Throughout its short but exciting history, Vytautas Magnus University has been faithfully nurturing and continuing its distinguished traditions. What sets this university apart is its willingness to organize studies, scientific research and life of the community in a different way. Intellectuals from Lithuania and abroad have participated in the re-establishment of VMU and defined its goals, which are being pursued to this day. Here, utmost importance is given to honesty, tolerance and dialogue, while the forerunning principles are liberal and democratic. Creativity, progress and development of national culture are all brought into sharp focus.

From the very first days of the university’s re-establishment in 1989, the experiences of Western universities have been an important influence. VMU was the first Lithuanian institution of higher education where Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degree studies were offered. Modern conception of studies, based on the model of Harvard University, is implemented here. VMU differs from other Lithuanian universities in the freedom it gives the students to choose and design their study schedule.

The VMU community – students, lecturers, graduates – is united by the idea of artes liberales, i.e. the classical university of liberal arts. Warm, honest interaction and liberal humanist spirit always follow and provide strength to the community.

The university is an exceptionally important institution to the state. For the members of the academic community, it serves as the hotbed for science, improvement and communication. It is not just an institution of higher learning; it is much more. It is the perfect embodiment of freedom and autonomy, which the humanity had first achieved a thousand years ago when the first university was opened and helped people learn to live as a community adhering to ideals of this kind.

Classical liberal arts universities are the labs of modern life, educating bold young people who are not afraid to experiment and are on their way to becoming professional contributors to their own country’s future. A classical university is not governed by pragmatic matters. Formulas do not apply here. This is the space for young people to develop critical thinking and become more open-minded. This is where the country’s future is built. Such is the Vytautas Magnus University of today.

Vytautas Magnus University keeps in step with the ever-changing world: renews itself, adapts to the demands and generates new ideas. The university encourages discovering other cultures and nurturing the public spirit. Special attention is paid to aspects more and more appreciated in the constantly changing planet – the maturation of ideas, expression of personality, communication, partnership. This allows VMU to remain an important and significant source of intellectual thought in Kaunas, Lithuania, Europe and the world.

Studies at the university are offered by ten faculties – Arts, Catholic Theology, Economics and Management, Humanities, Informatics, Law, Music Academy, Natural Sciences, Political Science and Diplomacy and Social Sciences.

Local and incoming international students have the opportunity to study modern and classical foreign languages: Arabic, English, Chinese, Danish, Estonian, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian (for foreigners), Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Lithuanian sign language and three kinds of Greek: Ancient, New Testament and modern. If there is enough demand, the old Icelandic and Serbian languages are also taught here. A large crowd of lecturers who hail from the USA, Italy, France, Germany, Japan, Korea and other countries teach language of their native tongue at VMU. Special courses of Lithuanian language are also taught to foreigners at the university.

Vytautas Magnus University provides the opportunity to attend the chosen courses as a free listener. After studies, free listeners receive transcript of records (list of the attended subjects, received credits and evaluations).

The university is particularly focused on the training of researchers who conduct independent research, promote experimental development (social or cultural) and seek scientific solutions. The university offers PhD studies in 18 different fields of the humanities, biomedicine and social and physical sciences. When Vytautas Magnus University was re-opened in 1989, it took just four years until doctoral studies were launched. In 2009, 42 people were awarded PhD degrees at VMU. From 1993 until 2013, more than 523 doctoral dissertations were defended in the university.

Lectures and seminars at VMU take place in rooms with modern equipment, labs and computer classes.

VMU Library is a great place to study and research. It is constantly improved and tailored to the community’s needs. Scholars and students receive high quality services here and can find any material in the blink of an eye – books and documents on the humanities, biomedicine, social and physical sciences, i.e. the main focus of the university, are readily available. The library provides both traditional and online resources in the form of over 270 000 printed materials and access to 43 licensed Internet databases containing almost 60 000 full-text documents. It boasts three lending departments and nine reading rooms, which have 500 workplaces. Resources and services are provided not only in physical space, but in virtual environment as well. The library also has a unique sector for manuscripts and special collections, which preserves the heritage of manuscripts related to the university and its history, as well as personal archives and the manuscript heritage of Lithuanian arts, literature, culture, history and public figures.

Fast Wi-Fi Internet is available in 95 percent of all university area. VMU students can get accommodation at 3 dorms with more than 900 rooms. University also provides favourable studying conditions for the disabled. Every year 3 million litas are handed out in scholarships for the students, and over over 400,000 litas are allocated for various benefits.

During the interwar period, it remained the only Lithuanian school of higher education. Before long, it became a vitally important breeding ground for cultural, scientific and modern national ideas. The university was unique during the interwar period due to its free spirit, eventful and exciting social life, a nurtured sense of community. Most of the famous contemporary intellectuals, highest ranking Lithuanian officials and government figures studied here. This university was also the place where the most prominent scientific and cultural movements of the period were founded.

Since its first years, the university has been following a liberal policy on studies and paying exceptional attention to liberal arts and social sciences, acknowledging their role in uniting the nation and fostering its historical memory. To this day, the values of VMU remain the same – modernity, partnership, liberal and communal thoughts.

When the 500th anniversary of the death of Grand Duke Vytautas Magnus was commemorated in 1930, the University of Lithuania was renamed to honour his name and the occasion, and is known today as VMU.

The history of VMU is inextricably linked to the establishment of several other higher education schools in Lithuania. After the restructuring of the Division of Agronomy and Forestry at the University of Lithuania and Dotnuva Technical School, 1924 saw the founding of Aleksandras Stulginskis University (then known as the Lithuanian University of Agriculture). The roots of the Lithuanian Sports University can be traced back to the opening of Higher Courses of Physical Education (HCPE) in 1934 and their closing in 1938, when the VMU Faculty of Humanities took over all of HCPE’s functions. An autonomous higher education institution, Lithuanian State Institute of Physical Education, was established in 1945. In 1950, Kaunas State University was split into the Kaunas Polytechnics Institute (Kaunas University of Technology) and Kaunas University of Medicine (now Lithuanian University of Health Sciences).

The Soviet government closed Vytautas Magnus University down in 1950, but some of its faculties served as a foundation for other schools of higher education.

Thanks to emigrants, the academic tradition of VMU not only survived, but also kept developing for long years until restoration of independence. In 1989, the university was re-established thanks to the collective efforts of Lithuanian and emigrant scientists. At the time, it was the first autonomous school of higher education in the country.

The Statute of University legitimated the principle of academic freedom and the unity of science and studies. It introduced the principle of three level studies and used a modern studying model based on an American concept, which was completely unique at the time. The concept givesmore preference to wide-spanning, general university education, as opposed to narrow and heavily specialized studies. This shifts the focus to a more universal, versatile education and the needs of modern society.

To this day, Vytautas Magnus University stands out from the crowd due to the implementation of liberal principles in its framework of studies, which allows students to enjoy the freedom of choice and wealth of opportunities to expand knowledge in several different scientific fields.

In 2012, VMU and other universities of Kaunas – Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuanian Sports University, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and Aleksandras Stulginskis University – marked the 90th anniversary since the establishment of their common predecessor, the University of Lithuania.

Vytautas Magnus University’s origins are closely linked to the interwar and the moods of freedom and the cultural renaissance that prevailed at the time. The university’s inception coincided with the birth of Lithuanian Statehood. Having declared the country’s political independence on February 16th in 1918, the key f igures of Lithuanian enlightenment considered it a high priority task to establish a Lithuanian university. Four years later, after the reorganization of the Program of Higher Education, the University of Lithuania was opened in Kaunas.

Since the establishment of the university in 1922, 66 distinguished people have been awarded the Honorary Doctor’s degrees. Honorary titles have been granted to the Presidents, Signatories of the Independence Act, poets and writers, scientists and other individuals who have greatly contributed to the history of Lithuania and the university. Since the opening of the university, 15 prominent persons have been awarded the title of Honorary Professor.

Today VMU is the hotbed for social and political sciences, arts, theology, law and the humanities in Kaunas. The university boasts innovative research and relevant studies of natural sciences and informatics, while its programmes of economics and management enjoy immense popularity and attract the most talented high school leavers every year.The university rests on the foundations of collegial communication among students and teachers, dissemination of liberal ideas, general education (study system of liberal arts), multilingualism, encouragement of humanist values, modern outlook towards studies and international collaborations. VMU is an open, liberal and independent university, nurturing personalities capable of thinking and acting creatively and independently.

The university is set apart from other Lithuanian educational institutions by its unique study system, which offers a broad general education and awards the graduates with the Bachelor’s (BA) or Master’s (MA) degrees. The VMU alumni are able to think independently and creatively, they are active members of the public community, open to innovations and striving to learn and improve for their entire lives.

VMU is faithful to its liberal study policy, which allows the students themselves to design their study schedule and decide which subjects they

want to study and when. Opportunities are available to switch from one study programme to another or to change the format of studies.

VMU offers the university entrants to choose from 49 Bachelor’s and 55 Master’s degree study programmes (28 of them are available in English), as well as 15 postgraduate study programmes. Also accepted are applicants for integrated legal studies and doctoral studies in 18 scientific areas. Today the most-developed studies at VMU are the humanities and the social sciences. However, every year there is a growing attention to the programmes of the arts, physical and exact sciences, i.e., new media art, informatics, mathematics and its applications, environmental science and biology, etc.

Studies at the university are organized by 10 faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Catholic Theology, the Faculty of Economics and Management, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Informatics, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Music Academy. Each of them offers not only various study programmes of three levels, but also great studying conditions and a diverse academic life, providing plenty of opportunities for creative self-expression and scientific activities.

Faculty of Arts is a dynamic division of the university, which is always full of original ideas. It seeks to prepare universal artists and theorists of art who would successfully integrate into job markets in Lithuania and abroad. Unique integrated studies of Theory and History of Arts, as well as innovative programmes of New Media Art, Acting and Creative Industries are offered here. Departments of Art History and Criticism, Theatre Studies and Contemporary Arts prepare Bachelors of Arts and Humanities, as well as Masters of theatre studies and performing arts management, art historians and critics, curators, experts of cultural heritage and creative industries.

This is the only faculty in Lithuania which offers integrated degree studies of Theory and History of Arts: it prepares universally educated art critics and art historians who possess comprehensive knowledge of various arts (fine arts, architecture, theatre, music, cinema, dance, photography) and are capable of applying theory in practice. Art critic and historian is an elite profession, especially valued among intellectuals. The faculty also offers master studies and doctoral studies of the same field.

New interdisciplinary programmes are also available at the Faculty of Arts. The goal of New Media Art studies is to provide knowledge of different media (photography, video, audio arts, computer graphics, multimedia technology) and skills of personal management, curatorship, art

project organisation and management. The new programme of Acting arms soon-to-be actors with interdisciplinary skills they can creatively employ in acting, text composition, directing, etc. Its graduates are prepared for professional careers in theatre, cinema, TV and other creative industries. In 2013, the faculty will launch undergraduate programme of Creative Industries, which will prepare managers and executives of creative industries.

Studies at the Faculty of Arts take place not just in lecture rooms but also in art laboratories, libraries, museums, theatre, cinema and concert halls, serving as the place for examination of art objects and creative practice. Lectures in the faculty are read by famous artists and experts of Lithuanian art.

The faculty has established international relations with many universities and institutes around the world. Lectures by renowned scientists, teachers and professors from Lithuania, Western Europe, the USA and other countries speak volumes about faculty’s reputation. Participants in the LLP / Erasmus programme spend a semester studying at universities in various European cities. Scientific researchers of the faculty collaborate with higher education institutions of Paris, Gotland, Warsaw, Helsinki, Riga, Tartu, Minsk, Grodno, Stockholm, Bergen and Cracow. Currently VMU is taking part in the national programme on the development

of Lithuanian higher education in creative and cultural industries as well as the Leonardo da Vinci project “Study trip as model of research, education and practice in vocational training in culture animation and community work – LOCALISE”.

A specialized arts reading room and a media art lab are functioning at the faculty. The reading room has accumulated many valuable and rare books and a lot of visual material (slides, CD, DVD, video records) on the specialized subjects of theory and history of various art forms. Also preserved here are periodical publications about art and the BA and MA theses written by the students of the Faculty of Arts.

Faculty students and teachers take part in various EU-funded science and research projects. Faculty students participate in the activities of the Theatre Discussion Club, VMU Theatre and the volunteer community at Gallery 101 and the Arts Centre.

The Faculty of Catholic Theology is the only Lithuanian faculty approved by the Apostolic Congregation for Catholic Education in Vatican and awarding not just civil but ecclesiastical degrees. The studies here are attractive not only to future priests but to seculars as well. The faculty welcomes students who hold Christian values or plan on working in the church or public organizations, solving socially relevant issues of morality, spirituality, ethics, responding to fundamental needs of a person, family and society.

The faculty accepts admissions to BA study programmes of Catholic Theology and Pedagogy of Religion. Students here can also pursue a Licentiate in Theology (study programme of Pastoral Theology) and a degree of Master of Religious Studies (study programme of Religious Education). For one semester, the students of the faculty can improve their knowledge at universities in countries of the EU and do LLP / Erasmus internship at an organization of their choice abroad.

First level students at the VMU Faculty of Catholic Theology are learning knowledge of philosophy and theology, getting to know Christian worldview, basics in psychology and educology. Master’s degree programmes of Family Research, Pastoral Theology and Religious Education allow to expand the students’ knowledge on the law of the Catholic Church, Christian anthropology and pastoralization in the Bible, psychology of marriage, harmonious collaboration between family and schools in the processes of education, factors influencing expression of sexuality, the

role of educators in the prevention of addiction, innovations in the science and practice of religion studies, adult education, etc.

The Faculty of Catholic Theology provides the necessary conditions for the students to become well-educated and mature personalities. Exceptional attention is given to the community life and the soul leading of the students. Groups are assembled for prayer and discussions, students organize events ranging from talent shows to weekends of recollections and seminars. Students also work as volunteers with the radio station “Marijos radijas”, the Kaunas Archdiocese Youth Center, the New Evangelization Office and other Catholic organizations. Various conferences, courses (“Alfa”, “Know Yourself ”) and seminars are an excellent setting for the students to discuss religion and life, look for ample solutions to relevant problems.

The faculty encourages research activities of its students. Scientific association “Signum” invites the students to engage in research activities, participate in conferences and discussions. The members of the association invite researchers from other faculties and universities to read lectures and reveal the latest discoveries of various scientific fields. The association “Signum” organizes the sections of students’ presentations at scientific conferences and lectures by the faculty’s students at other scientific student associations.

The VMU Faculty of Economics and Management is one of the best internationally acclaimed schools of economics and management in Lithuania. The international network of higher education schools “EDUNIVERSAL” has evaluated 7000 universities around the world and selected 1000 of them as organizing the best studies of business administration and management. In 2007 and 2012, this list included the Faculty of Economics and Management at Vytautas Magnus University.

The faculty offers studies at three levels – Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral – while the study programmes pull in the brightest Lithuanian high school graduates. Also functioning at the faculty is the Business Consulting and Continuous Education Centre, which also accepts admissions to various learning programmes, ranging from short specialized courses to Master’s degree studies of management and administration.

Well-qualified faculty teachers contribute to the evolving responsibility, diligence, self-reliance and communicability of the future graduates. Student internship is given high priority at the faculty. Successful careers of the alumni at various Lithuanian business organizations, local branches of foreign companies and governmental institutions serve as a testament to the fact that the studies offer enough universal and specialized knowledge to help the students successfully integrate into the competitive world of business.

The students of the Faculty of Economics and Management were the first at the university to participate in Campus Europae, the academic exchange programme of European universities. Students travelling to study at a foreign university spend one semester studying not only the specialized subjects but also the language of the country they are visiting; on the second semester, they attend lectures that are read in foreign language. VMU is the only Lithuanian university participating in the programme.

Students also take part in the LLP / Erasmus exchange programme, allowing them to spend half a year acquiring knowledge at universities of Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Greece, France, Italy, Norway and other countries.

The system of study organization at the faculty is coordinated together with scientific research of economics and management. At annually held international conferences, the faculty teachers and Master’s and doctoral degree students analyze the processes of business development and discuss the latest tendencies of Lithuanian economics, finance system and organization management. Scientific articles are published in periodical journals of the faculty, “Management of Organizations: Systematic Research” and “Applied Economics: Systematic Research”.

The humanities at Vytautas Magnus University are especially important, because, aside from high quality education, they also provide the student with the ability to explore and understand the world around us, use independent and critical thinking and develop an original and creative personality. Thus, studying the humanities is worthwhile and meaningful.

The faculty offers the following studies of the humanities: history, ethnology, philosophy and Lithuanian, English, German and French philology, as well as Italian studies and Romance languages, Baltic region cultures and East Asian cultures and languages. These programmes can be selected as the major track at BA, MA and PhD level studies. Every semester, various study subjects are taught by guest lecturers from all around the world.

BA level graduates may choose to pursue Master’s degree at a different faculty or university. Those who decide not to continue studying find a job at various institutions and organizations: publishing houses, editorial offices, archives, museums, research institutions, schools, governmental offices, public sector and institutions of international relations, companies of tourism and business. Graduates quickly get to know the specifics of the work, as they have acquired what is the most important – not

the rapidly aging knowledge of a particular specialty, but a wide-ranging education of liberal arts. The driving force of the faculty’s scientific research is in the research clusters and research centres of Computational Linguistics, Culture Research, Prof. Bronius Vaškelis’ Literary Comparativistics, Kaunas’ History, Intercultural Communication and Multilingualism, and Lithuanian Emigration Institute.

A wide variety of research is carried out at the Centre of Computational Linguistics, such as development of the online information translation tool, digitalization of verbal and written language, grammatical and semantic analysis of the Lithuanian language, research of spoken language, automatic transcription of music and so on.

The Lithuanian Emigration Institute conducts research on the cultural, political and scientific heritage of the Lithuanian Diaspora, in addition to collecting and preserving unique archives of the Diaspora. Scientists working at the centre investigate the history, culture and literature of Lithuanian exile, analyze the processes of modern migration, etc.

At the Culture Research Centre, the phenomena of modern Lithuanian urban culture are investigated, as well as the specifics and activities of various subculture communities and the virtual culture formed

by the computer technologies. The Centre of Kaunas’ History researches many different aspects of the city and region of Kaunas and the university. This centre frequently holds international and national scientific conferences, implements research programmes and projects, organizes expeditions and collects a historical bibliography of the research areas in the centre.

The researchers associated with the Centre for Intercultural Communication and Multilingualism pay special attention to the issues of multilingualism and its relation to first and second language acquisition, language development, attrition, maintenance and shift.

The scientists in the Centre of Prof. Bronius Vaškelis’ Literary Comparativistics are occupied with researching and comparing works by artists of different nationalities, looking for relations between different areas of art, tracing the influence of environment on the texts and their authors.

The Faculty of Humanities also has no less than 9 active clubs of its academic community: clubs uniting enthusiasts of history, philosophy, ethnology, literature and foreign languages are always on the lookout for new members.

Studies at the VMU Faculty of Informatics are not limited to the acquiring of traditional knowledge of informatics and mathematics, thus they attract not just those interested in computers, formulas, calculations and algorithms or programming. The faculty is oriented towards universal educating, as the studies include the knowledge related not only to the particular specialty, but also to other sciences which share common ties with informatics. The students expand their horizons and become educated personalities, able to creatively apply modern instruments of informatics and mathematics in professional practices of various areas.

The faculty offers BA and MA degree study programmes, adapted to the needs of modern society. In addition to gaining the most important knowledge of informatics and mathematics, the students also learn to apply it while modelling business management decisions, designing services to the users of modern networks, creating virtual reality and virtual communities, analyzing language texts and sounds of music, composing images or imitating thought processes.

Alumni of the faculty, now working as programmers, system administrators, researchers, analysts, project managers, company CEOs and at other positions, claim that the main advantage of studies at the VMU Faculty of Informatics is the wide span

of knowledge offered, which transcends the limits of the specialty. According to Director of Alna Software Artūras Gruodis, “university education forms the theoretical framework and develops the learning skills, which later have to be improved independently. It is good that the priority at Vytautas Magnus University is given not to highly specialized studies but to wide and universal preparation of a specialist”.

Students of the Faculty of Informatics are provided excellent studying conditions: modern computer labs are available, a library, research labs and centres are functioning here. An opportunity to improve the skills acquired at the university is provided by the LLP / Erasmus student exchange programme, giving a chance to study at universities in European countries for one or two semesters.

Together with faculty teachers and researchers, the students are able to participate in scientific and utilitarian projects, supported by national and EU funds. Research results are used to implement information society development projects, which are considered very high priority by the European Union. The range of research activities is wide enough for the students to choose one according to their own interests.

Modern equipment is used to carry out the works at the laboratories of Computer Controlled Systems, Internet and Mobile Solutions and Multimedia, as well as the centres

of Computer Linguistics, Energetic Security Research and other labs or centres. The faculty regularly organizes seminars of presentations by students, lecturers, alumni, doctoral students and guest lecturers or business representatives.

One of the aims here is to link the theoretical knowledge to relevant examples of its application; therefore, the faculty maintains close ties with scientific research institutes and advanced companies of information technology, telecommunications and other areas. The graduates of the faculty have brought themselves together into a club of the faculty’s Alumni, actively communicating with the university community and introducing the perspectives for work in their companies, sharing experience, inviting students to come on internship.

For the future university students, the faculty organizes open days, as well as annual events for students of high schools and gymnasiums, such as IFtorina, Virtualybės and the high school student summer camp. Their participants have a chance to find out more about informatics and mathematics before applying for studies at the university. They can also take part in contests and get to know the life of a university student. High school students are also invited to attend events organized by VMU and the ITMC Computing Academy.

Continuation of TraditionsLegal studies at Vytautas Magnus University are following a long tradition. During the interwar period (1922–1940), legal studies at the university were supervised by a famous lawyer and scientist, prof. Petras Leonas. Renowned contemporary professors, such as Vaclovas Biržiška, Mykolas Römeris and Antanas Krikščiukaitis, read lectures at VMU. During the Soviet era, lectures for future lawyers were not available in Kaunas. After the restoration of independence of Lithuania and the re-establishment of Vytautas Magnus University, legal studies were brought back as well and have been offered since 1995.

Modern and Integrated Study ModelLegal studies at VMU were restored and prepared according to the model of Western universities. The choice was decided by the demand for highly qualified lawyers, who would possess wide liberal education, fluency in legal English and ability to work in both Lithuania and abroad. Currently, the faculty provides integrated studies of law, which encompass the Bachelor’s and Master’s level studies. For the graduates, the degree of the Master of Law and the professional qualification of a lawyer are awarded.

Michigan State University Certificate in Transnational LawStudents of the Faculty of Law have the opportunity to get the Michigan State University Certificate in Transnational Law, in addition to their VMU Master’s degree diploma. The certificate testifies that the faculty’s alumnus has passed the main courses

of international law and has a good command of legal English. VMU is the first university in Lithuania and one of the few in Europe to have signed an agreement of such kind with one of the most prestigious universities in the USA.Modern Teaching Methods and the Best Preparation of LawyersThe Faculty of Law is exceptional due to its unique teaching methods, promoting the Socratic Method during the lectures. Rather than having the teacher speak and the students take notes, an unconventional approach, practiced in the most prestigious American universities, is taken. During discussions and practical activities, the students analyze specific cases where legal regulations are applied and solve exercises of collision law by applying Q & A form. many of the teachers are practicing lawyers, the students are acquainted not only with all essential elements of the law in Lithuania, but also with the issues that the lawyers face when applying the law in practical situations, which are frequently looked at during the lectures.

Highly Qualified Scientists Keeping in Step with Modern TimesConsidering it one of their top priorities, scientists at the faculty pay due attention to the influence of globalization on legal issues. The study material is kept fresh and relevant thanks to innovative scientific research, which is carried out to tackle the hot-button issue of globalization and the problems it brings to the law. Research results are presented at special conferences organized by the faculty and the English-language scientific journal “Baltic Journal of Law & Politics”, published by the Faculty of Law in collaboration with the Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy.

Kaunas boasts deep-rooted traditions of training professional musicians, continuing since at least the beginning of the 20th century. Artists that were groomed in a Kaunas’ music school of higher education during the interwar period contributed vastly to the culture of both the provisional capital and the country. Suspended during the Soviet years, the training of musicians with highest qualification resumed in Kaunas in 1989.

VMU Music Academy is a constantly changing, dynamic part of the university, where the best traditions of music education (great attention to the mastering of the performing arts, the lecturers’ sharing their professional experience directly and teaching a particular specialty in a consistent manner) are balanced with broad general university education (studies of the languages, the humanities and social sciences), helping to educate an individual who is intellectual, creative and able to easily adapt to the job market.

The Music Academy is keeping and constantly strengthening close ties with social partners, heads and employees of

various cultural and educational institutions (theatres, music collectives, philharmonics, music schools and gymnasiums). These ties help to create conditions for the future professionals to acquire practical experience in concerts and pedagogy while they are still studying, and successfully fill a job position in the same field after they have graduated. Close contact between the lecturers and the students during the studies often evolves into further creative collaborations.

Currently the VMU Music Academy prepares professional performers of instrumental music, singers and teachers. It has recently started offering the full-time Master’s degree programme of Performance Art in English. As the attention to biology, biochemistry, environmental protection, ecology, alternative energy sources, climate change and other issues keeps growing worldwide, the popularity of study programmes at the Faculty of Natural Sciences has also grown substantially in the recent years. Currently, the faculty offers Bachelor’s degree study programmes of Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences and Ecology. In 2013, admissions are set to begin to the programme of Environmental Physics and Informatics.

The first-level studies prepare graduates who acquire knowledge not only in the specific study field of their choice, but also the basics of physics and biomedicine concerning origins and evolution of the universe, the genetic basics of life, the interplay between people and natural environment, the effect of various technologies on the development of society, trends of harmonious development, etc. In addition to this, the students also attend general education subjects of the humanities, social sciences, informatics and foreign languages.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences boasts modern and constantly renewed studying facilities which have been kept up-to-date by courtesy of the EU structural funds for the last couple of years. Students can undertake research not only in the modern labs at VMU, but in the research centers of other Lithuanian scientific and educational institutions as well. Postgraduate and doctoral students may contribute to the research projects carried out by the professors of their department.

The Bachelor’s and Master’s degree study programmes are frequently updated according to the experiences and research innovations of universities in Western Europe and the United States. All of the study programmes at the faculty have received high praise from foreign experts and satisfy the requirements of modern study programmes at European universities.

The students and the researchers of the faculty work hand in hand as collaborators of scientific association “Modusas”. The association rounded up a group of creative, proactive students and teachers of the faculty who have the common goal of spreading the word about natural sciences in the society, organizing summer schools, scientific conferences, seminars, discussions, public lectures, campaigns, etc.

The Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy at VMU offers attractive and interesting studies, an opportunity to improve at other European universities, an open, collegial and multicultural environment, mutual respect between the teachers and the students, evenings of non-commercial cinema and quality music, heated discussions and great potential for the future. All of this provides the students with excellent opportunities to become not just experts of their own field, but also tolerant members of the community who are capable of critical thinking. The students here are offered a flexible study system and a choice of subjects according to their own needs and hobbies.

The Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy has started functioning as a separate division of the university in 2000, when it separated from the former Institute of International Relations and Political Sciences. The community of the faculty students is as diverse as any – it consists of future political scientists, diplomats, journalists, specialists of public administration, integrated communication public communications, regional politics and economics.

The Faculty is closely collaborating with the best universities in Europe and around the world. Every year, the exchange programme LLP / Erasmus and bilateral agreements allow the students and teachers to visit universities in the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Italy, Sweden, Norway, the USA, South Korea, Taiwan

and other countries. The students gain a wealth of theoretical and practical knowledge, get to know foreign cultures and customs.

The study programmes here pull in the brightest graduates and involve not just political, diplomatic sciences, regional and international politics, but public administration and communication studies as well – students are provided with the necessary skills for future work as media and PR specialists, public sector workers, employees at diplomatic structures, EU-related institutions in Lithuania and abroad, communications companies, etc.

Faculty students publish articles in an online journal of independent thought Sparnai (www.sparnai.com), which aims to bring together a community of active young people, create an open environment for positive creative expression, initiate various campaigns or events, encourage the academic community and the public to develop an interest in culture and politics.

Since the founding of the faculty, it has been the home for the Academic Club of Political Scientists, which organizes meetings and discussions with famous politicians, scientists and public figures. Annually held Republican Student Olympics of Political Science allows its winners to have a talk with the President of the Republic of Lithuania and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. A team of faculty volunteers has been active for several years, successfully contributing to organizing and performing various activities in the faculty, such as organization of discussions, scientific conferences and faculty festivities.

The faculty has been working hard in order to ensure that the community spends time in a fun and meaningful way, while the atmosphere stays lively and collegial. Annual international scientific conferences attract the students of the faculty and other Lithuanian or foreign institutions of higher education. Scientific research carried out by the students is published in faculty journals “Political Science Almanac” and “Media Transformations”.

Liberal structure of the university and the faculty, collaborations between the departments and centres are an essential part of the organization of studies, seminars, conferences and interdisciplinary scientific and applied research projects. The Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy is also involved in the implementation of The Interdisciplinary Master’s in East European Research and Studies (MIREES), a study programme launched in cooperation with four other European universities.

The lectures at the faculty are taught by diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, heads of Lithuanian representations abroad, members of the European Parliament, members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, specialists from various ministries, journalists, public organizations’ leaders, experts and foreign scientists. The students have a chance to do internship in the Office of the President of the Republic of Lithuania, the Offices of the Seimas and the Government and other governmental institutions.

The studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences distinguish themselves in the quality of studies, international relations, research projects and their results, which determine the direction of the studies. The most attention is given to the development of the students’ professional skills, values and abilities, combining theoretical studies and practical activities. Collegial academic communication between the students and the teachers is a crucial part of the Faculty’s culture. Discussions and debates, critical thinking and reflections form the basis for academic community of the Faculty.

Currently, the Faculty is involved in 60 study and research projects financed by institutions of Lithuania and the European Union.

The studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences uphold the principles of liberal arts, and thus teach the students not only the knowledge necessary for developing professional competence, but also form their universal and humanistic world views, encourage critical thinking, create culture of tolerance, promote participation in various academic activities.

A lot of attention at the Faculty is given to the development of the students’ universal practical and professional skills. Active collaboration with governmental institutions,

companies and communities let the students expand their competences while reflecting and combining theoretical and practical knowledge, familiarizing themselves with the working environment, establishing relations with potential employers.

The opinion poll of social partners-employers and the alumni has disclosed that the Alumni of the Faculty of Social Sciences have good common competences, theoretical knowledge and practical abilities, which ensure their competitiveness in the labour market. According to the partners, the internationalism, professional motivation and qualitative orientation are the features that make these alumni unique.

The studies are enriched by interesting academic life. The students are encouraged to express themselves and show initiative in students’ organizations and various events, contribute to the management of the Faculty, academic discussions and decision making.

Periodically published journals on social sciences testify the quality of studies and research. The students of the Faculty can choose from 7 BA, 9 MA and 3 doctoral study programmes. Students may expand their horizons and competences, acquire skills in academic and professional activities, and participate in projects, conferences, seminars or volunteering activities. The academes of psychology, sociology and social work invite schoolchildren to the university. VMU Psychology Student Association and the social work students’ club “Vesta” are functioning at the Faculty.

Faculty students have many opportunities to get international experience. They can participate in research and study projects or exchange programmes LLP / Erasmus and Campus Europae, which offer studies and internships in universities of Europe, the USA, South Korea, Japan, etc. Faculty lecturers have had opportunities to develop their skills while lecturing at the universities of the United States, Canada and Europe. This programme educates economists who are capable of analyzing contemporary European economic processes in a dynamic and integrated environment by using their economic way of thinking. The studies combine academic theoretical knowledge with practical experience, which is needed to understand the essence of economic phenomena. The graduates will not only understand economic processes as a whole, but will also see the links between mathematical economic analysis and management tools in micro and macro levels. They will also gain knowledge of European economic history and law, as well as the ability to engage in a reasonable discussion using at least two major European languages.

The alumni of European Economic Studies will find no difficulty in analyzing and evaluating individual or organizational performance optimization and decision-making opportunities in different economic systems and markets, gauging the influence of changes in global economy, analyzing economic problems of organizations, countries and regions in the context of the EU Internal Market, assessing and predicting economic changes, formulating and substantiating solutions to economic problems by applying knowledge of EU law, marketing, management, small business analysis, corporate accounting and cross-cultural leadership, etc.

The focus here includes international economic relations, EU economy and integration, and intercultural communication in Europe, all of which helps to grasp the specifics of work at international companies. Students will be able to gain good command of two European languages (English and German, English and French, and English and Spanish), because bilingualism is very important in the European business and public sector.

This full-time undergraduate programme is designed to prepare highly qualified biology specialists who stand out for their creativity, broad knowledge of the field and critical thinking. They will acquire knowledge based on fundamental natural laws which is necessary in biology-related fields. The programme is also dedicated to promoting a broad range of expertise and encouraging a sense of intellectual satisfaction in studies and at work. The goal of the studies is to confer a deep interest in biology, which would inspire the ability to make use of the science in various circumstances and to maintain professional competencies during lifelong learning.

After finishing their studies, Biology graduates will be able to apply fundamental laws and methods of physics, mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics and genetics in the identification and analysis of biological systems and objects. They will learn to analyze the diversity, morphological structure, composition, nourishment, reproduction, life cycles and classification of biological objects, etc. as well as to understand principles of immune, nervous and other systems, their structures, and integration with other vital systems of biological objects. This study programme is focused on preparation of highly qualified energy field professionals who possess all-around understanding of how traditional and renewable resources are utilised. A broad array of energy and natural resource-related courses are offered. Given the increasing pressure to confront the most dramatic energy problems of modern society by using the tools of both the business and public policy worlds, the emphasis is put on understanding both of these disciplines in addition to the perspectives of engineering and fundamental and environmental science. The programme aims to accelerate the development and commercialization of low-cost, clean and efficient energy technologies.

Graduates of Energy Technologies will be able to identify energy-driven processes in nature, to apply concepts of engineering, economics, management and policy while solving problems of engineering systems, to analyze innovations in energy technologies, e.g. traditional and alternative resources, energy transformation and storage technologies, to estimate fuel expenditures and assess the potential usage of waste in energy production, etc. Among other things, students will also learn to evaluate socio-economic, technological and ecological benefits and risks of energy innovations, to design, conduct and analyze experimental studies of engineering systems with a strong socio-technical component, and to employ legal and economic principles while estimating the pollution level of environment.

Career opportunities after finishing studies include work in energy production and distribution companies, smaller enterprises and research organizations working on new alternative energy sources, governmental organizations developing the national energy program, environmental companies studying the impact of energy on environment, etc. Graduates may also continue studying at Master’s level, applying for studies of physical sciences, energy sources and technologies.

Students will also learn to explain and evaluate the trends and strategies of international support of the developing countries, to independently prepare and carry out research and applied projects, etc.

The programme is oriented towards the issues and the causal analysis of regional and national processes in the EU Eastern and Southern neighbourhoods. Students will analyze the political systems and economic and social processes in Russia and Eastern Europe (Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova), South Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan) and Middle-Eastern and South African countries, as well as the forms and strategies of international support and development cooperation in those regions. Students will have a unique opportunity to not only learn a language of their choice from one of the studied regions, but to also choose special courses which focus on particular regions and write papers, prepare projects and the BA thesis.

Students will learn to explain historical and international contexts of developing countries and regions and to predict their development prospects, to critically assess relations between political actors, economic and business structures and the media in the political systems of developing countries, to analyze political, social and economic challenges in developing regions, etc. The acquired competences will allow them to pursue a Master’s degree in more specialized programmes and to find work in public institutions, national embassies, consulates, NGOs, EU, UN and other international organizations, private sector as well as the media, etc.

This programme is an attractive choice for students who seek to become education specialists and acquire knowledge on psychology of personality, social relationships, correlation of the labour market and career opportunities, career counselling, career planning, project preparation and implementation, planning and organization of the learning stages, management of the learning process, organization of educational services, etc. Studies are based on innovative teaching and learning methods. Learning is personalized according to the students’ learning needs and personal characteristics. Studies are complemented by workshops where students can apply theory in practice.

Graduates will be able to explain the main aspects of professional counselling in personal, philosophical, psychological, social and career development. They will learn to counsel individuals and target groups on career development and teaching/learning planning issues, evaluating contexts of the political, legal, social, economic, labour market and educational systems. Studies of Career and Professional Consulting will help students learn to evaluate an individual’s career opportunities taking into account the job requirements, the person’s qualification and the labour market conditions. Other acquired abilities and skills include designing educational projects and teaching/learning groups, interpreting scientific material, using innovative methods in learning or teaching, etc.

Upon completion of studies, students may choose to apply for Master level studies in the fields of education and training, sociology, management, political sciences, etc.

VMU Institute of Social Work at the Faculty of Social Sciences is offering this new programme to future professionals of social work who will learn here how to work with local and international groups, teams and communities in national and international contexts.

Community Development courses will help graduates develop a broad comprehension of group dynamics, social stratification and social networks, interdisciplinary techniques, social policy, principles of community development based on strength perspective and diplomacy in the intercultural context. Intercultural communication in diverse groups, social economy, civil society and development of human rights in community work are among the keystones of the programme.

Students will grasp the concepts of community development, civil society, community group, team, social diversity and social welfare, etc. They will also learn to apply strengths-based perspective and leadership principles in the implementation of projects related to community development. Studies focus on the principles of adult and lifelong learning, social stratification, small and large group dynamics and personal development in groups. Outcomes of Community Development studies include appropriate application of research methods in production of evidence, creation of professional identity by means of reflection, professional supervision and counselling, etc.

After earning their Bachelor’s degree, graduates will have much wider opportunities for international social work career as social work practitioners or managers in neighbourhoods, municipal, national welfare institutions as well as local, national and especially international NGOs related to community development (such as community centre associations etc.). This is a double degree programme created in cooperation with the Louvain Catholic University (UCL) in Belgium. Its graduates are awarded the Master degree in Finance from VMU and Master degree in Management from UCL.

Students of MSc Finance and Banking programme will learn to assimilate modern theories and methods in finance, use a systematic approach to macroeconomic processes and financial management at micro level, analyze and critically evaluate the ongoing processes in the financial system and in business structures, etc. They will also learn to keep up with scientific and practical innovations in finance and to apply them in professional work.

Those who choose this programme will acquire knowledge on classical and modern financial theories. Students of the programme are taught to analyse, interpret, assess and manage problems concerning the international dimension in Eastern Europe: in particular, the political, economic and social phenomena.

Applicants must have an undergraduate (bachelor) degree in one of the following fields: law, economics, political science, sociology, geopolitics, demography, gender studies, psychology, anthropology, history, philosophy, literature, language studies, cultural studies, or agriculture. Good knowledge of the English language and basic computer skills is required as well. Candidates are also assessed individually in an interview, which examines their motivation and aptitude for the programme. MIREES includes learning activities in linguistics, economics, political, historical and cultural studies, which are integrated to provide an in-depth presentation of Eastern European countries and their role in the international context. Management of Education is a graduate programme which accepts applications from persons with a bachelor or vocational bachelor degree in all fields of studies. Compensatory study courses are required for those who did not study subjects related to education, psychology or management during their bachelor studies.

The programme aims to prepare Masters of Education who are specialised in the field of education management. Graduates will be able to design training or learning programmes in accordance with the needs of learners, the labour market, the changing society and the education strategies and policies in Lithuania and the EU. They will learn to plan educational activities, design the curriculum, apply training or learning methods corresponding to the desired outcome, the available resources, etc., to assess the learners‘ progress in the context of the taught subject, the programme or the organization, to design the strategic development plan and its implementation programme for an educational organisation, taking into account theoretical and empirical research, critical evaluation of new ideas, alternative solutions and social consequences, etc.

Furthermore, the alumni will be competent enough to conduct research of human resource career planning and the needs of staff for personal development, to design the plan for human resource career planning and staff training, to critically apply theories of philosophy, education, management and other social sciences in the systematic analysis of educational phenomena, etc.

After finishing their studies, Masters of Education may find work in public educational institutions and private organizations providing education services, education management institutions, human resource departments of enterprises and business organisations, NGOs working in the field of education, etc. They may also choose to continue studying at PhD level.

The aim of the Social Work second-cycle programme is to prepare an advanced social worker who is able to research social phenomena and social work, develop professional knowledge, skills and values, enhance the solutions to problems in human interaction and personal relation to environment, initiate social changes and innovations in pursuit of personal and social welfare while strengthening the civil society and developing professional competences.

Students who complete this programme gain competences that enable them to develop research and produce knowledge related to social work. They are able to analyse the mission and objectives of contemporary social work in the light of local and global context of human rights and justice promotion. Interrelations between social policy, social structures and resources and design social projects pose no problems for the graduates as a subject of analysis. Likewise, they will find it not difficult to critically study interactions between social worker and client and perform interventions in complex situations. Students will also learn to apply intervention methods of social work while emphasising the client’s participation in the transformation process. The Social Work degree programme is meant to shed the light on the principles, methods and restrictions of social worker activity in an organisation and a community; the graduates gain educational and professional experience, develop professional relations in organisations and continue learning independently, developing as social workers.

After finishing their studies, alumni may develop careers as managers or superior social workers in social security, education, healthcare or law: e.g., in social support departments of municipalities, social service centres, residential care institutions, NGOs, hospitals, prisons, schools, universities, social research organisations, etc. They may also climb the career ladder abroad: many graduates of this programme are working in the field of social work in Canada, USA, UK, Italy, Ireland, Norway, etc.

This is the first anthropology master programme launched in the Baltic States, which gives students the opportunity to become experts in cross-cultural analysis and mediators of socio-cultural encounters. International cooperation between VMU and Southern Illinois University (USA) offers an opportunity for students to attain the SIU Certificate in Intercultural Understanding by taking four courses offered by SIU at VMU campus.

The programme offers an intensive introduction to contemporary anthropology. It is available to graduates with little or no previous training in anthropology. Students are provided a thorough theoretical and methodological grounding in anthropology, which is essential for attaining non-judgemental understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, significance of cross-cultural perspectives and intercultural understanding. The programme combines classroom and experiential field-based learning activities that are tailored to individual student’s career plans. Students will learn to conduct independent scientific research, carry out ethnographic fieldwork and apply other methods of inquiry.

The Master degree in Social Anthropology will enable graduates to carry out empirical research based on qualitative methodology applying methods of anthropological fieldwork, and to design and conduct research on socio-cultural encounters between different global, transnational, national, regional and local development perspectives, majority and minority interests in the conditions of social change, social mobility, and multiculturalism, etc. They will learn to address problems arising from socio-cultural differences and monitor stigmatized and/or marginalized and segregated groups by representing the interests of these groups in intercultural mediation. Students will also gain skills necessary to successfully mediate in the fields of national and international cooperation by designing strategies and programmes of sustainable development in education, public health, culture, ethnic relations, environment and cultural heritage management.

After graduating, further studies of anthropology or sociology at doctoral level may be taken up, or a possible career path may be chosen as lecturer of social and cultural anthropology at college and university level. Outside of academia, career opportunities include jobs in human resource development, international business, cultural resource management or work within various organizations as well as international, state and local governmental agencies, etc.

It has joined some of the most prestigious European academic networks uniting the best universities – VMU is a full member of the European University Association (EUA), a member of the European Association for International Education (EAIE), the Baltic Sea Region University Network (BSRUN) and the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS). VMU has 231 LLP / Erasmus partners, 105 bilateral collaborative agreements with universities in Europe, Asia, USA, Japan.

Today VMU is collaborating with many universities and scientists around the world, carrying out projects, student and worker exchange, constantly improving the system of studying and research. Every year, almost two hundred students and several dozens of teachers from various universities around the world join the VMU community, in accordance to international agreements. Meanwhile, VMU students spend a semester or full academic year at a university in Europe, the USA, South Korea, Japan or another country. VMU is the only university in Lithuania which has joined the Campus Europae programme, uniting 19 European universities.

Since 1999, VMU began participating in the inter-university student and teacher exchange programme LLP / Erasmus, which allows VMU students travel to study abroad while, in turn, the university accepts large flows of international students, who come here from all over the world.

Also functioning at the university is the International Office, which manages relations with various Lithuanian and foreign institutions, presents study programmes, spreads information about studies, scholarships, internships, international science programmes, projects, etc. The office also provides help and consultations to the incoming foreign students and lecturers, regarding the questions of studies, life in Lithuania (migration) and integration into the academic community of the university.

VMU uses many ways to strengthen its international relations. Collaborations are determined by bilateral agreements, ties with other countries are established by joining and participating in international organizations and networks. Various international projects and programmes, such as LLP / Erasmus and Campus Europae, allow the university to expand its scope internationally.

Every year, Vytautas Magnus University also provides everyone with an excellent opportunity to take part in various international summer schools. Most of them follow in the footsteps of the Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Courses at VMU, which foster the oldest traditions of all summer courses here and are the most valued by foreign students and Lithuanians living abroad. In four weeks, the participants improve Lithuanian language skills, get to know Lithuanian lifestyle, visit historical landmarks, have fun on spare time.

A unique feature of VMU as a liberal arts university is the opportunity for students of all faculties to choose and study as many languages as they want of the available 30 modern and classic ones: Ancient Greek, Arabic, Catalan, Chinese, Danish, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Kirghiz, Korean, Latin, Latvian, Modern Greek, New Testament Greek, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Yiddish, Lithuanian Sign Language, and Lithuanian for foreigners. If there is popular demand, courses of Old Icelandic language are offered as well. After studying a unique combination of two or more languages, VMU students acquire multilingual competence which gives them a competitive advantage in the global labour market.

All undergraduate VMU students must acquire B2 level of English proficiency (recognised by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Specialised subjects for C1 and C1 / C2 level English are offered: Business English, Legal English, Political English, Academic English, Artistic English, Social Science English and preparation for standardised tests. There are subjects for other languages as well, tailored towards improvement of linguistic competence in specific areas: Beginner Latin for Lawyers, Business Russian (B1), Professional German (C1), etc.

Foreign language learning is intensive. Courses are organized six times a week, which includes four practical language learning sessions in lecture rooms and the computer language learning lab, and two online sessions on e-learning software platform Moodle. The

The VMU Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL) is a modern academic institute of languages, which offers the widest assortment of foreign languages in Lithuania.

The IFL offers a wide variety of subjects dedicated to the development of intercultural competence: Culture in the Arab Region, Culture in the Antiquity, Antique Mythology, Religious Symbolics, Hellenistic Culture and Christianity, Turkic World, Turkic Region Culture, Islam in the Modern World, and Culture of Countries in the Baltic Sea Region.

The IFL is an active promoter of informal language learning: the institute organizes book exhibitions, foreign film screenings, language weeks and other events. One of the most popular celebrations marks the European Day of Languages. It includes public lectures on multilingualism, language learning with involvement from international students, and creative performances by students, guests and high school pupils. For the European Day of Languages, VMU also holds events outside of university, including locations such as high schools and other places in Kaunas.

Students from other universities, VMU employees, pupils of VMU Rasa Gymnasium, Kaunas residents and guests may also sign up for language courses at the IFL: they can study together with VMU students or choose separate evening courses.

Vytautas Magnus University, which was re-established a quarter-century ago thanks to the joint efforts of Lithuanian and Diaspora scientists, seeks to become the academic and cultural centre of all Lithuanians around the world: the Lithuanian Diaspora University. With its activities, LDU improves mutual collaboration and social connections between creators in Lithuania and the Diaspora. It brings together various initiatives by scientists and artists of the country and the world in order to increase international recognition for joint research projects and to contribute to the spread of Lithuanian language, culture and achievements in arts and the academia all over the globe.

In the summer of 2013, several activities of LDU will be combined in the traditional VMU Summer Academy, which will launch the following projects: Refresh in Lithuania ( June 10–22), Lithuanian International Student Services (LISS) ( June 17–July 28) and the Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Course ( July 22–August 17).

The goal of the Refresh in Lithuania summer courses is to unite people of Lithuanian origin living abroad, to restore their connection to the homeland and to introduce them to the Lithuania of today. The courses seek to nurture the future leaders of Lithuanian Diaspora youth who would be able to gather up a circle of active people of Lithuanian descent both beside themselves and inside their communities. VMU Lithuanian Emigration Institute launched the program in order to assemble young and diligent Diaspora Lithuanians who want to not only strengthen their connection to Lithuania, but also to find their place in the Lithuanian research and labour market. The course program for 2013 is focused mostly on the history of Lithuania and the analysis of the political, economic, cultural and social situation in the country. According to Prof. Egidijus Aleksandravičius, the founder of the summer courses,

“Refresh in Lithuania is a fun and good way to lure people back at least for a moment, so that they would never abandon at least these images, this sensitivity, this bond with Lithuania, which will always be ours and will remain the only one”.

The Lithuanian International Student Services (LISS) program is a practical opportunity for young people of Lithuanian origin to acquire professional and language skills, in addition to becoming familiar with Lithuania from up close. The internship is organised by the Lithuanian-American Community in cooperation with VMU. In four years, LISS has welcomed 149 young people from the USA and Canada, who did internships in various state and health institutions, art collectives and NGOs. Director of LISS Rasa Ardytė Juškienė (USA) claims that this is more than just a great opportunity for young people to build a close connection with Lithuania. “Living in Lithuania and adding international work to one’s résumé is invaluable”, she says.

In the annual Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Course, foreign students are invited to improve their knowledge of the Lithuanian language, learn grammar, become familiar with Lithuanian culture, society, traditions, politics and history. This year the course will be organized for the 15th time by the VMU Faculty of Humanities. “The language and culture of our region is attractive not just to the youths of the neighbouring countries, such as Latvia, Estonia and Poland. Every year, more than 30 guests from Europe, USA and even Australia and East Asia come here to learn Lithuanian and have fun in the summer course for one month”, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and the head of the Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Course Prof. Ineta Dabašinskienė explained. In 2012, students from 16 countries participated in the course, and the graduation diploma was awarded to the 400th participant.

Lithuanian diasPOra uniVersityThe goal of the Lithuanian Diaspora University (LDU) is to foster collaboration and creative exchange between scientists and students from Lithuania and other corners of the world, to unite the Lithuanian Diaspora and to attract everyone interested in modern Lithuania, its daily life, traditions and culture. LDU is involved in a variety of activities: VMU Summer Academy events, study and internship programs for students and researchers, Lithuanian education projects, etc. At the same time, LDU functions as a conceptual, virtual entity, which is open to initiatives of various clubs, associations, communities, etc.

All activities of LDU unite, foster and build traditions, contributing to the development of a multicultural Lithuania and the propagation of Lithuanian academic thought.

LDU publishes information on opportunities and uses other ways to promote involvement of young scientists and researchers in the activities of VMU. It cooperates with Baltic centres around the world and holds seminars and conferences on issues of life in the modern ever-changing world: Lithuanian emigration and re-emigration, questions of identity change, etc.

The Lithuanian Diaspora University provides an opportunity for the best students and researchers of VMU to study and do internships abroad. The internships are funded by nominal scholarships established by the university’s sponsors. One of them is Francoise Puzyna-Mockūnas, the widow of famous Diaspora figure late Liūtas Mockūnas. She says that young people must travel, live abroad, and gain experience of living in a multicultural environment. “Then, after coming back to Lithuania, they will be able to promote

innovative ideas, transform the work ethic and create business-friendly conditions”, the sponsor pointed out.

Activities managed by LDU also include a multitude of other scientific and education projects, such as research on Lithuanian Diaspora heritage, migrantology studies and Lithuanian education. Aside from fostering and developing relations with Diaspora communities, the Lithuanian Diaspora University also organizes book presentations, film viewings and exhibitions related to the Diaspora. There is an event of this kind planned for the near future: on July 15–17, 2013, VMU will host the summit of regional chairmen from the Lithuanian World Community (LWC) and the Lithuanian World Youth Association (LWYA). Lithuanian Diaspora University will also provide support in the preparation for the unique concert on the occasion of the Day of Unity of World Lithuanians. The participants of this concert will gather from all around the world.

innOVatiVe researChIn more than two decades, the scientists of Vytautas Magnus university have accumulated solid experience in international scientific research and project management. They hold memberships of national and international professional associations of diverse scientific areas and fields. Publications in the scientific press of Lithuania and foreign countries are frequently announced.

For participation in scientific research and experimental development, as well as achievements and merits, a few dozens of VMU scientists have been honoured with important prizes and awards, including the National Science Award and the Lithuanian National Culture and Arts Award.

The strength of VMU lies in its ability to involve young scientists in scientific activities, providing doctoral students at the university with ideal conditions for not only developing theoretical and methodological knowledge of a particular scientific area, but also carrying out internationally significant research, participating in international projects and internships abroad, teaching lectures and conducting seminars at VMU and foreign universities.

Students who are seeking a PhD degree at the university are provided highly favourable conditions at every step, including studies, improvement of theoretical and methodological knowledge of a particular scientific field at various seminars and doctoral schools, implementation of independent research, participation in international scientific projects or scholarship programs abroad, giving lectures and seminars at VMU and its partners.

After VMU was granted the permission to provide PhD studies in 18 scientific fields in 2011, the education at this level went through a complete overhaul, leading to the establishment of joint and interinstitutional PhD studies. The best scientists of the country (and, in some cases, from abroad) were brought to work together in every field and the networks of PhD studies in various fields were created. This innovative model of doctoral studies enables consolidation of the best scientific potential, knowledge and experience of the participating institutions, utilization of all of their resources and infrastructure.

The focus in developing PhD studies at university is to achieve that they give students a geographical and interdisciplinary mobility as well as interinstitutional and international cooperation, by making use of the integrated interuniversity cooperation and connections with other partners.

Most of the VMU students’ creative activities are managed by VMU Arts Centre, which handles initiatives in both performing and visual arts. The latter category is supported by VMU Gallery 101 and Menų Virtuvė (Art Kitchen), a creative space for the students working at the gallery as volunteers. Meanwhile, the performing arts are represented by student folk collective Linago, folk dance ensemble Žilvitis, girls’ chamber choir, academic theatre of movement, student theatre studio and Brazilian combat and movement group Capoeira. The Arts Centre also works together with the Dept. of Theatre Studies, organizing activities of the Theatre Discussion Club, which unites fans and professionals of the stage.

VMU Theatre is the first professional university theatre in Lithuania, a new theatrical space, a studio and a lab for joint projects by recognised and promising young artists from Lithuania and abroad. The theatre manager is Goda Piktytė, winner of the Golden Cross of the Stage.

VMU Chamber Orchestra is a collective of young, enthusiastic, talented and aspiring musicians. Their repertoire spans a wide range of compositions from all eras, including Baroque and the modern times. The orchestra does not restrict itself to classical pieces: its youthful members are open to experiments and do not shy away from performances which transcend the boundaries of the classical genre. A large portion of the orchestra’s repertoire is taken up by modern Lithuanian music. Inspired by the performances of the collective, Lithuanian composers write music commissioned by the orchestra, some of it exclusively for these performers.

VMU Mixed Choir, founded in autumn 2011, is the first of its kind at the university. Its members include students of the Music Academy and other faculties of the university. The choir aspires to become the best student choir in Kaunas, which would participate in notable art projects and events of the university, the city and the country. The VMU Mixed Choir welcomes all members who can and want to sing.

Sesija is a biannual magazine which offers up a selection of various analytical essays, articles and other texts by professors, lecturers, scientists and students. VMU Public Communications Office and Study Marketing Office offer the students a unique opportunity to gain experience in public relations and event management.

After joining the VMU volunteer team, students can acquire useful knowledge, take on challenges, participate in training sessions or seminars, manage events, visit schools and talk to the pupils.

VMU Studentų Santara Club organizes meetings and study weekends, incites conversations on interesting, inconvenient or controversial issues.

The Lithuanian Fellowship of Christian Students (LFCS) at the Faculty of Catholic Theology seeks to increase the influence of Christian philosophy among Lithuanian university students.

The Academic Soul Leading Club is striving for spiritual elevation of the students, the teachers and other university staff, improving their understanding of Christian notions and convictions in various areas of life.

Commit to be fit, forget books for a bit! At the VMU Sports Centre, all students can exercise or play sports for free. Every student or employee of VMU can fulfil their athletic ambitions here. If you’re eager for sports and meaningful leisure activities, you will enjoy your time at the VMU Sports Centre: you’ll find exercise equipment, aerobics hall, basketball court, tennis tables, etc.

Students themselves show initiative as well, e.g. the recently founded girls’ volleyball team has already achieved some success playing in the national student volleyball league.

VMU students may also play in the interfaculty basketball and football matches of the Rector’s Cup, which takes place every year.

Those who do not play basketball but wish to support their university teams may become members of the VMU Basketball Fan Club.

VMU community is especially proud of its achievements in basketball: the men’s basketball team has become the champion of the Lithuanian Student Basketball League (LSBL) ten times and the runner-up twice. It has also won the European Universities Basketball Championship (EUBC) five times and collected the gold at the SELL Student Games four times. In 2012, the VMU women’s basketball team won the gold medals in the LSBL for the first time. University students have also won awards in judo, orienteering, track-and-field, football, fencing and badminton.

VMU Economicus is an economist club which unites students interested in economics and gives them freedom to seek self-fulfilment and self-education outside of studies.

AIESEC Kaunas is a youth education platform which provides opportunities to develop skills necessary in today’s world or in the near future.

The student-founded VMU Radio has been expanding to include more and more activities ever since its inception in 2010: it encompasses radio shows, music news reports, event management, etc.

VMU Psychology Student Association (VMU PSA) promotes the science of psychology, encourages students to be active and prepares them for future professional work.

The Faculty of Social Sciences also has an active club for students of social work, Vesta.

The student science association Signum is functioning at the Faculty of Catholic Theology.

The Scientific Association of Law at the Faculty of Law organizes monthly discussions with representatives of various legal occupations, who share their experience with the students. The association also conducts scientific research which provides students with invaluable experience and skills.

ESN VMU is an organization dedicated to the support of international exchange students.

ELSA VMU, a branch of the European Law Students’ Association in Lithuania, aims to help students and graduates of the Faculty of Law improve their theoretical and practical legal knowledge, professional and organizational skills, etc. It also promotes and develops international cooperation, mutual understanding, initiative and responsibility. Last but not least, ELSA encourages legal education of the public at large.

The Academic Club of Political Scientists (ACP) is a public, non-political non-profit organization, which has established connections in the entire academic community of Lithuania. ACP promotes the development of civil society in Lithuania and the political culture of academic youth, as well as its more active involvement in the public life in general.

The Faculty of the Humanities has quite a few informal student clubs: Ethnology Club, History Club, English Club, Academic Literature Club ALK, Lithuanian Language and Culture Club, Scientific Association of Philosophy Students and Collegium Artes Liberales, which promotes the humanities.

Philosophy club Agora urges students and lecturers to discuss philosophical texts in an informal environment. The club also organizes the film screening series Filosofija Kine (Philosophy in Cinema). History students are active members of the International Students of History Association (ISHA).

The Miguel de Cervantes Spanish Language and Culture Club is dedicated to the propagation of Spanish language and culture and the introduction of the history, literature, culture and customs of Spanish-speaking countries.

The Japanese Club Hashi brings together the fans of Japanese culture in Kaunas. Following the example of the Japanese, the club is managed only by the students. In Hashi’s weekly meetings, its members watch Japanese movies, drink tea, play games and participate in discussions. Hashi community also organizes meetings with Japanese people visiting Lithuania.

The Eastern culture fan club Diwan was founded by the lecturers and the Turkoman students at the VMU Institute of Foreign Languages as a non-political gathering. It is open to anyone interested in the languages and cultures of Asia’s Western and Central regions.

VMU student club Balts spreads the idea of Baltic unity and brings together students of various fields. The club members exchange experiences, hold events, etc.

Modusas is the scientific society of academic youth at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, which is dedicated to the propagation of natural sciences, environmental protection and scientific knowledge in the society and the academic community.

The Radio Fan Club, established in 2004, unites the fans of the radio interested in radio sports, construction of equipment, communication technologies, etc.

Members of the VMU Aula Magna Music Association include active citizens and members of the academic community, music lovers and artists. The association seeks for the VMU Aula Magna to become a prominent cultural hotbed, a cosy space for chamber music favoured by the Kaunas public and guests.

The distinctive architectural and urban character of the city is undoubtedly the result of its unique situation: exceptionally picturesque frame of nature and strategically comfortable geographic location. Kaunas is a city of waterways, currently positioned at the crossing of two significant international transport routes and looking to get back the lost status of the city by the water. The river valleys, slopes and hills keep Kaunas closely bonded with nature and reveal the distinctive silhouettes of urban landscape and panoramic vistas.

Kaunas and its architecture are undoubtedly unique in the context of place and region. First and foremost, the city is centuries old, its historical roots being much deeper than many other European cities. The Kaunas Old Town reflects the history of a medieval city. This Gothic city is adorned by buildings of Northern Renaissance, while its suburbs are a magnificent heritage of Baroque architecture. However, it is not just the old architecture that distinguishes Kaunas from other cities.

Kaunas is the only city in Lithuania boasting such a rich and unique heritage of the modern interwar architecture. Unlike most European cities, Kaunas has a concentrated exposition of the 1920s-1930s Bauhaus architecture.

Kaunas is an interesting modern city enjoying fame for its intellectual atmosphere, friendly people, historical and architectural heritage of the interwar period, rich cultural life and traditions of different cultures. Thousands of young people come to study, live and work in Kaunas every year.

Foreigners and Lithuanians, guests and tourists are attracted to the city by its world famous festivals of music, dance and visual arts, unconventional projects, museum collections, art galleries and impressive architecture of varying styles and eras.

VMU art spaces are cultural hot spots of the city, where various cultural, educational and social activities are carried out: public lectures, discussions, film screenings, music events, exhibitions. VMU scientists and students are actively involved in the cultural and social life of Kaunas, nurturing the humanist culture of the city, collaborating with social partners in the city and the region. Most of the university’s buildings are situated near the city centre, therefore, academic activities of VMU and the celebrations of the community have become an inseparable part of Kaunas’ daily life.

The researchers and students at VMU initiate various campaigns and projects, which contribute to the formation of the city’s image and make its name famous both nationally and internationally. VMU is the partner of the annual Kaunas International Film Festival, Kaunas Dance Theatre AURA, World Lithuanian Youth Association, global student organisation AIESEC and other institutions. The city’s culture is also kept alive by annual events held by university itself: VMU Jazz Connections Festival, Spring Festival, etc. Today the cultural life in Kaunas remains alive, diverse and attractive. Without Kaunas, it would be hard to understand both the history and the current affairs of Lithuanian culture.

It is said that to get to know the culture of Kaunas a little better, to familiarize yourself with the collections of its museums and art galleries, the architecture, monuments, parks and the defensive ring of forts, you would need about a week. Nevertheless, for a starter tour of Kaunas, it would be enough to see just the most important cultural landmarks in the city.

Most countries have at least one cosy city which has flourished after giving birth to a university. To this day, these cities remain a strong attraction because of their exceptionally creative and youthful academic atmosphere, exuding an aura of intellectuality. In the United Kingdom, such a rare gem of academic spirit is none other but Oxford; likewise, Italy has Bologna, Poland has Kraków and Estonia has Tartu. Having served as the provisional capital during one of the most important periods of our country‘s history, Kaunas may also be dubbed the most academic city of Lithuania.

Kaunas Castle Built in the late 13th century, it is the oldest brick castle in Lithuania and the first one in Kaunas. Kaunas Castle played a significant role in the defence system of the city, suppressing the attacks of the Crusaders and their further movement into Lithuania, including the capital Vilnius. In 1362, after a long siege, the Crusaders destroyed the castle; however, it was later rebuilt and fortified. Kaunas Castle lost its strategic significance after the Battle of Žalgiris (Grunwald).

Town Hall {Rotušės a.}Often called the White Swan of the city, the Kaunas Town Hall combines elements of Gothic, Baroque and early Classicism styles. In the Middle Ages, the Town Hall was the centre of the city: its square served as the marketplace and the location of various festivities and executions of criminals. After the re-construction of the building in 1973, the Town Hall was turned into the Wedding Palace, while the Museum of Ceramic Art settled in its basement.

St. Francis Xavier Church and Jesuit Monastery {Rotušės a. 7, 8, 9} This late Baroque style church was constructed in the early 17th century. In 1787, it was transferred to the Order of Franciscan Monks, later it served as an Orthodox Church, Alexander Nevsky’s Cathedral and a Technical College. In 1990, the Jesuit Community regained the church.

Kaunas Cathedral {Vilniaus g. 26}It is the only Gothic style church in Lithuania, using Basilica design. Reconstructed a number of times, the church has acquired architectural features of the Renaissance and Baroque. The Cathedral has 9 altars and crystal-type arches in the sacristy.

Monument to Vytautas the Great {at the turn of Laisvės al. and L. Sapiegos g.}This monument was unveiled in 1932 in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania. Created by sculptor Vincas Grybas, it first stood in Panemunė, but was destroyed in the Soviet years. After the restoration of independence, it was rebuilt at the junction of Laisvės alėja and Sapiegos street.

St. Michael the Archangel Church {Nepriklausomybės a. 14}This is a neo-Byzantine style building with architectural traits of the Orthodox sanctuary. The church was designed and constructed by Russian architects and built for the Kaunas military garrison. Later it functioned as an art gallery, until it was turned into a Catholic church.

Kaunas Funiculars {Skriaudžių g. 8 ir Aušros g. 6}Kaunas is the only city in Lithuania which has funiculars, one of the oldest means of transport. The funiculars in Žaliakalnis and Aleksotas are used for two purposes – transportation and pleasure trips. The funicular in Aleksotas, which was recently repaired and is now functioning again, links the old part of the city with the slopes of Aleksotas which offer a beautiful view of the city. The funicular of Žaliakalnis goes up from downtown to the monumental Christ’s Resurrection Church, the roof of which also provides a spectacular panorama of the city.

Statue of Liberty {Vienybės a.}This sculpture is the symbol of Lithuanian Statehood. It was inaugurated in 1928, destroyed during the Stalinist regime and restored in 1989.

Vilniaus Street It is the most beautiful and the busiest street in the Old Town, intended only for pedestrians. Long time ago it used to be the main road leading to the Kaunas Town Hall. The majority of its buildings have survived since the 16th century and many of them have been reconstructed.

Vytautas' the Great Church {Aleksoto g. 6} This church was built in the 15th century, which makes it the oldest one in Kaunas. It is one of the first Gothic brick buildings of cross-shaped layout in Kaunas. The building belonged to Franciscan monks and was used as a warehouse of weapons during the Napoleonic Wars.

The House of Thunder {Aleksoto g. 6}One of the most original buildings of the flaming Gothic architecture, The House of Thunder was constructed in the 15th century for Hanza merchants. In the 19th century, a statue of Thunder was found in one of the walls, which is why it was designated a pagan temple. The first Kaunas Drama theatre was established in the house in 1844. Now the House of Thunder belongs to the Jesuit High School.

Laisvės alėja {Laisvės al.}One of the longest pedestrian-only streets in Europe (1.7 km), connecting the old and the new parts of the city. Its beginning and end precisely indicate the directions of the East and the West.

Garden of Military Museum {Vienybės a.}Monumental busts of famous Lithuanian writers and politicians were unveiled here. The Eternal flame and wooden crosses commemorate those who lost their lives for the independence of Lithuania.

Kaunas Zoo {Radvilėnų g. 21}This is the only zoological garden in Lithuania. It is set up in the old oak grove and has around 270 species of animals and birds.

Pažaislis Monastery {T. Masiulio g. 31}One of the most beautiful architectural ensembles of the Baroque style in Lithuania, the Pažaislis Monastery was built in the 17th century as a Camaldoli Abbey under the supervision of Italian masters from Florence. Kaunas Dance Theatre “Aura” {M. Daukšos g. 30a.}Perhaps the most spot-on description of this theatre was offered by conductor Birutė Letukaitė, who addressed all lovers of dance: “Let’s knock down banality and cheap popularity, ephemeral fluff and overplayed music, constrained notions and timeworn ideas, and even our own laziness! We can, we want, we are different!”. “Aura” is the oldest and the most experienced modern dance collective in Lithuania, recognized and awarded in various international contests of modern dance. National Kaunas Drama Theatre {Laisvės al. 71} The long history of this teatre began in 1920. It was the first professional state theatre in Lithuania. Whether in the Soviet era or during the years of independence, the theatre has always welcomed the greatest creators of Lithuanian theatre – Andrius Oleka-Žilinskas, Mstislavas Dobužinskis, Michai-las Čechovas, Henrikas Vancevičius, Jonas Jurašas, Jonas Vaitkus, Gytis Padegimas, Gintaras Varnas, Vidmantas Bartulis and others. Kauno Marios Regional Park {Miškininkų g. 2, Vaišvydava, Kaunas District}Artificially made Kauno Marios (Kaunas Lagoon), covering a total area of 63,5 km², was created in 1959. The open-air Folk Museum, Pažaislis Monastery and Kaunas Yacht Club are located nearby.

Kaunas State Musical Theatre {Laisvės al. 92}Established in 1940, this theatre is faithful to its longtime tradition of showing plays encompassing all genres of the musical theatre stage – operas, operettas, musicals, ballets, dance plays, plays for children. New creations by renowned Lithuanian theatre conductors, directors and painters are born here. The theatre is also intensely collaborating with foreign artists. Some of the best Lithuanian opera soloists sing during the shows in the repertoire of the theatre. Kaunas Chamber Theatre {Kęstučio g. 74a}It is a municipal stock drama theatre, which has acquired the status of a professional theatre in 1986. Every year, Kaunas Chamber Theatre prepares 3 premieres (one of them is always a play for children). The shows are different in genres and form. They in-clude theatre plays-games “Blaise“ and “Hot Choco-late”, G. Tabori’s post-modern “Peepshow”, Ionesco’s absurdist dramas, Pushkin’s masterpiece “The Queen of Spades”, psychological play “Antigone in New York”, phantasmagoric “Virgin Marriage”. Kaunas State Puppet Theatre {Laisvės al. 87a.}While almost the entire repertoire of the theatre is dedicated to children, some events for the older public are also organized. A special literature room “The Youngest Son” is functioning at the Little Hall since 2001, attracting senior high school pupils, teachers and university students. Kaunas Little Theatre {M. Daukšos g. 34}Located in a mysterious place in the Old Town, emitting aroma of cosiness and charming peculiarities, Kaunas Little Theatre was established in 1992 as an extravagant response to academic stability. The repertoire is dominated by productions of works created by modern authors in various genres – anything from tragicomic dramas to intriguing, unusual plays. Mykolas Žilinskas Art Gallery {Nepriklausomybės a. 12}Named in memory of famous collector Mykolas Žilinskas (1904–1992), who has vastly contributed to the enrichment of Lithuanian art collections. Exhibited here are the most valuable foreign art collections of the M. K. Čiurlionis’ museum: fine arts of Ancient Egypt, applied arts in Europe from 17th to 20th century, Italian paintings in 17th and 18th century, painting in Western Europe during the second half of 19th century and the entire 20th century, painting and sculpture of Baltic countries in the first half of 20th century. Three halls of the gallery are intended for changing exhibitions by Lithuanian and foreign artists. Events of the annual Kaunas Biennial Textile are also held here.

Kaunas Ceramics Museum {Rotušės a. 12}Visiting the impressive vaults of the Town Hall, one is introduced to the historical development of Lithuanian ceramics and porcelain. Approximately 30,000 of archaeological salvage and other findings, collected during excavations of Kaunas Old Town and its surroundings, are preserved here. The museum is also organizing exhibitions by modern masters of ceramics.

Juozas Zikaras Memorial Museum {J. Zikaro g. 3}The exposition here consists of the famous sculptor’s Juozas Zikaras’ (1881–1944) creative heritage, which includes the well-known and appreciated statue “Freedom” (“Laisvė”) in Kaunas. The museum has been established at the home of the sculptor in 1999.

Devils’ Museum and Museum of A. Žmuidzinavičius{Putvinskio g. 64}The former home of the painter Antanas Žmuidzinavičius is currently the place of two museums. The first one is the only museum in the world dedicated to the devils, famed for its large collection of over 3000 exhibits. The collection of the devils has been started in 1906, when the first ever devil was donated to the museum by a famous priest and writer, Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas.The second one is a memorial museum of A. Žmuidzinavičius, where the works of the painter himself and his contemporaries are exhibited, as well as books, authentic furniture and a workshop.

Kaunas Picture Gallery {K. Donelaičio g. 16}Modern paintings, graphics and sculptures made by Lithuanians and emigrants since 1945 are exhibited in this gallery. Also, one can see the set of Eastern Art from the collection of Algimantas Miškinis, the office of the avant-garde movement “Fluxus” founder Jurgis Mačiūnas and changing exhibitions of modern arts.

M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum {Putvinskio g. 55}The museum collects, preserves, explores and promotes the creative heritage of the most famous Lithuanian artist and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911). Expositions of Lithuanian fine arts (16th–19th century) and Lithuanian folk art are available here as well.

Kaunas State Philharmonic{L.Sapiegos g. 5}Kaunas State Philharmonic holds various art events: symphonic and chamber concerts, jazz performances, family events, educational programmes for pupils, festivals and themed concert series, etc. In a year, Kaunas State Philharmonic organizes about 160 to 200 concerts. In the summer, from June to August, it hosts the Pažaislis Music Festival.

VMU Aula Magna {Gimnazijos g. 7}

The VMU Aula Magna became the location of numerous cultural and academic events after the restoration of the building of the VMU Faculty of Catholic Theology. In 2003, the city’s music scene was substantially livened up as the acoustically impressive hall of Aula Magna became a popular spot for holding chamber concerts. They are organized once a month by the Aula Magna Music Association and the Chamber Music Support Foundation.

Sugihara House {J. T. Vaižganto g. 30}

Before World War II, between 1939 and 1940, the vice-consul of the Japanese Consulate Chiune (Sempo) Sugihara resided in this house. Jewish people from Lithuania, Poland and Germany received Japanese transit visas from Sugihara, who saved almost 6000 innocent lives in this way. Currently the Sugihara House is both a museum and a public institution, offering a look at the exposition “Visas that saved lives” and serving as the location of the VMU Centre for Japanese Studies.

Kaunas Botanical Garden {Ž. E. Žilibero g. 6}

The Kaunas Botanical Garden can be found in Freda, in the former place of the Juzefas Godlevskis manor. A quiet park and a greenhouse hold an impressive collection of medicinal and ornamental plants.

VMU Great Hall {S. Daukanto g. 28}

This hall is a busy place – diploma awards ceremony, concerts, dancing and theatre plays are just a few examples of events organized here. Some of the most significant annual cultural events and festivals of Kaunas also take place here, such as Kaunas Jazz and International Festival of Modern Dance.

President Valdas Adamkus’ Library-Museum {S. Daukanto g. 25}

It was founded with participation of the President Valdas Adamkus himself, who is also VMU Honorary Doctor. The library-museum holds not just books but also various possessions of Valdas Adamkus: furniture, paintings, other interior items, sports trophies, diaries, archive containing mostly documents related to the President’s activities in the USA. The library seeks to become a centre of culture, science and arts which researches world Lithuanians and the political, economical and cultural life in Lithuania in late 20th and early 21st century.

The Music Academy {V. Čepinskio g. 5}

The building of the VMU Music Academy is worth a look not just because it is now swarming with crowds of musical talents seeking education – this is also a significant educational landmark in the history of Kaunas. Built in 1950s, it first served as a secondary school, later vocational school, until finally finding its purpose as the Kaunas Faculty of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in 1989. Now in the hands of Vytautas Magnus University, the academy continues its mission. Anyone who comes to visit this building is fascinated by the magnificent panoramic view of the Kaunas‘ Old Town seen from the second floor.

VMU Jazz Connections Festival

Since 2009, autumn is an especially exciting time for all fans of jazz in Kaunas – it is the time when VMU holds the annual festival Jazz Connections. The event always brings talented local and international performers, ambitious programme, remarkable atmosphere and all kinds of jazz. VMU Rector Prof. Zigmas Lydeka has found the connection here: “Creativity and freedom to experiment – these are the values that best describe both the university and VMU Jazz Connections”.

VMU History Hall and Museum of S. and S. Lozoraičiai {K. Donelaičio g. 58}

During the interwar period, this now completely renovated building housed the Ministry of Education and the Cabinet of Ministers. Today it is the location of the VMU History Hall and the Museum of S. and S. Lozoraičiai, the father and the son – the former was a diplomat and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, while the latter a diplomat and VMU Honorary Doctor. The museum exhibits personal belongings of the Lozoraičiai family, as well as the collected and maintained archives: video and audio tapes, documents, photos. Authenticity of the exposition allows to reconstruct the environment and spirit of the past times, highlighting the universal historical values through the presentation of these highly respectable people. VMU History Hall and other places of the university offer an exposition illustrating the history of the university and the building itself – archived documents, photos, their reproductions, historical artefacts, possessions and donated exhibits.

Art Gallery “101” {Laisvės al. 53}

Functioning since 2008, academic art gallery “101” at VMU plays an important role in the intellectual life of the city. Educational projects, lectures, film viewings and exhibitions here present the cultural and historical context of art, with the aim of enriching the life of the urban and academic community, facilitating critical dialogue and interdisciplinary interpretation of art and culture.

VMU Theatre {S. Daukanto g. 27}

This is the first professional university theatre in Lithuania and a new theatrical space which is dedicated to joint projects by prominent and promising young artists from Lithuania and abroad. The focus here is on the presentation of various forms of theatrical expression, the cultivation of audiences open to innovations, and the encouragement of innovative trends on stage and in new media art.

Simply by arriving to the university not by our own car, but on foot, by bike or public transport every day, we would significantly reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide into the environment. You can park your bike at the bicycle parking spaces in front of the university (K. Donelaičio g. 52).

Drink coffee only from non-disposable cups!

Get rid of disposable cups and acquire a non-disposable coffee cup for multiple use. You will find it especially comfortable to use in coffee-shops. Did you know that only 14 % of people in Lithuania consciously reduce the use of disposable items, whereas the total EU average is over 30 %. The time has come for you to do your part!

Write in the margins – we have already graduated from school!

Contrary to what we have been taught in school, there is now nothing wrong with writing text in the margins of the page. Think of all the paper that goes to waste every day due to this rule. Before printing anything, take some time to think if you really need it. Recycle your old studying materials and journals – remember, a ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees!

Give the elevator a break – use the stairs more often!

Conserve the energy of the elevator – better use your own! According to statistics, almost half of all the people in Lithuania do not do exercises. Thus, taking the stairs will help you stay healthy and beautiful.

The light won’t turn itself off – use the switch!

Conserve the light not only in your own home, but at the university as well. Did you know that in order to make 1 kw of electricity one needs 10 liters of oil?

Since 2008, Vytautas Magnus University is a partner of The European GreenLight Programme, an initiative of effective lighting in Europe. This initiative seeks to reduce the use of inside and outside lighting in Europe, thus also reducing pollution emissions and limiting the global warming.

Encourage the university community to preserve nature!

The community of the university can contribute to the conservation of the environment and nature in many ways. Various documents are available as computer files, uploaded to the intranet and the Internet – that way, the use of paper and printing costs can be reduced. A template for documents with "Go Green!" logo can be downloaded at www.vdu.lt/gogreen, as well as the image available separately.
