Hello Again,November 24, 2012

It’s nearly 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Our governing bodies seem to spend most of their

time, or is it our time, as we are paying for it? – passing new laws. How about a new law that

says, “Five o’clock in the morning is too early to get up.”

Naturally this new law, like all others, would have to learn to bend a little. It should not

apply when we’re going hunting, fishing, motorcycling, golfing, or any of the other

constitutional guaranteed bendable rights, or if your wife wants to get up before 5:00 to do

the laundry.

On the other hand our village seems to have an unusual number of youngsters. The

senior-grand folks claim it’s due to a train that comes through just before 5:00 in the

morning. Honking its horn, it’s too early to get up and too late to go back to sleep.

Election is over and this year is nearly over. Over 27 million citizens did not have a reason

to get up early – they did not have a job to go to. Maybe in the next four years we can

increase that changer benefit to cover 50 million. If minimum wage continues to increase,

several more will be able to stay in bed mornings.

Will Rogers, the world famous American humorist, said he did not have to make up jokes

about politicians. All he had to do was read the daily newspapers and quote the already

published truths.

Writing can be a time-consuming chore. I’ve learned that if you steal from one author it’s

plagiarism but if you steal from many it’s research.

This “Hello Again” is the sort of writing that gives failures a bad name. If you copy and

publish this line, it will be plagiarism.

While chatting with a lawyer friend about the national election, I said, “All of the socialists

hate me.” He replied, “That’s ridiculous. Every socialist hasn’t met you yet.”

This morning I put on a pair of pants. When I put on my shirt, would it have been proper to

say a pair of shirts?

I found a ballpoint pen with a “Crosby Group” logo. Our son is a lawyer and CEO of “The

Crosby Group.” Every time I use the pen to add 2 + 2, the sum comes up to 5 and sometimes

to 3. Then I realized it must be the one his office uses while billing their clients. When Chuck

was asked, “How could the sum of 2 + 2 ever come to 5?” as a good lawyer he answered, “It

can be whatever you want it to be.”

Minutes worth of history: The Indian Castle Church was built by Sir William Johnson in 1769

and at his own expense. With a Fort Plain address, a few miles west of Fort Plain it was built

on land used as a stronghold by the Indians as early as 1642.

For the past two years you have been subjected to some of my Irish blarney. I must

confess that I only resort to blarney when the truth doesn’t suit or when the truth needs a

helping hand by a friend.


Now listen carefully, I have a tale to spin. I admit I have on occasion attempted to baffle

you with blarney, but true Irish blarney could never do justice to this chatter. Possibly a

mixture of good old Yankee bull with a dash of blarney. Lets call it Bull-larney. With this short

notice it will have to suffice.

I was told by a truly unreliable source that he knows absolutely, with certain positivity,

that he has found out what Jolly Old Santa does during the spring, summer, and fall to earn

enough money to pay his elves for all of those toys and feed for his reindeer.

Don’t spread this around – especially to the farmers – it might end up hurting Santa’s

business. Honestly – he told me Santa is a cattle dealer and drives a big red cattle truck.

Sometimes he can be seen eating breakfast at the Hungry Bear Café near St. Johnsville.

To me this makes sense. It must take a lot of money to be so generous. If his sleigh was

pulled with cows or horses, they would be too heavy on our roofs.

I have been sitting here wearing my best writer’s cardigan, trying to conjure up some funny

material and all I could come up with is the true revelation about Santa.

Well until next time, put another log on the fire. Call someone that you owe money to and

hope he’s not home. Leave a message, “The check is in the mail.” Your phone message will be

as Bull-larney free as this chatter about our old friend Santa.

I’m sure you, your family and friends will have a bountiful Christmas loaded with gifts. Our

country’s leaders have taught us how to make this bounty happen. If you don’t have enough

money to cover your bills – borrow from China with interest and pay it back with more

borrowed funds.

I located the word Thanksgiving in a Webster’s New World Dictionary. Webster is an

accepted authority on words – on spelling, meaning, and usage. Webster on the word

Thanksgiving: “A formal public expression of thanks to God.”

Then I looked up the word “God”. Webster said, “The creator and ruler of the universe,”

which includes everything, including you and me. Then I continued with the word universe

which Webster states, “The totality of all things,” which again includes you and me.

Next I read John 3:16 in the Holy Bible and it said, “For God so loved the world, he gave

his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have

everlasting life,” which includes you and me.

God says in his word – the bible – he loves us. If we trust Webster to tell the truth,

shouldn’t we trust God even more?

Treat today as the first day of the remainder of your life. Make a

new friend and stay acquainted with your heavenly father and his son.

These pieces of hardware areall parts used in the care ofoxen, which were onceAmerica’s primary beasts ofburden, considered sturdierand heftier — therefore moreuseful — than even horses.

Ox hooves are cleft so oxshoes, far left in photo, were intwo separate pieces.

A heavy wooden yoke wasused to control and steer oxenand large bows were put aroundeach ox’s neck. To hold thesebows in place, heavy pins wereused. The two center items (and

close-up below) are differentversions of yoke pins. The leftpin is a later patented variety,the right an earlier type, mostlikely a typical prototype madeby one’s local blacksmith.

The item on the far right is

much less practical than theothers. These were aestheticand beautifying devices. If a per-son was especially proud of hisoxen’s great horns, these fancybrass balls were screwed on thetips!

members joinedtogether with alumnito present what wasdeemed to be a “verysuccessful” ham &fritter dinner onFriday, Nov. 16.

“We had about 15 ofour FFA membershelping to prepare andserve the dinner —and to clean up after-wards,” said MV FFAVice-President Steph-anie Arndt.

Advisors ChrisSmith and KristyShafer also assisted.

Alumni AdrianWarner, Mike Foster,Megan Shaut, JordanSela, and Mike Settleall helped with dinner.

“All of the alumnihelped in the kitchenat different times,”said Settle. “And DaveTalaba, St.Johnsville’s Tech-nol-ogy teacher, helpedcut up all of the ham.”

Settle said Talabahad come to pick up adinner and ended up

staying for 3 hoursvolunteering his help.

Arndt reportedapproximately 150dinners were sold.

“This was one of thebetter turnouts we’vehad for the Ham &

Fritter Dinner,” Settlestated. “I’ve heardquite a few good com-ments.”

Sandra Falk of FortPlain attended theevent with herhusband George.

“This is the firsttime we’ve been tothe dinner,” Falksaid. “My husbandand I both like frit-ters and this wasvery good!”

Falk said she enjoyssupporting the FFA.

“I think the FFAdoes a great manyuseful projects in thecommunity,” Falkcommented. “Mr.Settle has workedhard with the kids andit has made them veryresponsible.”

Proceeds from theannual event gotoward transportationto the NY State con-vention, conferences,camp, and transporta-tion for other FFAevents.

“We would like tothank the HC SmithBenefit Club fordonating the use oftheir facility for ourannual dinner,” saidArndt.

1. Before installing agenerator, be sure toproperly disconnect

When winter storms strike, do not drive unlessnecessary.

1. If you must travel, make sure you car is stockedwith survival gear like blankets, a shovel, flashlightand extra batteries, extra warm clothing, set of tirechains, battery booster cables, quick energy foodsand brightly-colored cloth to use as a distress flag.

2. Keep your gas tank full to prevent gasolinefreeze-up.

3. If you have a cell phone or two-way radio avail-able for your use, keep the battery charged and keepit with you whenever traveling. If you should becomestranded, you will be able to call for help, advisingrescuers of your location.

4. Make sure someone knows your travel plans.Winterize your vehicle

Preparing your vehicle for the winter season nowwill help ensure your vehicle is in good working orderwhen you need it most.

1. Have a mechanic check the following items onyour vehicle:

• Battery• Wipers and windshield washer fluid• Antifreeze• Ignition system• Thermostat• Lights• Exhaust system• Flashing hazard lights• Heater• Brakes• Defroster• Oil level2. Install good winter tires. Make sure the tires

have adequate tread. All-weather radials are usuallyadequate for most winter conditions. You may also

want to carry a set of tire chains in your vehicle forheavy snow conditions.

3. Keep a windshield scraper and small broom forice and snow removal and maintain at least a halftank of gas throughout the winter season.

4. Finally, plan long trips carefully. Listen to thelocal media report or call law enforcement agenciesfor the latest road conditions.

Drive safelyThe leading cause of death and injuries during

winter storms is transportation accidents.1. Before getting behind the wheel this winter sea-

son, every driver could learn a lesson from ourschool bus drivers. It is elementary, but we have tokeep our vehicles clear of ice and snow. Good visionis a key to good driving.

2. Plan your stops and keep more distance betweencars. Be extra alert. Remember, snowdrifts can hidesmaller children. Moreover, always match your speedto the road and weather conditions.

Trapped in a carWhat would you do if a blizzard trapped you on the

road?Here are some tips to follow:1. Stay in your car and wait for help to find you.2. Run your engine for short periods of time to stay

warm. Keep your down-wind window open and makesure your exhaust pipe is clear of snow.

3. Turn on the dome light at night when you arerunning the engine to signal rescuers.

4. Hang a brightly colored piece of cloth or piece ofclothing from your car.

5. Exercise from time to time by vigorously movingarms, legs, fingers and toes to keep blood circulatingand to keep warm.

Dress for the seasonWinter has arrived and you should dress for the season.1. Wear loose, lightweight, warm clothing in several layers. Trapped air between

the layers acts as an insulator. Layers can be removed to avoid perspiration andsubsequent chill.

2. Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent and hooded.3. Always wear a hat or cap on your head since half of your body heat could be

lost through an uncovered head.4. Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs from extreme cold.5. Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves because fingers maintain

more warmth when they touch each other.Physical exertion

Winter storm conditions and cold waves are the deadliest types of weather.Cold temperatures put an extra strain on your heart. Heavy exertion, such as

shoveling snow, clearing debris or pushing a car, increase the risk of a heart attack.To avoid problems, remember these tips:1. Stay warm, dress warm and SLOW DOWN when working outdoors.2. Take frequent rests to avoid over exertion.3. If you feel chest pain — STOP and seek help immediately.

Winter sports safetyNew York State offers an abundance of sports activities during the winter season.

From skiing and snowboarding to ice climbing, hiking and other outdoor pursuits,parents and children should follow the safety rules of the sport.

1. Most importantly, use the proper equipment and check to make sure every-thing is in proper working condition. A well-fitting ANSI/SNELL certified helmetwill assure a safer, more enjoyable wintertime experience whether you are skiing,sledding, snowboarding or skating.

2. Dress in multiple, lightweight layers to stay warm and dry while enjoying theoutdoors. Check the weather forecast but be prepared for anything.

3. If you are heading into the backcountry, never travel alone. Let someone knowyour route and estimated time of return.

4. Skiers and snowboarders should go on runs that are appropriate for their abil-ity. Stay in control at all times and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.Obey all posted signs and warnings.

5. No matter what sport you participate in, always focus 100 percent of your at-tention on the activity and the terrain you are on. Moreover, rest when you are tired.

Safe sleddingWinter is a fun time for children, but it also may be dangerous. Parents should

be aware of some simple safety tips for their children when they go sledding ortobogganing:

1. Children should never use streets or roads for sledding unless they areblocked off from traffic.

2. Children should sled only during daytime hours.3. Do not sled on icy hills. Sledding hills should be only snow covered.4. Avoid sledding over snow bumps or anything that may cause the sled to be-

come airborne.5. Never sled alone. An adult should always accompany small children.6. Children should stay out of the paths of other sledders. In addition, if the

slopes become busy, they should move off them quickly.Parents, if you are sledding with your children, follow these rules yourselves.

Safe skatingWinter is a fun time for children, but it also may be dangerous. Parents should

be aware of some simple safety tips for their children when they go ice-skating:1. If possible, skate at areas that have been approved and posted for ice-skating.2. Never skate alone. Always have at least two people present.3. Children should never be allowed to skate on a pond unsupervised.4. Remember ice thickness is never consistent on lakes and ponds. Water cur-

rents, particularly around narrow spots, bridges, inlets and outlets are always sus-pect for thin ice.

5. Stay away from cracks, seams, pressure ridges, slushy areas and darker ar-eas that signify thinner ice.

Oil Pressure LightThe oil pressure light is

The charging systemlight is usually a batterysymbol or the word “ALT”or “GEN.” It comes onwhen the vehicle electri-cal system is no longerbeing supplied power bythe alternator. If this lightcomes on, shut down allunnecessary electricalloads such as the radio,heater or air-condition-ing, then drive the vehicleto a repair facility imme-diately for further inspec-tion.

Check Engine LightThe check engine light

comes on when there is aproblem affecting the ve-hicle’s exhaust emis-sions. If the light comeson and stays on, make anappointment with anauto repair shop to havethe problem checked inthe near future. However,if the check engine lightbegins flashing repeated-ly, the catalytic converteris over-heating. Shouldthis occur, drive the vehi-cle to a repair shop im-mediately for further di-agnosis.
