PRESIDENTS REPORT

8 NORTH NARRABEEN SLSC INC.

This year our members demonstrated a terrific attitude and attention whilst doing our main job, andthat is patrolling our beach.

Our beach is unique with a huge 2km stretch, but of a bigger concern our treacherous lake entrance. We are continually patrolling this area along with the Council Lifeguard who in conjunction with us do an outstanding job with those members of the public new to our beach. In saying that, That is our job!

Thanks to Dean Dallwitz and his band of patrolling clubbies. You are our backbone!

We performed 26 rescues, administered first-aid 81 times, did 4 seaches and took 924 preventative actions. We also had 27 members achieve 100% patrol status. Quite an achievement!

This year we reached a new high as far as club membership topping 1000. This has also kept Gordy Coburn, Dale Ferrington, Steve Haggett, Angie Thorpe, Andy Cross, Jarna More and John Perry with our strong education programme busy training and upskilling our patrolling members.

This year saw 28 new bronze medallion and 12 SRC awards here at Northy. Our Gym Junkies are also a happy lot with daily training sessions.

This year again saw us host a First Aid Carnival and the Inter Branch Boat Carnival which was moved twice and ended up at Fisherman’s Beach. We also hosted the beach events of the Branch Championships. My out take here is we are a club on the rise, and that also comes with hard work and a good social and work ethic.

Our bar continues to be our flagship and without Greg Kelly and Brian Blackmore’s tireless work our club would not be in the financial position we find ourselves in. Our Café also continues to grow in popularity, adds security but most of all gives us a place to meet. Thanks also to Kathleen and her merry team of Brazillians!!

Competition- Our Nippers again grew in numbers. Led by John Perry and Dave Johnson, they have

Page 10: Vigilance and Service - North Narrabeen SLSC€¦ · Certificate in 1962, and was on the Manly Warringah Board of Examiners. He represented Manly Warringah in Presidents Cup Rugby

enjoyed success both on our beach and also in interclub competition. It is a great view on Sunday mornings from the deck. They too have a hard working committee and age managers so well done there also. The boat arena was also a big improver this year with the purchase of a new boat and competition tent. Led by John Beaumont and Lee Phillips we had eight crews competing this year. With the return of Don and Carol McManus also back to the White Caps, our rowers led by our Open Women’s Crew served with distinction. Are the glory days of North Narrabeen returning?

The funds we have raised this year has resulted with the upgrade of the kitchen, office and lifesavingequipment that we have purchased. Our club is in good hands with Graeme Jephcote’s tireless work improving our club’s appearance for us to enjoy. With New Years Eve Celebrations, Campers nights,

thanks Rod, and our Sunday afternoons band’s with Blatchford’s Kitchen we are a good place to be.

To our Sponsors, Supporters, Associate Members and those who patronise our club, we at Northy thank you.

Last but not least, our committee. These people work hard, give up their time so we can all be proud to callour club home. I know I have missed a few here but you know who you are. We look forward to an even bigger growth in the coming years!

Steve MaxwellNN President.

Well it seems so long ago that our 2017/2018 season started. With commencement of rego days and our committee on hand welcoming new families and nippers to the club and also our returning members.

We once again had a great year for the number of nippers and associates registered this year. Nippers alone was close to 400 registered for 2017/2018 Season.

We were also able to encourage some of our members to enrol in doing their Bronze Medallion Course. A great achievement for everyone to complete and feel a sense of pride in their efforts on becoming a lifesaver for NNSLSC.

We have had some fantastic events at the club with our Halloween Night and Twilight Nippers, Points Days and Club Championships and also a visit from Santa and his little helper at Christmas Break, which is always a favourite with our little ones. BBQ’s have been great and I would like to thank everyone for stepping in to do their bit for their Age Group. More help is always needed on these days, so please remember to do your bit and help out. It is a great way to meet and make new friends and have a bit of fun at the same time.

Board Training, Sprint Training have been well attended with one special group being the group of Nippers that were coached by our own Angus Marshall. Nothing but praise and admiration for Angus for doing such an awesome job coaching “The Groms”. All the kids loved having Angus as their coach and improved their skills enormously. It was great to see these kids get out into the surf and have a crack at catching some waves. Thanks to all the parents taking part in the Water Safety.

We also had Bodi Smith, one of our regular North Narrabeen Professional Lifeguards and former NN Nipper, taking charge of the older kids and putting them through their paces in the waves. So much encouragement from Bodi with these kids showing them the ropes and taking on some boomers throughout the season. Many thanks also to Mark Byrne, Darren Marshall, Mark Beauchop, John Tyson and Aaron McGregor for helping out with water safety throughout the year.

Another touch this year was our Sprint Training

coach, Emma Lincoln Smith. Emma started out the year with some enthusiastic kids and with good numbers and results showed with the early carnivals.

Carnivals have been a highlight this year, with some good results early in the season at Queenscliff and North Steyne beach events. Under 8’s being allowed to compete in their first beach carnival with good results. Branch Water carnival at Collaroy Beach and then Branch Beach Only at North Narrabeen. Some fantastic results on the beach from our Nippers. It was so great to see so many NN Competitors performing so well and standing on the Medal Platform on home turf at Branch. We had some NN Competitors go to State to compete at Swansea with some great efforts and PB’s and a placing against the best in the State. Congratulations all competitors for taking part.

I encourage everyone to keep an eye out for when there are carnivals on to participate as much as possible. A lot of events are Team Based, so we need as many NN Competitors as possible, putting their hands up to compete and take part as often as possible.

Kids that were once U/6 Nippers have now grown to gain their SRC and start helping out Patrolling North Narrabeen Beach. Congratulations to all that have completed and gained their SRC this year. I hope to see many more Nippers taking part and joining our Patrols. Thanks to our CTO Gordy Coburn and Steve Haggett for taking these kids and putting them through their training.

As I said before we had many of our Nipper Parents complete and gain their Bronze Medallions. A great achievement by everyone and you all should be very proud for what you have done. Not only that, our water safety has increased. Thank you for taking time out to do your course. Thanks also to Angie Thorpe and Andy Cross for training you guys up and gaining your Bronze Medallion. Good Luck to the rest of our Bronze Medallion candidates doing their training. Our nippers does not happen without the help of our committee. People giving up their time to volunteer so that we can provide a happy and safe place for the kids to come to and enjoy.

It is with great pleasure that I submit my Lifesaving Report for the 2017/18 Patrol Season.

This was my second year as Club Captain at North Narrabeen and follows two years as Vice Club Captain to Glenn Jones. This year I will be standing down as Club Captain due to work and family commitments but hope to return in the future when time permits. This gives the opportunity for someone to rise to the challenge and lead our great club to higher places. I look forward to assisting those in their new committee roles so there is a smooth handover.

We have gone strength to strength over the past few years, growing in numbers to almost 150. We have had a lot of investment in equipment over the past few years, with the committee endorsing the purchase of two brand new IRB motors most recently. The patrol equipment trailer seems to be standing up well and continuing to make setup and pack up of patrols just that little bit easier.

We had 13 patrol groups this season, ten active and three active reserves, loosing one active reserve patrol from last year as two combined to form one. While we have been down one active patrol this year we have been able to grow each patrol group to 8 or more, providing needed flexibility considering our busy lives and the fact it can be difficult, no matter how hard we try, to get a sub sometimes.

My job would be impossible without all of you, the members, that give their time each patrol to make our beaches safe. I take great pride in all the 148 members that patrolled this season, at one of the most dangerous beaches in the Northern Beaches branch area.

Here are some stats from the 2017/2018 season for North Narrabeen.- 7572 total patrolled hours- 924 Preventative Actions- 81 First aids- 27 Rescues- 0 lives lost!

A special thanks also goes to John Perry, who

takes a lot of pressure off my job. He looks after all the IRB’s, motors, ATV and equipment, keeps the fuel cupboard full, organizes repairs, transports equipment for servicing and more. The list goes on and on. I couldn’t have done this job without you.Thank you to Gordy “I’m just sayin” Coburn, Chief Training Officer, Steve “I love acting the part” Haggett and Angie “Respect my Authoritah” Thorpe. Because of the commitment of these people and their assistant trainers we have more awards on more patrols than any time in my history at the club.

Dale Ferrington, thank you for taking our IRB training to a new level and suiting up in your wetsuit on cold days. We always struggle to keep up our IRBD and C awards, but over the last few years Dale and those that have assisted him have really made an impact in this area.

Andy Cross, my 2IC this year, thank you for your never-ending positivity, supporting nature and smiling face. You are a positive energy that impacts everyone that meets you and we are so lucky have you and Angie and your family at our club.Kurt Stahmer, our First Aid Officer, thank you mate for keeping all our first aid equipment in shape and properly stocked for yet again, another year. You are our “under the radar” man, often not seen, but results of your work greatly appreciated.

To those awards I had the pleasure of presenting at award night.• LifesaveroftheYear:JamiePaardekooper-The most humble and reliable man I know• Rookieoftheyear:AnteaCrvelin–Ourfuture Club Captain and Club President!• PatroloftheYear:Patrol5–JohnBeaumontand his patrol performed an excellent rescue over the season, just missing out on Recue on the month. Well done. Your awards are well deserved.

And with that, I sign off for the 2017/18 season. Everyone enjoy your down time and I look forward to seeing you on the beach again in 2018/19.

Sincerely,Dean Dallwitz“The Captain”

It has been another busy year for the Education side of the club, we have improved in all areas, with an outstanding result at the Awards of Excellence Evening for the Branch, coming 4th in the overall point score for the Most Outstanding Club an improvement from last year’s 14th position. In the Education area we were in 2nd place only 3.64 pts away from the winner. Great work team.

During the season we had our share of Beach closures and difficult surf conditions, but used to our advantage the rock pool and the Narrabeen Lakes when open to the sea for training, ensuring our members were fully prepared for the Assessments.

Great effort by the training team, many thanks for your effort and hours on deck assisting with proficiencies and over all education in all the awards.

TRAINERS were leaded by the “Mastro CTO” - Gordy Cockburn, Steve Haggett, Andy Cross, Angie Thorpe and Dale Ferrington

PROBATIONARY TRAINERS - John Perry, Antea Allegra Crvelin and Mark Byrnes (SRC)

CLUB ASSESSORS–GordyCockburn,SteveHaggett,Andy Cross, and Angie Thorpe CLUB FACILITATOR - Steve HaggettThe Team carried out SRC/Bronze/ARTC updates over several nights (Dry) and many more Sundays doing the Wet component, using the Club Sunday Morning Swims, but including extra Board & Tubes Rescues. Well done Northy, a great response to lift the standard of our Patrolling members.

Other Proficiencies include Spinal facilitated by Steve and Gordy, IRB ran by Andy and Dale.

THE FUTUREThe Education team aims to continue to encourage all members to obtain more awards to support the Juniors, Cadets and improve our Patrolling members skills and knowledge by promoting and running the required awards necessary to Patrol our beach.

We need to continue to encourage members in order to maintain the enthusiasm the club has built up over the seasons. This process will be complimented by assisting members in achieving their goals via a mentoring process both on patrol and outside the patrol using interests in competition and even in training and assessing.

The 2017/18 season was an exciting one in the world of surf boats at North Narrabeen. The sun had barely set on the previous season when we found ourselves welcoming home one of our Life Members- Don MacManus. The commissioning of a new boat the “Ted Whittaker”, and an influx of new Members/ rowers was always going to set the scene for a positive season.

The NN Bags (OPEN MALE crew made up by Matt Fox, Ed Blackall, Lee Phillips, John Beaumont, swept by Don MacManus) took a big step up this season and welcomed the challenge of competing in the Open Male division- the first NN crew to do so in over a decade. The boys naturally had some reservations early, but as the season progressed proved to themselves and the opposition that they could compete at the highest level.Branch Ranking: 4/ National Ranking: 29

The NN Broadbeans (OPEN FEMALE crew made up by Alice Clarke, Hayley Beckerleg, Laini Collyer, Aleisha Pollicina, swept by Don MacManus) came to the Club with exceptional racing pedigree. By their own admission, they set the bar high in terms of expectation of results. They were the first crew to represent NN in the elite Ocean Thunder Series, making the final in all four rounds of the series. They fell victim to the ‘commentators curse’ in the final event where they had it won if not for a roll on the winning wave. Season highlights include Branch Points Score and Championship GOLD medallists, SNB representatives and State Title BRONZE medallists.Branch Ranking: 1/ National Ranking: 10

The NN Smokos (RESERVE MALE crew made up by Lachlan MacDonald, Dave Fealy, Billy Maxwell, Jimmy Quirk, swept by Don MacManus) on their day were as fast as any Reserves crew. They made huge improvements as the season progressed, however consistency was their Achilles heel in competition. Highlights for the boys included a SILVER medal at Branch Championships. There is no lack of power and athleticism in the boat, and we look forward to what next season brings.Branch Ranking: 5/ National Ranking 29

The NN Darts (RESERVE MALE/ 180 MASTERS crew made up by Michael Rees-Evans, Aaron Gibby, Rhys Blackburn, Steve Barrett, swept by Dave Williams) proved just how important it is to have a strong and experienced Masters Crew at the Club. They developed a healthy rivalry and provided a good yard stick for the Smokos in the early part of the season, and were an invaluable source of knowledge to the younger rowers. Competitively the Darts were GOLD medallists at the Branch Championships, which they carried over to Aussies where they were the highest ranked SNB crew in the 180 yrs Division- making the semi-final.Branch Ranking: 1/ National Ranking: 13

The NN Baguettes (RESERVE FEMALE crew made up by Katie Kirkpatrick, Tara Paddon, Bec Timbs, Tamsin Eadie, swept by Don MacManus) had a breakout season in the Reserves Female category. Although a new crew as a collective four, the bones have been there for a couple of seasons and was great to see the girls rewarded for their efforts. Last season we said we expected sharp improvements and this rang true. The Baguettes were one of the most consistent crews making the semi-final (final 8) at both major carnivals- ASRL Open and Aussie Titles…finishing with NN’s highest National Ranking. The NN Nuggets (U/23 FEMALE crew made up by Antea Crvelin, Tamara Alford, Letitia Alford, Marissa Curnow, swept by Don MacManus) came a long way throughout the season. There was an interesting dynamic within the crew with the bookends at extreme ends of the experience scale- Marissa in her last season of 23’s, and Antea at 16 years of age in her first season of rowing. The girls were able to make this work finishing 2nd in the Branch Point Score and making the semi-final at Aussies. The platform has been set for future successes in this age group. Branch Ranking: 2/ National Ranking: 15

The NN Dry Whites (U/23 FEMALE crew made up by Chloe Butler, Aleesha Gibby, Katelyn Jackson, Tara Jenkins, swept by Dave Williams) were a revelation and a breath of fresh air. 2/4 of these girls had never hopped in a boat prior to Christmas, yet

the girls set themselves an ambitious goal to compete prior to season end. The Dry Whites never deviated from this goal and competed at 3 events including ASRL- where conditions could be politely described as challenging. Well done!Branch Ranking: 9/ National Ranking: 26

The NN One Tonners (220 MASTERS crew made up by Bruce Kelly, Steve Maxwell, Heath Moore, Mark Dimento, swept by Dave Williams) worked hard to make sure they reached their target carnival at State Titles. It was pleasing to welcome a couple of ex-NN identities and rowers back into the fray.

On behalf of the rowers I’d like to thank the sweeps Don McManus, Dave Williams, Steve Maxwell and super-sub coach Brenden Reedy for the time spent coaching and towing the boats to and from training/ competition each week. A boat does not steer itself so thank you for keeping us all safe.

To the Committee and Club Members who took the time out to support us at local and away carnivals- it really does mean a lot to the rowers and makes us proud to represent you. I would like to make special mention to Steve Lawler and Tony Crvelin for taking time off work to tow the boat over to Perth and back. We hope you can both join us on the Gold Coast next year!

Our Sponsors DMK Forest Products, Borg Manufacturing, The Red Steer Hotel Motel, Wingman Lager and the McDermott Family- it’s an expensive sport and we appreciate your support.

Finally to the rowers. Quite simply your commitment and positivity has made this the most enjoyable season yet.

HOUSE OFFICER’S REPORT

Licencee’s Report• The Licensee documents are on display in both bars and a

copy is in the RSA register.• License & Licensee details displayed at the main bottom

door in accordance with regulations.• An Incident Register is located in the bar behind the till.• There are now some 14 RSA persons listed in the RSA

register.• The Liquor License Return was completed and submitted• The annual fee has been paid. • The spirit dispensers were recently serviced, retagged and

certified and a report for same is in the RSA register.

I would like to express a special thank you to Greg Kelly our bar manager for his service over the past six years. Also a big thank you to our bar staff.

Another big thank you to Blackie and his assistant Mario Spagnol.

I have noted over the past twelve months or more a significant number of new patrons at the bar. I have taken the opportunity on numerous occasions to welcome them to the Club and to discreetly enquire how they knew about us. Some patrons were recommended by friends and others were from the caravan park (having seen our sign on their display board), along with others who have come to the band events and realized what a great location we have. Many more of the new faces were patrons of the Café and learnt about the bar from our signage, etc.

It has come time that we have to increase our bar prices. Since our last increase in August 2015 we have already incurred fourteen rises which the Club has absorbed:• Six cost increases in relation to excise (tax on alcohol)• Four cost increases in relation to product

• Four cost increases in relation to freight/delivery

Then we will have a further increase in excise and product in August 2018.

So, as of 1 August 2018 glasses of beer; wine; sparkling; spirits and stubbies will increase by $0.50 and bottle prices proportionally.
