PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Parent/Teacher Afternoon Thank you to all our families who attended the Parent/Teacher Afternoon—it was a great roll up and really conveys how our community appreciates the strong home/school relationship we enjoy. As we had a number of staff absent, please do not hesitate to contact the school and make an appointment to either have a conversation over the phone or in person if required. Farewell to Year 12 Social Last night’s Social was fabulous and it was great to see students from Year 7 through to Year 12 having a great time. The farewell arch at the end of the night was certainly a highlight for our Year 12 students. Concerns Throwing food: Lately there has been a group of students throwing food at one another in the playground. While this is a waste of food and unhygienic, there is also an issue of someone possibly getting hurt if hit by a hard piece of fruit. Students caught displaying this behaviour will receive a caution the first time and further consequences if the behaviours persist. Students arriving late to school: students can only be given an approved leave from school to attend medical appointments. Absences due to sleeping in, hairdressers, missed the bus, having breakfast in town etc are recorded as unjustified as per Department of Education guidelines. Year 8 Vikings Projects Mrs McPherson showed me a ‘sneak preview’ of some of the amazing artefacts constructed by Year 8 students for their Vikings assignment. All the amazing projects will be on display at our Open Afternoon in Term 4.

Have a wonderful fortnight.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome to this issue of the KHS Newsletter. This Term, our school will be participating in the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The surveys asks students, teachers, parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. These surveys are conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 26 August and 25 October 2019. I want to assure you that the surveys are confidential. The student survey: The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please contact me on 66321300 before Friday 20 September. Partners in Learning parent survey: The Partners in Learning parent survey helps to clarify and strengthen the important relationship between parent and school. The survey is designed to measure, assess and report insights from the parent point of view at the school and system levels. The focus of this NSW survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements. The survey is available in 23 languages. More information about the survey is available at: https://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/images/FAQs/TTFM_Parent_Survey_FAQs_Parent_and_Carers_T3_2019.pdf I encourage as many parents and carers as possible to complete the survey that gives additional data for our 2020 planning. To access the survey for our school go to: tellthemfromme.com/khs8189 The Teacher Survey: This survey will be completed by staff at our Week 9 Staff Meeting.

PDHPE HEALTH CORNER

In the previous article we looked at some the factors that impact on teenagers getting enough quality sleep for their growing and developing bodies. In this article, we will highlight the effects of teenage sleep deprivation and provide some useful tips for preventing this health impacting situation. As stated in the previous article, the developing brain of a teenager needs somewhere between eight and 10 hours of sleep each night. In the event that this is not occurring on a regular basis then the effects of chronic (ongoing) sleep deprivation may include: · concentration difficulties

· mentally ‘drifting off’ in class

· shortened attention span

· memory impairment

· poor decision making

· lack of enthusiasm

· moodiness and aggression

· depression

· risk-taking behaviour

· slower physical reflexes

· clumsiness, which may result in physical injuries

· reduced sporting performance

· reduced academic performance

· increased number of ‘sick days’ from school because of tiredness · truancy While this all sounds a bit too familiar, all is not lost as sleep deprivation is quickly turned around with a few nights of quality rest. So where to start…well, firstly, discuss the issue with your overtired adolescent from a perspective of wanting the best for them and then open them up to the following ideas: · Allow your child to sleep in on the weekends.

· Encourage an early night every Sunday. A late night on Sunday followed by an early Monday morning will make your child drowsy for the start of the school week.

· Decide together on appropriate time limits for any stimulating activity such as homework or screen time. Encourage restful activities during the evening, such as reading.

· Avoid early morning appointments, classes or training sessions for your child if possible.

· Help your teenager to better schedule their after-school commitments to free up time for rest and sleep.

· Assess your teenager's weekly schedule together and see if they are overcommitted. Help them to trim activities if they are.

· Encourage your teen to take an afternoon nap after school to help recharge their battery, if they have time.

· Work together to adjust your teenager’s body clock. You may like to consult with your doctor first.

If, as a parent, you have greater concerns for your child’s sleeping habits, there are plenty of support networks out there to provide further advice and assist – all it takes is a quick appointment with your local GP to get started, or by contacting your local sleep clinic. In the next article, we will look at ways teenagers can adjust their own behaviour to make sure they are getting the rest they needs to play, learn and work well! Until then, remember – a quality life all begins with good health!

On Tuesday 10th September during lunch the staff challenged our Year 12 students to a volleyball game.

The students lead off with stronger service and returns and looked set to crush the staff who had a communication and coordination breakdown! Staff rallied and came close but Year 12 proved the better team, winning round 1.

Next set: all students and staff took to the court (approx. 15 per side) for a free-for-all. Staff were victorious this time. Spectators were entertained and it was a fun way to farewell Year 12 as they complete their final term prior to the HSC.

Our Year 11 students, along with Mr Stewart and Mrs Bryant have just returned from a week at Jindabyne. They travelled down by bus, leaving Sunday night (25th August) and returned home Friday 30th August all looking very tired, but happy. First stop was Canberra, where they took part in a tour of Parliament House, The High Court of Australia and visited the Australian War Memorial. They stayed at Bullocks Flat later that evening and got some well deserved rest. All students had a wonderful time and would like to thank both Mr Stewart and Mrs Bryant for giving them such a wonderful opportunity.

I hope year 12 have relaxed slightly after completing their trial HSC exams and wish them well in their last few weeks of school.
