One of the key backers of
Australia’s most successful colts
syndicates expects agent James
Harron and the China Horse
Club-Newgate operation to make the most of
a potentially depressed Inglis Australian Easter
Yearling Sale market this week.
Gary Diamond, still on a high after the ATC
Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) victory of
the Harron-purchased King’s Legacy (Redoute’s
Choice), yesterday said the economic uncertainty
caused by the coronavirus pandemic meant that
“no one really knows what’s going to happen until
the hammer starts to drop”.
But he predicted businesses and
individuals already heavily invested in the
thoroughbred industry would attempt to
make the most of a likely narrow buying bench
at the two-day virtual Easter auction which
starts tomorrow. Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Waller consideringQueen Elizabeth teamTancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Verry
Elleegant (Zed) is locked in for a Queen Elizabeth
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) tilt for Chris Waller, but the
champion trainer will wait to assess his Doncaster
Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) runners before committing
his team for the flagship race of the second day
of The Championships. Waller is considering
backing up Doncaster fifth Kings Will Dream
(Casamento), seventh Kolding (Ocean Park) and
14th Shared Ambition (Born To Sea), while he
may also run Group 2 winner Life Less Ordinary
(Thewayyouare) as well. "With there being no
Hollindale Stakes or Doomben Cup I will be
considering running more horses than normal,"
Waller said. "In the mix we’ll have possibly
Kolding, possibly Shared Ambition but unlikely,
Life Less Ordinary didn't run on Saturday but will
probably be there.” Morning Briefing page 6 >>

“People like James (Harron) will still
be buying and Henry (Field) will still be buying, so I just think potentially,
if you’ve got a budget, you could end up with more numbers than normal,”
Diamond told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.
“They haven’t stopped (because of coronavirus) and they might end
up with more numbers than normal.”
“The thing is, like all auctions, if you get a couple of people wanting the
same horse, they can still bring good money because a good horse is still a
good horse.”
Diamond’s G1G Racing and
Breeding syndicate, which is
managed by his daughter Tracy
Vogel, has shares in numerous
colts secured by Harron and the
Field-led China Horse Club-
Newgate Farm international
alliance including King’s Legacy
and the Newgate syndicate’s Aim
(Star Witness) who ran fifth in
the Inglis Sires at Randwick.
Diamond also previously
raced Golden Slipper winner
Capitalist (Written Tycoon)
and bought into dual Group 1 winner Russian
Revolution (Snitzel) when retiring to Newgate
Farm as well as a number of other young
stallions off the track.
While endorsing Harron and Field to go
and buy at Easter, as for how many colts G1G
Racing and Breeding ends up with this year, Diamond
was unsure.
“It is a better question to ask me after Easter because what we will do
is see what comes of Easter,” he said.
“Once it is over, we will sit back and look at what people have bought
from other (sales) and do it that way as we don’t always buy in (straight
away).
“We try and wait a bit longer and because horses this year might be
harder to sell, and there might be a few more quality ones floating around
that aren't fully sold, we might be able to get into them later on.”
Diamond also owns horses in partnership with Aquis Farm, including
Merchant Navy’s two-year-old brother Setanta (Fastnet Rock), but the
major Hong Kong-owned operation is likely to be on the sidelines from a
buying perspective at this week’s sale.
“We have been fairly aggressive in the market up to now and we’ve got
an awful lot of promising young horses coming through as well,” Aquis
Farm managing director Shane McGrath said.

“The reality is, we were serious
participants on the buying front last year but I think we’d be more of an
observer this time around, to be honest.”
McGrath has inspected a number of drafts in the Hunter Valley ahead
of tomorrow’s opening session, while Aquis Farm is also a vendor this
week,consigning nine yearlings.
“We have been around and getting the vibe and seeing what’s
happening and there’s no doubt there’s going to be opportunity, that’s one
thing for sure,” McGrath said.
“Everybody is interested to see who is right in terms of the speculation
of what effect it has on our market. We’ll be a lot wiser after the sale.
“Inglis has got a job to do and
that’s to put a sale on and they’ve
been supported by their vendors,
so I am wishing everyone the
best of luck in what will be a very,
very volatile market.”
In 2019, Aquis Farm was the
leading buyer at the Easter sale,
purchasing 13 yearlings for a
combined spend of $8.375 million.
Orbis Bloodstock signed for
eight lots, including Saturday’s
Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Doubtland (Not A Single
Doubt), for a total of $7.4 million but they too are likely to scale back their
investment at the 2020 sale due to the economic downturn.
While Aquis and Orbis Bloodstock are unlikely to feature on the
buyers’ sheet, McGrath still expects competition for the yearlings deemed
to be of elite quality despite the uncertainty around business and financial
markets caused by the pandemic.
“I would imagine your bluechip colts and the high-end fillies (will sell
well) as they’ve got a value in any market and you’re going to have people
who (are willing to pay),” he said.
“It’s been good times in the industry for the last ten or 15 years, so
for those that are in the medium-term game, I am sure there’s plenty of
opportunity for them.”
McGrath added: “We sold the majority of our stock at the weanling
sales last year, so we’re not in a vulnerable position by any stretch and
we have some lovely stock there at Easter and we will offer them for
sale.
“But at the end of the day, if we don’t make what we perceive to be fair
value, then we are more than happy to race them, too, because we’ve got
stallions to support now in the Pieratas and the Farnans, etc, and we’ve got
some beautiful fillies there.
“There are some I Am Invincibles and a Medaglia d’Oro filly who
won’t look out of place in any stable next year.”

Rawiller confirmed to ride ElleegantWith Verry Elleegant’s regular rider James
McDonald already booked to partner Japanese
raider Danon Premium (Deep Impact), Chris
Waller has moved to book Nash Rawiller for the
ride in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. "With James
McDonald riding the Japanese horse, Nash
Rawiller will ride Verry Elleegant and our other
riders will be sorted out on Monday,” he said.
Waller will also have two runners in the ATC
Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) as he aims to
back up Verry Elleegant’s win last year. Vinery
Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) third Nudge (Fastnet
Rock) and Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m)
runner-up Toffee Tongue (Tavistock) will form
his Oaks brigade.
Te Akau to be two-handed in Queen ElizabethChampion mare Melody Belle (Commands)
will back up in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr
1, 2000m), where she will tackle her popular
stablemate Te Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle),
after her gallant fourth in the Doncaster Mile
(Gr 1, 1600m) on Saturday. Kerrin McEvoy will
take his first ride on Melody Belle, with her
regular rider Opie Bosson already locked in for
Te Akau Shark. "We didn't get any luck, but she
loomed on the turn and she looked like a strong
winning chance with 300
metres to go," Fortuna
Syndicate manager
John Galvin said.
"The lighter
weighted horses
just ran past her
in the last little bit.
The Queen Elizabeth was her primary goal and
we needed to find a race between the All-Star
Mile and the Queen Elizabeth. She did her best
under the weight and if she backs up next week
in the Queen Elizabeth, which is our plan, she
will be back to weight-for-age and up to 2000
metres."
Sargent weighs up options with BrandenburgTrainer John Sargent is considering options for
his very promising three-year-old Brandenburg
(Burgundy) in the wake of his close third in
Saturday's Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at
Randwick. In the hands of Glen Boss, the colt was
just edged out in a three-way struggle behind
surprise winner Nettoyer (Sebring). A possible
tilt at the All-Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) may
well be one of the options under consideration.
“With the situation with Covid-19 you have to
take things on a day-to-day basis, but as long as
he is in good shape, the All-Aged looks a nice
fit for him,” said Sargent. He added: “The other
option is to put him aside now and bring him
back next season when he should be bigger and
stronger with the natural improvement he will
take from a break.” Sargent was also reported to
be delighted with the performance of Stick 'Em
Up (Dundeel) in the Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3,
2000m). A closer in fifth place, she looks likely
to take her chance in next Saturday's Australian
Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), along with stablemate
Aspect Ratio (Declaration Of War).
Williams’ paddock buy Zebrowski paying offThe gloom of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown
affecting Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge was
lifted on Saturday evening at Randwick, as
improving three-year-old Zebrowski (Savabeel)
narrowly failed in a rousing finish to the ATC
Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). Bred by the
stud and trained by Michael, Wayne and John
Hawkes, he went under by a neck to Quick
Thinker (So You Think) at just his sixth career
start to intense interest from the Windsor
Park team. “The voice is a little hoarse this
morning as we were cheering pretty hard all
the way up the straight,” said stud master and
Zebrowski's co-owner Rodney Schick. The
horse was originally bought from Windsor Park
as a foal by bloodstock agent Andy Williams.
Schick reflected: “We decided to retain 20 per
cent of him as he had a stallion's pedigree
but unfortunately we had to geld him, but we
are having plenty of fun with him. I think next
season he could be a very handy horse.”
Snowden flags Redzel’s retirementDual Everest (1200m)-winning sprinter Redzel
(Snitzel) may have run his last race with co-
trainer Peter Snowden signalling retirement
is looming. Redzel ran third in Saturday's TJ
Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) won in brilliant
fashion by Nature Strip (Nicconi) from last
year's winner Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega).
Snowden said he believed it was one of the
gelding's finest performances and would be a
fitting way to end his career with the Brisbane
winter carnival cancelled because of the
coronavirus pandemic. "He has been so good
to everyone," Snowden told Sky Sports Radio. "I
had goosebumps yesterday. I was so proud of
his effort. He was outclassed. He is getting on
in years. He is seven going on eight and he just
wasn't what he was two years ago. "But I rate
that one of his greatest performances. Brisbane
was going to be his swan song but that's out
now.”

Pierata heading to All AgedPierata (Pierro), who will spearhead Aquis
Farm’s Hunter Valley stallion roster later
this year, has “pulled up super” after his
fourth-placed effort in the T J Smith Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday. “I spoke to
Tommy Berry on Saturday night and Greg
Hickman (yesterday) and he’s pulled up
super. He had a little blow, so I think he will
be cherry ripe for the All Aged in a couple
of weeks,” Aquis Farm managing director
Shane McGrath said. “He hasn’t had any
luck with the gates so far, so hopefully gets
his chance. I thought he was brilliant first-
up and he was the first colt home (in the T
J Smith).”
Prague spelled after Group 1 placingFellow Aquis Farm-owned colt Prague
(Redoute’s Choice) is already on his way to
Canungra for a well-earned spell after his
second in the Inglis Sires (Gr 1, 1400m) at
Randwick on Saturday. A $1.6 million Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate,
Prague won three of his six starts including
the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and the
Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). “He’s done
his job. That was one his sixth run now and
he has only had one blemish (in the Skyline
Stakes),” Aquis Farm’s Shane McGrath said.
“He is a colt to dream about over the winter and
hopefully he’s back for those spring races. He’s
on his way home (to the farm for a spell) and
we’ll have Holyfield flying the flag for us in the
Champagne.” Holyfield (I Am Invincible) won
the Baillieu Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at his most
recent start.
Spiritual Warrior wins Pinjarra CupConsistent five-year-old Spiritual Warrior
(5 g Blackfriars - Angelic Heart by Show
A Heart) scored his fourth Listed win at
2200m since October when taking the
Pinjarra Cup (Listed, 2200m) yesterday.
The Pinjarra Cup joined the Kalgoorlie Cup
(Listed, 2200m), the ATA Stakes (Listed,
2200m) and the South West Autumn Cup
(Listed, 2200m) as trophies won by the
Justin Warwick-trained Spiritual Warrior
this season. Spiritual Warrior, ridden by
Lucy Warwick, defeated Superior Smile
(Patronize) by three-quarters of a length,
with He’s A Parker (He’s A Decoy) a further
half-length away in third.
Inverloch likely to back upAfter being beaten as favourite at Caulfield on
Saturday, Mornington Cup runner-up Inverloch
(Fastnet Rock) is likely to back up in the Easter
Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) this weekend. Inverloch
finished second to Miramar (Kalanisi) over
2400m on Saturday after trying to lead all the
way under apprentice Thomas Stockdale. "He
just weakened in the end giving 4.5kg to the
winner," Natalie Young, who trains Inverloch
in partnership with Trent Busuttin, told Racing.
com. "It was a tough run down the back with the
headwind, very taxing."
Zeftabrook wins Wellington BootAustralian Bloodstock added country NSW’s
most prestigious juvenile race, the Wellington
Boot (1200m), to their haul of big wins yesterday
when Zeftabrook (Hinchinbrook) took the
$200,000 feature under Chad Lever. The Kris
Lees-trained Zeftabrook, who was purchased
for $190,000 from the Yarraman Park draft at
last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale, won by a half-length over Girls Kick On
(Scissor Kick), with another half-length back to
Lady Of Luxury (Criterion) in third. They were
more than six lengths clear of the rest of the
field.
NSW cuts more prize-moneyPrize-money for TAB races throughout NSW
will be cut by up to 20 per cent until the
end of the financial year in June because of
the coronavirus pandemic. While racing is
continuing under strict biosecurity protocols,
meetings are being held without spectators,
reducing the income from wagering,
hospitality and sponsorship. Pubs, clubs and
TAB agencies are also closed. Racing NSW
announced on Sunday that the prize-money
cuts would not cover all losses. From Sunday,
races of $100,000 and above will be reduced
by 20 per cent, races between $25,000 and
$100,000 will be reduced by 10 per cent and
minimum prize-money for country TAB
race meetings will be reduced by $2,000 to
$20,000. There will be no reductions for non-
TAB and picnic races.
Call for Queensland winter carnival to be reinstatedPressure is mounting on Racing Queensland to
reverse its decision to scrap the winter carnival
which was due to start later this month. The
Brisbane Racing Club, breeders, and some
trainers and owners are pushing for a scaled
down carnival to be run in June and July after
RQ cancelled all stakes racing because of
uncertainty amid the coronavirus crisis. "Every
other state has gone ahead with their carnivals.
South Australia had four black-type races on
Saturday," BRC chairman Neville Bell said.
"We accept prize-money cuts on the races are
inevitable but for breeders, trainers and owners
we should be running our main races. And
Listed races are vital for breeders and owners."
Queensland breeders president Basil Nolan
agreed and sent an email to all members to
"rally" in a tough time. "The decision to scrap
the carnival will impact on yearling sales
catalogues for years if this continues" he said.
Kendrick supports winter carnival pushAfter Eric The Eel’s (Olympic Glory) courageous
third in Saturday’s ATC Australian Derby (Gr
1, 2400m), trainer Stuart Kendrick is hoping
that the decision to scrap the Brisbane winter
carnival can be overturned so that his charge
can tackle the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).
Kendrick watched the Derby from his Sunshine
Coast property because of coronavirus travel
restrictions, with Sydney trainer Bjorn Baker
saddling up both Eric The Eel and winner Quick
Thinker (So You Think), trained by Baker’s
father Murray in partnership with Andrew
Forsman. "We gave Eric The Eel a huge cheer at
home. He did us proud," Kendrick said. "I know
it is easy to make statements after races and we
were beaten fair and square. But I still would
love to see Eric The Eel in a 2400 metre race on
top of the ground. I spoke with Bjorn on Sunday
morning and he said there isn't much for the
Derby horses in Sydney, so we will just have to
see what develops up here."

Wilde has headache over Warrnambool targetThe consolidation of the Warrnambool May
Carnival from three days into two due to the
coronavirus pandemic has given local trainer
Symon Wilde a dilemma with his admirable
jumper Gold Medals (Elvstroem). In past years,
Gold Medals has raced on both the Tuesday and
the Thursday, tackling the Brierly Steeplechase
(3450m) on day one and the Grand Annual
Steeplechase (5500m) on day three. However,
with the Brierly and the Grand Annual set to
be on the same day this year, Wilde is not sure
which race to tackle. "It's worked for us really
well in the last couple of years so it's a shame
they're both on the same day," Wilde said.
"They're the only races that we really set him for,
along with the Australian Steeple at Sandown.
They're his three jumps runs for the year so
it has thrown a spanner in the works. We'll
have to aim at one or the other, then go to the
Australian and maybe then try and extend his
campaign for one more run."

26 for Declaration Of War
A stellar season for Declaration Of War (War
Front) continued yesterday when he recorded
his 26th individual stakes winner after Voyage
Warrior (4 g ex Chaleur by Stravinsky) scored
an upset win in the Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m)
at Sha Tin. Declaration Of War has already had
a Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner in Vow
And Declare, Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)
winner in Warning and a Summer Stakes (Gr
1, 8f) victor in Decorated Invader since the
start of the southern hemisphere season and
Voyage Warrior joined the ranks of his stakes
winners with yesterday’s Sprint Cup score.
The Ricky Yiu-trained Voyage Warrior found
himself in front under Vincent Ho when hot
favourite Aethero (Sebring) missed the start
and he recorded a gutsy all-the-way victory.
Hot King Prawn (Denman) finished second,
three-quarters of a length from the winner,
while Thanks Forever (Duporth) was a further
half-length away in third.
Logan preparing for lockdownSingapore-based Kiwi trainer Donna Logan
has been left in a state of limbo, along with
her fellow trainers, after new regulations
enacted by the Singapore government means
that racing in the territory has been cancelled
until at least May 4 due to the Covid-19
pandemic. “We were ticking along quite well
but there have been a couple of outbreaks
which have closed schools which meant
things have come to a bit of a standstill,” she
said. One of her first priorities is to apply to
become an essential service, to enable critical
access to her Kranji stable and to tend to the
horses in her care. She said: “We will apply
to the government and we have to hope they
don't restrict the staff numbers too much,
as all of our horses are boxed and you can't
leave them in a box for a month. We have
sixty boxes to muck out and you can't do that
with one person.” The restrictions which had
previously reduced racing to one day a week
from two had put a halt on a promising season
for the stable, but she added: “We have some
nice young stock so we will kick back once we
are back in the full swing of things.”
Lucky Lilac wins Osaka HaiBonny Japanese mare Lucky Lilac (5 m
Orfevre - Lilacs And Lace by Flower Alley)
made it three Group 1 wins in the Osaka Hai
(Gr 1, 2000m) at Hanshin yesterday. The
Mikio Matsunaga-trained Lucky Lilac won
the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1, 1600m) as
a two-year-old, while she added the Queen
Elizabeth II Cup (Gr 1, 2200m) at Kyoto late
last year. Yesterday, she was given a peach
of a ride by Mirco Demuro, who brought her
through to beat Chrono Genesis (Bago) by
a neck, with a further neck back to Danon
Kingly (Deep Impact) in third.

Sheikh Fahad puts UK property on marketSheikh Fahad Al Thani, owner of 2011 Melbourne
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Dunaden (Nicobar)
and 2017 champion first-season sire Zoustar
(Northern Meteor), has put his Longholes Stud
in Newmarket for sale as he plans to spend more
time in California with his American wife Sheikha
Melissa. Purchased in 2013, the 217-acre property
has been turned into a state of the art equestrian
centre for spelling, rehabilitation and pre-training
for racehorses and sport horses. Amongst the
facilities are 88 stables and a six-furlong woodchip
gallop, and is quoted for offers of over £6 million
(approximately AUD$12.3 million). “Longholes
boasts an incredible array of modern facilities,
an outstanding team of committed and highly
trained professional staff and a client list that
boasts many of the most recognised names in
horse racing, eventing and show jumping,” said
the Sheikh's racing and bloodstock adviser, David
Redvers. Sheikh Fahad's Qatar Racing recently
purchased a $1.2m (approximately AUD$2m)
colt by Medaglia D'Oro (El Prado) and a $1.05m
(AUD$1.75m) colt by the late Pioneerof The Nile
(Empire Maker) at the Keeneland September

California by Simon Callaghan.
Potters Corner wins virtual Grand NationalThe world’s most famous steeplechase, the
Grand National at Aintree, did not proceed over
the weekend due to the coronavirus pandemic,
but a virtual simulation of the Grand National
shown on British television had Potters Corner
(Indian Danehill) emerge as the winner. The CGI
representation of the Grand National had been
applied to previous runnings and had proven to be
remarkably accurate, so while it won’t officially join
his record alongside his wins in the Welsh Grand
National and the Midlands Grand National, Potters
Corner will be remembered as the computer’s
winner of the 2020 Grand National. Potters Corner
defeated Walk In The Mill (Walk In The Park) and
Any Second Now (Oscar), with two-time victor Tiger
Roll (Authorized) fourth at his third “attempt”. All
proceeds from the simulation were donated to the

Beauty Generation (Road To
Rock) brushed aside the younger
challenger and shrugged off
old rivals to win the Chairman’s
Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) at Sha Tin yesterday,
setting up the prospect of an unprecedented
third victory in the G1 FWD Champions Mile
(Gr 1, 1600m) at the end of the month.
The New Zealand-bred gelding’s success
was his 18th as a Hong Kong-based galloper,
matching the career tally of the great Silent
Witness (El Moxie), and pushed his own
record prize money haul past HK$100 million
(AUD$21.5 million).
“He’s done that nicely leading into the
Champions Mile. He’s 100 per cent right now,
so I’ve just got to carry that through the next
three weeks,” trainer John Moore said.
“It was a very nice win, the tempo was
absolutely perfect and everything went to plan.
My fellow wasn’t hit, it was hands and heels,
so it’s a good sign for the Champions Mile –
everything is positive.”
The mile feature was billed as a match
between Beauty Generation and the circuit’s
rising mile star, Waikuku (Harbour Watch),
with the latter having defeated the former the
last four times they had met.
But Waikuku failed to show anything like
the dash that sealed the G1 Stewards’ Cup
(1600m) in January. While Beauty Generation
relished a pace-shadowing run on the rain-
softened turf, his John Size-trained rival looked
less than comfortable and found nothing when
pressure was applied.
“He’s got soft track form,” Moore said of the
winner. “The feet on him, big feet, and I think
for an older guy like that, just that little bit of
cushion does him a world of good – he loved it.”
Chad Schofield kicked Ka Ying Star
(Cityscape) to a two-length lead approaching
the home straight but Zac Purton remained
patient on Beauty Generation. The Australian
allowed the two-time Hong Kong Horse of the
Year to reel in the leader without urging and
when the arms began to pump at the 250m
point, the powerful bay responded.
The seven-year-old rallied to the fight when
Southern Legend (Not A Single Doubt) edged into
view on his outer and imposed his well-earned
authority through the final 100m, with Purton
relaxing his biceps for the final two strides.
“One thing I like – when Zac got off he said
when they came on him, he showed some of
his old fighting heart; he said he just knuckled
down, he kicked and if the old boy is feeling in
that sort of mood coming to the Champions
Mile he has to be right there,” Moore said.
“He couldn’t have blown a match out,
there’s no improvement in him, we have him as
fit as we can get him.”
Purton was delighted with the horse he has
now paired with for 15 of 18 wins, including seven
of his eight at the highest level. This 18th victory
equalled Silent Witness’s career win haul, as well
as the total wins achieved by the prolific 1970s
galloper Super Win (Piccadilly Lane).
“I suppose the most pleasing part was at the
200-metre mark when they challenged him and
he fought them off. He’s got a little bit of spark
about him again,” the three-time champion
jockey said.
“The way Ka Ying Star set a sensible pace
was a big difference this time – he was rated
well, didn’t go along too fast. But he upped the
tempo about 700 metres for home and I didn't
want to chase him at that point, I just wanted to
keep my horse on the bit and let him build his
confidence – he was able to do that.”
Purton was just a hint less coy than usual
about whether or not the win had increased his
confidence that Beauty Generation will confirm
the victory in the Champions Mile.
“Ah, a little bit,” he said, before going on to
complete a treble on the day.
Ka Ying Star held on for second with
Southern Legend third – both half a length back
– the winning time was 1m 33.49s.
Waikuku, having his first start since January,
passed the post sixth of seven, four and three-
quarter lengths behind the winner.
“I think he probably felt the long space
between runs because he put on a bit of
condition. He wasn’t able to finish off the race,
he was weakening,” jockey Joao Moreira said.

Beauty Generation bosses Chairman’s Trophy, Voyage Warrior causes Sprint Cup upset
Beauty Generation HKJC
| 11 |
Beauty Generation, Hong Kong’s joint-
highest rated horse in history, extended his
all-time prize money record to HK$100,422,500
(approximately AUD$21.59 million).
“That’s a target to set!” Moore said. “The
prize-money will have to go up for a horse
ever to do that! My own target for him was 120
million but it needed a win in Dubai to get
there.”
The FWD Champions Mile on April 26
carries a purse of HK$20 million with HK$11.4
million to the winner. With the ongoing
coronavirus situation making the participation
of overseas horses unlikely, Beauty Generation
stands a good chance of pulling off the hat-
trick – but he might have to see off another
rising star, the brilliant BMW Hong Kong Derby
winner Golden Sixty (Medaglia d’Oro).
“I’m worried!” Moore admitted. “Golden
Sixty is an exceptional racehorse on the up. He’s
got age on his side, he hits the line seriously
strongly, so it’s making for a great race and
that’s what the world wants to see. He’s the new
boy on the block and now he’s got to do it but I
have to say, he puts a bit of fright into the team.”
Golden Sixty’s trainer Francis Lui is
expected to make a decision in the next week
about his exciting charge’s Champions Day
participation.
Voyage Warrior runs away with the Sprint Cup
Voyage Warrior (Declaration Of War) went
a long way to fulfilling his prodigious potential
with a make-all win in the second of the features,
the Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) yesterday.
The 23/1 shot relished the rain-affected
turf and dominated his seven rivals under an
inspired Vincent Ho. But 10 lengths adrift of
victory’s heady rush, the 1.8 favourite Aethero
(Sebring) trailed in last after he over-raced and
then suffered a rough passage on the home
turn.
Voyage Warrior was never headed and
sprinted down the straight to finish three-
quarters of a length in front of runner-up Hot
King Prawn (Denman) in a time of 1:09.48.
“It wasn’t the plan to lead but my horse
pinged the gate and everyone else was holding,
they didn't want to lead, so I just gave him a soft
lead and he ran home strongly,” Ho said.
“He enjoyed that ground a lot and he was
so relaxed in front. Ricky’s horses are doing very
well, the young ones too.”
Trainer Ricky Yiu – one win clear at the
head of the trainers’ premiership – piled praise
on the rider, who is fresh off completing a
clean-sweep of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series
aboard BMW Hong Kong Derby hero Golden
Sixty.
“He’s a good jockey!” Yiu enthused as Ho
and Voyage Warrior returned to unsaddle.
“When you have a good jockey, you don't tie
them down to instructions – they always have
Plan A, Plan B, even Plan C, depending on how
the horse jumps, he knows if the horse is racing
too strong or whatever – the good jockey uses
his own judgement.”
Voyage Warrior burst onto the scene last
term with three wins from four starts, achieved
in blistering fashion, but this term he had mixed
his form with one win from five prior to today’s
first tilt at Group company.
“He’s maturing and that has meant he’s had
some ups and downs, he’s had bad patches, but
he’s improving and each time he’s gone over
1200 metres he’s run better,” Yiu said.
The four-year-old has spent time in the
relative tranquility of the Hong Kong Jockey
Club’s Conghua facility and the handler
credited that experience as being a key factor
in the gelding achieving his first high-class win.
“He’s been to Conghua – he’s been there
about three to four weeks and he’s much more
relaxed now, he’s not pulling like he was.”
Yiu expects to pitch his emerging talent
into the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m)
at FWD Champions Day on April 26, when he is
likely to lock horns again with Hot King Prawn
and Aethero.
“We’ll keep him over 1200 (metres),” he
said. “He’ll be against the same horses in the
Group 1 next time. He’s going to go up a lot in
the ratings but it doesn't matter now, he’s in the
Group races.”
After the high of Beauty Generation’s earlier
G2 Chairman’s Trophy win, John Moore had to
endure the frustration of seeing everything go
wrong for his prized sprinter Aethero.
The three-year-old was having his first
start since a fine third in the LONGINES Hong
Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) back in December.
And, just as when beaten in Class 2 first-up this
term, the chestnut fought for his head when Zac
Purton attempted to settle him behind heels.
It didn't help that Aethero found stablemate
and eventual third Thanks Forever (Duporth)
blocking his progress on the turn for home but
his chance was already blown by then.
“He missed the start and once he missed the
start he got chopped out and that was the end of
it. That’s the way we know things will go if he gets
back in the field, he won't relax. I just hope he
doesn't do it in the Group 1,” Moore said.
“Thanks Forever ran to expectations, he
enjoyed the ground.”
Joao Moreira appeared deflated in defeat
but was pleased with Hot King Prawn’s effort in
running second.
“He’s honest, he tries his best and he is
a good horse,” the Brazilian said. “I think the
winner had everything go his way – my horse
just ended up being in a spot that meant he
didn't have a perfect race, particularly in the
straight, when I was trying to come on his
outside I had to switch back in. I wouldn't say
it cost me the race but I would say it cost me
ground. I’m happy with his effort and we know
what is there for him in the future.”

Analysis: The top weight Spiritual Warrior staged a good effort in
winning here, his fourth stakes success. He settled nicely in fourth place,
one out and one back, before moving up comfortably nearing the home
turn. He challenged at the 200m and then proved too good in scoring
well. It was also a good ride by Lucy Warwick. Superior Smile raced in
second place, moved up to the leader (Juicing Carrot) at the 600m, got
to the front on straightening and then fought gamely for second, just
finding the winner, that conceded him 5kg, too good. He’s A Parker
raced midfield, between runners, got into clear running coming to the
turn and then kept battling on well to take the minor placing. [KB]
