How to obtain reliable and reproducible measurements

with the AURA handheld NIR

The AURA handheld NIR is a battery operated, hand-held, diffuse reflection NIR spectrometer for measuring constituents of solid samples in direct contact. It is also used for displaying and storing results and related data.

The AURA handheld NIR has a measuring window diameter of 38 mm. Due to the optical layout, a measuring spot of 13.5 mm is realized, which lies in the middle of the measuring window.

Sample presentation

The solid samples can be in the form of powder or meal or can be pasty or chunky. For a representative measurement of the sample, an appropriate sample presentation must be ensured. Consistent pressure during continuous and single scans is a prerequisite for good repeatability of the measurement results. By a suitable choice of a sample container, e.g. a bowl or a box, the sample can be ideally prepared for measurement.

Sample thickness in a sample container

Light in the wavelength range of NIR is penetrating the sample in a depth of several millimeters. Enough sample thickness in the sample container must therefore be ensured to avoid undesired reflection of the background of the sample container and thus a negative influence on the measurement result.

Measurement software

When the device is started, the ZEISS InProcess software is started automatically. The operating system of the internal computer can only be accessed by ZEISS customer service. Nevertheless, software updates can be performed by every customer by means of another computer. Detailed information can be found in the InProcess user manual.

Multiple single measurements or continuous scan?

The user is free to set-up a suitable method to examine the samples correctly. Two methods have been established: multiple single measurements and a continuous scanning measurement suitable for scanning larger areas. Product templates for both methods are available in the InProcess software.

Measuring procedure

A measurement is generally triggered by pressing the “Start measurement button” on the handle. The status LED on the back of the AURA handheld NIR changes from green (sensor is ready) to yellow (internal referencing in progress) to green, flashing (sensor is measuring). When using the continuous scan mode, the LED is continuously flashing in green. The sensor should be moved through the sample steadily and with constant pressure to get reliable results. The measuring time in the continuous scan mode should be at least 10 seconds. When the measuring button is released, the scan ends, and an average value is shown on the display. Please note: When scanning over uneven surfaces (e.g. tobacco leaves with ribs) there is a risk of tilting the sensor and thus falsifying the average values. When scanning powdery substances which are fine ground (e.g. coffee powder), the continuous scanning has disadvantages, since the sample can be pushed aside by the movement of the sensor and the sensor could sink into the powder.

Page 31: User Manual · User Manual | AURA handheld NIR – 2289-971 and 2298-955. 5 AURA handheld NIR. Safety instructions. 1 Safety instructions. The AURA handheld NIR has been designed

31User Manual | AURA handheld NIR – 2289-971 and 2298-955

Application noteAURA handheld NIR

The multiple single measurement mode is therefore often used in these cases. Whether 5, 7 or more single measurements are necessary to determine the heterogeneity of the sample must be worked out individually by the user.

Adapting the AURA product templates

The user can modify AURA product templates and do individual changes e.g. in the measurement process by entering sample name dialogs, adapting the number of scans to calculate averages, modifying the result display on the monitor or integrate new NIR calibrations. Detailed information on adapting product templates and products can be found in the InProcess user manual.

Export of measurement results

The measurement results are stored in the measurement history of InProcess and can be exported to an USB stick at any time. If an USB stick is used permanently, the results can be immediately and continuously exported to the USB stick. As an alternative to USB the integrated WiFi adapter can be used to connect to an external InProcess client to manage the measurement results from there. Detailed information on exporting results can be found in the InProcess user manual.

Installation of additional software

Additional software can only be installed by ZEISS customer service. This applies for installing a special driver e.g. for a wireless barcode scanner or for the installation of runtime libraries that are necessary for the use of calibration files.

Application note AURA handheld NIR

Four different development platforms for calibrations (Unscrambler from CAMO, Sensologic from Sensologic, GRAMS from Thermo Fisher Scientific and UCal from Unity) are currently supported by InProcess software. The installation of the corresponding runtime library, a so-called prediction engine, is free of charge, but a license is required and must be purchased to use it. Only the prediction engine GRAMS is preinstalled and free of charge.

2.2. Other Hazards

Appearance, Colour and Odor: Solid object with no odor. Primary Routes(s) of Exposure: These chemicals are contained in a sealed enclosure. Risk of exposure occurs only if the cell or pack is mechanically, thermally, electrically or physically abused to the point of compromising the enclosure. If this occurs, exposure to the electrolyte solution contained within can occur by inhalation, ingestion, eye contact and skin contact.

Potential Health Effect(s): Acute (short term): see Section 8 for exposure controls. In the event that this cell or pack has been ruptured, the electrolyte solution contained within the cell would be corrosive and can cause burns to skin and eyes. Inhalation: Inhalation of materials from a sealed cell is not an expected route of exposure. Vapours or mists from a ruptured cell may cause respiratory irritation. Ingestion: Swallowing of materials from a sealed cell is not an expected route of exposure. Swallowing the contents of an open cell can cause serious chemical burns to mouth, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract. Skin: Contact between the cell and skin will not cause any harm. Skin contact with the contents of an open cell can cause severe irritation or burns to the skin. Eye: Contact between the cell and the eye will not cause any harm. Eye contact with the contents of an open cell can cause severe irritation or burns to the eye. CHRONIC (long term): see Section 11 for additional toxicological data.

Interactions with other chemicals: Immersion in high conductivity liquids may cause corrosion and breaching of the cell or battery enclosure. The electrolyte solution inside of the cells may react with alkaline (basic) materials and present a flammability hazard. Potential Environmental Effects: Not Available.
