Hello Again,

“In the beginning.” These three words written in the English language may have

been read by more people than we could possibly imagine or believe.

In the beginning — what, where, who. Our civilization has moved along, changing

daily at such a fast rate that we almost cannot accept the line of thought that

everything we can see, every person we know or remember, had a beginning. A study

of history quickly reminds us that nearly everything also has an end which will

make room for a new beginning.

During our early education years, we learned about the early Pilgrims arriving on

this continent to be met by Native Indian people. How they built log homes, grew

crops, hunted wild game. Celebrated feast together and enjoyed their choice of

freedom, of community government, and religion.

Each in their own time passed into eternity only to be replaced by their offspring.

Each a new beginning.

This week we celebrate President’s Day. Remembering two of the great persons

in our nation’s history: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. A study of

history reveals the greatness of these two men. Washington remembered as the

first president of these United States. Henry Lee, Washington’s old cavalry

commander, delivered the eulogy at Washington’s funeral in 1799 including words

that everyone at that time understood and have been recorded and repeated for

over 200 years. “First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his country.”

Less we forget those great words were spoken during George Washington’s

funeral service. At the end of Washington’s walk in this life, his path left an

indelible imprint on this continent reaching across the oceans to all people in the

world. His life ended, but his living dream for our country went on forming this

greatest nation.

We also remember his great military genius during the Revolutionary War. The

great military general riding in uniform on his impressive white horse. At the

conclusion of the Revolutionary War, he retired to live the life

of a gentleman farmer only reluctantly to leave his well-earned

retirement to preside over the Constitutional Convention.

Once again, a new beginning to become the first president

of the United States of America. Once again stepping down

from the presidency in 1796. It has been said, he could have

chosen to become king of this country. Now, it is obvious he

understood it was God’s will that no one person should have

such power or that any government should control power of

Page 7: Valley Pennysaver 2.25.12

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • February 25, 2012 Page 7

that dimension over the nation he fought and served for. We can thank George

Washington for his part in setting up our nation and keeping us free of an all-

powerful governing body.

I wish we had space in this “Hello, Again” to chat about Abraham Lincoln. The

man — the president who 60 years later kept Washington’s dream of a great

nation glued together. Lincoln’s greatness preserved our nation as one nation of

many states, not one huge central all-powerful government. We don’t want a huge

federal government with a president acting as a king.

Yet this is 2012. What lessons can we draw from these two great historical

figures? Could it be — they were both given a challenge and dream?

Washington’s dream to found and help build a great nation based on

democracy with a representative form of government. Lincoln’s task and dream to

keep this infant country glued together as one nation.

Where did their dream, foresight, and strength come from? Remember the three

words, “In the beginning.” Now add the fourth, “In the beginning, God…” Do we need

to say more? If these two men could dream of a great nation and play a part in

causing it to happen, is it too much to believe that we collectively can dream about

the Palatine Corridor and make it happen? Dream, yes! Plan, yes! Act, yes!

No one will deny the country folks from upstate New York area a fun-loving bunch

of people who enjoy a good laugh.

An old upstate farmer with his team of horses was hauling a wagonload of

manure down a country road when he met an inmate from the local mental

institution.

“What are you going to do with all of that manure?” the inmate asked.

The farmer replied, “I’m going to put it on my strawberries.” “And they call me

crazy,” the inmate said, shaking his head. “I put sugar and cream on mine.”

Well it’s time to bank up the stove, empty the spittoon,

lock up the storefront and go home. So until next week, go

with God. I know he will continue to bless you and your

family.

Say hi to your neighbor and say a few words of prayer. God

will listen. You have that promise.

From Florida,

Fred Lee and the Lee Family

If there is a need tofill or a problem to besolved, rest assured, someone is bound tocreate a gadget thatgets the job done.

In the 18th and19th centuries whenseamstresses neededa “third hand” the“sewing bird” wasinvented.

Also known as asewing clamp, hem-ming clamp, or, youguessed it, a thirdhand, the sewing birdwas used to attachone end of a piece ofcloth firmly to a table. This enabled theseamstress to holdtheir sewing taut withone hand whilestitching with theother.

In America, the first

sewing birds werecalled “grippers.” Notused widely untilmid-19th Century, they became popularas a luxury item, which a young manwould present to hisintended bride sever-

al months before thewedding. These weremade in many vari-eties — birds with orwithout a pin cush-ion, on a spindle ornot, and in the shapeof numerous animals.

After the invention

of the sewingmachine, the need forgrippers was dimin-ished, but they werestill manufactured asnovelties. The sewingbird show here is fromthe collection of Willis“Skip” Barshied Jr.

TAX GUIDE

Although mostincome you receive istaxable and must bereported on your fed-eral income taxreturn, there are someinstances whenincome may not betaxable.

The IRS offers thefollowing list of itemsthat do not have to beincluded as taxableincome:

• Adoption expensereimbursements forqualifying expenses

• Child support pay-ments

• Gifts, bequestsand inheritances

• Workers’ compen-sation benefits (someexceptions may apply;see Publication 525,Taxable and Nontax-able Income)

• Meals and lodgingfor the convenience of

your employer• Compensatory

damages awarded forphysical injury orphysical sickness

• Welfare benefits• Cash rebates from

a dealer or manufac-turer

Some income maybe taxable under cer-tain circumstances, but not taxable inother situations.Examples of itemsthat may or may notbe included in yourtaxable income are:

• Life insurance Ifyou surrender a lifeinsurance policy forcash, you mustinclude in income anyproceeds that aremore than the cost ofthe life insurance poli-cy. Life insurance pro-ceeds, which werepaid to you because of

the insured person’sdeath, are generallynot taxable unless thepolicy was turned overto you for a price.

• Scholarship orfellowship grant Ifyou are a candidatefor a degree, you canexclude from incomeamounts you receiveas a qualified scholar-ship or fellowship.Amounts used forroom and board donot qualify for theexclusion.

• Non-cash incomeTaxable income maybe in a form otherthan cash. One exam-ple of this is bartering, which is an exchangeof property or services. The fair market valueof goods and servicesexchanged is fully tax-able and must beincluded as income on

Form 1040 of bothparties.

All other items —including incomesuch as wages, salaries, tips andunemployment com-pensation — are fullytaxable and must beincluded in yourincome unless it isspecifically excludedby law.

These examples arenot all-inclusive. Formore information, seePublication 525, Tax-able and NontaxableIncome, which can beobtained at theIRS.gov website or bycalling the IRS at 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

cane lamp that isinscribed on theunderside “L&LWMC1973.” Can youplease identify it andgive me the name of adealer who buys suchlamps. — Lloyd, Sur-prise, AZ

A: Your lamp wasmanufactured byLoevsky and LoevskyWhite Metal Castings,a company based inNew Jersey that spe-cialized in reproduc-tion lamps and fix-tures. It closed inabout 1978. Yourlamp was made in1973, and is, indeed,a reproduction andnot rare. I have seensimilar lamps atantique malls and in

thrift shops priced forless than $50.

Q: I have a book inthe “Tell a Tale” seriesentitled “Little BlackSambo.” I also havethe Viewmaster reelthat goes with it. Canyou help me deter-mine the value? —Florence in Dubuque,Iowa

A: Before I answeryour question, let’sreview a little literaryhistory. The charac-ter of Little BlackSambo was intro-duced in 1898 byHelen Bannerman, the daughter of aScottish minister andthe wife of a surgeonin the British Army inIndia. The story shewrote was set in Indiaand vividly describesa young boy’s

encounters with fourtigers. The book wasso popular, she fol-lowed it with threesequels: “Little BlackQuibba,” “Little BlackQuasha” and “LittleBlack Mingo.”

It wasn’t until the1930s and ‘40s that“Little Black Sambo”began to take on neg-ative racial connota-tions. The book hasgone through dozensof editions, but Ibelieve your “Tell aTale” version is prob-ably from the 1950s.If so, it is worth about$25. The reel youhave might be valuedat about $10. One ofmy favorite referencesin this field of collect-ing is “The Art andHistory of BlackMemorabilia” by

Larry Vincent Buster(Potter, $34.95).

Q: I would like tofind the value of anAlice Caviness neck-lace that was given tome in 1957. — Char-lotte, Okeechobee, FL

A: Janet Gaynor isthe owner of AZillionSparklz and hasbought, sold andappraised vintagecostume and fineestate jewelry formore than twodecades. She mightbe able to help youdetermine the retailvalue of your neck-lace. Her contactinformation is P.O.Box 35038, Tucson,AZ 85740, andwww.sparklz.com.

I recently purchasedan old English c0hestof drawers at auctionand when I got ithome I noticed a num-ber of small roundholes on the surface ofsome of the drawersides. What causesthese holes andshould I be worried?

The holes you areseeing were caused

by a wood boring bee-tle also commonlycalled wood wormand powder post bee-tle. Since this piecewas made in Eng-land, Anobium punc-tatum is the mostlikely culprit. Theseholes are made as theadult beetle emergesfrom wood where ithad spent its earlierlife in the larval stage, consuming wood andcreating a network oftunnels in your chestof drawers.

Whether youshould be concerneddepends on the extentof the tunneling andif it is ongoing. Gener-ally powder post bee-tles prefer newerwood, which has ahigher concentrationof starch, so chancesare that your chest ofdrawers is no longerinfested. However ifyou notice fine saw-dust-like materialsifting out of the exitholes, or if the exitholes look like theyhave been freshlydrilled, you may havecause for concern.

REALESTATE

Make your home stand out with new exterior trim(ARA) — With the

housing market show-ing its first signs ofimprovement in years, many homeownershope to attract inter-ested buyers thisspring. Replacing oldor damaged exteriortrim is a great way tofreshen up your hometoday and make itstand out among oth-ers tomorrow.

After location andprice, curb appeal isone of the top factorsfor choosing a home.Curb appeal sells 49percent of all homes, according to theNational Associationof Realtors. In fact, even before puttingyour home on the

market, your realtoroften will recommendways to make it lookits very best from thestreet. The evaluationprocess starts as soonas buyers pull up.

“Exterior trim thatis cracked, rotted, peeling or falling apartgives a bad firstimpression,” says BobMerrill, president andCEO for Chicago-based CMI, whichmakes MiraTEC Treat-ed Exterior CompositeTrim. “Homes withbeautiful exterior trimhave that wow factorthat attracts buyers.Making a good firstimpression can be thedifference betweengetting a signed con-

tract and keeping the‘For Sale’ sign in theyard.”

Inspect your trim Spring is an ideal

time to inspect yourhome’s exterior trim.Walk around yourhouse and look at thetrim around your win-dows and doors, at thecorners, and near theroofline. Warningsigns of potentialproblems includepeeling or blisteringpaint, green algae, warped boards, andspongy or soft spots.Check for termitedamage too; theycause more damage toU.S. homes than fire, floods and stormscombined.

If the trim is dam-aged beyond repair, the only solution isreplacement. Depend-ing on your carpentryskills, replacing exte-rior trim can be a do-it-yourself project, butit is often best to hirea local contractor orremodeler.

Before you put yourhouse on the market, take a good look atyour exterior trim. If itdoesn’t look inviting atfirst glance, replacingit now could helpmake your homestand out on theblock. To learn more, visit www.mirate-ctrim.com.

It doesn’t matter ifthe car you’re drivingis new or old, big orsmall. There are pre-ventive maintenancesteps every vehicleowner can take tomake sure their car

is as “green” or envi-ronmentally friendlyas possible, accord-ing to the Car CareCouncil.

By following a fewsimple preventivemaintenance steps,

Steps to a “Greener” car

you can help protectthe environment byimproving gasmileage, which inturn saves money atthe pump.

Keep your carproperly tuned foroptimum perform-ance. Regular tune-ups, maintenanceand having clean airfilters will help yourcar pollute less andburn less gas. Get-ting a tune-up canimprove gas mileageby an average of 4percent. Simplychanging the car’sair filter can improveefficiency by 10 per-cent. Fixing a seriousmaintenance prob-lem, such as a faultyoxygen sensor, canimprove gas mileageby as much as 40percent.

Drive Smart – Ifyou have to driveyour car, recognizethat how you drivehas a lot to do withfuel economy. Avoidsudden starts andstops and go thespeed limit. Jerkyand aggressive driv-ing decreases yourmiles per gallon(MPG) and increaseswear and tear onyour vehicle. Mini-mize unnecessarymiles by combiningerrands in one trip.

Lighten the Load –Get the junk out ofthe trunk and thestuff out of your car, with the exception ofemergency itemssuch as a spare tire, flares and a first-aidkit. Extra itemsweigh the vehicledown and cause anincrease in gasusage.

Regularly check

and replace dirty airfilters. An air filterthat is clogged withdirt, dust and bugschokes off the airand creates a “rich”mixture – too muchgas being burned forthe amount of air –that wastes gas andcauses the engine tolose power. Replac-ing a clogged air filtercan improve yourcar’s performance, but not miles per gal-lon.

Have spark plugschecked andreplaced if neces-sary. A vehicle canhave four, six oreight spark plugs, which fire as manyas three milliontimes every 1,000miles. This results ina lot of heat, electri-cal, and chemicalerosion. A dirtyspark plug also caus-es misfiring, whichwastes fuel.

Maintain the cool-ing system. A coolingsystem thermostatthat causes theengine to run toocold will lower thefuel efficiency of acar by as much asone or two mpg. There also areimproved radiatorcaps on the markettoday that allow thecooling system tooperate at a highertemperature beforeboiling over, increas-ing the system’s effi-ciency and reducingemissions

(NAPSA) — Learn-ing a few facts abouta refrigerant com-monly used in airconditioners couldhelp you keep yourcool. The refrigerant,R-22, is being phasedout as part of aninternational environ-mental agreement todiscontinue the use ofHCFCs, or hydrochlo-rofluorocarbons. Ifyou own an R-22-based air-condition-ing unit, here are afew facts you need toknow:

• If your systemdoes not leak or needrepair, it may notnecessarily have anegative impact onthe environment. Sothere is no need to

replace your systemuntil you are readyfor a new unit.

• Most air-condi-tioning systems aredesigned to last atleast 10 years.Because R-22 isavailable until 2020,it’s wise to budgetaccordingly.

• R-22 is still one ofthe most energy-effi-cient refrigerants onthe market. Purchas-ing a new unit coststhree to four timesmore than repairingexisting units andmay not be mandato-ry. Please plan aheadbefore you pay for acostly replacement. For more information, visit www.ACfast-facts.com.

There are preventivemaintenance stepsevery vehicle ownercan take to make suretheir car is as “green”or environmentallyfriendly as possible, according to the CarCare Council.

Tire Checks –According to the CarCare Council, aroundtwo billion gallons ofgas each year could besaved if the tires onevery American’s car

were properly inflated.Optimal tire pressurefor your vehicle is list-ed in the owner’s man-ual. Tires that are notproperly inflated addrolling resistance thatmakes the engine workharder to move thevehicle. All of thisincreases fuel costs asmuch as three to fivecents per gallon, andincreases the risk ofengine damage.

Gas Caps and Fill-

Ups – Check your vehi-cle’s gas cap. Approxi-mately 17 percent ofvehicles on the roadhave loose, damaged ormissing gas caps, causing 147 milliongallons of gas to vapor-ize every year. Toppingoff your gas tank whenfilling up your car canalso release harmfulvapors into the envi-ronment.

A/C Maintenanceand Use – The A/C

system should beinspected annually, during which a techni-cian checks pressuresto test operation, refrigerant charge andoutlet temperatures.Use the window to helpkA45eep the car cool.

Vehicle FuelSystem - By properlymaintaining your vehi-cle’s fuel system, suchas replacing your car’sfuel filter every twoyears or 24,000 milesand having your fuelinjectors flushed ourevery 30,000 miles, you will not only havea cleaner, ‘greener’ car,but you will savemoney at the pump.”

Emission systems -Emission systems

control a vehicle’semissions, exhaustand pollutants usingan array of sensors, computerized enginecontrols and theexhaust components.Emission systems sub-stantially reduceharmful gases such ascarbon monoxide (CO),unburned hydrocar-bons (HC) and oxidesof nitrogen (NOx), andprevent harmful gaso-line vapors from escap-ing at the fuel tank.Your car’s emissionsystem keeps theengine running cleanlyand efficiently in allsorts of operating con-ditions, and keeping itin proper working con-dition can save moneyand protect the envi-ronment.

Maintain and repairyour car as outlined inthe council’s Car CareGuide. The guide helpsdrivers understandtheir car, the care itneeds, and when itneeds it and why. Sin-gle copies of the freeguide may be orderedhere on the Car CareCouncil Web site.

Automotive(NAPSA) — When it

comes to taking careof your car, keeping toa regular maintenanceschedule can be likeputting money in thebank.

That’s because reg-ular maintenance isan investment ofsorts. This is particu-larly evident when an

owner sells a car.Used cars with a doc-umented history ofregular service areusually worth more, toboth the buyer andthe seller.

That’s why, in addi-tion to getting themaintenance done, keeping records ofthat work is also

essential. Fortunately, a grow-

ing number of repairfacilities are nowreporting mainte-nance information toCarfax. Having thisdocumentation appearin the vehicle’s historycan help sellersdemonstrate that theyhave kept to the rec-
