightly raced colt won the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at his last start in April, and O’Sullivan, who trains in partnership with Andrew Scott, still believes he has Group One potential. “It’s a real shame because he’s obviously such a talented horse,” O’Sullivan said. “We’ll wait and see how he does, but he could still be a Railway Stakes horse.”

First HK Win For Southern LegendThe Caspar Fownes-trained Southern Legend (Not A Single Doubt) secured his first win in Hong Kong in the Class Two Sweet Orange Handicap (1200m) at the final Happy Valley fixture of the season yesterday. The Australian-bred four-year-old was a Listed winner and Group Two-placed when trained by Les Bridge but finished down the field at his first Hong Kong start at Sha Tin in May. He took a big step forward last night, however, beating Super Turbo (Royal Applause) by half a length under Karis Teetan, with Verbinsky (Holy Roman Emperor) a further half-length behind in third. “I think he’s pretty decent,” winning rider Karis Teetan said. “His trial was good last time, with Joao (Moreira) on, and I was very lucky to pick up the ride. I think he’s a really nice horse, he’s not there yet, he’s still a bit green.”

International

Wuheida Set For Falmouth StakesThe unbeaten Charlie Appleby-trained Wuheida (Dubawi) has been declared for the Falmouth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket tomorrow. The unbeaten filly has been off the track since winning the Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr 1, 1600m) at Chantilly in October, and she is set to face just six rivals in the £200,000 Group One. Aidan O’Brien saddled Alice Springs (Galileo) to win the Falmouth Stakes 12 months ago and he relies on Roly Poly (War Front) this year, while the William Haggas-trained Sea Of Grace (Born To Sea), who ran second in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) at her last start, has also been declared. Click here to view the Newmarket declarations.

Brando Set To Return Dual Group Three-winning sprinter Brando (Pivotal) is set to return to the track in the July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Newmarket on Saturday. The Kevin Ryan-trained gelding, who ran third to The Tin Man (Equiano) in last season’s British Champions Sprint Stakes (Gr 1, 6f), has been off the track since finishing well beaten in the Duk Of York Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) in May, but he was found to have burst a blood vessel that day and is reportedly in good form. "He didn't run any sort of race at York last time, but he's done that (at York) before, and he also broke a blood vessel,” jockey Tom Eaves told the Racing Post. “He'd been improving up to then and he's been going well at home. We're happy with him.”

Minding Sister To DebutThe Aidan O’Brien-trained two-year-old Conquest (Galileo), a sister to the multiple Group One-winning filly Minding, is set to make her debut at Leopardstown today. The filly will face ten rivals in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden (7f) and holds an entry in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f), due to be run at the Curragh in September. Minding has won seven times at the highest level and took out the Mooresbridge Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2f) in May, but she has been off the track since then after suffering a setback ahead of an intended tilt at the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f).

Medaglia d’Oro Filly Makes Seven FiguresA yearling filly by Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) sold for a record-equalling US$1,000,000 at the Fasig-Tipton July Sale on Tuesday. The February-foaled bay filly, catalogued as Lot 290, was purchased by Larry Best, under the OXO Equine LLC banner, from the draft of Bluewater Sales LLC. The filly is the first foal out of the stakes-winning mare Hung The Moon (Malibu Moon) and is from the family of 2005 Iowa Oaks (Gr 3, 8.5f) winner Whimsy (Maria’s Mon). "I just try to review as many horses as I can, and when one strikes me as special, I consider it seriously," Best told Bloodhorse.com. "I just pick the horse I want to own; the market determines the value. It was the horse I was most interested in and it was high in the range of what I wanted to pay."

Three Lots Make US$300,000 Or MoreThree lots sold for US$300,000 or more at the sale, with the second top lot and the highest-priced colt of the sale being Lot 194, who was purchased for US$310,000 by Kenneth McPeek as agent for Fern Circle. By Orb (Malibu Moon), the colt is out of the five-time winner Aurora Prospect (Arch) making him a half-brother to the winning filly Solon’s Warning (Stormy Atlantic). Shortly afterwards Lot 235, a colt by Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday), was purchased for US$300,000 by Hartley / De Renzo Thoroughbreds. Consigned by Paramount Sales, the colt is out of the winning Cherokee Run (Runaway Groom) mare Diamond Fancy Free, a half-sister to the Grade One winner First Samurai (Giant’s Causeway).

Figures Up At July SaleFasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning Jr was pleased with the results of the one-day July Sale, which saw increases in each of the key statistics. Overall, 172 horses sold for US$16,107,000, an improvement of 2.2 per cent over last year when 183 horses sold for US$15,756,500. The average was US$93,645, an 8.8 per cent increase on US$86,101 in 2016, while the median of US$70,000 was 16.7 per cent higher than US$60,000 last year. The fee of US$1,000,000 for the top lot also matched a record that has stood since 1982. "You're always thrilled to have a horse break out and kind of get through the 'glass ceiling' like the million dollar filly did late today," Browning said. "It just demonstrates the strength of the market [and] if you put good horses in front of quality buyers, anything can happen. She was a lovely filly." Click here to view the sale results.

The Australian Turf Club (ATC) yesterday moved to reaffirm its long-term commitment to maintaining Canterbury as a

metropolitan Sydney racing venue, despite the valuable site being earmarked for a potential apartment development.

The 35-hectare racecourse site, which is owned by the ATC, cannot be sold until at least 2021 after a moratorium was imposed when the Australian Jockey Club and the Sydney Turf Club merged earlier this decade.

The NSW Department Of Planning is examining the site for potential rezoning to allow apartments and a school be constructed on the Canterbury racecourse.

The ATC communications manager Brett De Vine told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that the organisation was investing heavily in Canterbury and had no intention to sell off the land.

He said the number of night meetings at Canterbury would increase to 11, up from nine, in the coming season and was in the process

of enhancing training facilities on course at its quarantine centre for international horses participating at the Sydney carnivals.

“We are quite relaxed about (the rezoning) and there are absolutely no plans on the table at the moment to sell Canterbury Park,” De Vine said yesterday.

“We are investing in Canterbury. We are investing in upgrading the course proper and installing more training tracks for the internationals and we are expanding the night racing season again this year to 11 meetings.

“The idea of the ATC selling Canterbury is way off the mark.”

De Vine confirmed plans to have night racing at Randwick as soon as 2018, but denied the move would spell the end of racing under lights at Canterbury.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’Landys and ATC chief executive Darren Pearce have previously said they hope to have the 2018 $10,000,000 The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) run under lights at Randwick.

‘ATC Remain Committed To Canterbury’s Future’

“Lights at Randwick are certainly on the agenda. Peter V’Landys and Darren Pearce are on the record as saying they would like The Everest to be run under lights in 2018, but just because there are lights at Randwick does not mean the end (of night racing) at Canterbury,” De Vine said.

Canterbury is arguably Sydney’s most consistent racing surface and De Vine said the track’s drainage system was being modelled at reconstructed Kensington circuit at Randwick.

“We are using that base technology and framework of Canterbury to rebuild the Kensington track and use its drainage technology at Kensington, so that highlights its worth to Sydney racing,” he said.

Meanwhile, De Vine said new turf would not be laid on the Kensington track until the end of the winter with no date set for its return to racing.

“We are just going to wait until the end of this really cold winter until we lay grass. The turf should be laid at the back end of August. But I wouldn’t speculate about when we would see a horse gallop over it,” he said.

“They are taking their time to make sure we get it 100 per cent right. It has been over engineered and not leaving any stone unturned to ensure the track gets its best chance to grow and consolidate with a view to racing on it when it is ready.”

A sister to champion mare Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice) sold for 130,000 guineas at the opening session of the Tattersalls July Sale

in Newmarket yesterday. The nine-year-old broodmare La Pelegrina,

who was catalogued as Lot 179, was purchased by Badgers Bloodstock out of the Godolphin draft on day one of the three-day auction.

The mare has produced four foals to date, with the three to have raced so far all successful on the track, and in 2016 she produced a filly foal by Pivotal (Polar Falcon).

Tom Pritchard-Gordon of Badgers Bloodstock said that La Pelegrina had been bought for a partnership and was likely to continue her broodmare career in Australia.

"She is for an undisclosed client, a partnership. It is likely that she will end up in Australia, but she may stop off en route to visit a stallion,” Pritchard-Gordon said.

“She is not in-foal so that gives some flexibility. Her pedigree has a lot of international appeal.

"Her winning two-year-old (Way Of Wisdom) with Charlie Appleby looks useful."

Multiple Group One winner Miss Finland produced the 2015 Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Stay With Me (Street Cry), while her colt by Dundeel (High Chaparral) sold for $900,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year.

At time of going to print, Wild Mint (Medaglia d’Oro) was topping the first day of the July Sale after she was purchased for 290,000 guineas by SackvilleDonald from the Godolphin draft.

Catalogued as Lot 173, the unraced three-year-old filly is a sister to the American Grade One winner Violence, while her third dam is the multiple Grade One-winning and Grade Three-producing mare Sky Beauty (Blushing Groom).

Ed Sackville struck the winning bid to edge out Patrick Cooper, and he said she had been purchased as a breeding prospect.

"She has been bought for a new client as a breeding prospect and will be going overseas," Sackville said.

"She is a sister to a very good horse and a

descendant of a very good US mare. She is an attractive and scopey filly."

The second top lot was wildcard entry Gino Severini (Fastnet Rock), who was purchased for 200,000 guineas and will continue his career in Hong Kong.

The three-year-old gelding, catalogued as Lot 239A, won once from eight starts in Ireland for Fozzy Stack and was sold to Federico Barberini, on behalf of a Hong Kong-based client, from the draft of Thomastown Castle Stables.

He is a half-brother to the stakes winner Ithoughtitwasover (Hurricane Run), and Barberini said he will ship to Asia shortly ahead of the new season in Hong Kong.

"He has been bought on behalf of Marie Yoshida's Asian Bloodstock for a Hong Kong-based client," Barberini said.

"He will go into training in Hong Kong and will ship shortly.

"He is by a good sire (Fastnet Rock) that suits racing in the region and has a good profile for racing in Hong Kong."

Earlier in the session, Andrew Williams secured Lot 96, five-year-old mare Casila (High Chaparral), for 62,000 guineas from the consignment of Barton Stud.

The purchase was a first at Tattersalls for Williams, who recently founded Andrew Williams Bloodstock having previously worked for Arrowfield Stud.

Casila is carrying her first foal by Showcasing (Oasis Dream), is out of the Group Two-winning mare Miletrian (Marju) and is a half-sister to Inca Princess (Holy Roman Emperor), the dam of Group One winner Johannes Vermeer (Galileo).

"I am a massive fan of Showcasing, and High Chaparral is a good broodmare sire,” Williams said.

“It is a very deep but also current family and the pedigree offers great versatility.

"Casila may stay here to foal and be covered next spring or might journey to the southern hemisphere. All options are open."

Full statistics for the opening session at the Tattersalls July Sale will be printed in tomorrow’s issue.

Our Ivanhowe (GER), the 5th Euro-bred in the last 6 years to win the Ranvet S.-Gr.1

Polarisation (GB), the 5th Euro-bred in a row to win the Sydney Cup-Gr.1

The filly, who returned a 14/1 shot having finished down the field in the Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at her previous start, beat the odds-on favourite Actress (Declaration Of War) by a neck, with Now You’re Talking (Zoffany) just a short-head further behind in third.

The victory of Sirici also provided Coolmore stallion Choisir with his 83rd individual stakes winner.

At Nottingham on Saturday evening, the promising sprinter Mrs Gallagher (2 f Oasis Dream - A Huge Dream by Refuse To Bend)

regained the winning thread after defeat at Royal Ascot.

The William Jarvis-trained filly made an impressive winning debut at Ascot in May but raced on an unfavoured part of the track when 11th in the Queen Mary Stakes as the 10/1 third favourite.

She was quickly away under Martin Lane and made all the running to score a determined victory by a neck over the debutante Princess Keira (Acclamation), with the pair pulling a length and a half clear of Jive Lady (Exceed And Excel) in third.

The smart Karl Burke-trained sprinter Havana Grey (2 c Havana Gold - Blanc De Chine by Dark Angel) made all the running to win

the Dragon Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Sandown on Friday, his second stakes victory over the course and distance.

The grey colt employed the same front-running tactics to win the National Stakes (Listed, 5f) at the track in May before he performed below expectations when down the field in the Norfolk Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Royal Ascot.

He put that disappointment behind last week, breaking quickly from his draw in barrier two, and he was well-rated at the head of affairs by jockey PJ McDonald who still sat motionless as the field approached the final two furlongs.

Once asked to quicken, Havana Grey extended in pleasing fashion to beat the Godolphin-raced favourite Roussel (Kodiac), who finished second in the Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Royal Ascot, by a length and a quarter with To Wafij (Kodiac) a further neck behind in third place.

The Fozzy Stack-trained Sirici (2 f Choisir - Mironica by Excellent Art) caused an upset when winning the Tipperary Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Tipperary on Thursday evening.

The Godolphin-raced Thunder Snow (3 c Helmet - Eastern Joy by Dubai Destination) secured the second Group One race of his career when he landed the Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1600m) at Chantilly on Sunday.

The Saeed Bin Suroor-trained three-year-old, who was most recently seen running third behind Barney Roy (Excelebration) in the St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot, set steady fractions on the front end under Christophe Soumillon.

The Belgian jockey began to steadily

increase the tempo on the approach to the final 500 metres and the colt stretched clear in the straight to register a comfortable length and a quarter success over Trais Fluors (Dansili), with the same distance back to Gold Luck (Redoute’s Choice) in third.

Thunder Snow’s other top-level victory came in the Criterium International (Gr 1, 1400m) at Saint-Cloud as a two-year-old, when he beat South Seas (Lope De Vega) by five lengths.

Arrowfield Stud’s Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) sired his fifth stakes winner in Europe on Sunday, when the Nicolas Clement-trained Ibiza (3 f ex Olga Prekrasa by Kingmambo) won the Prix Chloe (Gr 3, 1800m) at Chantilly.

The three-year-old filly, who is a half-sister to last year’s Prix Jean Prat winner Zelzal (Sea The Stars), raced keenly in the early stages under Stephane Pasquier, but the jockey managed to get cover in behind the leaders before delivering his challenge approaching the 300 metres.

She quickened up in pleasing style under pressure and stayed on strongly to lead at the 100 metres, eventually beating Monroe Bay (Makfi) by three quarters of a length with another half a length back to Dallas Affair (Soldier Hollow) in third.

At Sandown on Saturday, the Charles Hills-trained and Shadwell-raced Battaash (3 g Dark Angel - Anna Law by Lawman) made all to win the Coral Charge Stakes (registered as the Sprint Stakes) (Gr 3, 5f) in a course record time.

The three-year-old gelding, who won the Scurry Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Sandown at his last start on 17 June, was bustled up by Dane O’Neill to take the lead early, and he raced keenly in the hands of the veteran jockey.

However, he was still full of running on the approach to the final furlong and shot clear in impressive fashion to beat Mirza (Oasis Dream) by three and a quarter lengths with another three lengths back to dual Group One winner Goldream (Oasis Dream) in third.

Battaash stopped the clock in a rapid 58.57 seconds over the stiff five furlongs at Sandown, and he is now among the favourites for the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at York on 25 August.

Later on the same card, the David Elsworth-trained Tisbutadream (3 f Dream Ahead - Choose Me by Choisir) ran out a game winner of the Coral Distaff (Listed, 1m).

The three-year-old filly set even fractions on the front end under Silvestre De Sousa but looked vulnerable approaching the final furlong as Queen Of Time (Harbour Watch) and Dancing Breeze (New Approach) loomed up to deliver their challenges.

However, De Sousa had rated the pace perfectly and the filly dug in close home to score by half a length, in the process providing Emirates Park shuttler Dream Ahead (Diktat) with his tenth stakes winner.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained and Niarchos Family-raced Ulysses (4 c Galileo - Light Shift by Kingmambo) held on for a narrow win in a thrilling Coral Eclipse (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Sandown on Saturday.

There was drama in the early stages of the

prestigious Group One, which is the first feature race of the British season which pits the three-year-olds against their elders, as the front-running Taj Mahal (Galileo) caused interference to dual Group One winner Decorated Knight (Galileo), who in turn badly hampered the Aidan O’Brien-trained favourite Cliffs Of Moher (Galileo).

All the while, Ulysses was ridden quietly towards the tail of the field by champion jockey Jim Crowley, and the pair cruised into contention on the outside of the field on the approach to the final furlong.

The colt, who is out of the 2007 Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Light Shift (Kingmambo), quickened into the lead with around 150 yards to race, but the Group One-winning three-year-old Barney Roy (Excelebration) rallied in the final strides to

force a photo finish, with the pair separated by a nose at the line in the £500,000 race.

Outsider Desert Encounter (Halling) ran on strongly to take third, a further three and a half lengths behind, while Cliffs Of Moher could not recover from the early trouble in running and ran on to take fourth.

Ulysses could tackle the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Ascot on 29 July at his next start.

At Haydock the same afternoon, the John Gosden-trained The Black Princess (4 f Iffraaj - Larceny by Cape Cross) proved too strong for her rivals in the Lancashire Oaks (Gr 2, 1m4f).

The multiple stakes-winning four-year-old was settled towards the tail of the field by jockey Robert Tart, for whom the Lancashire Oaks was the biggest victory of his career, and he sent the daughter of Iffraaj (Zafonic) after the well-backed favourite Abingdon (Street Cry) inside the final two furlongs.

She edged into the lead with 100 yards to race and ran on gamely to win by half a length, with with Ajman Princess (Teofilo) a further length behind in third, and the Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) at York in August looks a likely next target for the winner.

The Hughie Morrison-trained stayer Nearly Caught (7 g New Approach - Katch Me Katie by Danehill) gained an overdue success when winning the Coral Marathon (registered as the Esher Stakes) (Listed, 2m) at Sandown on Saturday.

The seven-year-old gelding, who won the Prix Kergorlay (Gr 2, 3000m) and finished third in the Prix du Cadran (Gr 1, 4100m) last season, was ridden patiently by James Doyle in an evenly run contest.

He moved strongly into the lead just over a furlong out and ran on bravely to fend off the Chester Cup (2m2.5f) winner Montaly (Yeats) by three quarters of a length with Alyssa (Sir Percy) a further length behind in third place.

OverviewDual Group One-winning sprinter Extreme Choice will join the stallion

roster at Newgate Farm this spring. The former Mick Price-trained colt won four and placed in one of his

eight career starts, amassing total career earnings of $1,736,250.The son of Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) was raced by a

partnership including Newgate Farm, China Horse Club and Aquis Farm, and he was purchased for $100,000 by Mick Price Racing at the 2015 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from the draft of Bell River Thoroughbreds.

Having shown plenty of dash to win a 900 metre barrier trial at Rosehill in December 2015, Extreme Choice made his debut in the Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) four days later and showed a smart turn of foot to win the $500,000 race by two lengths.

He preserved his unbeaten record with an emphatic four and a half length win in the Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield next time out, and he was duly supported into $2.80 favouritism for the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at the same track at his next start.

He was settled just in behind the leaders under Craig Newitt on that occasion and, having loomed on the home turn, he sprinted clear in the $1,500,000 feature to win by a length and three quarters from stablemate Flying Artie (Artie Schiller).

“He’s just a jet,” Newitt said following that victory. “He’s like a ten-year-old - all he wants to do is please you. He’s got a motor-and-a-half. I was caught four and five-wide then, but I knew I only had one corner to go around, so I just had to keep him balanced.”

The Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) followed, but he missed the break and lost all chance at the start, eventually keeping on to take eighth place, and he was spelled ahead of a three-year-old campaign thereafter.

Price targeted the colt at the weight for age A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley first up in September, and he quickened impressively from the home turn to beat a classy field by a length and a quarter.

He was far from disgraced when fifth next up in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as the Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m), and having run third in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) and sixth in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m), he was retired to take up stallion duties.

“It has been a privilege to train two colts as genuinely exceptional as Extreme Choice and Flying Artie,” Price said of the former stablemates.

“They will be missed in the stable, however they retire to stud as colts that have the potential to make a major impact on the Australian breeding industry.”

Extreme Choice is one of five named foals out of the unraced Hussonet (Mr. Prospector) mare Extremely, making him a brother to the stakes-placed Raise No Doubt and a half brother to a further two winners.

His second dam is the Canadian stakes winner Going To Extremes (Nasty And Bold) while his stakes-placed third dam is a half sister to the stakes-placed American performer Vauge Endeavour (Vagaries).

Further back, this is also the family of stakes winners Eastern Rise (Rising Market), Fleet Shoe (The Shoe), Joe K. Jr. (Droll Role) and Joe K’s. Lester (Sweet Candy).

Extreme Choice will stand for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST) this spring.

The highlight performance of Flemington’s Finals Day on Saturday was undoubtedly posted by two-year-old Royal Symphony’s

(Domesday) [116p] in the Taj Rossi Final (registered as Gibson Carmichael Stakes) (Listed, 1600m), writes Adam Blencowe.

Good times were the order of the day, with Flemington racing remarkably well for the depths of a Melbourne winter, but even factoring for the favourable conditions the overall time and Timeform rating achieved by Royal Symphony are impressive.

Royal Symphony went into the race rated 110p and comes out rated 116p, a rating well in advance of what would be expected from a Listed winner at this time of year, and a rating good enough to place him among the best of his generation so far.

In a season where several of the key two-year-old races in Sydney have been fought on heavy tracks the Timeform juvenile pecking order is hardly clear cut.

The Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) [119] and the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Invader (Snitzel) [119] now sit atop the current Timeform Two-Year-Old ladder.

And their peak ratings taken in those respective wins came on heavy ground that hopefully will not be as commonplace in their three-year-old year.

The current table looks similar to 2013/2014 when Mossfun (Mossman) [119], Earthquake (Exceed And Excel) [119] and Rubick (Encosta De Lago) [119] shared top billing - the only other time this century the top juvenile was not rated higher than 120.

With it looking certain that 2016/2017 will fail to throw up a 120-rated two-year-old, this season’s result could have been due more to a case of poor circumstances as opposed to a poor crop.

The Tony McEvoy-trained colt Royal Symphony staged a very good effort in winning last Saturday.

After missing the start, he improved to race

in seventh place before running away in the straight to score by four and a quarter lengths from the filly Anchor Bid (High Chaparral) [93) with Evil Cry (Street Cry) [94] just under a length away in third.

The Darren Weir-trained filly Anchor Bid may have finished a distant second but she still impressed, her 93 rating being around the level that we have seen winning the Taj Rossi Series Final in recent times.

While the Robbie Laing-trained colt Evil Cry was slightly below his best form to date but settled a touch closer than ideal on the strong tempo, and given that plus he was also quickly up to 1600 metres from 1200 metres, his effort was credible in holding on for third.

Factoring for the suitable conditions the overall time of 1:35.58 posted by Royal Symphony comes out as a particularly smart one.

Royal Symphony was the feature performance on the Flemington program but the VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (Listed, 1600m) was the feature race where Tshahitsi (Clangalang) [109] continued his good form.

Tshahitsi also maintained the good form of Tasmanian-trained horses on the mainland who have appeared to be no-nonsense, on-speed, tough and particularly likeable racehorses.

The Cleaner (Savoir Vivre) [123] is the most famous of these hard-running Tasmanians but the likes of Kenjorwood (Snippetson) [114], Royal Rapture (Clangalang) [115], Hellova Street (Helike) [107], and now Tshahitsi, all

possess similar attributes.Tshahitsi, a five-year-old gelding trained by

Chris Crook and Imogen Miller, rated 109 on Saturday, matching the peak he achieved when winning the Rod Johnson Handicap (1400m) at Flemington two starts prior on 10 June.

Speed figure devotees will be quick to point out that it falls short of what Tshahitsi produced in that win but it is always well worth noting that it is easier to run a slow time than a fast one.

The distribution of times is therefore skewed to slow, which is why speed figures are volatile and largely useless on their own.

There are plenty of other points of information to draw on, not least the prior levels - speed or otherwise - that the horses have achieved, the expected level of performance, based both on those prior rating levels and the wonderfully efficient betting market, and expected performance based on the history of the race.

Tshahitsi was not as fast from A to B at 1600 metres on Saturday but he was every bit as effective even if the form will probably struggle to make an impact at higher levels in the future, it certainly served its purpose on Finals Day.

And, for the record, the other Listed finals on Saturday, the A R Creswick Series Final (Listed, 1200m) and the All Victorian Sprint Series Final (Listed, 1200m) were taken out, respectively, by the Lindsay Park-trained colt Highland Beat (Exceed And Excel) [96] and the Robert Smerdon-trained gelding Ability (Reward For Effort) [104].

Analysis: Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Calanda, did well in winning here, his fifth win and his first at stakes level in 11 starts to date. He settled in seventh place on the rails, got along the inner at the home turn, went to the front at the 100m and then battled on well score a narrow but good win. Top weight (59.5kg) The Monstar was smartly away and went straight to the front. But he veered deep from the 600m, was still held the front at the 200m, before being headed shortly afterwards. He then fought gamely (despite hanging out) for a very good second, conceding 5kg to the winner. Flippant, a stablemate of the winner, was fourth early on before getting through to lead on turning for home. She then battled well, holding on for a good third.

Analysis: After showing promise with seconds in two of four starts since resuming, Ron Quinton-trained filly Duchess Pedrille scored her first win in eight starts here. She began well and soon worked to the front. She then travelled well, grabbed a break at the 200m and then went on to score nicely.

JAMES HARRON BLOODSTOCK

Analysis: In a three-way finish, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Hypnotist did well in winning, albeit narrowly, maintaining his unbeaten record in three starts after wins at the Newcastle Belmont track. He settled in third place, moved up at the 600m, challenged at the 200m and fought a bit too well to win in a photo. Uncle Rodriguez was third early on before making a quick move to lead at the 1200m. He got a break on straightening and then fought very well for a good second while the David Payne-trained filly All Too Soon caught the eye running after being in sixth place (wide out) at the 400m for a late-closing third, in a promising effort at her second race start.

Analysis: Chris Waller-trained filly Awoke scored a narrow first up win, her third win in nine starts to date. She settled in fifth place on the rails from her inside barrier (1), got through to the third on turning for home and finished a bit too well to grab a last-stride win. The Pharoah went to the front, looked the winner when he dashed clear on straightening, only to be caught right at the post for a close second after running a bold race at his second run this preparation.
