BTM ModuleProvides up to 4 channels ofanalog position and/or velocityfeedback!

The waveguide consists of a specialnickel-iron alloy with 0.7 mm O.D.and 0.5 mm I.D.

A copper conductor is introducedthrough the length of this tube. Thestart of measurement is initiated by ashort current pulse. This currentgenerates a circular magnetic fieldwhich rotates around thewaveguide.

A permanent magnet at the point ofmeasurement is used as the markerelement, whose lines of field run atright angles to the electromagneticfield.

In the area on the waveguide wherethe two fields intersect, a magneto-

strictive effect causes an elastic deformationof the waveguide, which propagates alongthe waveguide in both directions in the formof a mechanical wave.

The mechanical wave is converted toan electrical signal by the signalconverter. The propagation time of themechanical wave is determined by theposition of the permanent magnetand can be determinedto resolutions down to 1 µm.

The quadrature output interfaces directly to standard encoder inputs (90°out of phase, A & B). This configuration gives you more interface optionsfor connecting to motion based systems. In addition, the Micropulsequadrature output transducer has the ability to provide absolute positioninformation through use of its innovative BURST function.

New Rapid Replacement Module Option

Balluffs new Rapid Replacement Module (RRM) option allows quick fieldreplacement without removing the pressure tube from the cylinder, makingchange-outs easy and cutting equipment downtime.Advantages of the RRM include:

No hydraulic oil spillage and no need for environmentalcontainment

No danger from hot oil spilling onto repair personnel No need to bleed air from hydraulic system after replacement No danger of dirt entering open hydraulic port 100% exchange of sensor package eliminates guesswork Dimensionally identical to standard Balluff Z style for equivalent

output type Backward-compatible with existing standard Balluff Z style

pressure tubes* Available for all output types except Profibus, CANopen, and

ProSet4

The RRM can be installed in your maintenance program in a variety of ways:

For new installations, you can order optional ZMconstruction, which includes a Balluff pressure tubealong with a RRM pre-installed. To change out thistype, you simply remove two housing screws, replacethe RRM, re-tighten the two housing screws andyoure done.

For new installations, you can also order standard Zconstruction, which includes a complete standardtransducer. You can still do field swaps on this type byremoving the standard electronics head and internalwaveguide element as two separate components, thenreplacing both with a single RRM unit.

If you already have an installed base of standard BalluffZ transducers, you can also change them out quicklywith the RRM as described above. The RRM easilyretrofits into existing Balluff pressure tubes once the oldelectronics and waveguide element have been re-moved.*

Autotuning Circuitry

Patented Autotuning circitry in Balluff Micropulse® transducersautomatically compensates for changes in the strength of themagnetostrictive return signal.

• Allows Micropulse rod-style transducers to be used in hydraulic cylinders that have either a Balluff magnet ring OR a competitor’s magnet ring. Autotuning makes retrofitting to existing hydraulic cylinders trouble-free, with no need to change out the competitor’s magnets.

• Automatically compensates for changes in temperature, providing a more stable signal over a wide temperature range.

Installing in Locations Classified as Zone 0 Under CENELEC Guidelines

Only the rod section of the transducer may extend into Zone 0. To ensuresafe isolation between Zone 0 and Zone 1, the relevant safety regulations forpotentially explosive atmospheres must be strictly adhered to.When using a float magnet, it is necessary that a static discharge betweenthe transducer rod and the inner portion of the float be prevented. The floatson page 53 are designed so that, in normal operation, the float is tilted, thereby ensuring mechanical contact between the transducer rod and thefloat wall. Do not use other types of floats or attempt to disable this designfeature.

Note: The transducer is not approved for locations classified as Zone 0under Factory Mutual/CSA guidelines.

Balluff magnets areavailable in captive orfloating styles. All BTL5magnets shown here canbe used on any BalluffMicropulse transducer.

The BTL5-P-3800-2magnet can be used with avertical offset from theupper surface of thetransducer body of0...4mm, and theBTL5-P-5500-2 permits adistance of 5...15mm. TheBTL5-P-4500-1 is anelectromagnet and requiresa supply voltage of 24V,which can be turned on andoff for selective activation. This allows multiplexoperation with multiplemagnets on a singletransducer, since only onemagnet is active at a time.

R Low-Profile Style

The low-profile R housing is designed to be mechanicallycompatible with legacy linear potentiometers. The centerline atthe control rod is the same vertical location as the rod on manypopular pots. However the R style provides long-life, non-contact magnetostrictive technology that will outlast any wear-prone linear potentiometer.

Autotuning Circuitry

Patented Autotuning circuitry in Balluff Micropulse® transducersautomatically compensates for changes in the strength of themagnetostrictive return signal.

Automatically compensates for changes in temperature, providing a more stable signal over a wide temperature range. For Micropulse profile-style transducers using a floating magnet configuration, Autotuning ensures that the return signal remains stable, even if the distance from magnet to transducer varies.

Micropulse AT

Accurate Linear Position Measurement

The Micropulse® AT is a superioralternative to traditional low-costlinear feedback devices such as linearpotentiometers (pots). Balluffdesigned the Micropulse AT in amodular fashion to simplifymanufacturing and reduce componentcosts to be competitive with thesedevices.

Wear-Free

Inexpensive

Easy to Order

Easy to Hook Up

The main advantage of theMicropulse® AT is the non-contact,wear-free magnetostrictive sensingprinciple. Linear potentiometers, bycontrast, are electro-mechanicaldevices that utilize a moving wipercontact riding along a resistiveelement. Both the wiper contact andthe resistive element are subject towear from repeated operation andcontinuous machine vibration.Abrasive contaminants are able toenter the potentiometer housingthrough the mechanical seals, furtheraccelerating wear - leading to erraticposition signals.

With no moving parts, the MicropulseAT is impervious to environmentalcontamination such as dust and grit.It is also shock and vibration rated foruse in demanding industrialapplications. The convenient M12connector assures easy installationand quick replacement without theneed to remove and reinstallhardwired cabling.

The round housing of the MicropulseAT allows the unit to be rotated tosense the position magnet in multipledirections, enhancing installationflexibility. The position magnet is a

Digital pulse interface P11_Profile series A1

P110-Interface

Compatible with various OEMcontrols, e.g., Siemens, Schlei-cher, B & R, Bosch, Mitsubishi,Schiele, Parker, Esitron, WAGOetc.

Reliable signal transmission, even over cable lengths up to500 m between BTL andcontroller, is assured by theespecially noise-immuneRS422 differential drivers andreceivers. Noise signals areeffectively suppressed.

P110 Rising/Falling in a SingleInterface

Based on differing philosophies, two controller-specific interfaceshave been established fo thedigital pulse versions. The difference lies in how theedges are processed. In the "P" interface the fallingedges and in the "M" interface therising edges are processed. To reduce the amount of partnumbers, the "P110 interface"has been developed whichcombines both functions. The reference point for thepropagation time measurement isthe "Start" pulse.

Benefits

High resolution Position data from 2 magnets can be processed simultaneously 4/8-bit processor interface

P111 InterfaceCost savings using DPI/IPfor start-up and installation

DPI/IP is a protocol for directdata interchange between acontroller and transducer. Thesignal lines are used to sendadditional information such asmanufacturer, stroke lengthand waveguide gradient. Thisallows start-up or replacementof a transducer without havingto make manual changes in thecontroller parameters. With the P110 start/stopdigital output, both the risingand the falling edges of thesignal are precisely controlled, allowing the flexibility to matchthe controller interfacerequirements with a single partnumber.

Features

Micropulse transducers have longbeen standard in the plasticsmachinery industry on high-precisionmachines and offered on standardmachines as a non-contact option topotentiometric systems.

The Micropulse AT and AT Vantagehave been designed in cooperationwith development engineers from theplastics machinery industry. The ATfamily is competitively priced andmeets all the technical demands ofthe industry.

With the introduction of MicropulseAT transducers, downtimes can bereduced to a minimum not just onhigh-end specialty machines, but onstandard production models as well.

Introduction

Advanced, multi-function tracking capability in one transducer

Track two motions with one system

The AT Vantage senses two motions at the same time Two magnets provide two user programmable analog outputs for stroke length and rising 0-10V or falling 10-0V signals set your zero and span points anywhere between Significant cost reduction with one transducer taking the place of two

Higher performance, longer life, lower cost

With no moving parts, the Micropulse ATs non-contact magnetostrictive sensing technology is far superior to wear prone electro-mechanical contact designs such as potentiometers Impervious to dust, grit, shock, and vibration and rated for use in a wide variety of industrial applications

Micropulse AT and AT Vantage ideal for use in injection molding machines

Senses two motions at the same time!

100% Field - Scalable

The Balluff Micropulse AT Vantage starts with all theadvantages of the Micropulse AT, and adds two-magnetoperation to detect two independent machine motions orspeeds at the same time in the same installation. Theadded ability to track single stroke/dual motion machinefunctions (such as clamp/eject on a plastic injectionmolding machine) allows a single transducer to performthe same function as two separate transducers.

100% adjustable analog signal LED indicator for programming assistance Separate teach-in for all zero and span points Selectable dual position or single position plus differential measurement modes.

Teach-in

Used for changing the factory set nulland end point with a new null and endpoint. First the magnet must bebrought to the new null point and thento the new end position, and therespective values stored by pressingthe button.

Using the AT Vantage

Two moving members on amachine often travel in the samedirection. Each axis normallyrequires a separate feedbacksensor.

With the Micropulse AT you cannow sense both movements at thesame time with just one transducerhaving 2 analog outputs.

The position of the respective nulland end points can be setindividually using 2 programmableinputs.

The two ranges may be adjacent, may overlap, and can beprogrammed for a rising or falling

Modes

output signal. The transducer canbe operated using one or twomagnets.

If one magnet leaves theprogrammed range or if only oneis present, the position is indicatedon Output 1. Output 2 thenindicates an error value.

Analog Interface ModuleThe versatile BTM module converts aSTART/STOP digital pulse signal from aMicropulse transducer into user-scalable analog position and/or velocityinformation. In addition, the BTMmodule can be used to provide aposition signal from up to 4 magnets ona single Micropulse transducer. Sincethe conversion from digital signal intoanalog signal takes place in the closeproximity to the analog input device, ahigh degree of signal noise immunitycan be achieved.

Digital Interface ModuleThe BTM-H1 module converts aSTART/STOP digital pulse signal from aMicropulse transducer into paralleldigital outputs (up to 23-bits,depending on transducer length). Theoutput data format is user-selectablebinary, BCD, or Gray code. The BTM-Hmodule also provides a 24-bitSynchronous Serial Interface (SSI)signal. User-selectable resolutions, anda super-fast update rate make theBTM-H1a high-performance interfacesolution.

Digital DisplaysRanging from simple, low cost displaysto allow visual position monitoring up tofull-featured displays withprogrammable setpoints and serialcommunication capabilities, Balluffoffers a display product to meet anyapplication requirement.

T

Non-LinearityThe degree to which theoutput value from theMicropulse transducersystem is not perfectlyproportional to traveldistance. Standard trans-ducers show anon-linearity of max. ±0.02%full scale. Example: a 24-inch stroke BTL5 with analogoutput may output aposition value which is0.0048" greater or less thanthe true, absolute position. This value is repeatable, however, to within 0.0002"(see resolution andrepeatability). For higheraccuracy requirements,Micropulse transducers withSynchronous Serial Interface(SSI) can be used.

HysteresisThe difference in indicatedposition when the samepoint is reached from twodifferent directions.Repeatability refers to travelfrom one direction only, hysteresis from twodirections.

RepeatabilityThe degree to which theindicated position point B asrepresented by the outputvalue is reproduced whenmoving in one direction frompoint A and back to point B.In the case of a BTL5system, position repeataccuracy is always the sameas the stated resolution +hysteresis.

ResolutionThe smallest increment ofposition change that can bedetected by the transducer. The resolution of Micropulsetransducers depends on theoutput type chosen.

Digitally-Derived Analog(Z housing, rod-styleonly)Output resolution isexpressed as 16-bits. Thedigital position information isconverted into an analogsignal internally through adigital-to-analog converter.

True Analog (all otherhousing styles)The analog output is derivedwithout using a digital-to-analog converter. Resolutionfor this type of system isvirtually infinite. Attainableresolution is determinedprimarily by electrical noiseinherent to the application, and input resolution of thecontrol system.

Digital Pulse Output(all housings)For digital pulse-outputsystems (i.e. Start/Stop orPWM) resolution is deter-mined by the clockfrequency of the customerinterface which measures thetime interval between theStart pulse and the Stoppulse (or the rising and fallingedges of the PWM signal).Resolution can be deter-mined as follows:

Resolution (in inches) =1 ÷ (Gradient x ClockFrequency)

The gradient value is printedon the label of each trans-ducer and is expressed inmicroseconds per inch(µsec/inch).

The Clock Frequency is thefrequency of the counter inthe customer suppliedinterface and is usuallyexpressed in megahertz(MHz).

Example - assuming agradient value of 9.000 µs/inch and a clock frequency of56 MHz

Resolution (in inches)= 1 ÷ (9 x 56)= 1 ÷ 504= 0.00198

Digital Serial Systems(SSI, Canbus, etc.)Resolution is a definedvalue, stated in inches.

TemperatureCoefficientExpressed as ppm/°C or °F,TC is the degree to whichthe output signal (andtherefore the indicatedposition) is affected byambient temperaturechanges.

Dead ZoneThe end of the Micropulsetransducer rod, from end ofstroke to the end of therod. This is usually the last2.3 inches of the rod. If themagnet enters the deadzone the output will beunpredictable.

Null SpaceThe distance from the headof the transducer to thestart of the electrical stroke.

Null PositionThe position of the magneton the transducer rodwhich reads a zero orminimum output.

StrokeThe active electrical portionor the sensing portion ofthe Micropulse transducer.

AnalogThe output of the trans-ducer is an analog voltage(0 to 10 Vdc,-10 to +10 Vdc, or -5 to 5Vdc) or an analog current (0to 20 mA, 4-20 mA) and isproportional to the positionof the magnet.

Digital Pulse OutputThe output of thetransducer is a digital Start/Stop pulse or a PulseWidth Modulated (PWM)signal. Magnet position isdirectly proportional to thetime interval between theStart pulse and the Stoppulse (or the rising andfalling edges of the PWMsignal). An external counteris required to measure thistime interval. A wide varietyof processor cards, PLCplug-in cards, and stand-alone controllers designedaround this interface areavailable.

Digital Serial OutputThe output of thetransducer is in the form ofa serial data word or stringin SSI (binary or Gray code)or CANbus format.

Analog voltage output

The output voltage isdirectly proportional to theposition of the magnet alongthe waveguide. The most importantparameter for analogoutputs is the refresh rateand the ripple of the outputsignal. Many transducers onthe market attain thespecified values for outputripple only by means oflow-pass filtering. Thisalways carries with it anundesirable time delay of theoutput signal.Micropulse transducersattain the specified signalquality without extensivelow-pass filters, insteadusing improved circuitdesign. This means fastupdate times with low levelsof ripple and noise on theoutput signal. Micropulsetransducers with voltageoutput have 2 outputs, oneincreasing and onedecreasing.Available versions include:0...10 V (10...0 V)10...10 V (10...10 V) and-5...5V (5V...-5V)

Analog current output

The output signal is directlyproportional to the magnetposition along thewaveguide. Analog currentinterfaces of 0...20 mA and4...20 mA are standard innumerous applications andin many industries. Currentinterfaces are significantlyless sensitive to inducednoise than are analogvoltage interfaces. A 500Ohm resistor can be used toeasily convert the 0..20 mAsignal into a voltage of0...10 V. The 4...20 mAsignal provides a simpleform of cable breakmonitoring, since even at thenullpoint of the stroke acurrent of 4 mA must flow.Micropulse transducers withcurrent output are availablewith increasing ordecreasing signals.

Pulse interface

The time between aninterrogation and the replysignal is directly proportionalto the position of themagnet along thewaveguide. These pulsesare transmitted usingRS485/422 differential linedrivers, guaranteeing noise-free signal transmission overdistances of up to 500m(1640ft.). The greatadvantage of these inter-faces is the noise-immunesignal transmission with asimple and economicalinterface. Interfaces withtristate outputs allowmultiplexing of severalMicropulse transducers.Appropriate control cardsare available.

SSI synchronous serialinterface

The position of the magnetalong the waveguide is sentto the control serially in theform of a data word.Micropulse transducers withSSI interface can beconnected directly tocontrols or closed-loopcontrol cards with SSIinterfaces designed forabsolute encoders. The datatransmission from thesensor to the control issynchronized by means of aclock pulse from the control.Depending on the requiredresolution, transducers with 24 or 25-bit data words are available. The maximum non-linearityof the SSI Micropulsetransducer of±30µm over the entirestroke, the updatefrequency of 2kHz and aresolution of 5µm make theSSI Micropulse transducersan ideal feedback sensor, even in the mostdemanding applications.

CANopen

The position of the magnetalong the waveguide is sentover the CAN-Bus to thecontrol in so-called PPPPProcessDDDDData OOOOObjects, PDOs.Micropulse transducerswork with standardCANopen protocols per CiADS 301 and with thestandard device profile perDS 406. CANopen offersgreater flexibility because ofthe large number ofconfiguration options for thetransducer. For example, theresolution is programmablefor 5, 10, 20 or 100 µm,depending on your applica-tion. Or you can selectwhether only position oralso velocity informationshall be sent to your control;cyclically, or on-demand.And there's more: Up to 4so-called software camscan be defined in the activestroke range. Each time thestatus of one of these camschanges, high-priorityEmergencymessages are sent to thecontrol (check factory foravailability).
