A MAIDEN NO LONGER!SHAMUS AWARD BECOMES SNITZEL’S SECOND GROUP ONE WINNER

“Not much has gone his way the

whole spring until the last seven

days,” said trainer Danny O’Brien

after his three-year-old colt Shamus

Award (Snitzel) recorded a long-shot victory

in yesterday’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at

Moonee Valley, writes Kristen Manning.

Gaining a run, after the scratching

on Thursday of star mare Atlantic Jewel

(Fastnet Rock), as first emergency, Shamus

Award was a controversial inclusion in the

final field having never won a race.

He had however, in a nine start career,

amassed over $260,000 in prize money

and was an eye-catching third in the

Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at his

previous outing.

A horse who, according to the stable,

was unlucky on a number of occasions,

Shamus Award is not the first horse to

break their maiden in a Melbourne Spring

Carnival feature – horses such as Redding

(Nassipour) and Fire Oak (Oak Ridge)

doing so in the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).

Australia’s major weight-for-age

contest against older horses is a different

story however and it was thanks largely

to a brilliant riding performance by Chad

Schofield that enabled Shamus Award to

pinch the prize.

Jumping well to take an early lead,

Shamus Award was tackled early by a

fractious Puissance De Lune (Shamardal)

with fellow three-year-old Long John (Street

Cry) also challenging.

They soon dropped off however, leaving

Schofield able to hold the rails. His mount

came underneath him after the first turn

and was then able to dictate terms from

then on.

Making his run from well before the turn, Shamus Award had his

older and more experienced rivals well and truly off the bit at the top

of the straight.

“He was strong to the line,” said Schofield.

Holding off a late challenge from a gallant Happy Trails (Good

Journey), Shamus Award won the Cox Plate by a nose in 2:05.27

seconds well outside the record held by champion Might And Power

(Zabeel).

Dwayne Dunn, rider of Happy Trails, was disappointed but proud

of his horse.

“I thought at the top of the straight I was going to run them

down – but he’s got 59kg and the other horse has 49.5, that’s the

difference, weight is a killer, but the horse is flying.”

Running a great race to finish third just half a length away was the

European import Fiorente (Monsun) whose effort saw his Melbourne

Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) price trimmed into favouritism.

“It was a fantastic run,” said jockey Blake Shinn. “I thought I was

the winner at the 500m but the winner had the weight pull and was

just a little bit stronger. It was a great Melbourne Cup trial.”

Fellow import Foreteller (Dansili) was fourth and Super Cool

(Fastnet Rock) fifth.

Busy taking congratulations from other apprentices, Chad

Schofield was understandably excited.

“I wanted to win a Group One badly,” he said.

“And what a way to do it – the Cox Plate!”

In Sydney Glyn Schofield, who kicked home a treble on the

Rosehill card, was one very proud father, declaring that, “this is the

best moment of my life… unbelievable… what a ride!”

“I’m having a beer and then I’m going straight to the airport to

get onto a plane to Melbourne to celebrate.”

Also in celebratory mode was Danny O’Brien who had been

confident of a bold showing by his three-year-old.

“He has been a high-class colt,” he said.

“He was a maiden going into today because a few things hadn’t

gone his way. We certainly went in knowing he was in great order,

he’d had the perfect preparation go to the 2040m and once he drew

well we were always going to be aggressive.”

Bred by Robert Hannon and sold at the 2012 Inglis Easter

Yearling Sale for $230,000, Shamus Award is the 16th stakes

winner and second Group One winner, Sizzling the other, for Oakleigh

Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice).

And it is the first Cox Plate winner for the Redoute’s Choice

(Danehill) sire line, noting that that high class horse finished fifth in

Sunline’s (Desert Sun) first Cox Plate.

Bred on the same Danehill (Danzig)/Success Express (Hold Your

Peace) cross as the big race winners Sea Siren (Fastnet Rock), Gold

Edition (Lion Hunter) and Excites (Danewin), Shamus Award is the fifth

foal produced by the city winner Sunset Express (Success Express).

Also dam of the metropolitan winner Sunset Coast (Dubleo), she

was served last spring by Snitzel. She hails from a consistent family

being a half-sister to the tough two times Group winning Singapore

based galloper Ghozi (Catbird) out of a daughter of the Irish Group

Three winner From The Wood (Tap On Wood).

Shamus Award’s (3 c Snitzel - Sunset Express by Success

Express) record now stands at one win from 10 starts and after

yesterday’s victory his prize money totals $2,112,500.

WHAT THE JOCKEY’S SAID:

Chad Schofield (Shamus Award) 1st: “I was confident the horse

would run well. I had a couple of looks in the last hundred metres

and I could see Happy Trails flying. I wasn’t sure but Michael Rodd

pointed out the camera which was on me.”

Dwayne Dunn (Happy Trails) 2nd: “Another great effort ... just

missed.”

Blake Shinn (Fiorente) 3rd: “A fantastic run. I thought I was the

winner at the 500 (metres) but the winner with the weight pull was

just a little bit stronger. It was a great Melbourne Cup trial.”

Craig Newitt (Foreteller) 4th: “Great run. It’s as good as he goes.

I’m sure he’ll win more Group Ones.”

Corey Brown (Super Cool) 5th: “He ran really good. He had to work

from a wide gate and didn’t have a lot luck until we got down near

the mile.”

Craig Williams (Side Glance) 6th: “He was so keen. He’s done an

amazing job to be so aggressive the whole race to still run sixth in

our best weight-for-age race. Excellent effort.”

Hugh Bowman (Seville) 7th: “Very happy.”

James McDonald (It’s A Dundeel) 8th: “We had to have a crack. We

weren’t going to win by going back. It just never panned out. There’s

always another year.”

Brett Prebble (Green Moon) 9th DH: “Ran super. Had no hope

because the race was way too slow.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Long John) 9th DH: “We got into a nice spot. He just

couldn’t handle the Valley and the class of race.”

Steven Arnold (Mull Of Killough) 11th: “Even run. Just got shuffled

back down the side. He probably would have been better off if he

was outside the leader.”

Ben Melham (Puissance De Lune) 12th: “He didn’t let go at all.

He had a good run throughout but he didn’t fire a shot for whatever

reason.”

Michael Rodd (Masked Marvel) 13th: “He’s going good for two

miles.”

Mark Zahra (Rekindled Interest) Last: “No good.”

A SAVVY PERFORMANCE

Rounding up the field at the turn and racing away to an impressive

three length victory in yesterday’s Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m),

Sydney-trained gelding Savvy Nature (Savabeel) signalled that he is a

major contender for next weekend’s VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).

Having his first run in Melbourne, the John O’Shea-trained three-

year-old is a horse who has been nicely primed for a Classic distance

and O’Shea is confident that he will run out the Derby trip.

“He is by a son of Zabeel out of Carnegie mare,” he said.

“So he is bred to stay and he relaxes in his races - that is so

important.

“This race has traditionally been a great guide to the Derby and

hopefully it is this year as well,” O’Shea added.

In the placings behind fellow Derby aspirant Complacent

(Authorized) and his last two starts in Sydney, Savvy Nature proved

the strength of that form.

And he seems to have improved, appreciating the addition of

blinkers and a tongue-tie, Savvy Nature impressing his jockey James

McDonald.

“He was sharp,” he told connections.

“When I wanted him to go – he went!

“I was in a pretty sticky situation early,” he said, admitting that he

was further back than he thought ideal.

“But I didn’t want to force the issue, I wanted to get him into a

rhythm and then I let him slide into the race under his own steam.”

Noting that the still relatively inexperienced horse took some

fright at the crowd as he rounded the turn, McDonald said that Cox

Plate Day is a big experience for a young horse.

Saying that he was extremely pleased with his horse’s effort and

O’Shea is looking forward to the Derby.

“He did all the right thinks you want to see for next week. He

attacked the line well after making a long, searching run.”

Boasting an interesting pedigree with his grandsire Zabeel (Sir

Tristram) and dam sire Carnegie (Sadler’s Wells) closely related,

Savvy Nature is one of 27 stakes winners for Savabeel who won the

2004 Cox Plate as a three-year-old.

Attempting to become that stallion’s second VRC Derby winner,

Sangster successful in 2011, Savvy Nature is a half-brother to the

Macau-based stakes placegetter Hostwin Challenge (Testa Rossa)

out of the unraced Generous Nature (Carnegie), daughter of the two

time Listed winner and Group One placed La Lagune (Danehill).

A NZ$200,000 purchase by his trainer at the 2012 New Zealand

Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale, Savvy Nature’s (3 g Savabeel -

Generous Nature by Carnegie) record stands at three wins from

seven starts and two placings for prize money of $346,150.

THERMAL CURRENT

A horse who trainer Peter Moody thinks will be all the better next

year, Thermal Current (Exceed And Excel) recorded a gutsy victory in

the Telstra Phonewords Stakes (registered as: Red Anchor Stakes)

(Gr 3, 1200m).

He beat the $2.25 favourite Not Listenin’tome (Dylan Thomas)

by a head with Selectify (Redoute’s Choice) a further half length back

in third.

A well-travelled three-year-old who was a close up seventh in

Zoustar’s (Northern Meteor) Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) at his most

recent outing, Thermal Current has always been highly regarded by

connections.

“He is a very good colt and we have always pictured him at the

top level,” Moody enthused.

“He has just lacked that bit of maturity,” he added.

“And he will come back better in the autumn.”

To decide on Thermal Current’s immediate future after a chat

with his owners, Moody said he would be happy to send the colt for

a spell, noting that he won his maiden at Geelong just three starts

ago on 16 August.

A homebred for Contract Racing, Thermal Current (3 c Exceed

And Excel - Soaressa by Twining) is his in-form sire’s Exceed And

Excel’s (Danehill) 76th stakes winner. Bred on a 3 X 4 cross of

Danzig, he is the first foal for the Listed winner Soaressa (Twining).

Recently foaling a filly by Stratum (Redoute’s Choice), Soaressa

is one of three stakes winners produced by the excellent broodmare

Wedgetail Eagle (Lure) – also dam of the Listed winners Impressive

Eagle (Rubiton) and Assertive Eagle (Danewin).

Yesterday’s victory was Thermal Current’s second from seven

starts. He has been placed second twice and third twice for earnings

totalling $184,500.

SETTING A WINNING PRECEDENCE

In an era where the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) is being dominated

by northern hemisphere-bred horses, who have been making up a

large percentage of the field in recent years, it will be no mean feat

should Precedence (Zabeel) make it into this year’s race.

For he has already contested the big handicap on three

occasions, finishing a somewhat unlucky ninth last year, 11th the

year before and eighth in 2010.

On two of those occasions he contested the Moonee Valley Gold

Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) in the lead-up, winning the race in 2010 and

again in easy fashion yesterday.

Settling back, patiently ridden by Craig Williams, the eight-year-

old made his run at the turn, quickly putting ground on his rivals and

racing away to a one and a half length victory over Shoreham (Reset)

with the consistent Gotta Take Care (Rubiton) third.

“He was brilliant,” Williams said, noting that “they have been

training him differently this year, today he was third up into this race

instead of fifth up so he still has that freshness about him.

“He is a big chance in the Melbourne Cup,” he continued.

“Without a doubt. He’s got the Bart Cummings factor and it would

be great for the 2013 Melbourne Cup if Bart and James Cummings

had a runner.”

Which depends on the penalty, due to be announced on Monday,

with Precedence currently 44th in Cup order.

James Cummings is hoping for a run.

“We’ll be more than happy to take them on,” he said.

“Precedence has got a zest for it and he’s got some unfinished

business. He is by Zabeel and it’s a great pedigree for horses that

go better with age.

“Don’t forget that when Bart struck with Comic Court it was his

third go at the Cup!”

One of the mighty Zabeel’s (Sir Tristram) 148 stakes winners,

Precedence (8 g Zabeel - Kowtow by Shadeed) is out of the imported

mare Kowtow (Shadeed), half-sister to the dam of New Zealand

Champion Sprinter Tavistock (Montjeu).

Following yesterday’s win, Precedence’s race record stands at

nine wins from 54 starts with eight further placings and prize money

of $1,460,530.

TOYDINI PLAYS WITH RIVALS

Toydini (Bernardini) continued the good run of interstate horses

at the Melbourne Spring Carnival with a determined victory in the

Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) yesterday.

Recording the fifth win of his consistent 17 start career, the

Guy Walter trained four-year-old sustained a long run around the

field, joining the lead early in the straight only to have Speediness

(Testa Rossa) make a strong challenge. Last season’s Doncaster

Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Sacred Falls (O’Reilly) finished a close

third.

But in a tight finish Toydini prevailed, much to Walter’s

satisfaction with the trainer confident that the gelding still has scope

for improvement.

“He is a progressive horse,” he said.

“His better days are ahead.”

Looking forward to taking on Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m)

winner Boban, also by Bernardini (A P Indy) in the Emirates Stakes

(Gr 1, 1600m) on the final day of the Flemington carnival, Walter

said that: “on the bigger track at Flemington he will be even better

suited.”

Jockey Blake Shinn was thrilled by Toydini’s gutsy performance.

“I love this horse!” he enthused.

“He has got the potential to win a Group One race.”

Not always happy during the running yesterday, Shinn said that:

“we got into a good position but noting was taking me into the race

and he lost a bit of momentum going wide at the turn – but he

wanted to win, it was a great effort.”

Walter agreed.

“I was impressed with his will to win,” he said.

Training Toydini’s dam Johan’s Toy (Johan Cruyff) to two Listed

victories and seconds in the Epsom and Doncaster Handicaps, Walter

celebrated with the horses owners and breeders the Bergstrom

family, long time clients of the stable.

One of shuttler Bernardini’s 23 stakes winners, Toydini has

as his fourth dam the wonderful mare Toy Show (Showdown) who

also showed a liking for the Moonee Valley circuit winning the 1977

William Reid Stakes (Gr1, 1200m).

In 17 starts, Toydini (4 g Bernardini - Johan’s Toy by Johan

Cruyff) has now won five times with his prize money just exceeding

$575,000.

CAN’T CATCH CATKINS

“You only have to look at her record to see that she is a good

horse,” said proud trainer Chris Waller of Catkins (Dubawi) after

her win under a big weight in the Eliza Park International Stakes

(registered as: Tesio Stakes) (Gr 3, 1600m) yesterday.

A consistent eight time winner from 16 starts, with a further

five placings to her credit, Catkins has been racing in fine form

during her Melbourne visit, three starts ago taking out the How

Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield.

A chance to back up in next weekend’s Myer Classic (Gr 1,

1600m) (registered as: Empire Rose Stakes), in which she would

take on classy stablemate Red Tracer (Dane Shadow), Catkins

was racing at the mile for the first time and her one length victory

over Cameo (Shamardal) and Lake Sententia (California Dane)

proved that she has no qualms at the trip.

“She gave a very good kick at the turn – I couldn’t believe how

well she quickened with the big weight,” said Waller, noting that

Craig Newitt’s performance was a good one.

“He got her into a perfect position from an awkward gate and

he never panicked.”

Confident that the four-year-old will be all the stronger in the

autumn, Waller has already signalled out the Coolmore Classic

(Gr 1, 1500m) as her aim next time in.

“It looks an ideal race for her on her home track,” he said.

Raced in the all cerise of Ingham Racing, Catkins fetched

$85,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

from the draft of Amarina Farm. One of the 63 stakes winners

by her former shuttler sire Dubawi (Dubai Millenium), Catkins

is out of the lightly raced Salix Caprea (Catbird), a half-sister to

the Listed winner Rally (Desert Style). From her eight victories,

Catkins (4 m Dubawi - Salix Caprea by Catbird) has now netted

$581,210 in prize money.

Betting: $21.00, $12.00, $8.00.

Then followed: Foreteller (GB), Super Cool (AUS), Side Glance (GB),

Seville (GER), It’s A Dundeel (NZ), Long John (AUS), Green

Moon (IRE), Mull Of Killough (IRE), Puissance De Lune (IRE),

Masked Marvel (GB) & Rekindled Interest (AUS), last.

Analysis: Three-year-old colt Shamus Award was smartly away from

his good barrier (3) and went to the lead. He travelled along nicely

in front, setting a good tempo. He was challenged from the 600m

point and responded to Chad Schofield’s urgings nearing the turn

and grabbed a good break on straightening. He then fought back

gamely with his light weight (49.5kg) to hold on to win narrowly but

impressively - his first win after seven placings in ten starts. Happy

Trails travelled well in eighth place on the rails before getting a split

approaching the home turn. He went to fourth at on straightening

and ran on nicely for a late-closing second. Fiorente began well

from his outside barrier (14) and eased to be midfield early, but

he was caught three wide, so Blake Shinn took him forward. After

working he eventually crossed to race outside the leader (Shamus

Award) at the 1000m point. He challenged strongly nearing the turn,

momentarily lost ground on straightening and then kept fighting on

for a game third, putting up a sound trial for the Melbourne Cup (Gr

1, 3200m). Foreteller settled just past midfield on the rails and

remained there to the 600m. He got a good run through to sixth

rounding the home turn and continued to run on well for a sound

one and a quarter lengths fourth. Super Cool was handy all the

way and held on for fifth while Side Glance (sixth) had a good trip

third on the rails. Seville was just past midfield (three wide with

cover). He make a strong run wide-out approaching the home turn

before battling on for five and a half lengths seventh. It’s A Dundeel

($4 fav) was caught wide from his barrier (12) midfield three deep

most of the way. He put in a run nearing the home turn but only

struggled from that point, running below his best to finish five and

a half lengths eighth. Long John was a handy fifth most of the

way before weakening for ninth. Last year’s Melbourne Cup winner

Green Moon was always well back, made a wide run from the 600m

but disappointed finishing ninth as well while Puissance De Lune

was about sixth to the 600m, went wide from there but dropped out

shortly afterwards to finish a most disappointing twelfth.

Then followed: Tips And Beers (AUS), Drago (AUS), Storm Approach

Analysis: Classy Sydney-trained three-year-old Savvy Nature made

strong claims for next Saturday’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) with

a decisive win. James McDonald rode him patiently, remaining

in last place in the eight-horse field before improving wide from

the 600m. But he was hanging and racing a little ungenerously

from that point, probably due to having his first run this direction

and at the Moonee Valley circuit. But he proved too strong on

straightening and drew clear to win decisively by three lengths. The

$201 outsider All Rigged Up raced in third place on the rails, was

under pressure nearing the turn but kept fighting on surprisingly

well in the straight to take second. Pinstripe Lane was second last

on the rails, before improving under riding approaching the home

turn. He fanned wide at the bend and kept plugging on nicely for a

sound third. Tips And Beers held on for fourth with Drago tiring for

fifth after missing the start and coming from last in an early move

to take the lead.

Analysis: Precedence travelled well in sixth place, one off the rails,

before improving with a good run from the 600m point. He challenged

four wide nearing the home turn, took the lead on straightening

and went to the line strongly in a sound trial for a Melbourne Cup

(Gr 1, 3200m) start, at this third run this preparation with perfect

Cummings’ timing. Shoreham had a good trip in third spot on the

rails most of the way to the 600m. He then battled on quite well

in the straight for second, finding the winner too good. Gotta Take

Care was ridden patiently and raced near the rear before being

shuffled back to last in the eight-horse field at the 600m. He got a

rails run nearing the turn and kept plugging on well along the rails

to take third. Mourinho led to the field to the home turn but tired

from that point for fourth. The favourite Sneak A Peek was a handy

fourth to the 600m, put in a run approaching the turn but dropped

out from the turn to finish last in a most disappointing effort.

Then followed: Rain Drum (AUS), Blackie (NZ), Malavio (AUS),

December Draw (IRE), Lord Of Brazil (NZ), Transporter (AUS)

Analysis: Toydini began well but Blake Shinn rode him patiently, as

usual, and eased him to settle back in eighth place in the ten-horse

field. He improved wide with cover from the 600m, fanned very wide

nearing the home turn, challenged at the 100m and lifted in the

closing stages to score a gutsy short head win. Speediness was

ridden closer to the pace from his improved barrier (2) and race

raced in about third spot on the rails to the 600m. He challenged

coming to the turn and looked the winner when he took a clear

lead at the 100m and was only to be caught nearing the post for

second. Sacred Falls travelled well in seventh place on the rails

and was switched between runners at the 600m to be fifth turning

for home. He then kept making ground in the straight for a close

third, putting up a good effort. Rain Drum led until half way down

the straight before weakening to finish fourth, beaten length and

half.

Analysis: Accomplished on rain-affected going and wearing blinkers for

the first time, last start winner Sacred Park proved in winning that he

was worthy of his favouritism. Sharing the lead, on the rail, with Role

Model, he was headed for a brief moment by his female adversary at

the 150m but pulled out more over the concluding stages as the pair

worked away their rivals. Role Model had given Sacred Park plenty to

think about during the race and was right up to the task in finishing a

close second. After racing three wide, without cover, in midfield, Lucky

Feather went up to challenge turning for home and rallied strongly

to hold third ahead of Lord Turbo, who made ground near the rail for

fourth, while Percy followed a similar path in finishing fifth.

but was blocked on straightening before Ben Melham angled the

colt back to the rails at the 100m. He then came with a strong finish

to grab a good (long head) win. The lightly raced and promising colt

Not Listenin’tome travelled well in seventh spot on the rails. He

switched out to be fifth approaching the turn, fanned wide at the

bend, challenged strongly at the 100m and was just caught in the

last few strides for a very good second which was his first defeat

in three starts. It was a big rise in class today and he has a lot of

potential. Selectify, a winner of his only start in a recent Bendigo

Maiden, raced keenly in fifth place, one off the rails. He hung out

rounding the home turn and then battled on strongly in the straight

for a close third. He also looks destined for better things. The NZ

filly Ruud Awakening led the field to the 100m point and just held

on to take fourth.

Analysis: Having worked through the grades with a liking for

heavy footing, Danza Lad struck rain-affected conditions to suit in

recording his biggest win. Never closer than three off the fence,

Danza Lad commenced a run around the field from the 700m

and kept responding to urgings in a very tough performance. Neo

capitalized on a nice trip in the trail to finish second. The effort of

top weight Spiro, under 59kgs, had plenty of merit as he was forced

to travel three wide, without cover, near the pace and stuck gamely

for third. Fourth placed Karla Bruni had the most momentum late

in the piece after coming out of midfield and Pero ran on nicely for

fifth after settling three back on the rail.

Analysis: The impressive Barakey resumed with another win - his twelfth

in thirteen starts. He began quickly and went straight to the lead. He

drew well clear approaching the home turn and looked set for an easy

win, but he was tiring in the latter stages and lasted to win narrowly

at his first start since March. Power Princess was a distant sixth on

the rails to the 600m point. She was still giving the leader about eight

lengths at the 400m, before coming with a good run for a late-closing

second. Checkpoint chased the winner most of the way and he kept

fighting on gamely all to way, eventually finishing (one length) third.

Margins: 1 len, 0.5 lens. Time: 1:37.77 (last 600m 35.91).

Analysis: Catkins was smartly away from barrier eight and after

showing early pace, Craig Newitt eased her to get a good trip in

fourth place. She was held up, between runners, approaching the

home turn and switched to the rails on turning for home. She then

sprinted well to score a clear one length win at the post. Cameo

raced outside the leader, went to the front nearing the home turn

and battled on gamely in the straight for second. Lake Sententia

($4.25 fav) was ridden quietly as usual and settled back in back

in eighth place from her good barrier (2). She travelled well and

Michelle Payne asked her to improve rounding the 700m bend. She

moved up strongly from the 600m very wide out, challenged at the

turn and then battled on for third, beaten length and half. Epingle

was sixth on the rails but was shuffled back to last nearing the

home turn. She was compensated by getting a split at the turn and

then battled on quite well for a sound fourth.

Analysis: Cryptic was allowed to settled back in the field from

barrier one. Making steady progress near the rail in the straight,

she was switched across heels at the 200m and overhauled the

two horses on her inner to win with some authority. Jackofall had

done a good job of leading only to be collared near the line and

likewise, third placed Don’t Change stuck to his task after racing

Analysis: Away smartly from barrier one, Viana led before steadying

to settle three places back on the inner and travelled on a nice

rein throughout. Off the rail at opportune time nearing the home

turn, she loomed effortlessly to lead on straightening and held her

advantage strongly to the line. Having tracked the winner, Alpine

Heights elected to stay nearer the rail where he experienced some

traffic problems before running home well for second. The Glitzy

One was clear in time out of midfield and stayed on well under

57kgs for third. Dickens, Monachee, and Whistling Straits were

next to cross the line in good fashion.

Analysis: Atlante made his intentions clear from the outset, when

as though he would be difficult to beat. He had his rivals off the

bit when straightening with a handy advantage at the 400m. Once

asked for his best at the 200m, he raced away to win easing down

by three lengths. Libetto was second in running and fought hard

to hold her place, ahead of Charlestown who sustained a circling

run from second last to finish third. King Savinsky had to change

ground when looking for room at the 300m and got home nicely

for fourth.

Analysis: South Australian-trained filly Silversands ($31)

benefitted from a nice rails trip, following a solid tempo, to score

a surprise win. She settled seventh on the rails from her good

barrier (3), improved nicely to fifth at the turn and then got a split

between runners nearing the 100m. She then drove through to

score by a neck. The Gai Waterhouse-trained filly Donelle ($4.20

fav) did very well on debut. She began smartly but was trapped

wide from her barrier (9), racing three wide outside the leaders.

She challenged strongly in the straight and fought back gamely for

a close second, putting up an impressive effort at her first start.

Cornrow began well and drove though from his good barrier (2) to

hold the lead. He then battled strongly, after working most of the

way to retain the lead, for a close third on debut. Boomwaa was

trapped four wide outside the leading trio after starting from the

outside barrier (14) and held on particularly well after his torrid

trip for a good fourth.
