December 15, 2012

Last night I was caught between a rock and a hard spot. About 10:00 when I was locking thekitchen outside door, the doorbell rang. I pulled the curtain back to see who was there and astrange fellow dressed in a green suit, topped with a pointy bright red hat wasstanding there with his back to me looking at the garage door.

I didn’t know whether to unlock the door or not but remembered the outer screen door wouldstill be latched. With that, he turned facing me with a great ear-to-ear smile and said“Greetings, Sir.” I instantly realized he would create no disturbances. I unlatched the door andstepped out into the portico.

“What can I do for you, sir?” I asked. His answer nearly bolted me over. “Sir,” he said. “I amthe head teamster of Santa’s Christmas Gift Sled and we are faced with an overwhelmingcatastrophe.” Still half stunned, I asked, “Who is the ‘we’ you are referring to?” and he said,“Santa and me, as well as the rest of his staff.”

“You see, sir, Santa’s entire reindeer team did not get their flu shot this fall and right downto Rudolph, every one of them is too sick to pull Santa’s sled. Santa said to tell you, or ratherask you, if he could use your bright three-wheeled cycle to pull his sled this year?”

After a moment or two I said yes, but how could he possibly use it? It has hydraulic brakesand not air brakes and uses gasoline. He replied, “Santa has already figured that out. He hadour blacksmith shop build an air hook and whenever he needs to stop, he will toss it out. Asfar as the need for gasoline fuel, you have to remember he will be driving downhill most of thetime when he leaves the North Pole and he always looks forward to stopping at Stewarts fortheir dark chocolate ice cream.”

With definite trepidation, I agreed Santa could use my three-wheeler and backed it out ofthe garage, turned it around facing William Street. With that, the reindeer herdsman jumpedon without turning left or right, went straight up into the sky and out of sight. With that I ranover to our lawn to get a better view and all I could see heading due north was a white jetstream, climbing above the clouds.

I imagine its motor will make more noise than the reindeer so if you listen carefully ChristmasEve, you may hear it landing on your roof. I just hope Santa’s air hook invention works. Andthat’s the way it happened, given a little bit of blarney or more. Possibly next spring when thesun comes back to the Mohawk Valley, you will get to see the three-wheeled red Spyder again.

I just checked the date on my cell phone. By the time you read this we will have less thantwo weeks to prepare for Christmas morning. Can you or would you ever have imagined thatcitizens of this most wonderful, bountiful nation would try to reduce the day of Jesus’ birthto have no more meaning than any of the national holidays set aside to honor GeorgeWashington, Abraham Lincoln, or Martin Luther King? Does this mean that Jesus Christ hasbeen reduced to their level or have they been raised to an equal position to Jesus? Now shouldthey be thought equal to the creator and savior of this world? Are they now gods?

Can you imagine an American soldier surrounded by the enemy in a foxhole over in a foreigncountry praying, “Dear George Washington,” or “Dear Abraham Lincoln,” or “Dear Martin Luther


King, please save me? The enemy is all around me. I do not want to die. I want to go home to

America and my family.”

Frankly, it would seem to me to be more intelligent to believe in Santa Claus with his team

of reindeer and Rudolph with his red nose than to accept the nonsense in believing we should

believe Christ Day - Christmas Day - should be replaced by the meaningless and heartless

word - holiday.

Even though time is running out, we can still buy a gift or even make one and give it to a

friend and loved one. It will say, “Merry Christmas and I do care.”

Always looking for a chance to make a quick buck, if I offer the red Spyder at auction as

the three-wheeler Santa (a world renown celebrity) used at Christmas, do you think I might

make a killing?

Before you accuse me of penning a batch of blarney — maybe you should watch for and

listen and hear what mode of transportation Santa is using this year.

Writing all of this serious chatter is very exhausting so if you don’t mind, I will intentionally

fill in with a little blarney.

My wife was complaining to her friend — the one we call the “cookie thief” — that I am

becoming quite forgetful. “He forgets his coat, keys, and even wallet. I sent him down to the

Little “M” for some lemons, and I don’t know if he’ll remember to come home.”

As the cookie thief was sympathizing with my wife, I burst into the kitchen yelling, “You’ll

never guess what happened to me! I won the million-dollar lottery!” “See,” my wife said, “He

forgot the lemons.”

This year, my wife suggested that we do not send material gifts to our 23 children,

grandchildren, and greats. “What should we send?” I asked. “Something we earned and

treasure,” she answered. “Money.”

The only problem I could see — is everyone would be receiving too little or too much which

depends upon who is sending or who is getting.

The good Lord has already given me a wonderful Christmas gift. My wife is back home and

her health seems to be improving every day. I wish I could thank all of you personally for your

loving wishes, cards, food, and prayers.

Thank you, and God be with you. My prayer for you is that you will receive all that you need

to be both healthy and happy, and that your prayers based on God’s will — will be answered.

Remember to say hello to your neighbors. If you send up a prayer for them, it will be heard.

Remember the old saying, “It is more blessed to give than receive.”

again and Santa andthe elves were out infull force despite thesteady rain inCanajoharie andPalatine Bridge onFriday evening, Dec. 7.

“It was a greatevening, even thoughwe had rain,” com-mented Canajoharie-Palatine Chamber ofCommerce President,Dolores Jacksland. “Ithink the merchantswere all happy. Therewere people in all ofthe stores, the streetswere filled and themuseum was filled.”

Elves Night Out hasbeen taking place in thevillage of Canajohariefor many years.

According toJacksland, the carol-ing around the treehas been taking placesince WWI, when itbecame a tradition inhonor of the military.“I’m quite sureBarbara Spraker wasresponsible for pro-moting that,”Jacksland acknowl-edged. This year it hadspecial meaning to usbecause the datecorresponded withPearl Harbor.”

Jacksland said theaddition of the elvesoccurred about 15years ago.

This year anothernew feature wasadded with the ringingof local church andold school bells.

The event beganwith the ringing ofhand bells byCanajoharie CentralSchool DistrictSuperintendent Debo-rah Grimshaw andSchool Board VicePresident Eric Trahanin Canajoharie’s vil-lage park, followed bychurch bells soundingfrom Stone Arabiathrough PalatineBridge and then mov-ing throughoutCanajoharie from onebuilding to another.

This tool is known as a firekindler and once was aninstrumental part of colonialAmerican homes. The endwas soaked in kerosene andused to start the fire in awood stove.

Wood was once the majorform of fuel and cooking. Theaverage colonial family used30-40 cords per year, theequivalent of one acre ofwoods, to heat their homesand to cook their meals.

Wood was the materialmost available and most eas-ily shaped, thus it could beused to make a wide varietyof manufactured goods. Evensmall machines such aslathes and printing presseswere almost entirely con-structed out of wood.

Colonial-type wood stoveswere huge, hot, and verysmoky. Because of this they

were very unpractical yetwere the only option the earlysettlers had. These stoveswere used until circa 1790s,when other successful inven-tions became realistic alter-natives.

Dying fires were kept alive

through the night as burningcoals and embers until veryearly the next morning, whenthey had to be stoked and fedagain. And when a stove wentout and needed to be relit, itwas this fire kindler that peo-ple used.

dozen myths aboutcredit and debt thatcan get consumersinto trouble:

Myth 1: It’s easy tofix bad credit. Truth:Negative informationcan stay on yourcredit report for aslong as specified bythe Fair CreditReporting Act law. Asimple delinquencyon a credit card canstay on your creditreport for a whop-ping seven years,and that starts 180days after theaccount firstbecomes delinquent.A bankruptcy willstay on your creditreport for 10 years.

Myth 2: Bankrupt-cy gets rid of all yourdebts. Truth: Stu-

dent loans, childsupport, alimonyand any taxes youowe that are lessthan three years oldare not dischargedby bankruptcy. Addi-tion-ally, not every-one is automaticallyapprov-ed for bank-ruptcy. Since 2005you’ll have to pass a“means test” to see ifyou qualify for bank-ruptcy or will receivea repayment planinstead.

Myth 3: A debt col-lector can’t contactother people, suchas your neighbors orfamily. Truth:They’re allowed tocall others to try todetermine where youlive and work andwhat your phonenumber is. Addition-ally, they can callyou at work unlessyou notify them that

Myth 4: A divorcedecree will relieveyou from your debts.Truth: Since thecreditor didn’t haveinput about how thedivorce settlementwas written, theydepend on the origi-nal contract to deter-mine who pays whatand when. No matterwhat the divorcedecree says, if youdon’t adhere to theterms of the originalcontract, the creditorcan report you delin-quent if you don’tpay.

Myth 5: Creditorscan’t change yourinterest rate. Truth:With just 45 daysnotice, a creditor canmake significantchanges to youraccount agreement,including raising

your interest rate.This can happen ifyour credit scoredrops, even if you’vecontinued to makepayments correctlyto that creditor.

Myth 6: Once yourcar is repossessed,you don’t have toworry about it any-more. Truth: Thatdepends whetherthere is a balancedue after the car issold at auction. If thecar doesn’t sell forenough to clear thewhole amount due,you are obligated forthe balance.

• If you claim early,that lesser amountstays with you for therest of your life. (Thereis a 12-month periodwhen you can pay

Still, if you get car-ried away with holidayspending, the season’s“Ho, ho, ho!” can turn into“Oh, oh, oh!” come Janu-ary when the bills arrive.

When holiday shop-ping, it’s important to findthe right balance of whento use plastic and whennot, and to understandyour credit status beforeyou give your cards aworkout. Fortunately,some planning and pre-cautions can help ensureyou use credit wisely this

holiday season.Before you start using

credit cards for holidayshopping, take a look atyour credit score and re-port. Knowing your cur-rent credit status willhelp you better under-stand how much (or little)credit you can afford touse this season. Dear Tammy: Anything that looks cozy, fun and safe for pets is a good bet. I’vealways appreciated even small gifts like a cute bandanna for my dog or small cat-nip toys for my cat. If you’re looking for gifts beyond stocking stuffers, here aresome that most pet owners will appreciate:

• Dog and cat beds: These range in price from about $15 on up to a few hundreddollars. Look for a sturdy fabric covering that is easy to brush fur from, and stuff-ing that can’t be easily pulled out and chewed on.

• Cat furniture: From a simple padded windowsill seat to “kitty condo” play com-plexes that cats can wander through, cat owners appreciate these combinationscratching posts and rest areas.

• Travel safety: A number of products have come on the market to keep dogs andcats safe in the car, from traditional travel crates to adapted seat belts that keepFido securely in his seat.

• Toys: For your daughter’s big dogs, sturdy chew toys are probably welcome. Istill really like Kong chew toys, which are nearly impossible to damage and can befilled with peanut butter or another treat.
