TropMed International Student Guide
Our FTM has welcome foreign students since 1967, when the graduate
Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) program went
international. At present, we have 9 regular international postgraduate programs,
all taught in English, ranging from graduate diploma to doctoral degree. Those
courses equip doctors, researchers, scientists, and health personnel who are
involved in tropical medicine and public health, with the skills they need to
further their careers, and to make positive impact on healthcare problems in the
tropics and elsewhere. Our graduates pursue successful careers in public and
private sector healthcare services both in consultation and in research institutions
nationally and internationally.
We know that, initially, life can be challenging for foreign students in
Thailand due to many factors. You may feel a little disorientated because of the
new surroundings, different culture, language, and traditions. You have to cope
with day-to-day activities of normal life and you have to study hard to succeed in
your chosen program. This is quite a complex task for anyone. However, from
past experience, we can tell you that the survival and success rates of our students
have been almost 100%. Therefore, we feel totally confident you can rise to this
challenge.
We sincerely hope that this International Student Guide will help you to
settle quickly, feel more comfortable in your temporary home at TropMed, and
will help you to relax and enjoy the many exciting experiences awaiting you.
Always remember that you are not alone – our staff members are here to support
you; they really want to see you succeed in your studies and have an enjoyable
time doing so. You will also form networks of close friends and colleagues
among your groups that will endure throughout your careers, wherever you are.
I am delighted that you have chosen to study with us, and wish you every
success – with your studies, your extracurricular activities, and your future
careers.
Welcome to TropMed

Do and Don’t
Do “Wai”: It is a very nice greeting
posture to show your respect to the
person especially elder or superior
person ex. parents, lecturers etc. Wai
is also used to say thank you and
goodbye. To do wai, press your palms
together at chest or chin level as if
you are praying, then bow your head
to your hands and bow your upper
body slightly.
Do “dress up properly”: When you
come to your class; our school office; to
enter temples; to contact lecturers;
government officers etc., don’t come up
with singlet; sleeveless shirt; short
clothes; hot pants; slippers etc. In Thai
cultures, these mean showing no respect
to that person or place.
Do “bring our emergency card with
you”: When you’re going out.
Do “take a good care of your
pocket or valuable things”: When
you are in the crowded areas.
TropMed International Student Guide 2017 Page | 15
Don’t “touch or play on head of the elder or
superior person” : Head is considered the
most sacred part of the body, a younger or
inferior person should not touch or play on
head of the elder or superior person. A sincere
apology should be offered immediately, if you
touch the person’s head unintentionally.
Don’t “point your leg to people or person”: Feet
are considered to be the lowest part of the body,
pointing with the feet is rude. So, don’t use your
feet to point things out or to touch any part of the
body of anyone which is considered very rude,
particularly not towards Buddha images.
* Avoid placing your foot on the table while
sitting.
* Sometime pointing with the finger is also
considered rude.
Don’t “climb onto any Buddha image or do
anything which might indicate a lack of respect:
Each Buddha image is regarded as a sacred
object. Sacrilegious Acts are punishable by
imprisonment even if committed by foreign visitors.
Ladies/Women must not touch a Buddhist monk.
Don’t “walk alone in the dark or strange places”,
especially lady.

Medical and Dental Services
Medical services: Hospital for Tropical Diseases in the Faculty
of Tropical Medicine serves both OPD and IPD. Although it is
specialized in Tropical Medicine, most of the diseases can be treated
here. However, there is no Surgery/Trauma or OB/GYN in the
Hospital. In addition, our hospital operates Travel Medicine Clinic,
Chinese Traditional Medicine Unit and Traditional Thai Massage Unit.
If our students have more serious problems that cannot be treated
here, we can transfer them to Ramathibodi Hospital which is a modern
medical center with all fields of sub-specialities and modern
technologies. Ramathibodi Hospital is under Mahidol University and
just near our campus.
Notes : All students in Mahidol University have health insurance.
TropMed International Student Guide 2017 Page | 27
Dental Services: The Dental clinic at the Faculty of Dentistry,
adjacent to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine is available. All students
need to check-up first for a record, so that the payment for upcoming
dental care can be reimbursed. Our school staff will arrange the check-
up.

Climate
Summer: from March to May, it brings hot and dry weather
throughout Thailand with temperatures ranging from 28-
35°C. It is very hot some days, direct exposure to sun light
may cause sun-burn, dehydration, heat-stroke etc. Light,
loose cotton clothing is more suitable for this hot season.
Rainy: from June to September with temperatures ranging from
24-30°C. Whenever it rains, the traffic in Bangkok will be
crowded. A journey, may take much more time than usual.
Think about it!!!
Cool: from November to February with temperatures ranging
from 24-27°C. In some places the temperature may drop
below 10°C for example mountainous areas in the North or
Northeast of Thailand. Jacket, sweater or thick clothes may
be needed in those places.

Taxi
Taxis are cheap and air conditioned. They are required to use their
meter but some drivers will attempt to negotiate a rate. All taxis have
a TAXI-METER sign on the roof, yellow license plates. Taxis are
available 24 hours, price is on meter which will start from 35 baht for
the first 2 km. Meter will not stop during traffic jam!!!
You can use the application from smartphone to come and pick you
up at your place with extra pay about 20-30 baht.
Note:
● Registration number of the taxi should be noted in case of any
problem
● Expressway tolls are paid by passengers.
● Be sure the driver resets the meter before the journey.
Public vans
● Around Victory Monument, city vans
service to outbound of Bangkok. This way is
faster than bus but you have to wait long line
during rush hour. Fare ranges from 20- to 50
baht depending on distance.
TropMed International Student Guide 2017 Page | 37
Tuk-Tuk (Sam-lor):
These three wheeled taxis are a symbol of
Thailand, named by the sound they make,
these are a distinctively, properly called a
“sam-lor” are generally the quickest way
to get somewhere around the city but they
are rather dangerous. If you take a long
trip in them, you will be quite dirty at the
end. Be sure to negotiate the fare before
starting your trip. Bargaining is needed to
make an agreement on the fare.
Motorcycle taxis:
They can be found many street corners.
This helpful for beating the traffic in an
unavoidable rush hour cross-town
journey but it is risky. Prices normally
start from 10 baht. If you will take
longer distance, the fare is on
bargaining and agreement. Just walk
up to the driver, tell him where you
want to go. The driver is supposed to
supply you with a safety helmet and
you are supposed to wear it.
Taxi Boat
TropMed International Student Guide 2017 Page | 38
There are many types of taxi boats for travelling along Chao Phraya
River and many canals (Klong). For example: Chao Phraya Ferry boat,
Express boat, Long-tail boat etc. Fare is vary from 3-30 baht depending
on the type of boat and distance.
BTS sky train
BTS is an efficient and convenient way to
navigate around the inner city, at a cost low
enough to relax and enjoy the ride. It is an
elevated train that runs through the main
business districts. Train stations are well
marked and well tended. Fare start from 15-
70 baht per journey depending on the
distance. BTS operates from 6 am to
midnight everyday. The station that stops
near FTM is “Victory Monument” station.
Maps are available at station. BTS can be
connected to MRT subway at some stations.
Rabbit card is the e-money service
with a common ticketing platform
between BTS and any participating
mass transit systems while extending
its usage into retail, service and

Tropical Medicine; Faculty of Public Health and Faculty of
Dentistry. Many hawker foods are around the three faculties and food
stalls are beside our faculty at side-gate (Senarak Road). Within
walking distance outside campus, you can find canteens in other
institutes. There are many hawker foods, food stalls, food shops and
restaurants around the Victory Monument area.
Bangkok is an eating paradise; you can find all kinds of foods and
restaurants, from a small food stall or hawker food along the road side
to the large restaurants or food court in department store. You can find
