Pastor’s Corner

The Redeemed of the Lord

You and I have been held captive to sin, but

Christ has purchased our pardon and set us at liberty. When a person has this life-changing experience, he will want to sing, "Redeemed, redeemed, redeemed!"

I thank God that he lifted me out of the miry pit of sin and gave me a firm foundation. Every one of us was caged up in Satan’s trap. We were worthless creatures, without any redeeming qualities whatsoever. But thank God that He saw something in us worth dying for.

God chose you and God chose me! He loved you and me when we were unlovable and dead in sin, and he loved us so much that he gave his only Son to redeem us back to him.

In the beginning we were created in God’s own image. We were created as the apple of his eye and we were created to serve him, love him and worship him. We were created to live forever in one-on-one relationship with God but then sin entered the picture and all of that tender loving care that God had taken in creating us was nullified as Satan laid claim to every living soul.

Even though we were created in God’s image, we lived for the devil. Even though we were meant to soar in heavenly places, we chose to scratch around in the filth of this world. I know that we aren’t the ones who brought sin into the world. Adam did that by listening to Satan’s lies, but I believe that if Adam had not failed God, I would have, and if I had not brought sin into the world, then you would have.

We still rebel against God all too often right now so we can’t point a finger of accusation at Adam and Eve when we know that we are no better than they.

Because of sin, we were snatched from our place in God and put into a prison with bars that could not be broken. Our feet were destined to walk in a world that just keeps pulling us deeper into sin. Our heart was destroyed and our every thought was for evil.

But praise the Lord that wasn’t the end of the story! Mankind was destined for eternal punishment

but my loving Lord saw my need and he came down and redeemed me – bought me back from the pit with his own blood.

Isaiah says that we should never forget the pit that we were redeemed out of, but that’s not where our heart and mind should dwell. We can’t live in the past sins and allow those things to continually drag us down and renew the feelings of guilt over and again. There’s something better to think about now!

We can think about Jesus, the Rock who lives in us and makes us his own. We are founded upon a Rock. We are a part of that Rock. That Rock is Christ!

The redeemed of Lord should not have our eyes fastened upon the things of the world. Our vision must be higher, our dreams must be eternal, and our finish line is in Heaven, not on this earth. The things around us will be burned away in the smoke and fire of God’s wrath.

Even scientists tell us that the earth is wearing out. I’m not sure that I believe every report of doom and gloom when it comes to the shortages of natural resources, but if those things are true it’s only because the earth is dying. God is bringing this all down to judgment and one day all of it will be forever abolished because of the power of sin.

This old body of flesh is getting older too. The effects of sin upon this flesh are irreversible. Jesus redeemed my soul but he didn’t come to save this body. It is still destined to die or be gloriously changed in the rapture of the church.

Yes, everything is growing older. The earth itself is wearing out. Every day that we live we are drawing one day closer to the time that we all must lay aside this tabernacle of flesh and leave this world to enter the next.

Thank God that there is hope beyond this life and that there is life beyond the grave! Aren’t you glad for redemption? Aren’t you glad that you have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus?

Bible Verse O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and

praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things planned long ago.

—Isaiah 25:1

Thought God's actions are not reactions to current situations, but part of his long term plan to bring redemption. Yes, he has done marvelous things: he took the evil intent of a mob who cried "Crucify him" and turned it into an opportunity to fulfill the prophets and redeem us. He is perfect in faithfulness and has done marvelous things.

Prayer Holy God, you surprise me with new wonders and new things daily. Yet deep in my heart I know they are not new to you. Thank you for not making life boring or predictable so I might thirst after you, you who are forever fresh, new, exciting, and marvelous. In the name of my Savior, Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Restoring Hope Making A Difference

Becoming A Partnership in Life

THREE STEPS TO MAKING YOUR COMMITMENT

PRAY Be still and ask the Lord. Pray with your family. This is the most important step in preparing your heart to respond to God’s call to action. Ask Him what He would have you give to make this vision a reality at Second

Baptist Church. Remember, these are gifts over and above your regular tithes.

STEP OUT IN FAITH Trust God to provide what He lays on your heart to give, even if the amount is more than your current resources can readily identify. Our greatest hopes and dreams are just the beginning for God. Expect the unexpected.

GIVE SACRIFICIALLY “Not equal gifts, but equal sacrifice.” There is no limit to what God will do in and through us if we commit ourselves to sacrificial giving. Ephesians 3:20-21 says, “Now to Him who, by the power that is at work within us, is able to exceedingly, abundantly, far over and above all that we dare ask, think or imagine, to Him be the glory throughout all generations, forever and ever.” I found in my life that God supernaturally and abundantly meets all my needs when I’m simply obedient to what He tells me to do. There are tremendous blessings that will overtake you when you are simply being obedient. When you stretch your faith and begin to reach out beyond your own abilities, two things begin to happen. The first thing is that your own needs become less and less significant. And the second thing is that God supernaturally begins to meet your needs in abundance. Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it…(Psalm 127:1) And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed. Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.

God Is Right There

When times in your life are hard to go through Pray for God’s peace to help comfort you When times seem so dark and you are full of despair Know that you are not alone. . .God is right there When no one can help you -Not even your best friend God can do far beyond All that you can ask or imagine When your circumstances seem almost impossible to fix That is when you’ll see God’s hand all in the mix The harder the problem is. . . The more glory He will get God just wants to show you that in a little box He will not fit So stop your worrying And in God put your trust Be patient, wait on God and know that He will not rush For every trial in life is a lesson to be learned And the way you handle the trial Is God’s main concern So turn it over to Him And you won’t fail the test and watch God’s handiwork at its very best.

In Partnership With God

A man had transformed an overgrown plot of ground into a beautiful garden and was showing a friend what he had accomplished. Pointing to a bed of flowers, he said, "Look at what I did here." His friend corrected him, "You mean, 'Look at what God and I did here'. " The gardener replied, "I know you're right. But you should have seen the shape this plot was in when He was taking care of it by himself." We chuckle at the man's reply, but it expresses a wonderful spiritual truth -- we are co-workers with God. This applies to every area of life, including prayer. It answers a question that naturally comes to mind when we reflect on Jesus's statements in Matthew 6. He said we don't need to pray on and on with vain repetitions like the pagans, because our Father knows what we need before we ask (Matthew 6:7-8). The question is, then, why pray? The answer is simple and comforting. God has graciously chosen to give us the privilege of being His partners in both the physical and spiritual areas of life. Through prayer we work with Him in defeating the powers of evil and in bringing about the fulfillment of His loving purposes in the world. Partners with God -- what a privilege! What an incentive to pray! Matthew 6:8 Do not be like them, for you Father knows what you need before you ask him. -- Herb Vanderbilt Lugi

The SBC Youth Ministry presents: A Celebration of Black History Lita F. Stallings

February is the shortest month of the year, but we pack as much black history into it as we can…and the Second Baptist Church (SBC) Youth Ministry did their part by presenting a program that celebrated it! Praise and Worship was a fine way to begin the program, after which we segued into the opening selection, Lift Every Voice and Sing, the black national anthem. Little Miss Amari Bibbs offered us the sweetest welcome and Master Christopher Carter skillfully read the scripture, Song of Solomon 1:6. Master Kiyree Queen lifted a heartfelt prayer and then the Voices of Inspiration blessed us with the first of several selections, Wade in the Water, an old spiritual. The other selections included: Steal Away (with talented soloists, Master Aaron Bibbs, Miss Carmen Chavis and Master Kiyree Queen); Swing Low, Sweet Chariot , another old spiritual (with more talented soloists, Miss Mireya Maldonado and Master Chris Carter); I’m Looking for a Miracle rounded out the selections. The songs were nestled in between a couple of poetry readings, yours truly read On the Pulse of the Morning by Dr. Maya Angelou and Rev. Thompson read The Negro Speaks of Rivers by Mr. Langston Hughes; we were also witness to interviews with historical African American figures in skit form. The play setting was a television studio and the premise was that it was a television show entitled “Life Lessons”, which was dedicated to presenting interviews with historical African American figures. It was inspired by Oprah’s “Super Soul Sunday”, which appears on OWN. (Note: I was very proud of the youth because I wrote the play in such a way that the youth chose which historical figure they wanted to represent and then had to do research to answer the provided interview questions.) It was written, by design, to encourage education.

Master Aidan Bibbs was the narrator; he expertly set the scene for what was going to happen. Miss Starr Rose was our “Oprah”, our interviewer; she did a great job interacting with the guests. The first interview of the evening with was Ms. Harriet Tubman (Miss Mireya Maldonado), an inspiring civil rights activist who had a large hand in facilitating the Underground Railroad. Starr recognized a celebrity guest in the studio audience, Ms. Kerry Washington, (Miss Kayla Armstrong-Dock), who was permitted to ask one question of the interviewee. Likewise, when the next interviewee, Mr. Jesse Owens, portrayed by Miss Carmen Chavis, was in the interview seat, Mr. LeBron James (Master Kiyree Queen), a celebrity guest in the

Page 8: The Second Miler - sbcfallschurch.org

studio audience, asked a question. Master Christopher Carter portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and was the third interview of the evening; his celebrity questioner was Ms. Taraji P. Henson (Mrs. Kenisha Armstrong-Dock). Our final interview was with Master Aaron Bibbs, who portrayed our former and favorite president, Mr. Barack Obama and Rev. Al Sharpton (Master Aitrell Dock) was the celebrity questioner from the studio audience. The youth were so articulate in their questions and responses and they were funny when needed; they did such an awesome job! Great performances by all!

Rev. Thompson and Rev. Barnhart gave remarks and then the Voices of Inspiration were encouraged to sing two more songs: Trouble Don’t Last Always (Master Chris Carter, soloist) and I Need Just a Little More Jesus (Starr Rose, soloist). The program gave us a history lesson in an enjoyable way and the music was top notch, as always! We thank God for another GOOD day at SBC!

SBC Choir Day Lita F. Stallings

The Second Baptist Church (SBC) Music Ministry held their annual Choir Day on Sunday, February 25, 2018. Members of the music ministry had been involved in workshops the entire weekend, which culminated in the concert that Sunday. The musicians had their session Friday night and the vocalists were in their workshop Saturday. The clinicians were Professor Gerry Gillespie, a University of District of Columbia Gospel Studies instructor (musicians) and Mr. Vaughn Byrd of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Stafford, VA (vocals). Our Minister of Music, Rev. Kevin Thompson, put together a nice weekend of music study for the participants and the congregation benefited from their hard work Sunday.

Mr. Vaughn Byrd also served in the capacity of worship leader for Choir Day and he did a phenomenal job. Mt. Salvation Baptist Church, Arlington, VA is one of our sister churches and their praise team came to worship with us and usher in the Holy Spirit. Job well done, Mt, Salvation! After Rev. Thompson introduced Mr. Byrd and the call to worship was given, we welcomed the choir, which was comprised of SBC’s Sanctuary Choir, Men’s Choir, Women’s Choir and Voices of Inspiration. Master Aaron Bibbs was the only youth in the choir, but he hung in there like a trouper and did a number of the lead parts! Rev. Thompson did the other solos. The musicians played I Love to Praise Him as the fantastic choir, dressed in black and white, processed into the sanctuary. Next, the congregation

joined voices to sing a rousing rendition of the black national anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing. Mrs. Iris Robinson read the scripture, the 100th Psalm in its entirety and Rev. Thompson lifted an inspirational prayer. Trustee and Mrs. Ronnie & Ann Inge were quite the power couple with their tag team welcome; it was warm and heartfelt.

The combined choir looked great and sounded fantastic as they ministered to the congregation through songs such as: Every Praise; We are God’s Soldiers; There’s a Brighter Day Ahead; Run & Tell That; Praise Him/Shine on Me medley; Thank You; I’m Looking for a Miracle (after vocals were done, we were blessed the instrumental stylings of Rev. Thompson on digital piano, Mr. Lynel Dock on Hammond organ & Mr. Allen Caesar on percussion – it had a sort of jazz feel and was very moving.) Master Aitrell Dock was called up to play on the final two selections – Let’s Have a Good Time and Ain’t That Good News; he is also a talented percussionist.

Rev. Thompson and Rev. Barnhart gave remarks, but not benediction! Rev. Thompson invited our worship leader, Mr. Vaughn Byrd, a whiz on the organ, to play for us. We were delighted when he played (and sang!) Only a Look. I can attest that God has given him at at least two gifts, because I witnessed them first hand! He closed out the program and we are so glad his shared his gifts with us. Thank God for another GOOD day at SBC!

Joyce turns 70! Lita F. Stallings

It was a rainy night. The date was February 24, a

Saturday. The venue was the Waterford in Springfield, VA. The ballroom was beautifully decorated. The guests were elegantly dressed as they milled about greeting one another. The food was in place. The DJ was spinning tunes. The theme was “I’m Blessed.” The occasion was Joyce Murray-Laing’s 70th birthday and we were ready to celebrate her! I kid you not…this youthful lady has reached her three-score & ten and we were honored to

Page 9: The Second Miler - sbcfallschurch.org

help her celebrate being blessed to see it. The lady of honor was resplendent in her semi-formal ankle length black dress; she looked stunning! And she wore the biggest smile all evening.

Upon arrival, guests were greeted by the honoree and her husband Milton and/or Nobue or Zenobia, her daughters; all were on hand to welcome guests. We were made to feel very welcome. After greeting friends, you were invited to have a seat at any of the tables scattered about the room. The ballroom was lovely and the smiles of the honoree and friends we hadn’t seen in a while only served to enhance the experience. Joyce had family and friends there from near and far. A book of memories, featuring tributes and pictures, had been created and there was one on each table for guests to peruse. The book was artfully created, and quite imaginative. Additionally, an international bread, cheese and fruit buffet was available for pre-dinner nibbling and an open bar beckoned from across the room for those who were thirsty!

Zenobia served as Mistress of Ceremony and welcomed us graciously, after which Joyce thanked everyone for coming and explained how blessed she felt and how much she loved each person in the room. There were also tributes from her best friend (he was not able to be there, but had sent a written tribute that Zenobia read); her in-laws; her coworkers and her family. Her brother Phil gave the family tribute and also raised a toast in her honor. Rev. Kevin Thompson offered a moving vocal tribute, accompanied by Mr. Jay Ingram, who also spoke words of appreciation to Joyce. She is a wonderful lady; very generous and kind and she is deserving of all the complimentary remarks and tributes offered that evening. The love she exudes was given right back to her; it was very present in the room that night.

We also enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner of Chicken Piccata, Fresh Salmon finished with a cream sauce, Roasted Italian Vegetables, Green Beans Amandine, Creamy Mashed Potatoes, Wild Rice Pilaf, Tossed Garden Salad and Rolls. A very impressive cupcake bar completed our meal. After dinner, tributes and concluding remarks from the honoree, dancing commenced. It looked like everyone had a great time! I spoke with Zenobia and she shared the following: “The hard work and the little details made the preparations all worthwhile. Everyone came out to celebrate and the photographers captured every moment. There was not an empty space in the room. The guests commented on the upbeat, classy nature of the event and how we know how to throw a party! Dancing shoes were put on and guests took to the floor to

dance the night away. We had a blast!” Such truth in those words! I would be remiss if I did not mention the party favors each guest received – a bottle of sparkling cider and a Hershey’s chocolate bar, both adorned with Joyce’s lovely face and a thank you message; a very nice touch.

Joyce, we can see that you are blessed, we wish you many more birthdays and thank God for the blessing that you are to so many! Cheers to you!

In a small southern town during the 1970s, Mason and his teen age friends have a special relationship with the young, hip, cool, suave, Rev. Tremmel, pastor of the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. The young men admire Rev. Tremmel and his beautiful, sophisticated wife, Ms. Sonya. However, Mason discovers that Rev. Tremmel is not what he appears to be. His mesmerizing façade eventually unravels, revealing that Rev. Tremmel is deeply intertwined with residents of the town in ways Mason could have never imagined. Other people eventually find out who and what Rev. Tremmel really is, and someone kills him. Mason works on his own to find who did it. “It was time for him to go down. The police weren’t gonna do nothing. He had them

clowns eating out of the palm of his hand. Yes, I

killed him.”

Just For Laughs “A cheerful heart is good medicine…” Proverbs 17:22

By the time Bobby arrived, the football game had already started. "Why are you so late?" asked his friend.

"I couldn't decide between going to church and going to the football game. So I tossed a coin," said Bobby.

"But that shouldn't have taken too long." said the friend.

"Well, I had to toss it 35 times."

One day, a teacher was talking to her first grade class about whales when a little girl had a question. Little Girl: "Do whales swallow people?" Teacher: "No, even though they are much bigger than a person, they have throat pleats that filter their food of krill and plankton. Little Girl: "But Mrs. Thurston says Jonah was swallowed by a whale." Teacher getting angry: "Blue whales cannot swallow people." Little Girl: "Well, when I get to heaven I'll just ask Jonah if he was really swallowed by a whale." Teacher, still red with anger: "What if Jonah went to hell?" Girl: "Well, then you can ask him."

A Sunday School teacher decided to have her 2

nd grade class memorize Psalm 23, one of the most quoted passages in the Bible. She gave the children a month to learn the chapter.

One little boy was excited about the task, but he just couldn't memorize the Psalm. Although he practiced and practiced, he could hardly get past the first line. The day came for the children to recite Psalm 23 before the congregation. The little boy was nervous. When his turn came, he stepped up to the microphone and proudly said, "The Lord is my Shepherd and that's all I need to know!"

A man and wife rushed into a dentist's office.

The wife said, "I want a tooth pulled. I don't want gas or numbing cream or anything because I'm in a terrible hurry. Just pull the tooth as quickly as possible." "You're a brave woman," said the dentist. "Now, show me which tooth it is." "The wife turns to her husband and says, "Open your mouth and show the dentist which tooth it is, dear."
