Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Happy Clapper (Teofilo), three-year-old Royal Symphony (Domesday), Hardham (Redoute’s Choice) and Seaburge (Sebring) will also take their place in the weight-for-age race.

Two internationals, Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 2025m) winner Folkswood (Exceed And Excel) and the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Kaspersky (Footstepsinthesand), were also paid up for the Cox Plate yesterday.

Weir’s racing manager Jeremy Rogers told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that Gailo Chop and Humidor were being aimed at the Melbourne Cup but would need to perform well in the Cox Plate

to warrant running in the 7 November race.

Gailo Chop, who is owned by OTI Racing’s syndicate managed by Terry Henderson, won the 2015 Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) for French trainer Antoine de Watrigant having finished eighth to Winx in that year’s Cox Plate.

Rogers said a tilt at the Melbourne Cup was possible for Gailo Chop, who is stabled at Weir’s Warrnambool stable,

rather than attempting to win his second Mackinnon Stakes, now run two weeks after the Cox Plate.

“He has done well since the Caulfield Stakes and hopefully he can run second (to Winx) on Saturday,” Rogers said.

“I think the owners are keen to head towards the Melbourne Cup all going well but he has to run top three in the Cox Plate to qualify for the race. He is a nice relaxed horse and he gives every indication that he will handle (the 3200 metres of the Melbourne Cup).”

Gailo Chop will be ridden by Mark Zahra in this year’s race from barrier four.

Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Humidor’s Melbourne Cup claims will also go on the line in the Cox Plate with the blinkers on.

The former New Zealand-trained five-year-old, who won the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) in the autumn, raced close to a fast tempo in the Caulfield Cup, which was won by outsider Boom Time (Flying Spur).

Rogers said Humidor had returned to Warrnambool since his Caulfield Cup run and that the Cox Plate had always been on the radar for the gelding.

Yesterday, Humidor was given some jumping over nine hurdles at Warrnambool, convincing the stable to continue with the horse’s campaign.

“Darren has always had the Cox Plate on the back up as an option for Humidor and after the Caulfield Cup we don’t really know where we are at with him,” he said.

Wednesday 25 October 2017 | 3 |Weir to use Cox Plate as key Melbourne Cup lead up

“He’s pulled up well, so he will run and if he performs well he’ll head to the Melbourne Cup, but if he doesn’t then we will send him out for a spell.”

Blake Shinn will ride Humidor in the Cox Plate, replacing his regular jockey, the suspended Damian Lane.

Meanwhile, Winx completed her main gallop for the week, working on the Moonee Valley circuit yesterday with regular jockey Hugh Bowman in the saddle on the StrathAyr surface.

Winx ran 1:22.77 seconds for the final 1200 metres of the work out, with her last 400 metres clocked in 23.86 seconds.

“It was what we wanted to see, most of her work is now done of course, we are into grand finals week and we are just making sure the team is happy and everything is going to plan,” Waller said at Moonee Valley.

“Ahead of a Cox Plate I could not be any happier and my jockey Hugh Bowman has the exact same feeling with the horse,” said Waller after the track gallop.

“The beauty of Winx is that she makes our job so much easier, she is an absolute professional, what you see on race day is what we see every day of the week with her. It is an absolute privilege to be part of her career.”

Winx and stablemate Egg Tart (Sebring) galloped separately at Moonee Valley yesterday, with Bowman partnering Winx in a work out

“She was very strong and she is very well. She is a very focused individual, very determined and a pleasure to deal with,” Bowman said.

Trainer Tony McEvoy is hoping to cause an upset with Royal Symphony and deliver him his second Cox Plate, having prepared Fields Of Omagh (Rubiton) to win the race in 2003. The horse also won the race in 2006 for trainer David Hayes.

Barrier three for Vega MagicManikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) favourite Vega Magic (Lope De Vega) will jump from barrier three in the $1,000,000 sprint at Moonee Valley on Friday night. Second favourite, Newcastle-trained mare In Her Time (Time Thief), will start alongside him in two, while Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) and Malaguerra (Magnus) come out of gates ten and 11 respectively. The Lindsay Park-trained Vega Magic finished second in the $10,000,000 The Everest on 14 October. "He was very unlucky in The Everest, just from the wide barrier," co-trainer Ben Hayes said.

"The way he pulled up after The Everest, we're thrilled with him."

Valley gallop for In Her TimeIn Her Time, who won the Sydney Stakes (registered as City Tatts Lightning Stakes) (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick on 14 October, had her first look at Moonee Valley yesterday. The Ben Smith-trained mare, who tackles the Manikato Stakes on Friday, was partnered by Corey Brown in the gallop. "She apparently played up a little bit in the stalls when they first arrived and Ben was a bit iffy about working her," Brown said. "But she galloped really, really well. She got on her right leg and she's just a lovely horse. She's in the right frame of mind

and she's going well. She had no troubles at all with the track." Hey Doc works wellTrainer Tony McEvoy is pleased with the way Group One winner Hey Doc (Duporth) has freshened up since his run in the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and believes barrier nine will suit him in Friday’s Manikato Stakes. The four-year-old, who won the Aurie’s Star Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) on 12 August, ran tenth in the Makybe Diva Stakes on 16 September, his third run back from a spell. “He was sharp (yesterday morning in a Moonee Valley gallop). He loves the Valley and is unbeaten here and I asked Luke (Currie) to give him a bit of work just for his lungs and he needed that,” McEvoy told Racing.com.

Viddora improved since MoirLuckless A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) runner-up Viddora (I Am Invincible), trained in Adelaide by Lloyd Kennewell, will again be attempting to upstage her more fancied rivals in the Manikato Stakes. The talented five-year-old mare was a $31 chance when beaten a nose by She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) in the Moir Stakes and is an $18 chance on Friday night at Moonee Valley. "I think she's come on nicely, her coat's definitely changed," Kennewell told Racing.com. "It's right there now - she's at her peak which is good. You want to be at your peak for a weight-for-age 1200 metres, it'll be a strong race. She'll be right there, she just needs a little bit of luck in the run."

Blinkers to go on SpiethOnce considered a straight-track specialist, Spieth (Thorn Park) will wear blinkers in the Manikato Stakes, with trainer Bryce Heys believing the tight-turning track will suit the five-year-old stallion. Hong Kong-based jockey Nash Rawiller is flying in to take the ride,

replacing Corey Brown on Spieth, who drew barrier five in the field of 11. Placed in last year’s Darley Classic (registered as VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington, Spieth disappointed when eighth in the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at the same track last start on 7 October.

Impending skips ManikatoTrainer James Cummings has decided to bypass the Manikato Stakes with Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1350m) winner Impending (Lonhro) after galloping at Moonee Valley early yesterday. The four-year-old stallion was runner-up when resuming in the Sydney Stakes on 14 October and was entered for Friday’s Manikato Stakes, but Cummings instead will run Impending in the Darley Classic at Flemington on 11 November. Click here to view the Manikato Stakes acceptances.

Sense Of Occasion to Kennedy MileGroup One winner Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense) was not among the acceptances for

the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), with trainer Kris Lees instead electing to target the Kennedy Mile (registered as Cantala Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on 4 November. Sense Of Occasion, who galloped at Moonee Valley yesterday, has been unplaced in two starts at Randwick in September. "I think it's a better option for him," Lees said. "I think the gap between runs, coming back to a mile, and a big track at Flemington will suit him.”

Single Bullet off to ValleySingle Bullet (Not A Single Doubt), who was scratched from last week’s Brian Crowley Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick due to a wet track, will have his first start in Victoria at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The Gary Portelli-trained three-year-old colt, who won the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) as a juvenile, is nominated for the Telstra Phonewords Stakes (registered as Red Anchor Stakes) (Gr 3, 1200m). He has finished runner-up at both starts this campaign in Sydney, beaten on both occasions by the James Cummings-trained Viridine (Poet’s Voice).

Faroe ready for Inglis BannerThe unraced Tony McEvoy-trained two-year-old filly Faroe (Rothesay) is set to have her first start in Saturday’s Inglis Banner (RL, 1000m) at Moonee Valley after she galloped at the track yesterday. The Rothesay (Fastnet Rock) filly, who was purchased by McEvoy Mitchell Racing for $100,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, is one of 12 juveniles entered for the $250,000 race. Faroe galloped with well-performed three-year-old stablemate Roomooz (Fastnet Rock) at Moonee Valley yesterday.

Vase test for Cliff’s EdgeThree-year-old colt Cliff’s Edge (Canford Cliffs), a winner of Saturday’s Caulfield Classic (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield, will need to run well in the Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m) to press on to the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m). A winner of four of his eight starts, Cliff’s Edge is yet to prove in his work or races to trainer Darren Weir that he will be capable of running out the Victoria Derby distance next week. Mark Zahra will ride Cliff’s Edge in the Moonee Valley Vase, replacing the suspended John Allen.

Grey Lion to atone in Geelong CupBallarat trainer Matt Cumani is hoping six-year-old stallion Grey Lion (Galileo) can go one better in today’s Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) after finishing runner-up in last year’s $300,000 race. Grey Lion, who will be ridden by Luke Nolen, led before tiring late to finish third in the Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 2025m) on 15 October, his fourth run back from a spell. "Last start we just sent him out to the front," Cumani said. "It was to trick him up as if he's there alone or with one other horse and then maybe he'll think he's at home and just keep working under the urgings of the jockey. It was a great effort at Cranbourne. He just had to use himself up a little bit early on and that maybe paid a little bit at the end." Click here to view the Geelong acceptances.

Fastnet Tempest set for Sale CupJockey Michael Walker is delighted with the condition of international raider Fastnet Tempest (Fastnet Rock) ahead of the gelding’s

tilt at the Sale Cup (Listed, 1600m). Walker partnered the William Haggas-trained runner in a workout at Werribee yesterday and said the horse gave him a good feel ahead of the $200,000 race on Sunday. "He's a really, really nice horse and the first thing I noticed when I arrived here this morning - he looks a million dollars," Walker told Racing.com. "His coat is really good. You can see all the other imports walking around and you don't even have to be someone who really knows about horses to know which horse looks the best.” Click here to view the Sale nominations.

Williams to ride Wall Of Fire in Melbourne CupCraig Williams has been booked to ride the Hugo Palmer-trained Wall Of Fire (Canford Cliffs) in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on 7 November. Williams had originally been set to ride the injured Admire Deus (Admire Don), but after working Wall Of Fire and Tiberian (Tiberius Caesar) yesterday, Palmer tweeted that Williams had agreed to partner his runner. “Delighted to confirm that Wall of Fire will be ridden by Craig Williams in the Melbourne Cup after the pair cantered together today,” Palmer said via Twitter.

Mask Of Time cleared of injuryMeanwhile, Hugo Palmer’s other international raider Mask Of Time (Holy Roman Emperor) has been cleared of serious injury after he appeared to break down during exercise at Werribee yesterday. However, scans revealed no issue and the four-year-old trotted up sound and has been given the go-ahead to continue on with his spring campaign. "It is positive news, the stable vet has been down [to Werribee] and x-rayed the horse," Racing Victoria international scout Leigh Jordon told Racing.com. "There are no issues there, he even trotted up sound before which is great.”

Vet test for Ventura StormGroup One winner Ventura Storm (Zoffany) will undergo a vet inspection in the days leading up to the Melbourne Cup after Lindsay Park reported he has suffered bruising to his off-fore heel. Ventura Storm ran a disappointing 13th in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) on Saturday,

and the stable reported he had a foot abscess coming out of the race. There remains some bruising which will be checked over by Racing Victoria vets before a decision is made on his participation at Flemington.

33 first acceptances for Victoria DerbySpring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Ace High (High Chaparral) is one of 33 three-year-olds who were among the first acceptors for the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m). The David Payne-trained colt is joined by Norman Robinson Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) runner-up Tangled (Snitzel) and the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained stablemates Sully (Reliable Man), Main Stage (Reliable Man), Salsamor (Tavistock), Johnny Vinko (Savabeel) and Beachwood (Ocean Park). The in-form Lindsay Park stable has Justice Faith (Hinchinbrook) and Eshtiraak (Street Cry) among the first acceptances.

Sully to go into Derby without another runThe Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained Sully, who ran third last start in the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick on 7 October, will not race again before the Victoria Derby. The three-year-old gelding, who was placed behind Royal Symphony (Domesday) at Flemington as a two-year-old, has won twice from six starts including his last start Group One placing and fourth in the Gloaming Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at Rosehill on 23 September. Click here to view the Victoria Derby first acceptances.

Pinot among 26 fillies paid up for VRC OaksA total of 26 three-year-old fillies feature among the first acceptances for the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington on 9 November, including impressive last start Ethereal Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) winner Pinot (Pierro). The Aaron Purcell-trained Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Aloisia (Azamour) also features among the first acceptances for the $1,000,000 race, while Tony McEvoy could be represented by Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Bring Me Roses (High Chaparral). 25 in contention for Darley ClassicThe Darley Classic (registered as the VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) has attracted a potentially top-class field, with 25 sprinters still in contention for the $1,000,000 race at Flemington on 11 November. Among the first acceptances are champion sprinter Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago), The Everest (1200m) first and second Redzel (Snitzel) and Vega Magic (Lope De Vega) and last year’s winner Malaguerra (Magnus). Click here to view the first acceptances for the Darley Classic.

Myer back on for I Am A StarMyer Classic (registered as Empire Rose Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) winner I Am A Star (I Am Invincible) will attempt to win the race for the second year in a row after recovering from a back complaint. The Shane Nichols-trained four-year-old mare, who won the Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley on 29 September, pulled up sore when last in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) on 14 October. I Am A Star galloped at Mornington yesterday, pleasing Nichols enough to press ahead with a plan to run in the Myer Classic on 4 November.

Drop in class for TakedownWinterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Takedown (Stratum) is set to run in the $100,000 Filante Handicap (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday. The Gary Moore-trained five-year-old, who has been handicapped with 63 kilograms, will be ridden by in-form apprentice jockey Lee Magorrian, who claims three kilograms. Takedown ran tenth in the Sydney Stakes last start having also been beaten by In Her Time in the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on 30 September.

Salsonic to resume at RandwickQueensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Salsonic (Hinchinbrook) will resume in the Filante Handicap, his first start since the Group Two success on 10 June. The Jason Coyle-trained gelding is being aimed at the Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick in December. “He’s never been a flash track

worker. He’s always been a pass mark on the track and he hasn’t changed much there,” Coyle said. “He can stargaze a little bit so I think we’ll only know how the trip has seasoned him for this preparation by how he reacts race day.” Click here to view Saturday’s Randwick weights.

Trapeze Artist ready for CoolmoreGolden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) has recovered from a setback which saw the Gerald Ryan-trained three-year-old miss the Sydney Stakes. The Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt competed in a Rosehill jump out yesterday, with his action reportedly pleasing the trainer and jockey Tye Angland. Trapeze Artist is now set to take his place in next week’s Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on 4 November.

Pride’s pair to step up at Warwick FarmImproving four-year-olds Sikhing Glory (Sepoy) and So Spirited (So You Think) will spearhead local trainer Joe Pride’s attack on the Warwick Farm meeting in Sydney today. Sikhing Glory, who has won his past two starts at Kembla Grange and Gosford respectively, steps up to metropolitan grade in a Benchmark 70 Handicap (1000m). “He’s just taken to mature and settle down a little bit and now we’re seeing the benefits now of being pretty patient with him,” Pride said. So Spirited, who was runner up in a Benchmark 65 Handicap (1350m) at Wyong last start, tackles a Benchmark 74 Handicap (1400m). Click here to view the Warwick Farm acceptances.

Saint Patricks Day to run at DoombenEagle Farm trainer Chris Munce is hoping for a drier surface at Doomben on Saturday so his stakes-winning three-year-old Saint Patricks Day (Excelebration) can make his spring return. Saint Patricks Day, who won the Dalrello Stakes (Listed, 1200m) as a two-year-old, is entered for a Class Six Plate (1200m) against older horses and a three-year-old handicap (1050m). He was scratched from last Saturday’s Doomben meeting due to the heavy surface, a meeting

which was subsequently abandoned. “At this stage he will go around in a three-year-old race or the Class Six on Saturday. There is still plenty of time to get him ready for the summer and Magic Millions carnivals,” Munce said. Click here to view Saturday’s Doomben weights.

Choisir filly wins Warwick Farm trialA Choisir (Danehill Dancer) filly trained by Gary Portelli, two-year-old Secret Lady, yesterday won heat six against her own age and sex in a Warwick Farm barrier trial over 801 metres. Purchased by Aquis Farm, Blue Sky Bloodstock and Portelli for $150,000 at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale from the Gold Front Thoroughbreds draft, Secret Lady led throughout to win by three lengths over the Luke Hilton-trained Mornay (Unencumbered) who made up ground after missing the start.

Animal Kingdom colt impresses in trialThe second of the two-year-old barrier trials held at Warwick Farm yesterday was won by the James Cummings-trained Rheingau (Animal Kingdom), one of four Godolphin-owned juveniles in the heat for colts and geldings. Taking part in heat seven over 801 metres, Rheingau was ridden by Brenton Avdulla to settle fourth before sprinting home well to win by half a length over the Mark Newnham-trained Sneak Preview (Smart Missile) in 49 seconds. Rheingau’s stablemate Dynamited (Exceed And Excel) ran third. Click here to view the Warwick Farm barrier trial replays.

Magic Millions Clockwise Classic trial heldThe Matt Cumani-trained juvenile Akkadian (Nicconi), who ran fifth in the Maribyrnong Trial (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington on 7 October, yesterday won a Ballarat jump out in the clockwise direction. The 800 metres jump out, which saw five two-year-olds take part, is for Magic Millions yearling sale graduates to prepare for the Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic (1000m) at Ballarat on 25 November. Akkadian ran 52.08 seconds in the heat with Jordan Childs in the saddle. Click here to view the jump out replay.

McDonald attempts to have betting ban overturnedJockey James McDonald has faced a Sydney court to again challenge an 18-month disqualification for betting on a horse he was riding. Godolphin Australia’s former retained jockey has lost two appeals against the severity of the ban after admitting he placed a $1,000 bet on his mount Astern (Medaglia d’Oro) in December 2015. His lawyer, Bret Walker SC, told the NSW Supreme Court yesterday that Racing NSW stewards made an error in taking into account the mandatory minimum disqualification period when ‘special circumstances’ applied to McDonald. Justice Nigel Rein said he would hand down his decision within four weeks.

Pateman-trained horse tests positive to cobaltThe Steven Pateman-trained Sir Walter Scott (Galileo) has returned an elevated reading to the prohibited substance cobalt in a pre-race test taken at Coleraine on 24 September this year. The Geelong-based trainer, who also holds a jumps jockey’s licence, ran Sir Walter Scott in the Great Western Steeplechase (3200m), a race in which jockey Rob David was dislodged. Racing Analytical Services Limited (RASL) confirmed the cobalt reading was greater than 200 micrograms per litre of urine. Racing Victoria (RV) stewards are continuing their investigation after a second test confirmed the high reading to cobalt.

Victorian trainer Dunn’s horse also tests positive to cobaltTatura trainer Belinda Dunn’s horse Margot’s Boy (Turffontein) has also returned an elevated reading to the prohibited substance cobalt, RV stewards announced yesterday. The post-race reading was detected after the gelding won a Benchmark 58 Handicap (1980m) at Tatura on 23 September this year. RASL’s confirmatory report found Margot’s Boy’s elevated reading to cobalt was more than 200 micrograms per litre of urine. RV stewards are continuing their investigation into the positive test.

Tavistock date on cards for Consensus

Group One-winning mare Consensus (Postponed) will be trained towards a defence of her Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) crown on Boxing Day and is also due to be covered by Cambridge Stud-based stallion Tavistock (Montjeu), trainer Stephen McKee has revealed. “She’ll definitely be going to the Zabeel and at some stage she is going to be served by Tavistock,” McKee said. “She’ll run again in the (OMF Stakes) on Melbourne Cup day at Ellerslie. We’ll then give her one more run before the Zabeel.”

McKee sets plan for Hasahalo and Star TreasureMcKee has also outlined plans for Hasahalo (Savabeel) and Star Treasure (Lonhro). Group Three winner Hasahalo is likely to tackle the Soliloquy Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday, though a decision on Group One placegetter Star Treasure’s participation in next month’s New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) has yet to be made. “(Hasahalo) is nominated for the Soliloquy Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday,” he said. “It’s disappointing that we haven’t been able to get (Star Treasure) on a good track to know exactly where we are so I’ve left it up to the owners.”

Trainer delighted with Endean RoseRotorua-based trainer Iain Kennedy was delighted with Endean Rose’s (Savabeel) third in the Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) on Sunday. Connections of the seven-year-old mare are likely to map out stakes targets for the remainder of the season, with the OMF Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) and Zabeel Classic likely to be on her agenda.

“We were hoping to get in the top six, it looked pretty tough and ambitious but she did us proud,” Kennedy said. “We’ll sit down and look at all the options now. We’re enjoying racing her for now and she’ll definitely be put in foal next year.”

Savvy Dreams back in trainingCo-trainer Grant Cullen has said that Group One-placed four-year-old mare Savvy Dreams (Savabeel) is back in work and is likely to make her return to the track in December. “She’s been back in work for a month or so now and she’s really strengthened up and looking great,” said Cullen, who trains with Guy Lowry. “She’ll probably kick off at Hastings in December and we’ll make some firm plans after that, there are some nice races for her during the Wellington Cup carnival.”

White filly born by Mongolian Khan

A white filly by Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor) was born at Windsor Park Stud early yesterday morning. The foal, who is out of the white Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare The Opera House, was born at 3am New Zealand time on Tuesday. “A lovely Mongolian Khan filly arrived at 3am and both mother and daughter are doing very well,” studmaster Rodney Schick said. Multiple Group One winner Mongolian Khan is standing for a fee of NZ$10,000 (plus GST).

Dubai aim for TorcedorTrainer Jessica Harrington is considering a tilt at the Dubai Gold Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) next March for the Te Akau-raced Torcedor (Fastnet Rock). The five-year-old was run down close home by Order Of St George (Galileo) when second in the British Champions Long Distance Cup (Gr 2, 2m) four days ago, and Harrington has been delighted with his progress this year. "He ran a great race (at Ascot) and that's him done for the year,” Harrington said. "We'll aim him towards the two mile race on Dubai World Cup night in March, that's the plan. He's had a great season, going up over a stone in the ratings, and we look forward to next year with him."

Ghostzapper filly tops Fasig-Tipton openerA filly by Ghostzapper (Awesome Again) topped the opening session the Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale on Monday when selling to Jay Em Ess Stable for US$275,000 from the draft of Legacy Bloodstock, acting as agent. Catalogued as Lot 96, the filly is from the family of stakes winners Silent Bird (Summer Bird)

and A Brilliant Idea (Afleet Alex). "Ghostzapper can get a good filly," Samantha Siegel of Jay Em Ess told Bloodhorse.com. "As they say, she ticked all the boxes. Nowadays, you have to pay a decent amount of money for a good horse.”

Figures down at opening sessionFigures at the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale saw a decline on 12 months ago. Fasig-Tipton reported that 230 yearlings grossed US$6,479,500, compared with total receipts of US$8,306,400 for 246 sold during last year's first session. The session average of US$28,172 represented a 16.6 per cent decline from the US$33,766 figure a year ago and the session median was down 21.6 per cent from US$12,750 to US$10,000. "It's too early to tell much," Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning Jr told Bloodhorse.com. "I don't really know the mix of the composition of day one, two, or three this year, so I'm not going to make any dramatic statements about the marketplace.” Click here to view the sale results.

Darley have announced covering fees for their European-based stallions, with

multiple Group One-winning miler Ribchester (Iffraaj) to join the Darley at Kildangan Stud in Ireland for an introductory fee of €30,000.

The Richard Fahey-trained four-year-old won four times at the highest level, including the Queen

Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot in June, and he was last sighted running second in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Ascot on Saturday.

The colt could have his final career start in the US$2,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) at Del Mar on 4 November, with trainer Richard Fahey due to make a decision in the coming days.

"I've spoken to Joe (Osborne, Godolphin chief executive) who has spoken to the boss (Sheikh Mohammed). Basically, they're leaving the decision (on the Breeders' Cup) to me and I'm leaving it to the horse,” Fahey said.

Ribchester will be joined at Kildangan Stud by the recently retired Group One-winning sprinter Profitable (Invincible Spirit), who will stand for a fee of €12,000, while multiple Group One winner Postponed (Dubawi), who was retired from racing earlier this year, will stand his first season at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket for a fee of £20,000.

The former Roger Varian-trained stallion will stand alongside his father, Darley’s linchpin stallion Dubawi (Dubai Millennium), who will again stand for a fee of £250,000 at Dalham Hall Stud.

Dubawi has sired 143 stakes winners in total and 33 individual Group One winners, while he currently sits in third place in the general sires standings by earnings in Great Britain, behind Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) and Dark Angel (Acclamation), with £2,791,659 in prize money.

Champion three-year-old Golden Horn (Cape Cross), whose victories included the Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m), will again stand for £60,000, while Haunui Farm-shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic) will stand for an increased fee of £40,000.

Meanwhile, reverse shuttle sires Exceed And Excel (Danehill) (€50,000) and Epaulette (Commands) (€7,000) will stand for unchanged fees at Kildangan Stud, though Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) will stand 2018 for a fee of £7,000 in England, down from £10,000.

Darley shuttlers Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) and The Last Lion (Choisir) will stand for fees of £15,000 and €7,500, down from €25,000 and €12,000 respectively, while former shuttle sire Poet’s Voice (Dubawi) has also been cut to £6,000 from £8,000.

Z ac Purton hopes he can take advantage of rival Joao Moreira’s absence and make a move towards the top of the jockeys’

championship with a strong book of rides at Happy Valley this evening, most notably Starlight (Red Element) in the Class Three Perfect Gear Handicap (1200m) and Winwin Ruby (Pluck) in the Class Three Dordenma Handicap (1650m).

Purton sits second in the riders’ title race with 19 wins, five adrift of three-time Champion Jockey Moreira. However, with the Brazilian sitting on the sidelines for the next two meetings through suspension, Purton is hoping to bridge that margin.

“It has been good to get a few wins recently,” Purton, who has ridden doubles at the last three meetings, said at Sha Tin on Tuesday morning. “I’ve had a lot of seconds and a lot of bad barriers to deal with as well, so I’m happy with how I’ve gone so far. I’m due for some good

gates and hopefully they come quickly. I’m not far away.”

Both Starlight and Winwin Ruby are among those who have drawn well for the Australian rider on Wednesday night, each drawing gate two in their respective races.

Starlight (131lb) enters the Perfect Gear Handicap as a winner of three of his last four races, all over the Happy Valley 1200 metres. He now finds himself as top weight in the Class Three contest, but Purton believes he is capable of winning once again.

“Obviously, he’s going very well,” Purton said. “He’s in good form, he’s drawn a nice gate so he’s going to get a nice run again. I don’t think it’s all over for him yet – he’s found another suitable race. If the tempo is there to suit, there’s no reason that he can’t continue on his way.”

Starlight first debuted in June 2016, but it was not until May 2017 that he scored his first win, just as he was on the brink of dropping into

By Andrew Hawkins @anz_news

Purton has Moreira’s championship lead in sight at Happy Valley

Class Five. Now, he is potentially looking at a rise into Class Two should he win again – and Purton says the Red Element (Red Ransom) gelding is typical of many horses in Hong Kong.

“So many of them, they just take a while to acclimatise and settle in,” he said. “Starlight had always shown that he had Class Three ability early on, but he was just a little immature and weak. As he’s strengthened up with time and wrapped his head around racing a little more, he’s put it together. Hopefully, he can win again.”

Starlight meets 11 rivals in the nightcap, including last-start winner Good Companion (Exceed And Excel), course and distance specialists Master Viking (Mastercraftsman) and Back In Black (Murtajill), and Happy Happy Star (O’Reilly), who gets the blinkers for the first time at his Happy Valley debut.

The Class Three Perfect Gear Handicap will jump at 10.50pm (Hong Kong time).

A race earlier, Purton will be legged aboard Winwin Ruby, who makes his first start at the city track on Wednesday night. The Pluck (More Than Ready) four-year-old has finished second at his two outings this season, both over the Sha Tin 1600 metres.

“He is going well, but he just keeps finding one better than him,” Purton said. “With the slightly weaker opposition at Happy Valley and a good gate, it might just be the difference between winning and finishing second.

“You’d think he’d be the type suited by Happy Valley, especially now that he’s jumping well and putting himself in the right spot. That’s a big asset at Happy Valley, and fortunately he’s come up with the gate to take advantage and do that.”

Winwin Ruby faces 11 opponents in the Class 3 Dordenma Handicap, the seventh of eight races on Wednesday night with a scheduled jump time of 10.15pm.

The opener, the Class Three Billion Handicap (2200m), will kick off the card at 7.15pm.

The thing about champions is that the odds are too short for most of us, including owners, to back them. Steve speaks to Peter Tighe, co-

owner of champion mare Winx (Street Cry). Peter Tighe says he hasn’t bet on Winx in

any of her past 20-odd starts. Not even when she was a now very alluring $5 into $4.60 in the 2015 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). She’s started odds-on in each of her 16 wins since that first Cox Plate success.

“I backed Preferment at the better odds, not Winx,” Tighe concedes. In his defence, Tighe’s Magic Bloodstock also had an ownership interest in Preferment (Zabeel) who was coming off wins in the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) and Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). Even Hughie Bowman agonised over which horse he would ride.

That, of course, was before Winx was Winx. She won by four and three quarter lengths in course record time. Preferment was ninth, beaten almost 13 lengths.

“Winx keeps winning and I keep losing on the punt. That’s the way it’s gone. The story for most punters I guess,” he said.

Tighe prefers, again like most punters, to look for a bit of value so there’s little attraction in the odds offered against Winx winning. Notwithstanding the TAB, this week, reported one bet of $106,500 at $1.15 on Winx. That would return, by the way, a profit of $15,975.

The Brisbane-based Tighe, who has extensive interests in fruit and vegetable wholesale, import and export, did at least back Winx when she won at her first start at Warwick Farm in June 2014. Not that there was a massive push for her.

“Chris (Waller) had another one in the race named Lucy’s Look and it was well backed but Winx settled back and ran over the top of them. I remember the caller Mark Shean saying something like ‘that was a good win and she looks a very promising filly.”

“But even then we didn’t think much more of her than to hope we might have one good enough to win on a Saturday in town. That first win was a midweek meeting. Chris had never said we had a star on our hands after an early jump out or trial but he’s not one for that. He wants to see than do it raceday. We’d joked about her being really good before she’d raced but we didn’t really know,” he said.

Tighe races the great mare in partnership with Debbie Kepitis and Richard Treweeke. The connection between Tighe and Kepitis, the daughter of Bob Ingham, came via Tighe’s Queensland trainer Alan Bailey and Sydney trainer Kevin Moses who’d been helped by Bailey.

“That was ten years ago and Kevin’s wife Jenny put together an all-girl syndicate to race a horse… so she was a bit of a pioneer in that regard. The syndicate included Debbie (Kepitis)

and my wife Patty and the horse was called Perchance (Falvelon) and he chalked up a lot of seconds before he broke through in a maiden worth $100,000 at Eagle Farm. So, perchance that’s how it began,” he said.

Tighe did not attend a Cox Plate until 2011 when Pinker Pinker (Reset) won. “That was at Debbie’s invitation. I’d always watched the race of course and often imagined what it would be like to be there. Not sure I’d imagined what it would be like to win the race,” he said.

Tighe admits that dual Cox Plate winner Sunline (Desert Sun), the mare so often rated against Winx, was his ‘favourite’ during the time he watched the race from afar. “She was very good to me on the punt,” he says of Sunline.

Not that it’s all about the punt but it was imprinted for Tighe, as it was for many of us from an early age, by our fathers - in his case, Kevin. “Dad was a pretty avid punter,” he says.

Kepitis’ clearest first recall of the Cox Plate was Octagonal (Zabeel), in 1995, winning in the cerise silks of father Bob and his late brother Jack. “We were at a wedding and my husband

Paul had the radio earpiece fed up under his suit so we could know what was going on.

“With the family we had the disappointment of Lonhro (by Octagonal) not quite handling the Valley track but then exactly 20 years after Octagonal, Winx comes out and wins her first so that was special. It’s the race you want to win, the race for the purists,” she said. Lonhro rarely failed. He won 26 of 35 starts but was beaten in the Cox Plates of 2002 and 2003.

Royal Ascot is also ‘racing for the purists’ and Tighe perhaps offered the tiniest of hints that that is strongly on the Winx agenda. “I’ve never been to Royal Ascot. One day for sure, hopefully next year,” he said. He did have a taste of international racing with Preferment running seventh in the 2015 Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m).

The racing journey began for Tighe with a horse called Franciscan Magic (Our Horizon) 22 years ago. “We had a half share in him and he cost $6,000. He won four races with Alan Bailey and won enough for us to buy a few more so were hooked from the word go and I’ll be

racing horses long after Winx has gone from the track,” he said.

As to the experience of racing the horse who is arguably the world’s best? “It’s enjoyable. It’s fantastic really, not nerve-wracking. You can’t get let it get to you or overplay it. Just enjoy it for what it is. It’s the old story that you will meet the same people on the way down as on the way up,” he said.

Tighe doesn’t ‘overplay’ it. “Why did you choose gate six,” he was asked at the Cox Plate barrier draw. “I just did what I was told,” he said with a glance to jockey Bowman. “In this whole thing, I just do as I’m told.”

Of Australia’s elite Group One races, the one many experts consider the hardest to win is the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m).

To capture this most demanding of distance handicaps usually run at breakneck speed, a horse needs to stay every bit of 2400 metres plus have the speed and agility to navigate the tricky Caulfield circuit.

The 2017 race last Saturday was the 140th renewal and while the winner Boom Time (Flying Spur) was an outsider in the betting his performance and that of his jockey Cory Parish were both full of merit, as was the effort of runner-up Single Gaze (Not A Single Doubt), two of only six Australian-breds in the field of 17.

Official Stud Book records credit West Australian Kim Loxton as the breeder of Boom Time but the six-year-old entire was conceived and reared in NSW and, like Single Gaze, is by an Arrowfield Stud-based Danehill-line sire with both matings designed to produce sprinters rather than stayers.

Kim Loxton offered the attractively related Boom Time at the 2013 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale but decided to race the horse himself when the colt failed to meet the $80,000 reserve placed on him.

Boom Time began his racing career in Perth showing unexpected early signs of being best suited over longer distances, winning the Melvista Stakes (Listed, 2200m) in March 2015 before finishing third in the WATC Derby (Gr

2, 2400m), after which the owner sent him to trainer David Hayes in Victoria, but it was not long before a bowed tendon forced the horse out of competition for more than 12 months.

The son of Flying Spur (Danehill) recovered well from this often career-ending injury and when he returned to the track in October 2016, he quickly bounced back to form, winning three successive races in Melbourne and in February this year he added to his record the Mornington Cup Prelude (Listed, 2000m) at Caulfield.

After Boom Time failed badly on a bog track in the 2017 ATC Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in April, owner Kim Loxton ran into financial difficulties which forced him to sell his horses and David Hayes then took over ownership of the horse with the happiest of results.

Boom Time is the 13th Group One winner among 99 stakes winners to date for Flying Spur, Australia’s champion sire of the 2005-2006 season, who was retired from stud duties in 2012.

The source of Boom Time’s stamina is something of a mystery as his dam Bit Of A Ride (Snippets) is by a noted speed influence and when racing in NSW and Western Australia did not win beyond 1400 metres.

Bit Of A Ride (Snippets), now in different ownership, does come from a brilliantly successful family but from six other foals to race, most by proven sires, her stud record with Boom Time excluded could be described as disappointing.

Go back a few generations and you do find Group Two winner Muirfield Village (Exit Five B) who displayed some Classic stamina with seconds in the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

Bit Of A Ride is bred on similar lines to another more prominent member of her family, blue hen producer Scandinavia (Snippets), whose seven winners are headed by top-class, Group One-winning sprinter Magnus (Flying Spur), now a very successful sire and bred on similar lines to Boom Time, as imported Love Song (Warpath) is third dam of both.

While Magnus really boosted the family it received even greater acclaim from the racing deeds of two foals left by his half-sister Helsinge (Desert Sun), renowned as the dam of unbeaten superstar Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) and All Too Hard (Casino Prince), now showing much promise as a sire at Vinery Stud in NSW.

Unusually, Love Song was bred in Denmark where she won the Danish Oaks (2400m) and in nearby Sweden was second in the Swedish Oaks (2400m) so perhaps she can take some credit for Boom Time’s seemingly surprising stamina. David Hains of Kingston Town (Bletchingly) and Kingston Rule (Secretariat) fame imported Love Song to Australia in the name of his company Commercial & Rural Estates Pty Ltd in 1980 and he could not have imagined the extent of her subsequent contribution to Australian breeding.

Boom Time has quite a high powered pedigree to qualify him for a place at stud with three crosses of Northern Dancer (Nearctic), four of that great sire’s dam Natalma (Native Dancer) plus six lines of Nasrullah (Nearco).

VERDICT This uncompetitive event provides GORGEOUS AGAIN with agood opportunity to add to his haul of four wins at Sha Tin this

year. Recent evidence suggests Danny Shum’s 5yo is on a fairly tough mark now, buthe’s fancied to have too much tactical speed for Ensuring, who was placed on hisstable debut this month but has become rather one-paced and is on a long losingrun.

VERDICT The might still be a bit more to come from PremiumChampion, who has won two of his last three starts, but THE

JAZZ displayed a decent jolt of improvement when a staying-on third over 1m here afortnight ago and there’s a good chance he’ll be suited by the extra furlong today. Hegets the nod. Cloud Nine and Happy Rocky are also considered after goodrecent efforts.

VERDICT Caspar Fownes’ 7yo PEACE COMBINATION is on a lengthylosing run but has been in fairly good form this season and, from

a favourable draw, he gets the vote in what looks an open race. Junzi was a C&Dwinner on his seasonal debut and has some scope to build on that performance.Richcity Fortune has left it late in the day for his first ever 5f run but showed goodspeed when placed over 6f a fortnight ago. Sparkling Talent is raised in classtoday but has won his last two over C&D. Lyric Ace also gets a mention.

VERDICT Good cases can be made for a handful of these but it’s hard toget away from EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE, who is unexposed after

only four starts and appeared to have a bit left in the tank when making all over C&Dthree weeks ago. Second choice is Manful Star, who also has low mileage and gotoff the mark when last in action. Planet Star, Happy Fiery Dragon andMultigogo are others with possibilities.

VERDICT It’s easy to make the case for Speedy Wally, who has been inexcellent form over C&D this season, but the suggestion is

NEVER BETTER. Paul O’Sullivan’s 6yo wasn’t at his best when last in action but isusually very consistent and can capitalise on some help from the handicapper if achange of headgear has a positive effect. Unique Happiest and Happy AndHealthy are others to consider.

VERDICT This may be fought out by DR WIN WIN and Winwin Ruby.Slight preference is for the former who has only had two runs for

his current trainer and gave a very good account when second over C&D a fortnightago. All eight of Winwin Ruby’s Hong Kong starts have been at Sha Tin but both runsthis season and have very creditable and he’ll be a tough nut to crack if effective onthe sharper track here.

by the handicapper since his latest success and could be worth opposing withGRACE HEART, who has run well in defeat on both outings this season andbenefits from Matthew Poon’s very valuable 7lb claim this time. Happy Happy Staris next on the list.
