The suspects were arrested on Friday at a house in Waboom Street, Rouxville in Kuils River. Inside the house blue buckets, black crates, plastic bags, pots and cartons filled with abalone were discovered. A large part of the road was cordoned off at about 15:00 by members of the Hawks dur- ing the joint operation involving several po- lice units. Police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, said: “Hawks operatives received information of an abalone drying facility at a house in Kuils River. Pounced “In response, members immediately pounced on the premises and upon search- ing it, they found wet and dry abalone to the value R3.2 million and equipment to the val- ue of R50 000 as well as R23 000 in cash.” Mulaudzi said five suspects, three Chinese and two Zimbabwean nationals, were arrest- ed. “Investigations are ongoing to determine the involvement in the illegal abalone poaching business and their status in the country,” Mulaudzi said. News of the bust and confiscation of the marine resource were also shared on the Fa- cebook pages of a local neighbourhood watch. One resident commented that the po- lice also managed to confiscate AK-47 rifles. Shock and disgust Several others from the quiet residential area expressed their shock and disgust at the illegal abalone operation. One resident mentioned she lives a mere four houses away from the house where the bust occurred. “Scary, glad they are caught,” she wrote. Another resident said the people at the house are quiet, hardly ever seen or heard. “So scary, our children ride their bicycles there every day,” one parent wrote. One person asked whether the home-own- er was aware of operations going on at the premises. “What is happening in our town?” Another resident responded saying the sus- pects owned the house and that the house was recently on the market. Winston Davids, spokesperson for the Kuils River Community Police Forum (CPF), said the CPF is happy that the police notice these criminal activities. “It is most likely part of a syndicate that has been under investigation for a while. “It is not the first time something like this occurs in Kuils River,” Davids said.

kry. Ek was geskok, want ek het nie geweetdat dieHeremynog ’n talent gegeehet nie.”In 2012 het hy aangesluit by ’n organisa-

Ek vind geluk daarin en ditfassineer my baie,” vertel hy.Hy in Januarie vanjaar aansoek gedoen

by die New York Film Academy.“Ek het my laaste oudisie ’n week gelede

Enrico moet in Januarie 2016 naAmerika vertrek.

jaar as praktiese opleiding.”

storie toe.

ander sinkstrukture langsaan beskadig.

Ek het my deur oopgemaak endie vlamme gesien.

Hy sê alles is verwoes.“Daar is niks oor van my huis nie. Alles

is afgebrand.“Ek voel bitter sleg oorwat gebeur het. Ek

Ditvoel soos ’n nagmerrie,” voeg hy by.Stephanie Fortuin, sy buurvrou, is ewe

moedeloos.

Kuils River resident and designer MariaUys’s “wearable art” was a huge hit at therecent Cape Town Design Indaba, with so-me of her work bought by international vi-sitors.

Maria, who completed her studies in sur-face design last year, was one of many localdesigners who displayed their work at theDesign Indaba.

Maria is inspired by the culture andbrightly coloured geometric designs of theNdebele people.

Despite not having a clear category forher Ndebele inspired designs, Maria saysher work is open to interpretation.

“It is wearable art. You can hang it in yo-ur house or wear it for a special occasion,”says Maria, whose label is called Afrigarde.

She said being part of the Design IndabaExpo 2015 held from 27 February until Mon-day at the CTICC, was a great experience.

Her designs, which were part of her finalyear B.Tech, were displayed to the publicfor the first time at the indaba.

“It has been great and insane. The peopleare interested in it. Some people from over-seas bought a few items. Designers fromNew York, Kenya, France and Germany,”Maria said.

She plans to travel to some of these coun-tries to observe how they use and sell it.

“This is all insane. I do not know how Iended up here,” she said when asked abouther first Design Indaba experience.

“This is good exposure. It is a great wayto network and build contacts.”

She currently works from home in KuilsRiver and delivers her orders.

“This (the Indaba) is all new. I did not ex-

pect it,” she said. She sold nearly all her stock.Apart from travelling this year to exhibit

some of her designs, she is preparing for theannual Open Design Festival at the CapeTown City Hall in August.

“I have a lot of new ideas that I want toplay with,” Maria said.

Garreth Bloor, mayco member for tou-rism, events and economic development, said in a statement issued by the City of Ca-pe Town that the benefit of the Design Inda-ba is two-fold; firstly to provide up-and-co-ming designers with exposure to the inter-national design community, and secondlyto reaffirm Cape Town’s status as the eventscapital of Africa.

“The event is an excellent launch pad foremerging design entrepreneurs,” he said.

Local designer showsoff talent at indaba

Maria Uys, a designer from Kuils River, showcased her design talent this weekend atthe annaul Design Indaba Expo 2015. Theevent was held at the CTICC.

The streets of Cape Town will come alivefrom Monday 9 to Saturday 14 March for theeighth annual Infecting the City public artsfestival.

Presented by the Africa Centre, the freefestival sees 48 unique artworks with music, visual and performance art, dance, video andundefined art forms injected into the CBD’spublic spaces.

One of this year’s highlights is Madness –a preliminary sketch, a multi-media workwith choir that explores issues of mentalhealth in today’s demanding society, compo-sed by Neo Muyanga.

Inspired by /Xam mythology and poetry,Prayer to the newmoon by New Moon Collec-tive offers an evocative night-time perfor-mance in the spectacular Castle of Good Ho-

pe while Bedlam Oz’s international streettheatre classic Slinkie Lovewill entertain au-diences with a charming story of two 6-metreslinkies falling in love.Khosi by Luthando Mthi incorporates tra-

ditional music and dance to explore ancientreligious rituals and Francois Knoetze’s ur-ban, mythological creatures composed ofgarbage and other waste materials will traip-se around the Strand Concourse Centre inCape Mongo.

The festival programme has been designedto stimulate curiosity, exploration and won-der for the City, challenging default habitsand patterns when it comes to living, wor-king and playing in the City.V Visit www.infectingthecity.com for a full programand more information about the festival.

Fighting substance abuse, strengtheningfamily ties and encouraging the youth to livemore positive lives. These are just some of the aims of a pro-

gramme presented in the gang-ridden areaof Wesbank. The Strengthening Families Programme

which focuses on teenagers from 10 to 14years of age, and their relationship withtheir parents, will start on Tuesday 7 April. The programme is aimed at enhancing fami-ly values, one role-player said.An information sessionwasheld lastweek

Tuesday at theWesbankMulti Purpose Cen-trewhere communitymemberswerebriefedabout what the seven week-long programmeentails. The programme has been successfully im-

plemented in several other areas includingBonteheuwel, Lavender Hill, Elsies River,Manenberg and Scottsdene.“This is a prevention and not an interven-

tion programme,” programme coordinatorJeremy Lewis said last week.Raelene Arendse, chairperson of the so-

cial development and early childhood devel-opment directorate, said violence in somecommunities hasmotivated the City of CapeTown to start and implement such pro-grammes.“The main thing is to get the parents and

youths in one programme.“We will specifically focus on teen sub-

stance abuse; what breaks down families inthe community; and we also want to in-crease the academic success of the youth,”Arendse explained. She said by implementing the programme

they also hope to lessen the violence in

schools and in the community.“In other communities where this has

been done, there was a significant growth inthe family system.“We want to take people from where they

are right now and with the help, input andintervention of this programme take themforward,” Arendse added.Lewis said the programme offers excur-

sions for families which helps build the rela-tionship.The programme was developed 30 years

ago by the Iowa State University in the Unit-ed States of America and has been adoptedby 26 countries across the world.“The City of Cape Town and social devel-

opment and early childhooddevelopment di-

rectorate initiated the programme in 2013with the help of theMedical Research Coun-cil,” Lewis said.Apart from social development, the City’s

directorates for sports and recreation, health, safety and security are also onboard.Lewis said they want to teach young peo-

ple how to say no to drugs, how to socialisewith their peers, encourage positive man-agement of their emotions and also encour-age them to have empathy for their parents.“Youngsters need to understand that their

parents also experience hardship. With thisprogrammewehavewitnessed a delay in ad-olescent substance abuse, it lowers aggres-sion in the youth and increases the resist-ance to peer pressure,” Lewis concluded.

and Surrounds Crime Watch, het verledeweek ’n soortgelykeberoepop inwoners ge-doen.’n Stukkende toilet is al langs ’n straat

in Rouxville gekry.

penne by onvoltooide huise steel,” sê hy.Een perdekar-ryer is al by ’n huis se

le in die gebied kom,” voeg Kruger by.

Megan White, bestuurder by die Perde-

kar-beskermingsvereniging in Epping,stem saam.“Inwonerswatmense opperdekarre sien

klagtes oor onwettige storting by haar kan-toor aangemeld.

CITY EVENT: NEW STATUS A FIRST FOR AFRICA

Marathon goes silver

At the launch of the 2015 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon were (from left) Francois Pienaar(marathon ambassador), Roxanne Hoorn (City of Cape Town), George Grieve (MD of Vital), ElanaMeyer (marathon ambassador) and Carl Roothman (CEO of Sanlam Investment Retail).PHOTO:CARINA ROUX

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon hasbeen awarded the coveted Silver Labelstatus by the International Association

of Athletics Federations (IAAF).It is the first marathon on the continent

to be awarded this classification.According to Wikipedia, Silver Label sta-

tus means that at least five nations are to berepresented by runners with times fasterthan the IAAF’s guidelines. Additionally, the race course must be closed to vehiculartraffic and measured to the Association ofInternational Marathons and Distance Ra-ces (AIMS) standard, with full electronic ti-ming used to generate the results. The racemust be organised in a way that minimisesecological damage to the surrounding areas.A specified number of doping tests must becarried out, and prize money for the partici-pants should be equal, irrespective of genderor nationality, though additional rewardscan be given to runners from the host nation.

This year the marathon will be held overthe weekend of 19 and 20 September. Entriesopened on 1 March and organisers expect 20000 entries. The marathon has R1.6 millionin total prize money.

“The bar has certainly been raised quitehigh and as we launch this year’s event, the

organisers have set yet another challenge –the IAAF’s Gold Label status for the SanlamCape Town Marathon. We are confident thatthis will also be achieved in no time,” said

Carl Roothman, Chief Executive in SanlamInvestments retail division when he spokeat a media briefing.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is one

of the first sporting events in South Africato be declared carbon neutral.

This is a significant milestone which hasalready been reached towards the achieve-ment of the Gold Label status.

Additionally, Africa’s largest vitaminsand nutritional supplements brand, VitalHealth Foods, has been appointed develop-mental partner for the Sanlam Cape TownMarathon to help assist with the develop-ment of the sport in South Africa.
