AROUND BALI

K12-I.61-14

WHEN you’re a guest at InterCon nental Bali Resort, you might be surprised at how many elements of the Balinese culture you can find within the hotel and its gardens. A good example of this is the kul-kul,a tradi onal communica on system in the form of a wooden bell posi oned at the top of a tower.

There are two kul-kul bell towers at InterCon -nental Bali Resort, the most prominent of which can be seen at the entrance, located to the le hand side when viewed from the lobby. Every kul-kul tower is a me-honoured feature of Balinese architecture, hospitality and daily life, and each of the kul-kultowers at InterCon nental Bali Resort is designed to blend seamlessly with the classic architectural design of the buildings.

Inseparable from the cultural and religious life of the local communi es, the kul-kul plays a significant role in the everyday lives of the Balinese Hindu people. Every village temple and every banjar (tradi onal vil-lage council) has its own kul-kul, which is usually hung within an open-sided pavilion standing upon four pillars and sheltered by a roof. The split bell is cra ed from selected hardwoods such as jackfruit or the wood of an orange tree. Occasionally a kul-kul might be made from bamboo but this is only for temporary use. The pavilion (locally known as the bale kul-kul – ‘a place where the wooden bell is hung’) is o en placed on a square-shaped tower constructed of sandstone and brick. From here, the sound can be heard over a wide area and will immediately a ract a en on.

The beat of the kul-kul in the temple indicates the start and end of formal ceremonies, while various other rhythms – referred to as tabuh – are used by the banjar to signal different events such as the no fica-

on of a marriage or a passing, a signal for help in the case of an emergency such as a house fire, or no fica-

on of community mee ngs. The temple kul-kul is also used by a number of tradi onal Balinese organiza ons such as the penabuh (gamelan musicians), pecalang(village security) and subak (rice farmers associa on), as well as some temporary organiza ons.

The various beats must be made to sound differ-ent and typical for each organiza on so that members will understand for whom the bell is being tolled. In fact, even chickens and ducks have been known to respond to the sound of the kul-kul, which might be beaten daily by the farmer, and always with the same pa ern of sound, to indicate feeding me. For most events, the kul-kul is sounded in two or three rounds, star ng with a slow frequency that then becomes faster, before slowing down again.

This ancient and highly effec ve method of com-munica on has changed very li le over the years. Despite the presence of the telephone, TV and radio, internet and mobile phones, the kul-kul is s ll the most effec ve method of making an announcement or summoning the members of a village.

InterCon nental Bali Resort captures the spirit of Bali through its landscaping, architecture, interior design, artwork and guest ac vi es. Much of the architecture, including the kul-kul towers, is based on tradi onal Balinese principles, u lizing local materials and incorpora ng the essen al elements of Balinese Hindu philosophy and symbolism. The artwork, meanwhile, is a fascina ng collec on of intricately carved statuary, bas-relief tableaux, plaques and panels drawn from the natural and mythical world of the Balinese heritage. Not only is this an excep onal luxury resort, it is also a pla orm from which guests can explore the local culture through a wide choice of ac vi es and experiences ranging from Balinese cooking classes to gamelan music lessons, Balinese dance performances, temple visits, market and village tours, Balinese massage, tradi onal spa therapies, and the delicious local cuisine. “WE are proud that since the opening of Matahari Beach Resort & Spa in 1995 we have been work-ing with local cra smen, so that our guests could have a feel of the rich cultural heritage of Bali. For example all the carvings you see at the hotel are made by local ar sts.”

The same is true for all our vege-tables and fruits. These are produced by local farmers in a tradi onal way, making use of the best the soil and climate Bali has to offer.

The mountainous region around Bedugul with its fer le volcanic grounds is home to rich coffee plan-ta ons, cloves and fruit trees. Along the northern coastal strip you’ll find some of the finest strains of the original Bali rice.

And you may be surprised, but grapes grow here close to our resort as well, introduced by

the Dutch in the hope of producing wine, an am-bi on finally fulfilled by Ha en wines. Try them at lunch or dinner and you’ll be surprised of the

quality. Their Tunjung Brut Spar-kling has in 2014 even won the silver medal in Cannes ( France).

For the vegetables and fruits we are working with the enthu-sias c farmers Mr. Putu Adi and Mr. Wayan Sarma. They have their farms high in the mountains near Bedugul.

Their tradi onal and organic (e.g. as fer lizer they use the rice skin) way of cul va ng their products have resulted in the most tasteful vegetables, fruits and herbs which they deliver daily to our kitchen.

When you have become curi-ous about our farmers and all what

the north of Bali has to offer, we are happy to organize a tour with a visit to the farms. BT-Newspaper/matahari newsle er

Chinese New Year at Golden LotusYear of the Goat begins February 19, 2015

Year of Goat comes into its own February 19, 2015 and will last un l February 8, 2016. GONG XI FA CAI.

“We have a special Chinese New Year celebra on at Golden Lotus Chinese Restau-rant featuring Special Shows to celebrate the Year of the Goat on Wednesday, 18th of

February we present a Chinese Barong Sai show during dinner and on Thursday, 19th of February we present a Chinese Duo. Both shows begin at 7.00pm.”

Siwaratri Day at THE 1O1 Bali LegianCeremonies and ac vi es

Siwaratri starts with an opening ceremony of prayers and offerings which is performed at the ‘kawi-tan’, the family ’s house temple. This preliminary ceremony should be finished before daybreak and is at 6am followed by: Monabra-ta - silence, not speaking for a period of 12 hours; Upa-wasa - fas ng, not ea ng or drinking during 24 hours;Mejagra - medita on, not sleeping during 36 hours.

Each of these (non)-ac vi es are methods to learn to be self-conscious at all mes, to have self control in all circumstances. When finished each of them is closed with prayers and offerings in the house temple.

The spiritual symbolismThe ceremonies and ac vi es of Siwaratri

day should remind people to always be spiritu-ally conscious while facing the ups and downs of physical life, to always be aware of the fact one is an incarnated soul. More o en than not one tends to forget the true essence of one’s being in the dynamic turmoil of physical life with its emo onal inclina ons of urges, tempta ons and desires.

Fas ng is a method to reach self-control in respect with not to be selfish and greedy.Silence is a method to learn one should never speak impulsively but instead to carefully weigh one’s words before reac ng to one’s experi-ences in life, to always speak fair and honest words, to never lie, slander, speak evil or swear. Not sleeping, staying awake, is a method to learn to be always ‘awake’, meaning aware of one’s approach of physical life, which should

be done with a conduct of insight and wisdom.Siwaratri is always celebrated on the day

before ‘Tilem Sasih Kepitu’, the new moon of the 7th month of the Balinese Calendar. At The 1O1 Bali Legian, the Parahyangan Agenda, Siwalatri day was a ended by representa ve from Management and Hindu Commi ee.

The ritual was started from 06.00 am on the morning of Monday (19/1), for Puja Trisandya up to the next morning on Tuesday (20/1). Beside Parahyangan ac vi es inside of the Hotel, The 1O1 Bali Legian team also celebra ng the Siwalatri by visi ng the nearby Sad Kahyangan Temple in Badung Region, Pura Luhur Griya Tanah Kilap, Pura Luhur Candi Nar-mada and a ending Pujawali (temple fes ve) at Pura Campuan Windu Segara at Padang Galak.

BOISTEROUS sounds of cymbals fused with the lion dance leap making a parade in welcoming the celebra on of Chinese New Year 2556 falling on 19 February 2015. The parade star ng around 4:30 p.m. presented 217 par-

cipants from 9 con ngents, where they were consis ng of 8 con ngents from Bali and one con ngent from Gorontalo, North Sulawesi. There was also a collabora on of lion dance and barong ket.

“We are the Golden Lion troupe as the representa ve of Amurva Bhumi Shrine, Blah-batuh, Gianyar,” said Dennis Tania Wijaya, 13, to reporters a er the performance in front of the Bajra Sandhi Monument at Renon.

This girl of Chinese descent came together with 30 colleagues, ranging from elementary to junior high school students. They brought two lion dances and a dragon. Dennis said, though having trained since a year ago with her partners, she was s ll experiencing some difficul es. “It happened when jumping and dancing the head with eyes and mouth. We should have physical exercise, especially the legs must be flexible,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Lion Dance of Pusaka Tantra Kuta also wanted to show off its agility. The troupe came with a total of 40 personnel with a lion and a dragon. One of the members, Panca Sendiawan, said that his party had used to making performance and exercise regularly for the past 2 years.

Lion Dance (China) and Barong Ket (Bali) made collabora on at

Renon, Denpasar, Sunday (Feb 1). This fes val is associated with

the celebra on of Chinese New Year 2556 in Bali.

According to the Coordinator of the Lion Dance Parade, Made Hadi Saputra, the inaugural event en tled the Celebra on of Chinese New Year Lion Dance Parade 2566/2015 was a mo-ment to preserve cultural roots, especially Chinese culture. In addi on, the parade was also intended to unify the young Balinese and Chinese.

“To that end, we include the Balinese Barong Ket, so that there is an accultura on of Balinese and Chinese element,” he said on the sidelines of the event which took place for 2 hours.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Lion Dance Sport Federa on (FOBI) for the tenure of 2015-1016, Dahlan Iskan, also enliv-ened the lion dance parade. He par cipated in coming down the field and parade with the lion dance team. “It’s very interes ng, moreover it is the first performance ahead of the Lunar New Year,” he said.

This former Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) expected the lion dance parade would con nue to survive. Moreover, there had been no interna onal lion dance compe on in Bali. Besides, Dahlan also ap-preciated the collabora on between the lion dance and the barong ket. “It is really fi ed, when I was in Aceh there was also collabora on with Saman Dance. Foreigners Spend their Holidays in Bali:

Learning Balinese Culture

IT IS a common thing if foreigners spend their holiday in Bali only for shopping, enjoying night life entertainments in café or restaurant, and sightseeing. Some mes foreigners who spend their holidays in Bali need to experience the difference by learning Balinese culture, ge ng more informa on about Balinese tra-di on, and ge ng involved in doing Balinese people’s daily ac vi es. When the guests stay at Grand Istana Rama Hotel, we will guarantee for long-las ng impression during their vaca-

on in Bali. The guests will not only get the

usual memory of their vaca on by photographs in the hotel, enjoying the beach and souvenirs that have no impression and emo on inside, but the guests will also experience free cultural ac vi es in par cular.

A er finishing my study at Petra Chris-an University Surabaya major in Hospitality

Management, I decided to move to Bali in 2010. I started my career in Bali as a Market-ing Communica ons Execu ve at Grand Istana Rama Hotel in December 2010. As a Marke ng Communica ons Execu ve, I have been establishing Free Cultural Ac vi es for

our guests. The unique and dynamic culture of Bali should be well maintained by tourism business people. The ac vi es that we conduct are; Bahasa Indonesia Lesson, Coconut Climb-ing Show and Canang Decora on Class, Bali Dance Class, Balinese Costume Photo Session, and Cooking Class. We deliver a simple lesson of Bahasa Indonesia. The simple lesson is given by our professional staff, then a er that, as the advantage, the guests will be more confident to make a deal or nego ate directly with art market vendor if they want to purchase souve-nirs. Then we introduce Balinese culture with Coconut Climbing Show and Canang Decora on Class. Since a long me ago, Balinese people use the benefits of coconut trees for living. The benefits of coconut trees are the coconut fruits for making coconut milk and making charcoal to be the heater for tradi onal clothes iron. The young coconut leaves, as one of the materials, for making Canang sari, Kwangen and Paku pipit to become the offerings for God. Grand Istana Rama staff will demonstrate how to climb a coconut tree and then the guests will learn how to make Canang sari, Kwangen, and Paku pipit. Also there will be Bali Dance Class and Balinese Costume Photo Session so our guests can learn the simple movement of Balinese Dance and take pictures with Balinese tradi onal clothes. In the Cooking Class, we invite the guests to be emo onally involved, star ng from visi ng the tradi onal market to purchase the ingredients, and go back to hotel to cook together with our professional chef.

There is a very basic principle which is used by Balinese people as guidance in living their life, called “Tri Hita Karana” (Three causes of happiness). Tri Hita Karana consists of Para-hyangan (Harmonious rela onship between God and human), Palemahan (Harmonious rela onship between human and environ-ment) and Pawongan (Harmonious rela onship

between humans). Tri Hita Karana is intensely implemented in our hotel, we always maintain our garden and trees, conduct beach cleaning as reflec on of Palemahan aspect. Pawongan is shown by concrete measures, where our management establishes coopera on with Sangeh Village to provide guidance to learn English and as human beings, we need to be aware of the children that need helps, care and love, as the children le in the orphanage with no parents to care for them. So we visit them regularly and donate some money, daily needs, toys, t-shirt to make them happy. Then, in Parahyangan, our management shows best effort and great a en on to maintain temple and places of worship in the hotel area and also conduct Piodalan ac vity. It can’t be denied that the implementa on of Tri Hita Karana is supported by all of Grand Istana Rama Hotel staffs. I’m very proud to become part of Grand Istana Rama Hotel’s team.

I have been working at Grand Istana Rama Hotel since 2010. Then, I was promoted as an Assistant Marke ng Manager in 2012 and now, I’m in charge as a Sales and Marke ng Manager at Grand Istana Rama Hotel. I believe with my skills, knowledge, experiences, and through these cultural ac vi es, I will give contribu ons to preserve Balinese tradi on and Balinese cul-ture in this global tourism development era. As The 2nd Favorite Winner of Sympathe c Public Rela ons Tri Hita Karana, I keep con nuing to socialize Tri Hita Karana to all staff, hotel guests, and to public through media and also consis-tently implement the concept of THK in her daily life and in her work at Grand Istana Rama Hotel. “Hold 2nd favorite winner is an amazing achievement. It also will make me con nuously keep the values of Balinese culture, con nue to socialize Tri Hita Karana to the society and support the program of Tri Hita Karana,” said Bianca. *) The 2nd favorite winner of PR THK 2014 from the Grand Istana Rama Hotel

According to subdistrict head of Kuta, Gede Rai Wijaya, the cleanup ac-

On that account, its sanita on should be well maintained for the convenience of travelers and taking ac on to clean up the beach or the environment should be done on the agreed schedules, he said.

The concern for the beach of Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and other beaches in Bali was not only the responsibility of local community or lifeguard, beach traders or hoteliers along the coast, but also the industry running the business in Bali as stated by I Gede Made Suas ka, the Coordinator of the Beach Cleanup on Kuta Beach. According to him, Kuta Beach as an asset of Bali tourism, it was normal when the natural phenomenon of marine de-bris came from the sea should be addressed together.

THE HAVEN Bali Seminyak supports orphanage children at Bala Keselamatan (The Salva on Army) located in Denpasar Bali. Last December, the management held a Charity Cocktail Event as part of the fes ve event on 22 December 2014. Many guests a ended

this event and supported the event by giving dona on. The Charity Cocktail Event is conducted to show apprecia on and support to the local community especial for local orphanage children. The Salva on

Army commenced in Indonesia (Java) in 1894. It then extended to Ambon, Bali, East Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Sumatra, East Nusa Teng-gara, Aceh and Papua. The magnitude of the number of children

and poor adults in Indonesia who are vulnerable to abuse and being trafficked has led The Salva on Army to begin this service. Mr. Ary

Setyo Wibowo and Ms. Komang represented the orphanage in receiving the dona on handed by Mr. Joan Casadevall, General Manager and Mr. Wayan Karta, Financial Controller. We believe our dona on will be used to improve the lives of this orphanage

IF YOU like coffee, you’ll love Kiadan Pelaga. The li le village in the highlands holds a special place in Bali’s coffee history; this is where the magic bean was first grown on the island.

Today, 750 villagers live and work here, with coffee s ll the primary source of income. But the locals are diversifying, realising coffee-chugging Westerners will be happy to get some dirt on their shoes to see where the magic bean comes from and get a taste of village life along with a cup of the bi er bean.

So for coffee-lovers, Kiadan Pelaga, 1100m above sea level, is a treat. Locals will show you around on a day excursion or you can book in for a night or two and get a fuller immersion into village life.

The accommoda on is basic, but that’s part of the charm. The villagers plant robusta beans for their own coffee consump on, while the more fiddly arabica trees

provide the beans they grind and roast for sale.Robusta can be popped into any rough patch of

ground and needs the bare minimum of care, but arabica needs a li le TLC.

The small, white flowers on the arabica plants smell of sweet jasmine and the resul ng brew is sweeter than the robusta. The farming here is organic and the locals are doing all they can to maintain the soil in natural condi on.

On a tour of the land, we see bamboo planted to prevent erosion, various flowers and greenery that do the job of pes cides and cows that provide the fer liser.

Jempinis trees also keep the bugs away, though the farmers tell us it’s planted more in hope than certainty; keeping the coffee plants healthy and bug-free, while also qualifying for the must-have organic stamp of ap-proval, is a big job. See more at: h p://www.odt.co.nz/lifestyle/travel
