A new era. With these words school manage-

ment and staff described the proposedrenovations for Kuils River PrimarySchool. At 37-years-old, the school has seen many

leaners and staff come and go. Now, aftermany years of academic excellence andeven a fire nearly 20 years ago, the prefabri-cated building is being replace with a moresolid structure – something school person-nel here have welcomed with open arms.Peter du Plooy, school principal since

2012, especially is all smiles.“We came a long way.“There has always been a willingness to

help each other at this school. I am sure thatif I had been at another school, I would haveretired a long time ago,” Du Plooy says.

Du Plooy was one of the first grade 8learners at the school – back then calledstandard 6. Du Plooy explains that theschool ran up tomatric before Sarepta Highopened its doors nearly a decade later. The schoolwas originally named JanBos-

man Primary before the name, emblem andlogo change in 2003. “When I broke the newsabout the new building that is going to bebuilt, the excitement in the staffroom wastangible,” he remembers. The news was announced on 29 August

2013. Due to a lengthy tender process andseveral other factors it took more than twoyears for things to finally fall in place andgain momentum.Last week however, the first set of con-

struction vehicles drove onto the schoolgrounds, flattening the ground forwhatwillbecome brand new classrooms, two quads, toilets, a 1 200 seater hallwith ablution facil-ities and a tuck-shop, an administration

buildingwith a staffroomaswell as a soccerpitch.Joseph Jacobs, chairperson of the school

governing body (SGB), is equally excited.Jacobs, a former learner, told TygerBur-

ger though it is sad that took so long, he isnonetheless happy that things are actuallygetting done.“When I became chairperson, I heard that

a new school is going to be built. The oldschool has sentimental value, but I am alsoexcited because it’s a new era.“I am excited to be part of the project

steering committee as well as helping tooversee the project,” Jacobs says.He says the SGB and everyone including

the learners have shown excitement. “Weare looking forward to placing our kids ina permanent structure for years to come.”Zondelia Lombard-Swartz, deputy princi-

pal and secretary of the SGB, concurs.“For years we have been telling the chil-

dren they are getting a new building, nowthat things are in motion they are excitedto see it.“We are looking forward to a product of

excellence, not a mediocre thing.“We want to grow to greatness, like our

school motto suggests,” Lombard-Swartzsays.Millicent Merton, spokesperson for the

Western Cape education department, saysthe entire existingbuildingwill be replaced.“Construction is expected to be completedby 2017,” she says. The project is estimated to cost R53,6 mil-

lion and is being undertaken by contractorGranbuild.“The new school will replace old inappro-

priate structures.“The learners will remain in the current

building while construction is underway. The construction site has been cordoned offto ensure that the school is not disrupted,”Merton says.Du Plooy says: “This school has over the

years produced brilliant people, doctors, lawyers, dentists, artisans, plumbers andeven electricians.“This school has a very beautiful and

wonderful history.”

Flooded roads, sidewalks and homes inthe Vrygrond informal settlementmight be a thing of the past come win-

ter 2016.This, at least, is the opinion of City offi-

cials regarding this impoverished area. The Vrygrond informal settlement in

Kalkfontein, Kuils River, which runs alongthe R300 highway, floods nearly each year.Several homes often endup flooded by rain-water due to it being a low-lying settlement.Plans to address this in March 2016 is how-ever underway, the City of Cape Town said.Benedicta van Minnen, mayco member

for human settlements, said recently theprovision of civil engineering services forthis site such as water, sanitation, storm-water and roads infrastructure will ensurethat floods will be a thing of the past. Thisprocess will be facilitated by the City’s ur-banisation department.“In 2013 the urbanisation department

embarked on an upgrading of informal set-tlements programme (UISP) for the inform-al settlement which incorporated a partici-pative planning processwith the communi-ty and relevant stakeholders.“The UISP is intended to create serviced

sites which include basic services such aswater, sanitation and electricity connec-tions, refuse removal and further incorpo-rating quality-of-life features such as thedevelopment of play areas and early child-hood development centres,” van Minnensaid. She added the proposed infrastructure

would drastically mitigate the occurrenceof extreme flooding.“We are currently in the detailed design

phase of this UISP project and plan to startconstruction inMarch 2016. However, untilconstruction starts, the City will continueto monitor the site and to provide reliefwhere flooding occurs.” Paul Malakoane, chair of the South African National CivicOrganisation Kuils River (Sanco), said theproposed improvement is something thatwill be welcomed by everyone.“We appreciate the fact that something

will be done. The flooding here is not some-thing new,” Malakoane said.“We have been complaining for several

years now. Some people have developedchest problems as a result which is a bigconcern for us,” he added.Johannes Pula, chairman of the Kalkfon-

tein Community Development Forum, saidthey too feel good about the plans.“This will also help create some work in

the area; we support it 100%,” he said.Van Minnen added:“We are doing everything in our power

to improve the living conditions of our resi-dents in informal settlements and we urgethe community to continue to workwith usso that we can make progress possible.”TheCity recently completed floodmitiga-

tion measures in the Los Angeles informalsettlement near Driftsands which have al-ready improved the living conditions ofresidents. The occurrence of extreme flooding on

heavy rain days has already been reduced, the City said.

Reliefdue forVrygrond

The City of Cape Town recently completedthe construction of raised gravel platforms inthe Los Angeles informal settlement, whichwill help prevent flooding during wintermonths.

being fired at their bakkie.“Two of the bullets hit the one victim in

Pat bly nou in ’n andervertrek in Ruiters se agterplaas.

Make way for theBig Band beats!Big band enthusiasts are in for a treat whenthe 10th Brass Band Extravaganza comes toArtscape Theatre on Saturday 22 August.

Formally known as Kader Miller’s BrassBand Pops, the annual big band festival hasbecome a collaboration between ArtscapeTheatre and well-known band leader andjazz musician, Ian Smith.

The purpose of the concert has alwaysbeen to provide a platform for emergingyoung bands.

Continuingwith this, the showcase has al-so, under Smith’s baton, had a make-over.

Asdirector, Smithhas takenamore select-ive approach to the production, togetherwithpromotingmore interactionand collab-oration between bands.

TheBrassBandExtravaganza is an oppor-tunity to bring together bands that wouldn’tnecessarily be seen on the same stage else-where.

This year sees Wynberg Girls’ High JazzBand and Steenberg High School’s wind andjazzbandsperformingalongside communityproject bands like the Wellington Big Bandand the world-renowned Delft Big Band.

They will be joined by Brass Band Theoryand the Santam District Big Band who haveboth evolved from minstrel groups.

Although these groups all come from verydifferent backgrounds, they share the com-monality of having all worked with Smithin some capacity, from training anddevelop-ment to mentorship.

The six orchestras have participated inworkshops with Smith throughout the year, with a focus on promoting musical literacy.

Their concert on Saturday 22 August willfeature a diverse mix of instrumental, vocaljazz, popular light classical music with anAndrew Lloyd Webber medley, some Mich-ael Bublé and Ella Fitzgerald favourites, aStevie Wonder selection, a medley of Abbahits and Johann Strauss’ Radetzky Marchamong the items on the program.

The production will end off with a bangwhen the bands’ more than 150 musiciansjoin forces for an extravagant grand finale.V Tickets for the Brass Band Extravaganza, on stageat Artscape Theatre from 15:00 on Saturday 22 August cost R40 and are available from Computicketor Artscape DialaSeat on 021 421 7695.

A clever new asthma inhaler will belaunched in South Africa by a Bellville-based company later this year.

The innovativenewbreath-actuated in-haler, the Synchrobreathe, will belaunched internationally by Cipla duringthe last quarter of 2015, according to astatement.

The device holds three key benefits forthe treatment of obstructed airway dis-eases (OAD), including asthma.

CEO Paul Miller says the device works“intuitively” and is simple to use becauseit eliminates current breathing coordina-tion challenges. Thismeans the trigger tothe Synchrobreathe’s inhaler mecha-

nismrequires only avery low inspiratoryflow (or inhalation), to activate.

Miller says this makes it “attractive toa large number of patients, whetheryoung, elderly or patients suffering fromsevere conditions”. The device alsoboasts a built-in dose counter, allowingpatients to track doses.

Miller says South Africa is rankedfourth for its asthma mortality rate by aglobal monitoring organisation. FrankPieters, the head of Cipla’s respiratory di-vision, says: “With this simple inhaler, the health care professional knows thepatient will be able to use it easily and getthe full benefit from every dose.”

Die ander Tygerbergse spanne se program(tuisspan eerste) is: Belhar t SK/Walmer, SirLowrians t UWK, Macassar t NNK, Kuilsri-vier t Hamlets, Rangers t Bellville, Hands &Heart t Franschhoek.
