trip itinerary - 8 daysMar 29, 2018: Overnight FlightDepart from the USA. Mar 30, 2018: RomeAfter meeting your ACIS Tour Manager and settling in to your hotel at the heart of bustling, historic Rome, practice your language skills by ordering una coppa gelato and enjoy people-watching in one of the city’s stunning piazzas. (D)Mar 31, 2018: RomeRome is called “The Eternal City” because the ancient Romans believed that no matter what empires rose and fell, Rome would endure forever. Today’s panoramic drive of the city is a great introduction to the many phases of Roman history. Our local expert accompanies you through the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica, giving commentary via personal headsets. The best part is that these are timed reservations, meaning you’ll breeze right by the long lines facing other tourists. In the afternoon, you’ll go inside the iconic and historic Colosseum with a local guide (another line-avoiding timed reservation) and learn the many stories of this nearly 2,000-year-old Roman landmark that’s considered one of the architectural wonders of the ancient world. Your ticket also includes entrance to the nearby Roman Forum if your group has time. Tonight, enjoy a pizza dinner the way it is meant to be: authentic and Roman. We finish the day by introducing you to the fine art of the Italian passeggiata with an evening stroll to Piazza Navona. (B,D)Apr 1, 2018: RomeDiscover more of the Eternal City at your own pace today. Maybe savor a rich caffe espresso before setting off to explore some of Rome’s more eclectic attractions, such as the Caravaggio paintings on display in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi or Appia Antica park, which encompasses part of the original Appian Way, built in early 300 B.C. Or you may decide to take an optional excursion to the ancient city of Pompeii, whose ruins were preserved as its inhabitants perished under a blizzard of volcanic ash when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. For tonight’s passeggiata, you may wish to venture out to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. (B,D)Apr 2, 2018: MadridBoard a flight from Rome to Madrid, Spain’s bustling capital city in the center of the country. Get up to speed on Madrid’s most iconic plazas and elegant boulevards on an afternoon walk. Later, you’re free to explore more of this culturally rich city at your own pace, perhaps savoring traditional tapas, roaming through bustling open markets like the Mercado de Maravillas or visiting under-the-radar attractions such as the Museo Lazaro Galdiano, home to an amazing private collection of Spanish art and jewelry. (B,D)

Apr 3, 2018: MadridMadrid’s rich heritage comes alive on your guided sightseeing tour of the plazas and diverse architecture of modern-day Madrid. Highlights include the Plaza de España with its statue of Don Quixote, the majestic Alcalá Gate, and the famous bullring Las Ventas. Then visit the magnificent Prado (skipping the lines with a timed reservation), one of the world’s premier art museums. Here, an expert provides illuminating commentary via personal headsets on the artwork of Velázquez, Goya, Raphael, Rubens, and Bosch. Even the 18th-century Neo-Classical building that houses the collection is stunning. Later you may opt to discover your musical muse during a master class in the fine art of flamenco dancing, an important Spanish cultural tradition. In the evening, dine like a true madrileño and sample traditional Spanish delicacies during an ACIS-designed tapas evening. You’ll try different local specialties as you sidle up next to the locals for whom this is a culturally important and typical way to spend an evening. Classic tapas dishes include items such as tortilla española, patatas bravas, bacalao, cheeses, olives or jamón. (B,D)Apr 4, 2018: MadridDiscover more of Madrid’s museums and parks at your own speed today. Don’t miss the impressive Royal Palace, the official residence of Spain’s royal family. Or you may opt to take a full-day excursion to nearby Toledo, the city where the world-famous artist El Greco made his home and created his most famous works. Toledo offers a rich mix of cultures, thanks to a unique blend of Christian, Jewish and Muslim heritages. The excursion includes lunch at a breathtaking spot with a panoramic view over the city. (B,D)Apr 5, 2018: DepartureDepart for the USA. Optional Extensions and Extra Nights: Enhance your European experience with a two-night extension to Paris via flight from Madrid, including sightseeing and a visit to the Louvre. (B)

This is a preliminary itinerary for your group.
