The John Moore-trained Australian-bred Rapper Dragon (Street Boss) was too good for his rivals when the four-year-old gelding ran out

an impressive winner of the Hong Kong Classic

Mile (HK Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin yesterday. Rapper Dragon ($3) was away from barrier

eight quickly and was settled in midfield by Joao Moreira for the early part of the race, with Circuit Hassler (Shocking) and Winner’s Way

(Starcraft) setting good early fractions. As the field approached the turn into the

home straight, Moreria saw a gap between horses and when he asked the gelding for an effort he responded in taking fashion, eventually pulling away to beat the Danny Shum-trained Seasons Bloom (Captain Sonador) by a decisive two lengths with the Rapper Dragon’s stablemate Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) another quarter of a length back in third.

“He seems like something special,” said Moreira.

“I was always comfortable, all the way through the race,” the champion jockey continued. “When John asked me to ride him forward and race in the top five I was a bit surprised, but the way he jumps out he was always going to put himself where he was.”

Rapper Dragon will now head to the Hong Kong Classic Cup (HK Gr 1, 1800m) next month before a tilt at the Hong Kong Derby (HK Gr 1, 2000m) in March.

that he would step up to 1800 metres and perform at his top level, and I also believe he will make it over 2000 metres,” Moreira said.

The winning time was 1:34.98 with Rapper Dragon’s final 400 metres clocked at 22.03 seconds.

“This is a great horse for the stable and a great win for Hong Kong,” said Moore.

“The way he ran today you'd have to say he’s 100 percent fit so the idea now is to keep him at this level for the next two races, culminating in the Hong Kong Derby.

“I’d been telling the press all week that this is the cleanest-winded horse I’ve had in the stable for donkey’s years and from that point of view he’s very easy to get fit. His trial was very good and his work coming into the race today was very good. I was tipping him on top and he’s come out and won by two lengths, which did surprise me a little bit because I didn’t think he’d win that easily!”

Group One-placed when in training with Gai Waterhouse in Australia where he raced as Street Rapper, Rapper Dragon (5 g Street Boss - Swing Dance by Danehill Dancer) has now won six of his 14 career starts for a total prize money of $2,223,650.

Since being imported to Hong Kong in 2015, the gelding has now won five times, the most high profile of those, until yesterday was when he took out the Lion Rock Trophy (HK Gr 3, 1600m) in May 2016.

He resumed this preparation by finishing fifth behind subsequent Group Three winner Blizzard (Starcraft) in the Flying Dancer Handicap

(Class One) (1400m) at Sha Tin on 11 December. Bred by Eduardo Cojuangco, Rapper Dragon is the third foal out of

the unraced Danehill Dancer (Danehill) mare Swing Dance, whose three named foals have all been winners, making the gelding a half-brother of the Listed-placed mare Swing Vote (Northern Meteor).

Swing Dance is a sister to the Listed winner Turf Express, while she is also half-sister to Group One winner Amanpour (Northern Meteor) and the Listed winner Sports Edition (Northern Meteor).

Further back in his pedigree his fourth dam is a half-sister to the Group Two placed Arrowtown (Mr Prospector), while his fifth dam was the Listed-winning mare Born A Lady (Tentam), who was a half-sister to the multiple Group One winner and prolific sire Northern Dancer (Nearctic).

In 2013 Swing Dance slipped to Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago) before producing a filly foal by Your Song (Fastnet Rock) in 2014, a colt by Congrats (A P Indy) in 2015 and most recently a colt by Deep Field (Northern Meteor) last year.

She was covered again by Darley’s Street Boss (Street Cry) on 26 October last year.

Street Boss, who stands at Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky and shuttles to Northwood Park in Victoria, has sired 26 stakes winners to date.

Third For So You ThinkNorthwest Passage (3 g ex Danevade by Danehill) was a dominant winner of yesterday’s Hobart Guineas (Listed, 2100m) and became the third individual stakes winner for his Coolmore Stud-based sire So You Think (High Chaparral). Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the Adam Hyeronimus ridden three-year-old raced behind the speed before easing to the firmer ground on the outside fence in the straight to win by seven and a half lengths. Northwest Passage has now won three of his four starts, while So You Think, whose progeny are headed by the Group One winner La Diosa, is third on the Australian second season sires table by earnings. So You Think covered 187 mares in 2016 at a fee of $49,500 (inc GST).

Nozomi Takes Great Western Cup The Godolphin-raced Nozomi (Street Cry) led all the way to land the Great Western Cup (1850m) in impressive fashion yesterday for co-trainers Lee and Anthony Freedman. The five-year-old gelding, who took out the Geelong Classic (Listed, 2200m) in October 2014, before running third in the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), beat Something To Share (Country Reel) by a length and three quarters with another three quarters of a length back to Vianden (Von Costa De Hero) in third. This win brought up a double on the day for apprentice Liam Riordan, who also won the first race of the day aboard the Aaron Purcell-trained Stella Effort (Reward For Effort).

Godolphin To Have Two In Australia StakesTrainer John O’Shea is expected to have two runners in Friday night’s Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Moonee Valley headed by lightly raced four-year-old Chetwood (Exceed And Excel). The winner of the Cameron Handicap

(Gr 3, 1350m), who will be ridden by James Doyle, won a barrier trial over 1050 metres by one and a half lengths at Randwick on 5 January, his second trial this preparation. A winner of five of his seven starts, Chetwood will be joined in the race by Listed-winning three-year-old stablemate Peacock (Lonhro) who is due to be partnered by Craig Williams.

Malaguerra Also Set For Australia StakesDarley Classic (registered as VRC Sprint) (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Malaguerra (Magnus) will also be nominated for the Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday for trainer Peter Gelagotis. A dual Group One winner, Malaguerra joined the Moe-based Gelagotis stable at the start of his three-start spring preparation that included his second Group One victory at Flemington on 5 November. The five-year-old gelding, who could be aimed at the C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), last raced on 26 November when fifth in the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ascot. Stablemate Mourinho (Oratorio (IRE)) could also run first up in the Australia Stakes.

Weir To Have Trio In Group TwoLeading trainer Darren Weir will have three runners in the Australia Stakes, with Group One winners Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars), Palentino (Teofilo) and Flamberge (Exceed And Excel), set to run in the $200,000 race first up. "They're great. (Black Heart Bart and Palentino) both trialled on Tuesday at Camperdown and went terrific," Weir said. "Black Heart Bart and Palentino will go to the Orr and the Futurity and then we'll work it out from there."

John Dillon Stakes For Real LoveJRA Cup (Gr 3, 2040m) winner Real Love (Desert King) will be joined by her Darren Weir-trained stablemate Humidor (Teofilo) in Thursday’s John

Morning Brief

Dillon Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Caulfield. Six-year-old Real Love has not raced since finishing sixth in the Lexus Stakes (registered as Hotham Handicap) (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington on 29 October, while four-year-old Group One placed New Zealander Humidor will make his debut for Weir in the same race this week. "He's a new horse to us. He's just a good galloper," Weir said. "He and Real Love are on an Australian Cup path, and Tosen Stardom will join in a fortnight later in the Carylon Cup at Caulfield." Astern To Trial Today At Warwick FarmWarwick Farm will today host an exceptional set of barrier trials headed by heat one which features the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Astern (Medaglia d’Oro) and the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Divine Prophet (Choisir). The 1000 metre barrier trial also features Astern’s stablemates Impending (Lonhro), Ambience (Street Cry) and Magic Hurricane (Hurricane Run). Trainer Chris Waller also has four entries, including Antonio Giuseppe (Shocking), Counterattack (Redoute’s Choice) and Sezanne (More Than Ready).

Omei Sword Continues PreparationTrainer Chris Waller will have as many as five runners in heat two over 1000 metres at Warwick Farm today, but talented three-year-old Omei Sword (High Chaparral) will not be one of them. Omei Sword won the Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) last preparation before finishing second to Astern in the Golden Rose Stakes and was set to barrier trial today, but instead she will be reserved for a barrier trial at Randwick on Friday. "She won't run at Warwick Farm but will trial at the end of the week instead," Waller said. "We've still got a bit of time up our sleeve so she will go to Randwick. Her Group One target is the Coolmore Classic which she will go to third-up after the Light Fingers Stakes over 1200 metres and then the Surround over 1400 metres."

Preferment To TrialTrainer Chris Waller has Group One winner Preferment (Zabeel), Libran (Lawman), Nikitas (Snitzel), Shillelagh (Savabeel) and Veladero (Medaglia d’Oro) in heat two at today’s Warwick Farm barrier trials over 1000 metres. The Rick Worthington-trained three-year-old Honesty Prevails (Redoute’s Choice), winner of the Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) as a juvenile, will also have her second barrier trial this preparation in the same heat after winning over 805 metres at Warwick Farm on 10 January.

Ghisoni Also Set To TrialSurround Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Ghisoni (Lonhro) will also step up her 2017 preparation with her second barrier trial at Warwick Farm today. The John O’Shea-trained four-year-old, who won the Glenlogan Park Stakes (registered as Moreton Stakes) (Gr 3, 1350m) last May, did not race during the spring but had a barrier trial at Rosehill on 30 December when given a quiet time by jockey James McDonald. Ghisoni is entered in heat two over 1000 metres where stablemates Alucinari (Street Cry), Bezel (Street Cry) are also entered. Click here to view the Warwick Farm barrier trial fields.

Dubai Still On Cards For The QuarterbackNewmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner The Quarterback (Street Boss) could still head to the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Meydan in Dubai in March, trainer Robbie Griffiths says. A winner of the Gilgai Stakes (registered as Baguette Stakes) (Gr 2, 1200m) last October, The Quarterback is back in work and due to have a jump out at the end of January. “It's the perfect race for him in Dubai," Griffiths said. "I think if we're brave enough to travel overseas, I would imagine Dubai is the right type of race because it's in a straight line, it will be a dry track and be similar weather pattern to Melbourne.”

I’m Belucci To Miss SummerBrisbane trainer Desleigh Forster has abandoned plans to give Group One-placed entire I’m Belucci (Captain Sonador) a summer preparation due to the heat. The four-year-old was placed in the 2015 Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and has not raced since

his third placing in the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Eagle Farm last June. "He has been placed in Group One company twice (Spring Champion Stakes and Queensland Derby) but funnily he is still a Class One horse," Forster said. "I was looking at winning a couple of races with him. He would have been very well placed in a Class Three Plate and that was where we planned to start him first."

Too Good To Refuse And Cylinder Beach Back In WorkTrainer Desleigh Forster may not have I’m Belucci for a summer preparation, but stablemates Too Good To Refuse (Rothesay) and Cylinder Beach (Showcasing) have returned to her Eagle Farm stables after a spell. Too Good To Refuse won the Keith Noud Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in November, while Cylinder Beach won the Recognition Stakes (Listed, 1400m) in the same month. "They did a great job in the summer each winning a stakes race and picking up plenty of prize money as- well as getting a boost in their ratings," Forster said. "The pair have had a nice break and have come back looking good. At this stage we will head to Sydney late in February with their first runs there probably around 4 March."

Group One Performer Teronado RetiredGold Coast trainer Bruce Hill has been forced to retire Group One-placed six-year-old gelding Teronado (Testa Rossa) after ongoing tendon issues. A winner of four of his 30 starts and $278,700 in prize money, Teronado finished fourth in the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and third in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) as a three-year-old. He last raced at Doomben on 8 October when unplaced. "I went to see him in his spelling paddock and gave him another month. Then I went back and had a good look at him. We decided it was time to retire him," Hill said.

Kyneton Cup Winner DiesThe Darren Weir-trained Taiyoo (Haradasun) has died after being injured during the running of the Summer Cup (2200m) at Hobart yesterday. The seven-year-old, who won the Kyneton Cup (2000m) last campaign, was

pulled up in the straight by jockey Brad Rawiller and could not be saved. Owned by Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock, Taiyoo won 14 of his 42 starts including the Torney Cup (Listed, 2500m) at Moonee Valley and the Lord Reims Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) at Morphettville, earning $685,885 in prize money during his career.

Lucrative Inglis Races Start This SaturdayInglis graduates will battle it out for $750,000 in prize money over the next three weeks as the $5,000,000 race series heats up for 2017. The $250,000 Inglis Dash (1100m) at Flemington on Saturday will start three consecutive weeks of big prize money on offer for horses signed up to the lucrative Inglis Race Series. It is followed by the $250,000 Inglis Premier (RL, 1200m) at Caulfield on 4 February – specifically for Race Series entrants sold at last year’s Melbourne Premier Sale – and the $250,000 Inglis Classic (RL, 1200m) at Randwick on 11 February, for horses sold at last year’s Classic sale. Nominations for Saturday’s Inglis Dash close at midday today.

Waller To Attend World’s Best Racehorse AwardsChris Waller, the trainer of dual Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) champion Winx (Street Cry), will attend Wednesday’s World’s Best Racehorse Awards in London for which his star mare is a nominee. Winx, who has now won 13 successive races, is due to start another campaign soon and finished third in a Rosehill barrier trial over 900 metres on 17 January. "Winning races is the first dream you have," Waller said. "The second dream is getting a good horse to train. Getting a horse a horse that was deemed a champion in Australia is another step up again. To get a horse that is rated the highest in the world is very special."

2014 and his first yearlings will be sold at the New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale at Karaka later this month. "We are quite devastated," Haunui Farm's managing director, Mark Chitty said. "We were privileged to have the opportunity to stand Ferlax on behalf of his owner, Jonathan Munz, and have worked closely with him and his bloodstock manager Dean Hawthorne to give Ferlax the best possible opportunity at stud.”

Honey Rider Returns To Winning FormGroup Three winner Honey Rider (Pins), a three-year-old filly trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, resumed with an impressive two and a half length victory over 1200 metres at Te Rapa yesterday. The three-year-old had not raced since finishing second last in the James & Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on 24 October. “We don’t have any real plans for her at present. She is a Group Three winner already so we will just look for some more black-type options for her,” Forsman said. “We’re still trying to figure out what the go is with her, whether we keep her fresh as a sprinter or whether we try to get her to go further.”

Jimmy Choux’s Half-Sister Wins At Trentham Four-year-old filly Miss Wilson (Stratum), a half-sister to stallion and former New Zealand Horse of the Year Jimmy Choux (Thorn Park), was successful at Trentham on Saturday. Trained by John Bary, who prepared Jimmy Choux to five Group One victories, Miss Wilson returned from an Australian stint to win first up over 1200 metres on Saturday. “It’s a good result as she’s a pretty good filly,” owner Richard Wood said. “The pressure’s off now and she will improve from that. She’s holding her condition and the weight on her which she couldn’t do in Australia.”

Travimyfriend To EllerslieTravimyfriend (Tavistock), a four-year-old gelding trained by Rachael Frost, is set to run at Ellerslie next start after making it three wins in succession at Trentham on Saturday. The lightly raced Travimyfriend was ridden to victory by Hayden Tinsley on Saturday over 1400 metres with Frost eyeing off a special conditions race for the horse. "He may to go to Ellerslie next

week for another special conditions event," Frost said. "He will only carry a kilo more with both a 1400 metre or a mile event as an option so we will just have to see what we do.” Parkes To Miss Volpe Veloce Ride Through SuspensionMichael Coleman will partner talented three-year-old filly Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge), who has won all six starts so far, in the Karaka 3YO Mile (RL, 1600m) at Ellerslie next weekend. Coleman replaces regular jockey Johnathan Parkes on the Graham Richardson-trained filly, after Parkes copped a suspension for careless riding aboard Start Wondering (Eighth Wonder) in the Telegraph Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Trentham on Saturday. Parkes has ridden Volpe Veloce to her past five victories after Craig Grylls rode her to win on debut at Matamata last March.

Vet Inspection For Odyssey MoonThe Robert Smerdon-trained four-year-old Odyssey Moon (Snitzel), who was unplaced in Saturday’s Telegraph Stakes at Trentham, has been diagnosed with an issue after the race. A veterinary inspection found the Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) winner to have a diaphragmatic flutter post race. Immediately after the race, rider Noel Callow was unable to offer any excuse for the entire’s disappointing performance.

22 For Zenno Rob Roy The Sakae Kunieda-trained Tanta Alegria (5 h ex Tanta Suerte by Stuka) ran out a ready winner of the American Jockey Club Cup (Gr 2, 2200m) at Nakayama yesterday and in the process provided his sire Zenno Rob Roy (Sunday Silence) with his 22nd stakes winner. The five-year-old entire, who was resuming having not been sighted since finishing fourth in the Tenno Sho (Gr 1, 3200m) at Kyoto in May last year, beat See Wind (Deep Impact) by half a length with Miraieno Tsubasa (Dream Journey) another one and quarter lengths further back in third. Zenno Rob Roy stands at the Breeders Stallion Station in Japan, where his stud fee in 2016 was private. Click here to view the race replay.

Second Stakes Victory For Glanzend The Yukihiro Kato-trained Glanzend (4 c Neo Universe - Bochinche by Kingmambo) secured the second stakes victory of his career when he won the Hai Tokai Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Chukyo yesterday. The four-year-old colt, who landed his first stakes race when he won the Niigata Leopard Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) in August 2016 and was most recently seen winning over 1800 metres at Nakayama on 24 December, beat Molto Bene (Deep Sky) by half a length with the same distance back to Meisho Utage (Precise End) in third. Calder & Davis Win Mixed Doubles ChallengeJockeys Jacqueline Davis and Andrew Calder won the Kampek Paradise International Mixed Double jockeys challenge yesterday after the New Zealand-based jockey Calder won the first two races of the three-leg series. The two wins saw the pair win 39 points, which was enough to secure victory in the challenge.

Heartbreak City Beaten On ReturnMelbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) runner-up, Heartbreak City (Lando) finished well beaten in the Coral.ie Handicap Hurdle (2m) at Leopardstown yesterday, his first appearance since his run in the Flemington feature on 1 November. The Tony Martin-trained seven-year-old, who was having his first run over obstacles since July 2015, was sent off the 9/4 favourite. After being settled in midfield by jockey Donagh Meyler, he tried to make a move approaching the final hurdle but did not find enough under pressure to make any impression on the winner and eventually finished eighth of 19 finishers.

Finest City Takes Santa Monica Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (Gr 1, 7f) Finest City (5 m City Zip - Be Envied by Lemon Drop Kid) returned in 2017 with a victory in Saturday’s Santa Monica Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Santa Anita on Saturday. The Ian Kruljac-

The Neil Howard-trained three-year-old broke his maiden in October last year and was last seen finishing second in the Street Sense Stakes (Listed, 8f) at Churchill Downs. He beat Untrapped (Trappe Shot) by one and a quarter lengths with another half a length back to Take Off (Fly So Free) in third. California Chrome Horse Of The Year Again Seven time Group One winner California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit), who will soon be retired to stud, has been crowned Horse Of The Year for the second time. Awarded the title at Gulfstream Park at the weekend, America’s all-time leading prize money earner was also voted as the winner of the prestigious title in 2014. Trained by Art Sherman to win 16 of his 26 starts so far, California Chrome was also voted as the champion older dirt male in a unanimous decision at the Eclipse Awards.

Arrogate Champion Three-Year-Old Male Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song), California Chrome’s only conqueror last season, was named Champion Three-Year-Old Male at the Eclipse Awards at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. The Juddmonte Farm raced colt took out two Grade Ones last season, including the Travers Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) by a dominant 13 and half lengths, before narrowly defeating California Chrome in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f). While, the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro), who won four Grade One’s last season taking her overall tally to seven, picked up the award for Champion Three-Year-Old female.

Champagne Room And Classic Empire Take Two-Year-Old Awards Classic Empire (Pioneerof The Nile), who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Gr 1, 8.5f) and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1, 8.5f) winner Champagne Room (Broken Vow) were crowned the Champion Two-Year-Old Male and Female respectively on Saturday evening. Classic Empire who took out two Grade One’s and a Grade Three this season with his only defeat coming when he unseated jockey Irad Ortiz in the Hopeful Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Saratoga in September. Champagne Room won the Sorrento Stakes (Gr 2, 6.5f) at Del Mar in August and was then placed in two Grade Ones, before winning at the Breeders’ Cup Meeting in November.

Drefong Champion Male SprinterAfter taking home the award for Champion Male Sprinter, Drefong (Gio Ponti) becomes only the fourth three-year-old to have earned the honour this century. The other three-year-olds winners include Lost In The Fog (Lost Soldier), Trinniberg (Teuflesberg) and most recently Runhappy (Super Saver). The Bob Baffert-trained Drefong was unbeaten in four races last season and the culmination of those efforts came when he took out the King’s Bishop Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Saratoga, which he then followed up when beating the older horses in the the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Gr 1, 6f) at Santa Anita in November.

Fourth Eclipse Award For Spendthrift’s BeholderThe now retired seven-year-old Beholder (Henny Hughes) secured the fourth Eclipse Award of her career when she was crowned Champion Older Dirt Female for the second consecutive year on Saturday evening. Beholder, who won landed the Vanity Mile (Gr 1, 8f) at Santa Anita second up this season, having taken out a Grade Three in her first start, before running second on her next three starts. However, in what was the last race of her career, she brought an end to the perfect record of Songbird, when she edged her out by just a nose to land the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (Gr 1, 9f) at Santa Anita. Beholder was retired following the victory and is reportedly set to visit Coolmore sire Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) in her first season as a broodmare.

A First For WinStar WinStar Farm has been crowned leading breeder at the Eclipse Awards on Saturday, backing up a move six years ago to improve the quality of its stallion roster and broodmare band. WinStar Farm, which has an ever increasing presence in Australia, was the leading breeder in several categories: by earnings, by number of graded victories (15) and number of overall wins (239) in 2016. The stud farm had a 17 per cent winning strike rate for horses bred at WinStar and their runners finished in the the prize money 43 per cent of the time. Tourist (Tiznow) was the headline act for WInStar Farm, with the five-year-old entire winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 1m) and Fourstardave Handicap (Gr 1, 1m) in 2016.

Juddmonte Take Owner AwardPrince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms was named as the premier owner at the Eclipse Awards at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. Headed by on track successes of the Juddmonte Farms-owned Arrogate and multiple Grade One turf winner Flintshire (Dansili) in 2016, they were also recognised for racing the William Mott-trained Suffused (Champs Elysees), who won the Glens Falls Handicap (Gr 3, 11f) at Saratoga. Flintshire, who has won at the elite level in three countries, was also named champion turf male at the Eclipse Awards. Last year, Flintshire won the Woodford Reserve Manhattan Stakes (Gr 1, 10f), the Sword Dancer Stakes (Gr 1, 12f) and the Bowling Green Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 1.5f).

A colt by Trippi (End Sweep) consigned by Drakenstein Stud topped the first day of the Cape Premier Yearling Sale on

Saturday after MV Magnier went to R6,000,000 (approximately $583,950) to secure the colt.

The colt, already named Charles, was catalogued as Lot 32, and is the first foal out of the Group Two winner Demanding Lady (Dynasty). His second dam is Demanding Damsel (Deputy Commander), the dam of three winners and a half-sister to the US Listed winner Kissimmee Kylie (Gold Tribute), with this being the family of the Aidan O’Brien-trained now Coolmore Stud-based Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) winner War Command (War Front) and New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Rollout The Carpet (Holy Roman Emperor).

"He's from a top-class nursery and is an outstanding individual," Magnier told the Racing Post. "We've bought him together with a couple of partners, and are delighted to have got him.

"This is a fantastic sale and a wonderful place to come to. The effort they've put in is

amazing and there are some lovely horses here. I've also been racing a couple of times here and have been very impressed.

"We've been in partnership with Markus Jooste for a couple of years now and we look forward to a great future with him."

Nine lots later a colt by Captain Al (Al Mufti) sold for R4,500,000 (approximately $437,957) to Bernard Marais to be the second top priced lot of the day. Another offering from Drakenstein Stud, Lot 41, is the second foal out of the multiple Group One winner Ebony Flyer (Jet Master) who is a half-sister to the fellow Group One winner Captain’s Love (Captain Al).

"I've bought him for an international client, and Team Valor will take a share in him," Marais told the Racing Post. "He's a lovely individual who is very athletic with a lot of substance. We'll take him back home and then decide where he'll go into training."

US-based agent Justin Casse went to R4,000,000 ($389,295) to secure Lot 114, the top priced filly. Sold by Klawervlei Stud, the filly is a daughter of Juddmonte Farm’s Frankel (Galileo) and out of the Irish-bred Fastnet Rock

(Danehill) mare Little Fastnet who was placed as a two-year-old. The filly’s second dam was the 2004 Irish Champion Two-Year-Old filly Damson (Entrepreneur) who has produced five winner headed by the Group Two winner Requinto (Dansili).

"We thought she was the best Frankel in the sale, and we thought she would make this price. She has a great walk and hopefully has a good career ahead of her," Casse said.

Three lots by Frankel sold for R5,900,000 at an average of R1,966,666 (approximately $191,403).

China Horse Club purchased two lots on Saturday, the most expensive of these being a colt by Captain Al out of the Australian-bred mare Happy Archer (Dubawi) who was purchased for R3,750,000 (approximately R364,964). Catalogued as Lot 79, from the draft of Drakenstein Stud, the colt is the second foal out of the Group One winner Happy Archer who is a half-sister to the Australian Listed winner Femina Fashion (Shamardal).

Overall 113 lots sold for R70,425,000 (approximately $6,854,037)at an average of R623,230 (approximately $60,655) and a median of R300,000 (approximately $29,197).

Captain Al finished the day as the leading sire with nine lots having sold for R13,700,000 at an average of R1,522,222 (approximately $148,148). Klawervlei Stud were the leading vendors after day one having sold 23 lots for R19,550,000 at an average of R850,000 (approximately $82,725). The Drakenstein Stud draft on behalf of Gaynor Rupert meanwhile sold seven lots for R19,450,000 at an average of R2,778,571 (approximately $270,421), finishing the day as the leading vendor by average.

MV Magnier bought two lots for R7,900,000 to finish the day as the leading buyer. In addition to purchasing the top lot he also went to R1,900,000 for Lot 40, a filly by Captain Al out of the Irish-bred winning Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) mare Ebaraya. Louis Le Metayer’s Astute Bloodstock meanwhile purchased one lot for R650,000.

The second and final day of the sale continued on Sunday.

Page 8: Stallion Watch - ANZ Bloodstock News · 2019-08-20 · In 2013 Swing Dance slipped to Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago) before producing a filly foal by Your Song (Fastnet Rock) in

@anz_news anzbloodstocknews.com| 8 |

Your draft is much bigger this year. What is the reason for this?

“There are two reasons for this. Over the past few years the quality of mares we have at Westbury has made steady progress and is now both sizeable and boasts some nice pedigrees; while the young stallions we have like Swiss Ace, Redwood, and Reliable Man have been well received by the market and their progeny are performing very well on the racetrack.”

Which are your standout colts and

fillies and what qualities do they have? “With a large draft it is not easy to single

out a handful of horses as there are many with plenty to recommend them, but the ones which appeal personally to me are:-

“Lot 8 Reliable Man - Visa Lisa filly; the dam is by the outstanding Redoute’s Choice and the filly is a quality individual with a deep girth and walks well.

“Lot 126 Swiss Ace - Derrydane filly; the filly is a full sister to the talented Group-winning sprinter Passing Shot and to the recently Group Two-placed mare Rising Shot, the stallion is flying and she has a pedigree to go with her good physical appearance.

“Lot 142 High Chaparral - Eileen filly; from the last crop of High Chaparral, this filly is also out of a Redoute’s Choice mare and has a great head and is very well balanced.

“Lot 277 All Too Hard - Marquardt colt; out of a quality racemare in Marquardt, this colt

bears a strong resemblance to his sire All Too Hard and looks precocious enough that he can make into a smart two-year-old.”

Which lot has surprised you most in the prep?

“Over the last few weeks one of the most improved horses in the draft has been the Reliable Man colt from The Darling One (Lot 444). A first foal, he has lengthened well and really shaped up well as we approach the last few weeks.”

Which stallions do you think will prove

popular at the sale? “Without a doubt Savabeel and Tavistock

will command plenty of interest, while there are a number of good proven sires represented with the likes of Choisir, Exceed and Excel, Darci Brahma, Fastnet Rock, Frankel, High Chaparral, Hinchinbrook, I Am Invincible, Iffraaj, Makfi, Medaglia d’Oro, O’Reilly, Pins, Redoute’s Choice, Sebring, Snitzel, So You Think, and Written Tycoon to name a few.”

Who are your picks of the first season

sires on offer at the sale this year? “The trends from Australia are sure to

follow with the good yearlings by Dundeel and Zoustar will have strong support again while I would expect Shamexpress to have some good yearlings at Karaka. Other first season sires which we have good yearlings by are Camelot, Declaration of War, and Sizzling.”

How do you think the market will be at

the sale compared to the last few years and why?

“The Magic Millions Sale was extremely successful and one would suspect that New Zealand should also be on the radar for most buyers when considering the success of the sale and the quality of horses produced from Karaka year in and year out.

“I would expect nice horses with pedigree to be popular and the feedback from buyers on the

Gold Coast was that they were looking forward to being at Karaka. The value of buying in New Zealand stacks up very well for buyers and there will be another line of good horses available – it is just a matter of finding the right one!”

If there was one thing you could change

about the NZ breeding / racing industry what would it be and why?

“Quite simply our prize money. We produce a high quality product in New Zealand in the way of both horses and horse-people, and it is somewhat disappointing to know that we have all the ingredients for a perfect racing environment, yet we are unable to capitalise fully with a number of our best horses and people based offshore due to the level of prizemoney and the financial returns available to participants in New Zealand. The day we get our prizemoney and structure right we can compete with the best.”

What restaurant would you recommend

to someone over the sale and what would you recommend they order?

“The Sole Bar and Restaurant is always hard to beat if you enjoy seafood while the location of the Viaduct offers a fantastic ambiance and is within close proximity of most major hotels.”

Analysis: The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Northwest Passage proved to be a class above his opposition, winning very easily. He settled in third place, behind a sound tempo in the Soft6 conditions,

before moving up to take the lead at the home turn. He then headed to the outside rail (looking for better going) and raced away to score by a big margin. The well performed filly Life On The Wire was a handy fifth (racing deep), got through to be a distant second at the 200m and battled on to hold that position, seven and a half lengths behind the winner. Trusted Warrior was eighth early on, improved from the 800m, went widest of all in the straight and battled on quite well for third, narrowly missing second in a photo.

Analysis: The Lindsay Park-trained filly Vintage Quartz, after showing potential with placings at her first three starts, resumed to score a smart win here. She was third early on but gradually drove through from her good barrier (3) to take the lead nearing the 600m. She increased her advantage from the 200m and then went on to score quite impressively. Piccadillies, the half-sister to champion sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill) is still yet to win, now with three placing from four starts. She travelled in third place, but wide without cover, challenged (still wide) at the home turn and then and kept fighting well for a sound first up second.

Analysis: The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained filly Long Time Ago resumed after finishing seventh on debut in a 3YO Fillies’ Maiden (1100m) at Canterbury on 31 August to score a very good win here despite a difficult trip. She raced in fourth place but trapped wide without cover before challenging (very deep) at the home turn. She got to the front at the 50m, fought gamely for a very good win and looks a filly with a good future. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly The Pinnacle has now finished second at her only two starts. Resuming here, she settled midfield (wide with cover), went widest of all at the home turn and then ran on well for a good second in a really promising first up effort.

Analysis: After seconds at his first two starts, the Godolphin-raced three-year-old Eusebio resumed to score a very smart win here. He was slow to move, was near last in the nine-horse field before improving to settle in sixth place, one off the rails, behind a solid pace. He made a quick move (deep) nearing the home turn, took the lead at the 100m and then drew away to score with his ears pricked. He is a horse to watch.

SWISS ACE

Analysis: The Clarry Conners-trained filly Saskia Rose, who had not finished closer than seventh in three prior starts, improved at her second run this preparation to score an impressive win here and in very smart time (56.69). She was quickly away, went straight to the front and ran along at a solid pace. She grabbed a good break nearing the home turn and then went on to score by a big margin.
