Meet the executive for the Academic Year 2016-2017

Feature Article - Youth and Crime by UWI STAT St Augustine Corps

Crime is, without a doubt, a serious issue in Trinidad and Tobago, and the wider Caribbean region.

According to Daphne Phillips, the reasons put forth for the startling crime rates, include,

unemployment, our geographic location, general moral decline, weak family life, among other factors.

Youth violence is a high-priority, high-visibility concern across the Caribbean. Not only has violence escalated in most of the region in recent decades, but youth are also disproportionately represented in the incidence and severity of this trend, both as victims and as perpetrators (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime). To combat these issues, young persons must be properly equipped with the knowledge, skills and resources to become more effective leaders who are able to manage conflict in a responsible way. The Criminal Justice System (CJS) has been adversarial in nature, bent on punishment versus reward. We strongly recommend the use of restorative justice, which is an approach to problem solving that, in its various forms, involves the victim, the offender, their social networks, justice agencies and the community (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime). This approach seeks to effectively rehabilitate the former offender into society, rather than shun them.

The Caribbean region must re-evaluate the approach to the CJS moving it from retributive to restorative justice. There must be political will, financial resources and strong endorsement by various stakeholder groups in order to move forward in this regard. Young people must be effectively engaged in this process, as they would drive the improved system into the future.

Youth in crime and crime against youth, highlight the very challenges our youths face today, as a result youth must stand as one and let our voice resonate as one.
