The launch of the Centre for Diversityin Counselling and Psychotherapy(CDCP) at the University of the West-

ern Cape will focus on issues related to di-versity, specifically the counselling andpsychotherapeutic interventions.According to the UWC, these interven-

tions are necessary to address the challen-ges related to the diversity within the fledg-ling democracy as it pertains to multicul-turalism, language and religion. The launch of the centre is in partnership

with the university of Toronto in Canada,Christ University in India and theUniversi-ty of Verona in Italy.

All not wellProfessor Tyrone Pretorius, rector and

vice-chancellor of UWC, said modern SouthAfrica – the ‘rainbow nation’ – is foundedon a diversity that is widely and vocally cel-ebrated.But Pretorius said all was not well with

this multi-cultural diversity.“Recent outbreaks of student protests,

charges of racism, continued talk of ine-quality and other economic woes in thecountry and anxiety about violence all sug-gest that South Africa is still struggling

with diversity in many ways,” he said.Pretorius said even his own institution

“has not gone untouched”.Speaking of the well-publicised student

protests and “racist” graffiti on the UWCcampus, “no space andno institution can es-cape the fractured nature of our society”.It is with this inmind that theUWCCDCP

was founded as a sister centre to the CDCPat the Ontario Institute for Studies in Edu-cation (OISE) at the University of Toronto, and in partnership with similar initiativesat the Christ University in India and theUniversity of Verona in Italy.Pretorius says the CDCP will draw on ex-

pertise across faculties, notably scholarsand researchers from disciplines such asclinical psychology, educational psycholo-gy and industrial psychology at UWC, andcollaborators in Canada, India and Italy. The aim will be to conduct research, de-

sign training programmes, develop inter-ventions and contribute to policies that canaddress the challenges of diversity not justin South Africa, but also on a global level.Professor Mokgadi Moletsane, deputy

dean of Research in UWC’s Faculty of Edu-cation, said the very teaching and practiceof counselling and psychotherapy in South

Africa will be interrogated, and for now thedriving force behind the centre.“Too often, she noted, practitioners are

ill-equipped to provide counselling to thosefromdifferent cultural, religious and ethnicbackgrounds.“Mental health practitioners must not

disregard the importance of diversity,” Mo-letsane said.

Tremendous challengesShe says the reality is that mental health

professionals are faced with tremendouschallenges of assessing and providing psy-chological services across a diverse andmulti-cultural nation, and existing ap-proaches “may not be up to the task”.Among other areas, the centre will look

at emerging trends and controversies relat-ed tomulti-culturalismanddiversity inpsy-chology, counselling and psychotherapy.Students will engage with communities

and organisations at different levels, espe-cially within indigenous local communi-ties.Research will look to deepen understand-

ing of multi-culturalism, plurality and di-versity to develop suitable treatments inmental health.

UWC to focus on diversity

Buttskop upgrade planned

A section of Buttskop Road in Blackheath is set to be upgraded. PHOTO: RICHARD ROBERTS

RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj

Along overdue upgrade to parts of Butt-skop Road in Blackheath is soon setto take place, it was announced at a

subcouncil 21 meeting last week. The part earmarked for the upgrade is be-

tween Range Road and Vineyard Street,Dennis de Villiers, a representative fromthe City of Cape Town’s transport depart-ment, told ward councillors. The cost of the upgrade is R100 000.The money was originally planned to be

used as a contribution to the level crossingelimination project – a project driven byPrasa to eliminate the level crossing. Ac-cording to the subcouncil agenda howeverthe planning for this project is delayed.De Villiers told councillors that the mon-

ey earmarked will therefore be used to im-prove Buttskop.“We are going to utilise the money for the

upgrade of a section of Buttskop. The sec-tion we are looking at is around 300 metreslong,” de Villiers said.

Bert van Dalen, ward 14 councillor, toldDe Villiers the section near the crossing atFrederick Street is also a safety concern.“This road should be diverted as it poses

a danger,” he said, adding that the depart-ment is aware of the danger at this section.“A diversion of Frederick Street was one

of the options considered, but the R100 000

will not be enough to build a new road.“We will also be required to cross land

that does not belong to us,” said De Villiers. It is unclear when the upgrade will start. The Buttskop level crossing made head-

lines five years ago when a Metrorail trainstruck a minibus taxi transporting schoolchildren. Ten children died in that accident.

Schäfer also handed over a second school onWednesday – the Happy Valley PrimarySchool which was completed late last year. Both schools are part of the department’s

Collaboration Schools Pilot Project.“We are pleased that we have been able

to deliver two beautiful schools that thecommunity can be proud of, and its learnerscan thrive in,” Schäfer said. The schools cater for 1 240 learners each. The pilot programme started at the begin-

ning of the year.“The education department in partner-

ship with a group of philanthropic donorslaunched the programme as part of ourbroader efforts to improve the educationaloutcomes of our public schools in poorer

communities and underperformingschools. Through the programme, the edu-cation department aims to test a newmodelof schooling that brings additional educa-tionmanagement skills and innovation intothe public school system, through non-prof-it partnerships that improve the quality ofteaching and learning in no-fee publicschools,” Schäfer said. The Mellon Educate Foundation and the

Mfuleni police are searching for an al-leged murder suspect after the bodyof a woman was discovered in a bush

near Happy Valley last week. The badly decomposed body is apparently

that of Sizeka Batala, a mother from the So-phiatown township near Happy Valley inBlackheath.

Batala went missing on Monday 15 Febru-ary. She was later reported missing at theMfuleni police station, community workerJulie de Bruin told TygerBurger last week.

De Bruin is one of those who believe thatthe body, described by her as badly bruisedand found on Monday 14 March at about20:30, is that of Batala.

“Her family and friends searched every-where for her, but could not find her,” DeBruin said.

Last week the family received a phonecall, apparently from Batala’s boyfriend, who is a Mozambican national.

“He called them to inform them where herbody was buried,” de Bruin said.

The police are now searching for the boy-friend.

Amemorial service was held last weekto honour the two McDonald’s staffmembers who sadly passed away a

week ago in what can be described as a sadcase of mistaken identity.Noxolo Skota (29) and her colleague Xoli-

sa Tshabe (24) were passengers in a ToyotaQuantum being transported home on Hind-le Road, Blue Downs last Monday morningwhen they were shot and killed – allegedlyby the police. The policemistook their vehi-cle for the one involved inanarmedrobberyearlier that day at a service station inGroveStreet, Kuils River.

Two suspects involved in the robberywere also shot dead. They were found inParliament Street, Mfuleni.

OnThursdayafternoonSkota andTshabewere remembered by their colleagues, fami-ly and friends for the loving, kindandcheer-ful individuals they were.

One of their colleagues described Skota, whostartedworkingatMcDonald’s inKuilsRiver in August 2013, as a nice person, someone who always made jokes and whoworked well with all of her managers.

“We lost a friend, a colleague and a familymember,” the colleague said.

Tshabe was described as a gentleman.“They will always be remembered,” an-

other worker said.Thememorial, which was held at the Van

Riebeeck Hall, was packed with colleagues, family, friends and residents of Kuils River.

Eddie Cornelissen, former owner of thefast food franchise in Van Riebeeck Road, also spoke a few words. He thanked every-one for attending the memorial and forshowing their support and described theday as a sad occasion.

Nico Jacobs, a director atMcDonald’s SA,also comforted the family.“Myheart goes out to the family of the two

victims and their friends and colleagues –my deepest sympathy.“We are never going to realise the poten-

McDonald’s SA, said ina statement the com-pany was working closely with the familiesof thedeceasedand injuredduring this diffi-cult time.“We respect the privacy of the victims

and their families and we do not wish to en-ter into details of our support to the fami-lies. We are still dealing with the tragedyof such a senseless loss and ask your pa-tience as we deal with our grief and worktowards recovering.”A memorial service was also held on

Z3, is egter Donderdag verlate in Observato-ry gevind, vertel Brendan.

“Sy was op pad na haar kêrel om die voer-tuig by hom af te laai. Iewers langs die padmoes iets verkeerd geloop het,” sê hy.Die voertuig staan tans by ’n vriend se

huis.

’n kringtelevisiekamera.

Wide reaching, lightning-fast internet accesscould soon be available

in Cape Town, pending councilapproval, for the installation ofa fibre-optic cable network inthe city’s sewer and stormwaterpipes. The City of Cape Town’s may-

oral committee last Tuesdayrecommended that councilgrants approval for LinkAfrica,a telecommunication compa-ny’s “right of use” application.Mayco member for corporate

services and compliance, Xan-thea Limberg, says if approvedthis roll-out will have far reach-ing benefits, not only for theCity, but more importantly forresidents and businesses.“The granting of the long-

term rights will contribute tothe accelerated roll-out of tele-communications infrastructurethat is essential for economicdevelopment in Cape Town,”she said.Link Africa will decide where

to install the fibre-optic cablebased on the demand in specificareas for the services whichthey offer, she says.“The entire city could ulti-

mately benefit, but rates andtaxes will not be affected.“The draft agreement be-

tween the City and the serviceprovider makes provision for acharge to be raised by the Citywhen granting the right to in-stall cables in the City’s pipes. This will be a very small addi-tional source of income to the

City andwill be paid by the com-pany,” she says.“Once the network has been

established, the company thenleases capacity on the networkto internet service providers(ISPs) who in turn provide in-ternet services to end users.End users would pay their ISPfor the internet service they re-ceive. The ISP will in turn paythe telecommunication net-work provider for the use oftheir network that will enablethem to recover the cost ofbuilding and operating the net-work,” she explains. The draft agreement broker-

ed between the two parties pro-tects the City’s rights as theowner of the infrastructure. The granting of these long-

term rights up to 15 years willbe in accordance to certain con-ditions, which will ensure thatmunicipal services are protect-ed at all times and that no build-ings or permanent structuresmay be constructed over themunicipal services. In addition, any alterations to municipalservices will be carried out atLink Africa’s own cost and theinfrastructure is to be madeavailable, on an open access ba-sis, to all electronic communica-tion service licence holders.“A concern was raised about

a possible increase in blockagesin these municipal pipes,” saysLimberg. However, an investi-gation by the City’s engineeringdepartment and an independentconsulting engineer concludedthat the risk was within a toler-ance level thatwasacceptable tothe City.

SENIOR AFRICA CHAMPIONSHIP: BRONZE FOR 22-YEAR-OLD

Norma Gordon with her bronze medal after theSenior Africa Wrestling Championship.

Atalented young female wrestler fromthe Olympians Sport Academy (OSA)in Durbanville, Norma Gordon, fin-

ished in third place at the Senior AfricaWrestling Championship earlier this monthin Egypt. The 22-year-old competed in theu.55kg women’s category.

“My greatest challenge is working fullday, and then still putting in the maximumamount of training before and after work,”she says. “My training routine consists ofgoing for a run before work, and then doingphysical training on the mat after work –Mondays to Thursdays. On Fridays andweekends I go for a run twice a day. I don’tmind as I’m motivated to bring home a med-al,” says Gordon.

Gordon, who is from Klipheuwel, was thefirst junior woman to win a medal at the Af-

rica Championship. She is currently a full-time employee at an accounting firm whereshe works as a bookkeeper and is studyingpart time towards a diploma in bookkeeping.

“I’m proud to have won a medal, but Iwould’ve liked it to be gold. My highlightwas to have made my weight. This is usuallya challenge for most wrestlers,” she says.

Gordon has set great goals for 2016.“I’d like to complete my first semester of

my studies successfully and win a gold med-al at the Senior South African Champion-ship later this year. I’m also currently train-ing to qualify for the Olympics.”

Says Wendy Bosse, secretary of the Olym-pians Sport Academy: “Olympians SportAcademy (OSA) aims to reach the youth andteach them that one can follow a differentlifestyle, have dreams and accomplish them.

Durbell Pharmacy started sponsoring us in2007 and is one of our main sponsors. Theircontribution has helped us grow the acade-my and impact a huge amount of lives. It hashelped us to send wrestlers to provincial, na-tional and international tournaments. Are-as such as Philadelphia, Morningstar, Dur-banville Children’s Home and communitiessurrounding Durbanville have benefitedfrom the sponsorship.

“Norma made a decision while she wasstill in school to change her circumstancesand rise above it. She is motivated and hasmade a huge success in not only her sportingcareer, but in her personal life as well. Sheis a true role-model for other youth by show-ing that if you make the right choices, youcan become something. We’re all very proudof her,” concludes Bosse.
