President’s ReportA wonderful 2013 SydneyAutumn Carnival drew to a closeon April 27 with many notablesuccesses for NSW-bred horses asoutlined in this magazine.

Our flagship Australian yearlingsale, the 97th Inglis Easterauction, produced a very strongresult considering currenteconomic conditions.

The strength of the market wasdue to great interest frominternational buyers.

Australian thoroughbreds, particularly the products of NSWbreeders and sires, are now widelyrecognised as being of the bestworld standard which explainswhy overseas interests spent anestimated $35 million at the salewhich generated overall turnoverin excess of $91 million.

The previous Australian recordprice for a yearling of $3 millionwas exceeded twice when $5million was paid for Black Caviar’shalf-brother by Redoute’s Choiceand then $4 million was bid tosecure an outstanding colt byFastnet Rock.

In all, nine youngsters each soldfor $1 million or more, while theselected sessions produced anaverage and median up 32 percentand 25 percent respectively on the2012 figures. Including Session 2,the overall average price was avery healthy $247,115 and the

median was similar to last year at $160,000 but 115 horses (24 percent) were passed in whichis a cause of some concern as apercentage of the 369 horseswhich changed hands.

AI case appeal

As foreshadowed in my lastreport, Mr. Bruce McHugh hasapplied to the Federal Court to appeal the decision handeddown in December whichcomprehensively dismissed hiscase to allow the use of artificialinsemination in thoroughbredbreeding in Australia and permit horses so produced to be registered for racing.

The appeal has been allowed andis expected to be heard by threejudges later this year.

“Australian thoroughbreds, particularly the products ofNSW breeders and sires, arenow widely recognised as beingof the best world standard.”

Mare levy proposal

By now, all breeders should have receivedfull information on the proposalformulated by Thoroughbred BreedersAustralian (TBA) and the Rural IndustriesResearch and Development Corporation(RIRDC) to ensure future funding forequine research in Australia.

With the cooperation of the AustralianStud Book it is proposed from 2014 tocreate a levy of $10 per mare covered perseason paid by the stallion owner and $10per mare returned to be paid by thebroodmare owner.

This conforms to Federal Governmentguidelines for a statutory levy whichattracts dollar-for-dollar matching bygovernment.

Seminars to outline the proposal and givebreeders an opportunity to express theirview will be held throughout Australiaduring May and June with a formal ballotto be undertaken by the AustralianElectoral Commission in July.

Members of TBNSW and non-memberbreeders are invited to attend seminars inSydney on Wednesday, May 22 and atScone on Thursday, May 23, whilebreeders in northern and southern areasof the state may find it more convenient toattend one of the meetings in Queensland(May 14, 15 and 16) or in Victoria (June 5,6 and 7).

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2013 5

Timeform Review

Timeform Review By Gary Crispe and Alex Steedman

The 2013 Autumn carnivals in both Melbourne and Sydney are ones racing fans should savour for yearsto come as they witnessed some brilliant displays by a number of Australia’s finest gallopers.

Some 30 Group 1 events were conducted overthe course of the Melbourne and Sydneyautumn carnivals with 11 of them won by aselect group of four superstars.

Making those 11 Group 1 successes significantis the fact eight of them were claimed by threechampions whose race careers, at least inAustralia, have been brought to a close aftertheir main autumn assignments. Racegoerswere treated to one last campaign fromunbeaten champion sprinter Black Caviar.

Black Caviar made her highly anticipatedracetrack return in the Group 1 LightningStakes (1000m), eight months aftermaintaining an unbeaten record at startnumber 22 with a nail-biting victory in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1207m) at Royal Ascot.

There were plenty of concerns surroundingBlack Caviar on resuming after a generousspell yet the champion mare quickly put those queries to bed.

After jumping smartly, Black Caviar was soonidling in front putting behind her amazingsectionals with consummate ease, her last600m timed to take 31.36 seconds with theoverall race time of 55.42 seconds a new racerecord, eclipsing the previous record set bySpecial 28 years ago.

After careful analysis it was clear Black Caviarhad not run to her peak Timeform rating of136 achieved in the 2012 Lightning Stakes

renewal, but she had gone close, running to133+ which included a length allowance abovethe raw form for the manner of the victoryand amount in hand on the line.

Black Caviar’s 2.5 length win was her thirdstraight success in the Lightning Stakes andshe is the only horse to have achieved that featduring the event’s 68 year history. Her first upwin sent out an ominous warning to futurerivals with Peter Moody declaring the marewas in the best shape of her career.

The next stop on Black Caviar’s farewellcampaign was the Group 1 William ReidStakes (1200m), an event the daughter of BelEsprit won in 2011. The way she put her rivalsaway even at start 24 still left fans speechless.

Black Caviar sat outside the leader KarutaQueen in a very casual early speed until justbefore the turn. At that point the sprint wenton. Such is her dominance that within a fewstrides, the whole field was off the bridleunder pressure, Black Caviar soon threelengths in front on straightening, coasting to the line yet again, four lengths clear of her rivals.

The merit of her second William Reid Stakesvictory was assessed at 131+. This figurelocked in perfectly with the ratings profiles of the field going into the race as well ashistorical race standards that suggested a value of 130.9.

Discussions about her racing future hit

fever pitch with a return to Royal Ascot, aQueensland campaign and even racing on foranother 12 months all being bandied about.

Little did racegoers at Randwick on April 13know, but the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes(1200m) was to be Black Caviar’s final race start.

The TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) looked one of the tougher assignments Black Caviar hadfaced for some time with rivals includingtough sprinter Rain Affair, resounding Galaxywinner Bel Sprinter and also Group 1 winningcolt Epaulette. While not quite at their best,Group 1 winners Hay List, Sea Siren andAtomic Force added further depth to the line up.

It was a rare occasion during her career thatBlack Caviar was forced to work as LukeNolen used the great mare early and forced hisway off the rails around the 800m mark.

Hay List and jockey Glyn Schofield attemptedto pocket Black Caviar turning for homealthough failed as Nolen navigated her into an ideal spot.

Finding clear space immediately uponstraightening, Black Caviar wasted no timeclicking into top gear and by the Randwickrise went about kicking away from her rivals.

From there she cruised home for a threelength success with Epaulette chasing in vainand Bel Sprinter claiming third. It was thebiggest winning margin recorded in a TJSmith Stakes since the race was elevated toGroup 1 status in 2005.

In reaching a rating for the merit of the win, once again Black Caviar’s performance wasassessed as a length better than the bareperformance putting it at 134+, equal to her2011 T J Smith victory and her third highestrating achieved behind 136 (2012 Lightning)and 135 (2011 Newmarket Hcp).

The following Wednesday, connections ofBlack Caviar called a press conference whereher retirement was announced. Trainer PeterMoody told media all involved with BlackCaviar wanted the mare to finish racing whilststill at her peak.

Black Caviar (Luke Nolen) returns aer her 25th victory in the 2013 T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick.

“Trainer Peter Moody told media all involved with Black Caviar wanted the mare to finish racing whilst still

at her peak.”

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2013 7

Black Caviar remained unbeaten from 25starts, 15 of which came at Group 1 level. Assoon as Black Caviar’s half brother All TooHard began to move out of the champion’sshadow, his time racing in Australia alreadylooks to be done.

Connections considered taking All Too Hardto Royal Ascot in June for the 1600m QueenAnne Stakes after claiming three Group 1successes against older horses this season butultimately decided not to go and the superblybred colt has now been retired to stand atVinery, Scone, from September.

All Too Hard’s latest preparation followed abreakout spring campaign where he won theCaulfield Guineas and ran a gallant second inthe Cox Plate behind Ocean Park. The CasinoPrince colt was sold to Vinery Stud over theSummer in a bid to quell former ownerNathan Tinkler’s increasing financialconcerns. A rumoured $25million price tagappeared a steal even at that time and his new connections reaped instant rewards when All Too Hard resumed in the C.F OrrStakes (1400m).

Following in the footsteps of his older sisterwho won the 2012 renewal, All Too Hardoozed class as he settled back, peeled deepand struck the front 100m from home.

Making the win all the more impressive wasAll Too Hard’s ability to defy the trend offrontrunners saluting at Caulfield thatafternoon being one of only two who camefrom worse than midfield. The hassle free winwas assessed at 121.

Next on the agenda was the Futurity Stakesalso over the 1400m at Caulfield. TeamHawkes knew their latest stable star wasvulnerable resuming over 1400m howeverwith a run under his belt, he went to a newlevel second up.Drawn more favourably thanin the C.F Orr Stakes, All Too Hard jumpedon terms with his rivals and Dunn wiselyeased the colt back to midfield after 400m.

It was clear approaching the turn that All TooHard was travelling comfortably. Onceproduced soon after he showed dazzlingacceleration to put the issue beyond doubtcoasting home over three lengths clear ofGlass Harmonium and King Mufhasa.

In assessing the merit of the performance, All Too Hard was found at the time to haverecorded a new master figure of 128+,eclipsing his previous best of 127 achievedwhen runner up to Ocean Park in the 2012Cox Plate.

Connections had every intention of sendingAll Too Hard back to compete with his ownage group in the Australian Guineas (1600m)a week later where he looked a certainty

however a virus derailed those plans and hewas subsequently freshened to go on toSydney. A potential trip to Royal Ascot hungin the balance when All Too Hard returned inthe Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) atRandwick on April 27.

The boom colt took on a strong field whichincluded glamour mare More Joyous, RainAffair and Epaulette who ran second behindAll Too Hard’s champion half sister BlackCaviar the start prior in the TJ Smith Stakes(1200m). While not expected to fire onresuming, the likes of dual Group 1 winnerRangirangdoo and 2012 Melbourne Cupsecond placegetter Fiorente further added tothe star studded line-up.

There were a few nervous moments in thestraight for connections as early leader RainAffair still held a sizeable margin however AllToo Hard began to accelerate approaching thefinal furlong.

While Rain Affair was gallant in defeat, AllToo Hard’s class prevailed as he claimed afourth Group 1 win and his third against theolder horses.

All Too Hard’s All Aged Stakes victory yieldedthe colt a new peak Timeform figure of 129,exceeding his previous best by one poundwhen saluting in the Futurity Stakes (1400m).Making the win even more exciting is the factAll Too Hard was not at optimum fitness yetstill delivered a captivating sprint over thefinal 250m.

A winning effort of 129 is the equal highestrated performance seen in the event with onlythe mighty Sunline having achieved suchheights when taking out the 2000 and 2002 AllAged Stakes renewals by decisive margins. While impeccably bred, All Too Hard’s stallionstocks continue rising as he adds to his Group1 tally.

All Too Hard’s appeal not only lies in the colt’spedigree but his versatility with Group winsranging from 1200m to 1600m plus thatgallant second behind Ocean Park in the CoxPlate (2040m) during the spring.

Had All Too Hard gone to the UK for theQueen Anne Stakes and won he would haveemulated the feat of the Coolmore sireHaradasun who claimed the 2008 renewalwith an effort assessed at 125. This was one of the weaker renewals of the race in the past decade as champions such as Frankel,Canford Cliffs and Goldikova have beenrecent winners.

A peak Timeform figure of 129 however putsAll Too Hard somewhere around the mark ofboth Canford Cliffs and Goldikova when theysaluted in the Queen Anne Stakes.

Also joining the stallion ranks during thespring will be five time Group 1 winner Pierrowho in April was acquired by Coolmore for areported $35million.

Pierro’s final race campaign was an impressiveone with the colt adding three more wins tohis tally, a pair of them Group 1s against theolder horses.

The son of Lonhro commenced his autumnpreparation with a dogged victory in theGroup 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) beforeclaiming the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes(1300m). It was Pierro’s first win against oldergallopers under weight-for-age conditions andbought his unbroken winning sequence inSydney to nine.

With the return of blinkers second up,racegoers witnessed a far more dominantdisplay by the colt than in the Hobartvillewhere he scrambled home to claim a narrowwin over Rebel Dane.

Under the guidance of Jim Cassidy for the firsttime, Pierro was parked behind the leaderRain Affair in transit and quickly challengedthat galloper early in the straight. He struckthe front 150m from home before a three-quarter length win ensued.

Stablemate More Joyous chased in vain as shefinished second, unable to post her thirdstraight Canterbury Stakes success withSolzhenitsyn flashing late for third.

In assessing the merit of the form, the pre racerating and form profiles of the field suggested

a 125 value for Pierro, a pound higher thanthe five year winning average Timeform ratingfor the race and a pound lower than historicalrace standards.

Pierro’s 125 made him the equal highest ratedthree-year-old winner alongside Paratroopers(2006) of the Canterbury Stakes in the last 25years, eclipsing Dance Hero, one of GaiWaterhouse’s Golden Slipper winners whowon the 2005 renewal running to 121.

He appeared even better suited third up in theGeorge Ryder Stakes (1500m). Sent out as anoverwhelming odds-on favourite, NashRawiller rode him like the best horse in thefield as the leading jockey kept the colt out oftrouble, sitting worse than midfield and widethroughout.

Once balanced up in the straight, Pierroshowed his trademark turn of foot to go afterKing Mufhasa and gain the ascendencynearing the line, winning by a neck with ShootOut in third place.

Pierro improved on his George Ryder effortby a pound however the 126 he yielded onthat occasion was still a pound shy of hismaster rating achieved in the 2012Champagne Stakes (1600m). Owner GregKolivos indicated following the win thatPierro’s swansong was likely to be theprestigious Doncaster Mile a fortnight later.

Pierro was sent out as favourite for the eventhowever with 57kg on his back did havehistory against him. Regular rider NashRawiller gave Pierro every chance sittingmidfield on the fence in transit and savingground turning for home.

Prominent and in clear running room onstraightening, once they had beaten off

the challenge from Norzita at the 200m, Pierro looked set to create history until Sacred Falls emerged along the rails, alsodenying trainer Gai Waterhouse a recordeighth Doncaster win.

Pierro lost no admirers though as the coltshowcased all of the fighting qualities hepossessed, only going down to anotherpromising Group 1- winning three-year-oldcarrying 4kg less than him. The merit of therun was assessed at 128, up a pound from hisoutstanding juvenile form and a worthyretiring master Timeform value.

Sacred Falls’ Doncaster Mile was the only timePierro tasted defeat in Sydney from 11 racestarts as he amassed an impressive record. He became the just the sixth horse to claim the juvenile Triple Crown and furthermaximised his stud value with Group 1 winsin the Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and GeorgeRyder Stakes (1500m) this autumn againststrong older opposition.

It is sad Black Caviar, All Too Hard and Pierro will not be seen competing again onAustralian racetracks and we can only hopetheir progeny can carry on a lasting legacy to these champions.

With a mass exodus of Group 1 stars after thisautumn, fortunately we are still left with boomcolt It’s A Dundeel who became the first horsesince the mighty Octagonal in 1996 to claimthe 3YO Sydney Triple Crown of theRandwick Guineas (1600m), Rosehill Guineas(2000m) and Australian Derby (2400m). TheMurray Baker-trained colt showed plenty ofpromise during his first Australianpreparation with a highlight his slendervictory in the Group 1 Spring ChampionStakes (2000m).

The High Chaparral three-year-old mighthave had enough by the time he arrived inMelbourne for the Moonee Valley Vase(2040m) and the Victoria Derby (2500m)however showed encouraging signs whencontesting the Hobartville Stakes (1400m) atRandwick first up.

Running a respectable fourth on that occasionbehind Pierro, Baker then applied blinkers toIt’s A Dundeel for the first time in the Group1 Randwick Guineas (1600m). In a repeat ofthe Spring Champion Stakes, It’s A Dundeeland Proisir fought out the finish with theformer edging ahead late.

The Randwick Guineas was an encouragingwin for the kiwi raider however It’s A Dundeel

went to a whole new level in the Group 1Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

It’s A Dundeel won the Rosehill Guineas in a canter with the colt’s last-to-first victorystamping his authority over the current crop of three-year-old stayers. His six-and-three-quarter length demolition job yielded It’s A Dundeel a new master Timeform rating of 125p.

While the ATC Australian Derby Day willlargely be remembered as Black Caviar’sracetrack farewell, It’s A Dundeel providedracing fans with a tasty entrée in the featureevent.Under James McDonald, It’s A Dundeelsettled down near the tail of the field but madea fast move approaching the home turn to geton the back of his main rival Philippi, turningas the widest runner in the ten horse classic.

It’s A Dundeel was travelling so easily that hepulled his way to the lead and bolted awayfrom Philippi winning untouched, recordingone of the easiest group one wins in history, his six length margin the biggest Derby rompsince the Tommy Smith-trained Prince Grantscored by eight lengths in 1965.

The Australian Derby admittedly lacked depthhowever It’s A Dundeel was still found to haveachieved a new Timeform rating of 126. Sucha figure sits well above the five year winningaverage Timeform rating for the race but wellwithin the possible values suggested byhistorical race analysis.

At that level It’a A Dundeel is the equalhighest rated ATC Australian Derby winnerin the last 20 years, joining Octagonal who ranto that figure during the 1996 renewal.

After a pair easy wins against his own age to round out a resounding Triple Crownsuccess, It’s A Dundeel ran second in theQueen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) behindReliable Man.

Dropping back in trip and taking on the olderhorses for the first time was never an idealcombination but to his credit he fought onwell behind a French Derby winner. .

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes quinella each lookCox Plate bound at this stage with aMelbourne Cup tilt also on the agenda for It’sA Dundeel. There was also a big winningmargin in the fillies staying feature as RoyalDescent claimed the Australian Oaks(2400m).

The Chris Waller-trained filly backed up inthe ATC Australian Oaks (2400m) seven daysafter comfortably claiming the Adrian KnoxStakes (2000m). If Gerry Harvey thought thatwas clinical, the prominent owner was given atreat during the Oaks.

downgraded throughout the afternoon, ChrisWaller was toying with the idea of scratchingthe filly from the Group 1 feature which in theend was conducted on a heavy 10.

It turned out the Redoute’s Choice three-year-old relished the conditions on offer as sheskipped to a dominant victory. Under theguidance of Nash Rawiller, Royal Descentsettled worse than midfield as NZ Oaks-winner More Than Sacred set the tempo. As the field fanned wide turning for home,Royal Descent cut the corner, going from near last to first in a matter of strides.

Royal Descent decimated her rivals in thestraight as she cruised away from them toclaim a 10 length win eased down. Herresounding success was the biggest winningmargin in a Randwick Group 1 since MightAnd Power took out the 1998 Queen ElizabethStakes (2000m) by 10.5 lengths.

Racegoers were witness to a rare effortproduced by Royal Descent with theperformance rated the equal second highestAustralian Oaks victory in the past 25 yearsbehind only 1993 winner Mahaya assessed at 123. Royal Descent was awarded a new peak figure of 119p, 10 pounds superior to her previous best achieved in the Adrian Knox Stakes.

It is hard not to be impressed by what RoyalDescent has produced during her seven startinitial preparation which commenced with a2.5 length maiden success over 1200m atCanterbury last December.

The filly has already amassed a handy blacktype record with her ATC Australian Oakssuccess the jewel in the crown also featuringan Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) win and agallant second in the Keith Nolan Classic(1600m).

Waller did not allude to a particular spring

goal following Royal Descent’s last start romphowever it is hard to imagine it not involvingone of the three majors. While getting excitedabout three-year-old fillies form is generallynot advisable, three out of the past four Oakswinners have gone onto enjoy Group successas mares.

The 2012 winner Streama took out the Group2 Tristarc Stakes (1600m) during the springwhile 2010 Oaks winner Once Were Wild and2009 winner Daffodil claimed the Chairman’sQuality (2600m) and Windsor Park Plate(1600m) respectively.

Republic Lass was the last Oaks winner (2002)to go on and claim a subsequent AustralianGroup 1 victory as a mare when she took outthe Ranvet Stakes (2000m) the followingautumn.

Pinker Pinker and Tuesday Joy each ran thirdduring their respective tilts at Australian Oakssuccess before claiming career best wins in the2011 Cox Plate (2040m) and 2008 BMW(2400m) respectively.

A number of other fillies are worthy ofmention for their feats throughout theautumn, particularly the juveniles.

All four of the juvenile Group 1s conductedthus far this season have been won by fillieswith Miracles Of Life flying the flag first in theBlue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Miracles Of Life debuted at Morphettville Parkover 1000m with a five and a half length rompthen backed that up with a ten length winningeffort over 1050m at Morphettville.

Affectionately known in the Daniel Clarkenstable as Barbie, Miracles Of Life started towarrant respect in Melbourne when easilywinning the Blue Diamond Preview (1000m)by four lengths.

In the Blue Diamond, the baldy-faced,powerful little chestnut began smartly fromthe ace barrier with regular rider LaurenStojakovic taking the sit just off the earlyspeed. She eased out approaching the turn toget clear running and once produced in thestraight kicked away quickly, putting the raceout of reach for her opponents.

In assessing her win, Miracles Of Life wasawarded a Timeform figure of 118 which sitsamongst the mid range of previous BlueDiamond winners.

Miracles Of Life winning the Blue DiamondStakes was a fairytale story for the unheraldedjockey/trainer duo of Lauren Stojakovic,Daniel Clarken and the pint-sized speedmachine from Adelaide.

The Golden Slipper win though contained all of the usual suspects with Gai Waterhouseand prominent owner George Altomontecelebrating success thanks to Exceed AndExcel daughter Overreach.

Overreach jumped as a clear favourite for theGolden Slipper following dominant successesin the Widden (1100m) and Moet AndChandon Stakes (1200m).

Her class again prevailed during the GoldenSlipper in part thanks to a well judged ride by the talented Tommy Berry.

Whilst the rail was generally treated like quick sand in key lead-up races, Tommy Berryand brother Nathan went about debunking the theory as they walked the track prior toThe BMW.

It revealed nothing wrong with the rail whichis right where Overreach stayed throughoutafter jumping perfectly from barrier 1.

Tucked away in behind the leaders Kuroshioand stablemate Sweet Idea, Overreach foundclear space near the fence immediately uponstraightening. Overreach levelled up withSweet Idea at the 250m and from there wasted little time in skipping away for a 1.8 length success.

One of the lightest raced winners in thehistory of the Golden Slipper, Overreach was having just her fourth race start yettravelled and raced like a youngster with much more maturity.

At the line she had almost two lengths tospare, the third biggest winning margin by a filly in the last 25 years behind Miss Finland(4.5 lengths in 2004) and Bint Marscay (2.3lengths in 1993).Miracles of Life scores impressively in the Blue Diamond Stakes.

“Miracles Of Life debuted atMorphettville Park over 1000m with a fiveand a half length romp then backed thatup with a ten length winning effort over

1050m at Morphettville.”

Timeform Review Continued…

Gai Waterhouse’s fifth Golden Slipper winnercame away from the lucrative juvenile featurewith a Timeform rating of 121+ making herthe highest rated two-year-old in the countryso far this season.

A tilt at the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes(1400m) then ensued however Overreachcould only manage third behind the PeterSnowden-trained Guelph.

Guelph went into the Group 1 Sires’ ProduceStakes following defeats behind Miracles OfLife and Overreach in the Blue DiamondStakes and Golden Slipper Stakes respectively.

Taking on Overreach again, Guelph wentabout turning the tables on the GaiWaterhouse filly as they each stepped up to 1400m.

The Peter Snowden-trained filly was workingto the line well during the Golden SlipperStakes and delivered on those encouragingsigns over the longer 1400m journey.

In pursuit of becoming the second filly toclaim the Reisling/Golden Slipper/Sires’ treble since Merlene in 1996, Overreach went forward as Guelph settled worse than midfield.

Guelph was the beneficiary of a solid temposet by Overreach who began to shorten stridejust outside the 100m.

At that point, Guelph was still full of running as she struck the front 25m fromhome before drawing clear for a three-quarterlength success.

Her maiden Group 1 success yielded thejuvenile a new master Timeform rating of 119,

seven pounds clear of Guelph’s prior peakfigure of 112 run to during the Blue DiamondPrelude (1100m).

The filly was sent out as favourite in theChampagne Stakes (1600m) despite beinguntried over the distance.

A mature looking daughter of Exceed AndExcel in her appearance, the verdict amongstexperts leading into the race was she wouldget the trip with minimal fuss.

What experts or connections of Guelphweren’t expecting though was a tearawayleader in Fuerza who changed the complexionof the race. As Fuerza charged to the lead,Guelph was slow into stride and settledfurther back than expected.

Her chances of a Sires’ Produce/ChampagneStakes double looked in serious jeopardy atthe top of the straight as she was trappedbehind a wall of runners with Fuerza stillholding a sizeable margin.

Fuerza continued to hold a gap over his rivalswhile Guelph weaved between runners beforefinding clear space at the 200m. Still with a lotof work to do, Guelph knuckled down andcollared the tiring Fuerza in a photo finish.

It’s not often a horse can get away with such aluckless run in Group 1 company however thelack of depth amongst this two-year-old cropwas evident in the Champagne Stakes.

Guelph’s latest effort only yielded a Timeformrating of 111, eight pounds shy of her masterrating run to in the Sires’ Produce Stakes(1400m).

Her performance sits pounds below theprevious five year winning average of theevent which had been won by the likes ofPierro, Helmet, Skilled and Onemorenomore

Only Samantha Miss in the previous five years has won the Champagne Stakes with afigure less than 120 when she narrowly deniedthe now emerging stallion Sebring TripleCrown glory.

Guelph’s Champagne Stakes success isactually the lowest winning figure of thejuvenile mile event since Euphoria saluted inthe 1994 renewal.

The Champagne Stakes (1600m) concludesfeature two-year-old racing in Sydney for thecarnival and wraps up another successfulautumn for the Peter Snowden juveniles.

Guelph spearheaded the stable’s charge whilethe supporting cast included Golden Slipperrunner up Sidestep, Kindergarten Stakeswinner Safeguard and even Champollion inthe Schweppervescence.

With Guelph only running to 111 in theChampagne Stakes, past trends indicateGolden Slipper winner Overreach will remainthe top rated juvenile this season with amaster Timeform figure of 121.

Feature juvenile racing heads to Queenslandnow where it is rare that a two-year-old scalessuch Timeform heights.

As seen when looking at the two-year-oldwins amassed by Peter Snowden this season,Darley race a majority of their horses underthe care of the leading trainer.

Also based at Warwick Farm, astute horsemanGuy Walter has made the most of limitedopportunities with runners from the globalbreeding operation as evidenced with thesuccess enjoyed by Appearance.

Appearance is now a multiple Group 1 winneras she became the only mare to claim theMyer Classic (1600m) in the spring beforeautumn features of the Queen Of The Turf(1500m) and Coolmore Classic (1500m)during the course of a season.

Other Group 1 winners over the past fewmonths in Melbourne and Sydney includeMrs Onassis (Oakleigh Plate), Ferlax(Australian Guineas), Shamexpress(Newmarket Handicap), Super Cool(Australian Cup), Shoot Out (ChippingNorton Stakes), Foreteller (Ranvet Stakes),Norzita (Vinery Stud Stakes), Fiveandahalfstar(The BMW) and Sydney Cup winnerMourayan.

Royal Descent runs away with the 2013 Patinack Farm Australian Oaks.

“Taking on Overreach again, Guelph went about turning the tables on the Gai Waterhouse filly as they each stepped up to 1400m.”

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2013 13

Planning Broodmare Matings

PETER JENKINS,ARROWFIELD STUD

With so many mares owned byArrowfield and clients, can you explainthe planning process you go through?

PJ: I evaluate each new mare going to stud forthe first time (or the first time for Arrowfield)against all our stallions. I make notes takinginto account firstly whether she conforms toknown affinities with our proven sires andsecondly whether she possesses any lines that indicate a strong individual prepotencysuch as inbreeding or relatively close femalelinebreeding.

Usually I arrive at an order of preference withthree to five or even six stallions in our lineupfor each mare. is is done entirely onlinebreeding analysis. e notes carry forwardfrom year to year but can be subject toupdating as previously unproven sires come on stream and begin to display affinities withparticular broodmare lines.

We then have a matings meeting where eachmare is discussed in turn. At that pointphysical, temperamental and commercialaspects are considered as well as pedigreerecommendations in finding the most suitablemating for each mare. We look at the stage shehas reached in her career, the stallions she hasvisited in the two previous years and thequality and outcome of her foals by sires still

active on the Arrowfield roster. Aerdiscussion, the bloodstock team then decide onthe mating for the next season. Sometimes thiscan depend on the outcome of the foal she iscarrying as to whether we repeat the samemating. My primary selection is not always theone chosen but generally the one selected willbe among the top three recommended.

Is it a constantly evolving processdepending on results or do you sit downat a specific point and do it in one hit?

PJ: e analysis, which takes varying lengthsof time, is generally undertaken around lateApril/early May prior to the matings meetingwhich usually takes an entire day given thenumber of mares we have.

For a full sister to an older mare which hasvisited a number of our stallions it may takeonly a short time. For mares with somewhatobscure pedigrees it can take some time toestablish an order of compatibility. In additionto the time spent analysing the mares I spendconsiderable time constantly re-evaluatingwhich lines are proving most successful withour active sires. For those with only a few cropsracing some deep analysis is needed to begin tounearth what I would describe as “commondenominators” in mare pedigrees that workwith a particular stallion.

With private clients, too, what advice doyou give them?

PJ: Many of our stud clients request analysis of their mares either through personal contactor email request via our website. My methodsof analysis would be the same as applied to thestud’s mares although it is useful to gain someindication from the owner regarding servicefee range and physical characteristics beforeembarking on such analysis. Of course, not all recommendations made to stud clients are followed and sometimes those clients will seek other opinions before making theirown final decision.

Most breeders are now thinking about stallion matings for their mares in the lead up to the coming 2013stud season. Caroline Searcy questioned representatives of three prominent NSW farms to learn how theyapproach the process and we believe their answers will interest all TBNSW members whether they have onemare or 100.Respected and highly experienced professional pedigree analyst Peter Jenkins explained to Caroline how he works within the large Arrowfield Studoperation with a number of resident stallions, Turangga Stud owner Stuart Ramsey outlined his approach and Corumbene Stud owner GeorgeAltomonte, with about 30 – 40 mares to mate, gave some details of the work he puts in which has yielded two Golden Slipper winners, Sebring andOverreach, Wager and this season’s stakeswinners Bennetta and Ichihara.

Stuart Ramsey, too, is a breeder who gives a lot of thought to his matings which over the years have resulted in black type winners like Karuta Queen,Headway, Elite Falls, Sky Cuddle, Sky Love, Highly Recommended, Mr. Murphy, Golden Fawn and Fast Clip.

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2013 15

Naturally you’d prefer to have thosemares stay with your stallions, howeverdo you give them advice on otherstallions if they feel none of yours suittheir mare?

PJ: For long term clients of the farm who havelarger broodmare bands I have on occasionshelped them with advice on matings outside ofArrowfield and yes, remarkable as it may seem,I sometimes advise against a particular matinga client may wish to undertake with their mareto one of our stallions if I can see no real meritin such a match. Such frankness and honestybuilds strong relationships and goodwill withclients.

Is it limiting to be largely restricted to a small group of stallions withArrowfield’s own mares although thereis a wide range of sires on the farm? Do you breed to outside stallions?

PJ: Each year we consider some outsidestallions for a handful of our best mares ascommercially they need to be optimised withthe broadest stallion selection available.Sometimes even northern hemisphere optionsare considered. Miss Finland, for example, hasvisited Street Cry twice in recent seasons.Instanding 10 stallions as we do at present it is extremely rare to find a mare that is notlikely to suit even one of them so I don’t findthere are too many limitations for ourbroodmare roster especially considering ourstated plan of continually seeking outcross siresfor a largely Danehill – based generalbroodmare population.

What is a priority when looking at aparticular stallion for a particular mare– pedigree, conformation, etc – whatweighs most heavily on your decision?

PJ: My analysis is concerned primarily withpedigree to begin with. At the matings meetingother considerations such as size, conformation and temperament can beoverlayed in finding the optimal stallionchoice. In some ways it is easier to predictwhich matings are likely to fail as opposed toidentifying those with an excellent chance ofsuccess. As further discoveries are made withreference to the human and equine genomeprojects we are becoming more aware that theblueprint of an animal’s future is indeliblyimprinted in his or her DNA at the moment ofconception. Environment, rearing, feeding, handling and training can help or hinder the

horse greatly but the genetic hand with whichthey have been dealt is what ultimately restrictthem or allow them the potential to become achampion.

STUART RAMSEY,TURANGGA STUD

With so many mares at Turangga canyou explain the process you go throughwhen planning their matings eachseason?

SR: As I do not have a lot of time, I use LaurelOak Bloodstock’s Patrick Brain service toanalyse my mares every few years. ey giveme a list of 30 stallions they believe suit mymares which gives me a shortlist to work with.I then check the pedigrees for crosses and nicksthat I think will produce a winner along withconsidering the commercial appeal theprogeny may have.

Is it a constantly evolving process dependingon results or do you sit down at a specificpoint and do it in one hit?

SR: I work all year round on the pedigrees ofmares to try to breed stakeswinners.

How long does it take you for how manymares?

SR: Some mares are very easy to mate whilewith others it may take months to find theright stallion.

Do you have clients with mares on the farmand if so, what advice do you give them?

SR: I only have a few partners in a couple ofmares and we do not take mares on agistment.

As a farm with only one commercial stallion, what are the differences in planning yourmares’ matings compared to a major stallion farm?

SR: As you can see from the excellent resultsachieved with only a limited number of Zizoufoals we have produced, we only mate mares to stallions we believe have a chance ofproducing a stakes horse. To be successful we need to have a diversification of genetics in our broodmare band.

You do breed to some of the best stallionssuch as Redoute’s Choice. How do you plan a budget for those upper end stallions?

SR: If you are going to breed to the best siresyou only send top class racemares or producersto those stallions.

Do you think the larger stallion farms caterwell to a range of different broodmares theyare trying to attract?

SR: Yes, the stallion farms do a good job. Insaying that, I have never seen them knock backa mare to a stallion.

What is a priority when looking at aparticular stallion for a particular mare –pedigree, conformation, etc – what weighsmost heavily on your decision?

SR: Nicks and crosses that continually producestakes horses.

How important is linebreeding to you? I seeyou have mares with Snippets’ blood you putto Zizou to create linebreeding to Easy Date.Do you send those mares to other stallionscarrying that blood?

SR: Linebreeding is very important to me andwe do send some of the mares that have beento Zizou to other stallions. e Easy Date crossof the Snippets family is now in the rightgeneration and will be one of the mostsuccessful in years to come. It’s a sure fire wayto breed a winner!

Planning Broodmare Matings continued…

GEORGE ALTOMONTE,CORUMBENE STUD

George, you try to keep about 30 to 35mares at Corumbene and I know youconstantly look to upgrade your band ofmares every year. Can you tell me theprocess you go through when planningthe stallions they will visit?

GA: Once the stallion fees are announced bythe farms I complete a one page stallion reportwhich gives me information such as the heightof the stallion, age, service fees for the past fouryears and number of mares covered in thoseyears.e report also indicates stakeswinners-to-foals, stakes wins –to – runners and thirdseason stallions which is important in theselection of the first 50 stallions.

From these 50 stallions I review and selectabout 20 I propose to use and this is done inconjunction with my stud manager Toby Fraserwho does the ground work and advises onstallion type, conformation and type of foals.

Once this is done, I forward this short list ofstallions to three selected trainers and athoroughbred consultant for their independentinput and advice.Aer I receive theircomments I make the final stallion selections.Ithen categorise these stallions in service feerange, from $0 to $24,000, $25,000 to $49,000,$50,000 to $99,000 and $100,000 plus.

Is it a constantly evolving process dependingon results or do you sit down at a specificpoint and do it in one hit?

GA: Once all the information is collated I sitdown to do the matings for all mares over aperiod of two to three weeks. It is a task I haveto do without interruptions so I plan to do iton weekends and the actual time taken wouldbe five or six days to mate 30 to 35 mares.

In addition, during the serving season moretime is needed to re-mate some mares if anoriginally selected sire is injured or notperforming.

Do you have clients with mares on the farmand if so, what advice do you give them?

GA: Yes, we do have a select number of clientswith mares at Corumbene and both TobyFraser and I give advice on matings and othermatters such as the most suitable sales for theprogeny of the mares.

As a farm without a standing stallion whatare the differences in planning your mares’matings compared to a stallion farm?

GA: Being a broodmare farm with no stallionwe are not tied to supporting any one horse.Instead we are free to mate our mares to thosestallions we believe to be the most suitable toproduce good winners.

Do you think the larger stallion farms caterwell to a range of different broodmares theyare trying to attract ?

GA: Around 15 or 20 years ago most stallionswere only given 60 or 70 mares per season butwith advancing equine technology stallionstoday can serve 200 or more mares .I don’tknow how the stallion farms do their matingsbut they would have to support their ownresident stallions and so their selection processwould be more restrictive than mine.

What is a priority when looking at aparticular stallion for a particular mare –pedigree, conformation, etc – what weighsmost heavily on your decision?

GA: I think that service fees are too high forthe current market and this has been a factorin driving out of the industry a lot of smallbreeders with one, two or three mares which Ibelieve has not been good for the industryoverall. In determining the mating, the stallionhas to be commercial with conformation tosuit the particular mare and compatible to themare in size and type in order to produce agood foal.

I place a high importance on the type of foal amare produces in terms of conformation andtemperament. On pedigree the bloodlinecrosses are very important and some do workto produce good winners, which I strive to doat all times.

Overreach scores a great Golden Slipper win for owner/breeder George Altomonte.

Top class new stallionsretiring in 2013

All Too Hard Bay horse – foaled 2009

Standing at Vinery Stud, Scone – FEE $66,000 (inc. gst)

This year’s intake of new sires retiring to NSW studs in numbers seems likely to be well down on last year but the four big namesso far announced are racehorses of the highest class – All Too Hard, Animal Kingdom, Excelebration and Pierro.

Other new stallions in NSW will be covered in the Winter issue of Update.

By Les Young

All Too Hard completed his racing career at Randwick on April 27with a dramatic victory in the Yarraman Park All Aged Stakes(1600m) with the owners subsequently deciding against a trip toRoyal Ascot as his finale. He now retires to Vinery as the earner of$2,288,200.His 12 starts have resulted in seven wins, the last three in a row beingGroup 1s, starting with the C. F. Orr Stakes and then the Futurity Stakesbefore the All Aged Stakes. All Too Hard won his first Group 1 in the spring when he downedPierro in the Caulfield Guineas after that champion had defeated him inthe ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes last autumn. From four appearances at two years last season All Too Hard scoredsuccessive wins in the listed Talindert Stakes (1100m.), the Group 2VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes and ATC Pago Pago Stakes before the ATC

Sires’ Produce while another career highlight was achieved last springwhen All Too Hard was a gallant second to the older Ocean Park in theMVRC W. S. Cox Plate. To date All Too Hard has earned prizemoney of$2,283,000.As far as racing performance is concerned, All Too Hard ticks all theboxes to succeed at stud in Australia but in his case there are excitingbonuses in terms of pedigree and physique.A big, imposing type with great quality, All Too Hard topped the 2011Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney at $1,025,000, seemingly a bigprice at the time for a first crop son of his father, Group 1 winner CasinoPrince. His outstanding physique was certainly a factor but even more was theexcellence of his famous half-sister, unbeaten Black Caviar, recentlyretired after 25 straight wins, 15 at Group 1 level.Out of the Blue Hen producer Helsinge, All Too Hard was rightly keenlysought after as a yearling and just a year after he sold, his Redoute’sChoice half-sister went for more than double, $2.6 million, while thisEaster that filly’s brother sold for a new record price of $5 million.Helsinge, unraced, is also dam of the speedy Moshe, now at stud inVictoria, and is a half-sister to promising sire Magnus out ofScandinavia, winner of the QTC Cup VATC Blue Diamond Prelude anda placegetter in four Group 1 sprints.

2013New SiresAnimal Kingdom (USA) Chestnut horse – foaled 2008

Standing at Arrowfield Stud, Scone – FEE $38,500 (inc. gst)

With Danehill blood dominating Australia’s broodmare population, there is a great need for top class new stallions offering a diversity of bloodlines but lines likely to nick with Danehill.Arrowfield has answered the challenge by securing the exciting Animal Kingdom, brilliant winner in March of the $U.S.10 millionDubai World Cup (2000m.) and two years earlier of the KentuckyDerby (200m).Animal Kingdom is a remarkable and courageous racehorse, overcoming major injuries and being effective from 1700m. on grass, dirt and synthetic surfaces. He is now likely to end his racing career atRoyal Ascot in June before retiring to Arrowfield Stud and will nextyear shuttle to Kentucky. From 11 starts to date, Animal Kingdom has won five races andregistered five seconds at two, three, four and five years to earn

$A8,008,908. Other racing highlights for him were a victory in theGrade 3 Spiral Stakes and seconds in the classic Preakness Stakes, theBreeders’ Cup Mile and the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap, all Grade 1 events.Linebred 4f x 4m to Northern Dancer’s noted sire son Lyphard, AnimalKingdom in looks is typical of horses from his influential male linedescending from champion Blushing Groom. His sire Leroidesanimaux was bred in Brazil but did most of his racingon turf in the USA and became that country’s leading miler, at onestage scoring eight consecutive wins, six in graded stakes with three ofthem Grade 1s (Citation Handicap, Atto Mile by 7¾ len. and Frank E.Kilroe Mile Handicap). He also set two course records and like AnimalKingdom was runner up in a Breeders’ Cup Mile.Leroidesanimaux has so far left nine other stakeswinners including Una Cabeza, a classic winner in Argentina. One of the key pedigreefactors with Leroidesanimaux is that his dam Dissemble, by Ahonoora,is a half-sister to the great producer Hasili, mother of leading UK sireDansili and Group 1 winners Banks Hill, Intercontinental, Heat Hazeand Cacique. There is further valuable diversity in Animal Kingdom’s femalebackground as his stakeswinning dam Dalicia is a daughter ofchampion German sire Acatenango while his third dam Diasprina (by Aspros) was champion two-year-old filly of her year in Germanyand produced 10 winners, three of them stakeswinners and stakesproducers.

New Sires continued…

2013New SiresExcelebration (IRE) Bay horse – foaled 2008

Standing at Coolmore, Jerrys Plains – FEE $27,500 (inc. gst)

Coolmore’s new recruit Excelebration looks an ideal sire prospectfor Australia. He is the best son of Exceed and Excel, Australia’s champion sire oftwo-year-olds this season, and with a Timeform rating of 133 is thehighest rated sprinter/miler ever from the Danehill line which hasdominated here since the 1990s.Excelebration was a three time Group 1 winner and performed withdistinction in Britain, Ireland, France, Germany and in the USA.His career stats show Excelebration raced only 15 times over threeseasons for eight wins, four seconds and one third which earnedconnections more than $A2.57 million. After scoring impressively over 1200m. as a two-year-old at Doncasterhe then repeated the dose later that season at Newmarket in bettercompany. As a three-year-old Excelebration had to play second fiddle to unbeatenFrankel, now rated the greatest horse seen in Europe since World WarII, in three races, the Newbury Greenham Stakes, the Group 1 St.

James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot (third) and in the Group 1 QueenElizabeth Stakes but was just as superior to other contemporaries whenFrankel was not there to oppose him, taking the German TwoThousand Guineas by seven lengths, the Newbury Hungerford Stakesby six lengths then finally getting a well deserved first Group 1 in the1600m. Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.Excelebration had a change of ownership, leaving original trainerMarco Botti to wage his four-year-old campaign under the guidance ofAidan O’Brien who produced him at the Curragh in April, 2012 for animpressive first up victory in the 1400m. Group 3 Gladness Stakes. It was then decided that Excelebration would challenge Frankel again inthe Group 1 Newbury Lockinge Stakes a month later but the superstarlived up to his 147 Timeform rating to defeat Exceed and Excel’s son byfive lengths. Frankel proved even more superior when the two met forthe fifth and final time in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at the RoyalAscot meeting in June where Excelebration again finished second. With no Frankel to oppose him, Excelebration then captured twocompetitive 1600m. Group 1s, the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauvilleand the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot before finishing acommendable fourth at his final appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Mileat Santa Anita.A horse which acted on all types of going, Excelebration is one of 71stakeswinners by Exceed and Excel whose other stars include Helmet,Overreach, Guelph and Reward For Effort and may well be Australia’soverall champion sire for 2012/13.His dam Sun Shower, by the good sire Indian Ridge, has also producedmultiple UK stakeswinner Mull of Killough.Third dam Sarah Siddons won both the Yorkshire Oaks and Irish OneThousand Guineas, was runner up in two other Group 1s and bredIrish Oaks winner Princess Pati.

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2013 21

New Sires continued

2013New SiresPierro Bay horse – foaled 2009

Standing at Coolmore, Jerrys Plains – FEE $77,000 (inc. gst)

Lonhro’s champion son Pierro should become a great sire if hepasses on his own speed, courage and racing class and going toCoolmore gives him the best possible chance.

Given his pedigree, the speed and precocity displayed by Pierro wassomething of a surprise as he breezed through his juvenile seasonundefeated in six starts.

He began in the early spring by taking the time honoured ATCBreeders’ Plate (1000m) then reappeared in the autumn by capturingthe Silver Slipper Stakes, Todman Stakes, Golden Slipper (1200m), ATCSires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and Champagne Stakes (1600m).

Taking the Sydney Triple Crown for two-year-olds (Golden Slipper,Sires’ Produce, Champagne Stakes) makes Pierro unique as the onlyhorse to do so since the distance of the Champagne was increased from1200m. to 1600m. Baguette had achieved the same treble back in 1970.

Pierro resumed racing as an early spring three-year-old by winning theRun For The Roses at Rosehill Gardens before a Melbourne campaign. After taking the 1600m. Moonee Valley Stakes, he had a tough run inthe MRC Caulfield Guineas and suffered his first defeat when All TooHard overpowered him close to home then he stepped up in distance to2040m., finishing a good third to Ocean Park and All Too Hard in theW. S. Cox Plate.

Pierro’s autumn campaign as a three-year-old in 2013 consisted of justfour races for a win in the ATC Hobartville Stakes against his own agebefore typically tough victories against older rivals in the CanterburyStakes and George Ryder Stakes. At his final start he was a gallantsecond under handicap conditions in the Doncaster, giving 4kg. to thewinner on a very wet track.

All 11 of Pierro’s wins were in black type events and five were in Group1s. He retires with earnings of $4,536,650.

Pierro’s sire Lonhro is well remembered as a champion racehorse, 11 ofhis 26 wins coming in Group 1 contests and his sire, Octagonal, too,was an outstanding racehorse and the best son of the great Zabeel so welook to Pierro to take the male dynasty to even greater heights.

Miss Right Note, Pierro’s dam, is by European champion Daylami andhas the rare distinction of winning races at Randwick and at Chantillyin France. She is a half-sister to Octagonal’s best European runnerLaverock, champion older horse in Italy in 2006 and a Group 1 winnerin Italy and France. Pierro’s third dam Criquette (by Shirley Heights)was a listed stakeswinner in Britain and produced stakeswinners FlyingCloud and Captain Webb.
