RACING REVIEW

PINNACLES LOVES THE BEACHdays.” trainer George Daly said following the win.

After he commenced well, King had the gelding in a rearward position, but in the straighthe some how found room and booted him to the line just ahead of Local Legend. “I wasthinking at the top of the straight how I was going to tell Paul he was sacked, then atthe 200m I though well this has been a good ride and then when I won it was a terrificride.” a delighted Daly added.

The five-year-old does his best racing at Belmont and he also likes to be riddencold.“This is his track, just like myself, we love Belmont.” Daly said.

It was oh so close for the connections of Local Legend who looked to have the racewon as he shot three lengths clear at the top of the straight but just faded to last 50m.Royal Lott motored home from near last to nail Local Legend for second in a deceptivefinish with the ever consistent Field Commander running fourth.

Favourite for the race Oroya Gold seemed to have every chance in running but he coulddo no more in the straight. The Scenic gelding has been knocking on the door for blacktype success but he just can’t seem to crack it at this stage.

Trainer Rick Hore-Lacy used the Redoute's Choice formula to encourage gutsy gal-loper Pinnacles to victory in the Glasshouse Handicap on Saturday, writes GrantStockwell, Hore-Lacy used the beach as a vital piece of preparation when he trainedthe mighty Redoute's Choice to win the 1999 Blue Diamond Stakes and the astuteVictorian drew up a similar plan for Pinnacles in the past three weeks.

"Before I moved to Caulfield from Epsom the beach was a vital part of my training,"Hore-Lacy said. “It used to five minutes away, now it's more than an hour to get thereand back. This horse has had a tough campaign and he needed to go to the beachsince he's been in Brisbane to freshen him."

While Hore-Lacy is Pinnacles' trainer, the multiple Group One-winning horseman wasmore than happy to give the accolades to young Brisbane trainer John Fleming."Johnhas done all the work with this horse in the past few weeks, he's taken him to the beachevery day and he deserves a lot of the credit for this win," Hore-Lacy said.

Pinnacles produced a huge form turnaround to win after he finished 17th in theStradbroke Handicap at his previous start and winning jockey Danny Nikolic was thegelding's ninth rider in as many starts.

But the lack of familiarity proved no hurdle for Nikolic and the gun hoop broughtPinnacles with a well-timed run down the centre of the track to score a half-neck winover Cocktail Supreme with the unlucky Alverta a half-neck back in third.Alverta workedhard to cross from barrier 15 before she settled in third behind the leader but her riderGlyn Schofield was reluctant to blame the wide draw for the mare's defeat. "She feltgood in the run, there was no early speed and she didn't do any extra work to get over,"Schofield said."She travelled kindly and gave me a really good kick when I asked herto go in the straight. I felt if the race had have been a furlong (200m) further she wouldhave kicked back and beaten the winner."

Both pinnacles and Alverta were foaled at Arrowfield, bred in partnership by Arrowfieldwith Alan jones’s Belford productions and Gainsborough Stud. Pinnacles advanced hisrecord to seven wins from 21 starts for earnings of $527,170.

COHORT A NAMETO REMEMBER

The fans on course at Belmont onSaturday witnessed a special per-formance from up and coming three-year-old Cohort, when he came with ablistering run to win the Dayana Plate, writes Matt Nowland.

The Scenic three-year-old was tug-ging for more rein out of the straightthe first time around, but his rider PaulHarvey then put him to sleep on thefence. When he went to make hismove at around the 550m mark hefound himself stuck in a pocket and hecouldn’t get moving when he wantedto.

Punters who took the short quotewould have torn their tickets up onstraightening as he had lost allmomentum and was third last underthe stick.

But Cohort and Harvey where not tobe denied, as Brave Knight ran to thelead, Harvey then began to get stuckright into Cohort with the whip in theleft hand and once he gained fullsteam, he went on to over power hisopposition and record an astonishingwin.

“That was a super effort. He wasn’tentitled to win after he suffered thatcheck at the top of the straight. He isa class horse and we will now pushonto the Belmont Classic.” Winningtrainer Ivan Haggerty said followingthe win.

The run of the second placed BraveKnight was a much better effortfrom his previous form when hewound up in second position.Apprentice Duncan Miller rode theFasliyev gelding and he seems tohave the key to him, having riddenhim six times for two wins, two sec-onds a third and a fourth.

Second favourite Roman Time battledin the run to the line and he didn’tseem to handle the 2000m distance.

HONG KONG SATURDAY

SINGAPORE FRIDAY

BIGMAVERICK WINS AGAIN

Big Maverick is well on his way to making a cleansweep of theSingapore Three-Year-Old Challenge after he powered to an

impressive win in the second leg worth $350,000 on Friday night, three weeks after he claimed the first, writes Michael Lee.

The smart Laurie Laxon-trained galloper left no doubt as to whois currently the best three-year-old in the land when he producedan amazing acceleration to treat his 14 rivals with utter contemptinside the last furlong of the 1400m event. The Hornet ran upsecond best 2 1/2 lengths away.

The start of the race did however give his jockey Saimee Jumaatsome concerns when Prince Valour got stirred up and brokethrough his stalls, two gates inside of him. Big Maverick, whohimself is inclined to bouts of nervousness, surprised his riderwhen he stood still despite the commotion and was actually thefirst to begin.

“I was a little worried when we were in the gates when PrinceValour played up,” said Saimee. “Usually he is one of the last toload, but we were in there for a while tonight, but he stood therequietly with all the action going on around him and actually wasthe first to jump.

“I was able to be in a position where I wanted to be throughoutthe race. When he went to the front he did it under his steam.

It was not however long before Dream Lad shot to the lead in adaring bid to win the second leg second-up after running a cred-itable second in the first leg. One of Big Maverick’s three stable-mates, Dylan tracked up the leader on the outside, followed inclose attendance by Cristoforo while Big Maverick who startedas the even-money favourite had the ideal slipstream in fifth withplenty of cover.

The running order did not change much as the leading trio held

sway to the home turn, but the chips were soon down whenSaimee angled his mount for a clear run upon straightening.

While it was Dylan who drew first blood by taking over the leadand going great guns on the fence, Saimee had not moved amuscle on Big Maverick, who still coasted effortlessly ahead tolevel up with his stablemate.

The duel was only fleeting as Big Maverick bounded away assoon as Saimee gave him his head to score running away in1min 22.5secs. The Hornet flew in from the ruck to claim secondspot by a nose from a very brave Dylan. “I did think I got theretoo soon, but I put one around his backside to make him concen-trate,” said Saimee. “He is a serious horse.”

Laxon was suitably impressed with his charge but the championtrainer also had kind words for his other runners.

“He’s getting stronger and stronger this horse. The mile of thelast leg will suit him as I think his dam (Afjan) ran third in the 1000Guineas (1600m) in England,” said Laxon of his new superstar.“He’s right on target for the third leg, but I was also very pleasedwith Ace Amigo and Dylan’s run.”

Ace Amigo after being hopelessly trapped wide for most of thetrip boxed on well to run fourth only 2 1/2 lengths behind the win-ner. Dylan also gave his trainer plenty to rejoice with his third, after racing handy from the start.

“I think Dylan should line up for the 1600m leg as well. He onlyweakened a little towards the end today,” said Laxon.

Jockey Gavin McKeon, who was aboard runner-up The Hornet,is also chomping at the bit at the prospect of turning the tables inthe last leg. “I was following Big Maverick throughout,” saidMcKeon. “I did think about trying to come out earlier, but I was

on his back and travelling well. It was just that he sprinted tooquickly for me. Hopefully when we get up to the mile it will be adifferent story.”

Big Maverick, a son of O'Reilly out of the Woodman mare Ajfanhas now chalked up more than $640,000 in prizemoney for theChampagne Stable.

Another shrewd spot by father and astute horseman Kevinseems to have handed trainer Stephen Gray yet another >>smart horse in his yard. Imperial Green, a three-year-old son ofSenor Pete, caught the eye of Gray senior after running secondin a jumpout in New Zealand. A trainer in his own right himself,Gray, who often supplies some of his son’s cattle, was straight tothe phone and unselfishly recommended the Kranji-based Grayto snap him up.

“He ran second to the horse who went on to win the NewZealand Derby, C’est La Guerre,” said Gray after Imperial Greenscored his second win from only four starts in the $55,000 Class4 race (1600m) on Friday night.

“I’m glad for the owner Anthony (Ng) who is a first-time owner. Iwas recently introduced to him and he immediately put his trustin me to find a new horse for him.

“He paid good money for this one. He also has another two-year-

old by Van Nistelrooy with me.”

“Stephen is a very good trainer. I left it to him to find me a goodhorse and he was spot-on,” said Ng who races the promisingyoungster under the SH banner.Punted down to short-priced favouritism at $9, Imperial Greenwas given a peach of a ride by jockey Robbie Fradd, who neverpanicked when tearaway leader Prior King seemed to scootclear at an unabated rate at the top of the straight.

“He’s got such an amazing turn of foot. He was chasing Eric allthe time but once he got there, he just slacked off,” said Fradd.

Considering he still thumped his rivals by 3 ? lengths, ImperialGreen can only leave to the imagination how far he can go andcertainly has Gray eyeing off bigger prizes.

“I would love him to run in the third leg of the Three-Year-OldChallenge but we’ll have to see how he pulls up first,” said Gray. The 1600m race is due to be run on July 27.

“I skipped the second leg because he’s still very young and I did-n’t think he was ready for such a race.

“I will have to discuss with Robbie if he will stay on the horse, should he line up before I make a final decision.”

Rob Hulls called on the Opposition to "get rid" of ShadowRacing Minister Denis Napthine as he responded to allega-

tions made against Dayle Brown, writes Adrian Dunn, HeraldSun.

Hulls, the Victorian Racing Minister, last night said the real issuewas not the integrity of the RVL, but the integrity of Napthine, who in parliament on Wednesday said Brown, the newly appoint-ed Racing Victoria Ltd manager of integrity services, shouldnever have been appointed given his association in 1994 withPaul Pavlovski, a person later convicted on a drug charge.

Napthine said in parliament that Brown had received $30,000from a Paul Pavlovski to find his estranged wife. Brown said hedid not receive any money.

During a heated exchange in parliament Friday night, Hulls saidOpposition Leader Ted Baillieu should investigate Napthine inlight of accusations levelled at him yesterday in a letter fromVoitin Walker Davis, solicitors acting for Brown.

In its letter, Voitin Walker Davis state Napthine's allegations are"as false as they are malicious" and a "continuation of a publiccampaign aimed at a character assignation" of Brown. Hullschallenged Napthine to repeat the accusations about Brown out-side parliament or apologise to him.

"The challenge is for him to walk outside this place and make thesame allegations and then get a writ and have allegations testedin an independent court of law," Hulls said. "My guess is that hedoesn't have the guts to do it. If he's so sure of his facts, that's

all he has to do, but he doesn't have the guts. He's using cow-ard's castle to indeed not only defame people, but to talk theindustry down."

Despite some media reports to the contrary, industry leadersoffered no support for Thoroughbred Racing Owners'Association chairman David Moodie's declaration there was aconsensus among stake and shareholders for RVL chairmanMichael Duffy to be sacked over the Brown appointment.

John-Paul Blandthorn, racing organiser of the AWU, which has3000 members in the racing industry, lambasted Moodie andgave his complete support to Duffy and his board. "Our view isthat David Moodie's position at TROA is almost untenable. Henow has made so many poor comments about RVL that it makesit hard for legitimate TROA issues to be heard," Blandthorn said.

Australian Trainers' Association committeeman and prominenttrainer Colin Little, along with high-profile owner TerryHenderson, labelled calls for Duffy's sacking as disgraceful. Littlesaid Duffy was a passionate and committed racing man whoseintegrity was beyond reproach. Little said Duffy and the new RVLboard were being unfairly taken to task by Moodie.

"The chairman's been in the job five minutes and the new boardthree minutes," Little said. “It is disgraceful for TROA to be call-ing for the sacking of one of the most passionate and respectedfigures in Melbourne racing. I have utmost confidence in him."

Henderson described the recent string of personal attacks onkey RVL players as despicable.
