INSIDE ADULT EDUCATION

On Wednesday, November 6th, Adult Ed students and teachers began preparing for two very special events. No, it wasn’t Thanksgiving or Christmas. It was for the TOY DRIVE and the CANNED FOOD DRIVE. Both of these Campus efforts run from November 5th through December 12th. On this preparation day, S.P.A.C.E. Club members met to put together the boxes which will soon overflow with toys and canned goods to be distributed to our less fortunate community neighbors. You can help by bringing any new toys and cans of food to your classroom and filling those boxes. Students and teachers will also be participating in PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT on November 26th.

This is a super opportunity to help our community’s homeless. To volunteer, see Mr. Babs’ Diyan or Mrs. Felicia Taylor in room 16.

S.P.A.C.E. CLUB ACTION

At the Wednesday, October 30th meeting of the S.P.A.C.E. Club, members reflected on the Club’s purpose

to “protect the earth by slowing down global warming with community development, education and per-

sonal commitment”. December is a busy month as members will be involved in the “Toys for Tots” Drive,

as well as a “Canned Food” Drive. The “Toys for Tots” collection bin is located in Room 16. There are also

boxes in every classroom just waiting to be filled. Bring some cans of food. Bring a toy.

Make a child smile.

My father was a superhero for 48 years. He was a man who had all the traits of a hero. We use to

live in a dangerous ghetto, but he had the determi-nation to create a baseball team no matter the challenging obstacles. See, he thought sports kept

children away from drugs and crime. He was al-ways passionate about baseball. He played base-ball most of his youth.

He was an example to follow so the other fathers

gathered to make a dream come true. They worked together, almost with no resources; they were honest with everyone around them. My fa-

ther had a lot of baseball skills, so he knew what he was doing at the time.

The team had to move to other counties to play games and he had the perfect transportation, a 15 passenger van, so all the team could fit together.

He used to buy sodas for everyone because it was so hot. He also used to buy expensive imported balls from the United States. Many times, he worked only to buy things for the team.

As time went by, people began to recognize that we were a good team. In two years, we were the number one state team. Everyone was scared to play against us. We were happy and proud to be born and raised in that ghetto.

Perhaps I'm being a little unfair to other established heroes. After all, my father didn't rescue a person from a burning building. But I feel confident that others would like to thank that great hero and father of ours because

he taught us a lot of things that we have been using in our day to day lives. He taught us to be fair, humble, kind, independent. We also learned to be rebels and to be open to new ideas.

I don't know if he was a perfect man, but he did his best. I would like to tell him again that we are grateful for his love and devotion. I wish I would’ve written him a hundred Thank You notes. He deserved it.

He was our best friend. We will be eternally grateful for his sharing of his knowledge with us.

Heroes have special characteristics: courage, passion, determi-nation to accomplish their goals no matter the challenging risks and obstacles. Heroes also possess integrity, honesty, confi-dence, patience and selflessness. They care about making the world a better place and they show kindness for others. In the course of my life, I have met many people who have in-spired me to be a better human being. But it all started with my mother. She is my first hero. My mother was an exceptional woman, with many virtues and unshakable, unbreakable ethics. She was always ready to help others with a smile on her face. I always remember her smiling and doing things for the wellfare of others. I miss her a lot and I remember her every day of my life. I want to emulate her. I thank God for having her as my mother and for having given me all those teachings and life ex-periences that have helped me to become the person I am now. Thank you, mom. I love you forever. I live my life with the philosophy that I can do everything that I

want to do. Yes, I am positive and I believe in myself. I think that I can be a hero through the manners, values, ethics and teachings that my family has given me.

I believe that every human being can be a hero, putting into practice the characteristics of the heroes that they have known. All of us, we just have to always give the best version of ourselves to others.

On Thursday, OCTOBER 24TH , it was windy in Las Vegas. No matter. The students of CCSD’s Dept. of Adult Education took advantage of the opportunity to visit a Career Fair on campus. Vendors from various trade schools, colleges, and employment centers were availa-ble to help students discover what might be their next step after completing high school. Many discovered new options for their futures that they hadn’t considered previously.

The Career Fair was a great success!

JUST FOR YOU!! EDITORIAL– A LAST WORD

GRATITUDE. This is our emotion that relates to our ability to feel and express thankfulness and appreciation. Recent studies have found that expressing gratitude improves mental, physical and relational well-being. Being grate-ful also impacts the overall experience of happiness, and these effects tend to be long-lasting. Benefits of Gratitude

Greater optimism and happiness, Improved feelings of connection in times of loss or crises Increased self-esteem Heightened energy levels Strengthened heart, immune system, and decreased blood pressure Improved emotional and academic intelligence Expanded capacity for forgiveness Decreased stress, anxiety, headaches Improved self-care and greater likelihood to exercise Heightened spirituality -- ability to see something bigger than ourselves

I recently heard a story about a guy whose life was a disaster. He was miserable, broke, overweight, and on his second divorce living in a crumby apartment in Las Vegas with no air conditioning. He was an attorney and he couldn’t afford to pay his employees their Christmas bonuses because his clients weren’t paying their bills on time --- and sometimes not paying them at all. Here’s what he did to turn things around. He had an epiphany while he was hiking in the hills of Las Vegas on New Year’s Day. He decided that his goal was to write one thank you note each day for the next year, for a total of 365 thank you notes. He wanted to find a reason to be thankful and grateful every single day. So, he wrote those thank you notes and over the course of the year, it taught him to value the good things and it created a discipline of positive focus. Really, it’s true that gratitude presses outwards and that it creates good feelings in the universe which comes back to you eventually. Be Aware. These notes should be snail mailed or, better yet, hand delivered. Receiving a hand written thank you card delivers a special meaning. When you receive something from a machine, there's inevitably a feeling that the machine generated it and it's disposable. When someone you're trying to sincerely thank receives a hand written note, that's going to make you stand out. It’s going to create something around you that sets you apart. Expressing gratitude will give you positive emotions, but the purpose of writing the notes is because it’s the right thing to do. Maybe it’s our natural tendency to notice the bad things that happen to us each day. But, instead, what if we fo-cused on one good thing? If you’re interested in practicing gratitude by writing thank you notes, make it fun and chal-lenge yourself to write a thank you note each week. You’ll notice the more you write, the better your notes will get. Gratitude is one of those rare things you get more of by giving it away. BTW, students, colleagues, THANK YOU for the deep enrichment you give to my life. May you enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday with loved ones.
