The Grapevine The P&C Newsletter from Narrabeen North Public School Week 8, Term 4 Thursday, 2 November 2010 From the P&C President… Wow – what a dancing extravaganza! As a first time attendant, I would like to say thanks to all the kids for the wonderful entertainment. For anyone who hasn’t yet placed their order for the DVD, if you are quick you can place a last minute order in the P&C box. There is also the opportunity to submit a last minute order form for the fridge-to-go lunch boxes, however these must be placed by the end of the week. CHRISTMAS PICNIC SUNDAY 12TH DEC – EVERYONE IS INVITED!! Don’t forget to come along to Billarong Reserve between 2-6pm for a final end of year picnic. This is a free event. Games will be held between 4–5pm to add to the fun. Please bring your own picnic. In the event of rain the event will be cancelled. Fingers crossed that the sun shines before then. A reminder and clarification about the cookbook. Many of you have realised that the deadline for the submission of recipes was during the school holidays. No, this was not a misprint. The reality is that the best possible outcome for our organisers is to have your recipes submitted by the end of this term. There are three very important reasons for this:- 1. A huge amount of work needs to be done on a task like this and we don’t want the whole school community submitting their recipes at the last possible minute as we will be at risk of not being able to get the book organised by our deadlines next year. 2. All new parents will be given the opportunity to submit recipes in the new year so the organiser will already have this part of the project to coordinate in the new year. 3. To Keep the cost of the cookbook as affordable as possible we are aiming to offer corporate advertising in the book from local companies, however there are many different possible formats and layouts of the book but the final layout depends entirely on how many submissions we receive (hence we need your submissions before we can move forward). The layout we select also impacts the cost of the advertising for these outside companies, we cannot source this advertising until we know which package we can offer them. Again another time consuming part of the project. It was due to the consideration of the wonderful Monica Triant (the co-ordinator of this event), that she has offered to work over the holiday period so the deadline of the event can be extended past the end of school term, to take into account the particularly busy time of Christmas and end of year functions. As the recipes are all submitted on line or can be sent directly to the co-ordinator there is no need for the re-commencement of school to hinder your submissions. We hope you can appreciate the need for haste from our point of view and please keep those recipes coming. The three performances were extremely well received by the audiences and everyone was impressed with the talent on show. Special congratulations to our drummer, Jacob White for his spectacular opening act! Well done! The performances are the natural conclusion of an educational program where our students actually get to put into action what they have been learning. It was clearly evident that they enjoyed the experience! Here’s to a great show once again in 2011!! My School Website I understand that the 2010 My School website which was to be released publicly on Friday, 3 December has been delayed indefinitely by the Education Minister Peter Garrett. More information will follow when it becomes available. 2010 Annual School Report – Parent Surveys It is a DET requirement that in the preparation of the 2010 NNPS Annual School Report (ASR) that parents, staff and students are surveyed in three mandatory areas for evaluation. We must evaluate a curriculum area, a management area and survey overall satisfaction with the school. This year our curriculum area for evaluation is SPELLING and our management area is SCHOOL CULTURE. Staff and students are currently completing online Zoomerang surveys in the three areas. The parent surveys open today and will stay open until Monday, 6 December. I invite you to go online and complete the surveys. Each survey should only take a couple of minutes. The final results will be published in the 2010 ASR which will be available in early 2011. The addresses for the three surveys are: School culture: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22BJ434DNXT/

Kindergarten 2011

If your child is starting school in 2011 and you have not as yet collected your

information bag could you please do so as soon as possible.

This pack contains important information

for starting school next year!

Spelling: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22BJ43VDPF4/ School satisfaction: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22BJ46CDQXB/ Paper copies of the surveys are available from the school office if you are unable to access the internet. Thank you for your cooperation and happy zoomeranging! Sentence of the week – guest class – 6W PART TWO - After 6W read the poem ‘Ations’ by Shel Silverstein, we wrote our own version of the poem. We didn’t realise just how many ‘ation’ words there actually are. To give a fact or receive information, When it’s your birthday, That’s a celebration (Nathan Williams) Konnichiwa means “hi” in Japan, That’s a salutation. (Emma Chattaway) When you do CPR on a person, That’s resuscitation. (Milica Obradovic) If you give me directions on where to go, That’s navigation. (Natalie Welsh) If you booked a five star hotel in the city, That’s fancy accommodation. (Liam Moir) When you build your speed up, That’s acceleration. (Travis Crimmins) When you come to the end of a journey or voyage, That’s the destination. (Jennaya Wiggins) If you see a dance concert that makes you want to dance, That’s inspiration. (Chelsea Forrest) If we had to leave a building because of a fire, That’s an evacuation. (Shaylyn O’Mara) Oh! Look over there, it’s a big spotty dog, It’s called a dalmation. (Maggie Smythe) If you do a loud burp and your co-workers hear, That’s humiliation. (Elise Black) If I help you at school and you help me, That’s cooperation. (Kasmira Pattison) When we resolve disputes, That’s arbitration. (Kamran Khalid)

Page 3 The Grapevine

If you learn great things, You are getting a fabulous education. (Emile Mau’U) When you finish Year 6, That’s our graduation. (Yasmin Mirosch) My poem is great, But that is just my explanation. (Monique Nero) Planning for classes in 2011 The school year in 2011 begins on Friday, 28 January as a school development day for staff. Year 1 to Year 6 students start school on Monday, 31 January. (This week is actually counted as Week 2.) As in previous years, students will stay in their 2010 class groups with their 2010 teacher for the week as our enrolment numbers are confirmed. Once we have a solid idea of our actual enrolment, classes will move into their 2011 class as soon as possible. There is a chance that this could happen before the end of week 2 2011. Our new kindergarten students will be involved in the ‘Best Start’ assessment program on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 2 and their first real school day will be Thursday, 3 February. Robert Blanchfield.

First LEGO League at Macquarie University, Saturday December 4

During Term 3 and continuing through Term 4 a team of Stage 2 and 3 students have been involved in a Robotics program with expertise provided by Luan Heimlich from Macquarie University. Robotics involves programming NXT Robots to complete given missions including transporting LEGO items, and using rotation and light sensors. For the first time Narrabeen North Public School has entered the First LEGO League Challenge which focuses on a real-world topic related to the Sciences. Each challenge within the competition revolves around a theme and for 2010 it is Biomedical Engineering. Students will be designing and programming an NXT Robot and will practise missions to complete in a variety of challenges at Macquarie University on December 4. Students will also prepare a project on a chosen topic (related to Biomedical Engineering) to present to judges at the Robotics Challenge

Please come along to cheer on the Narrabeen North team and watch 57 teams complete their team challenges. Details of the day are available at the Office and as an additional attachment to this newsletter.
