FROM THE BOARDROOM

We are deep in season 2014 and we are playing finals in three grades; we have secured the Club Championship for the third successive year. During the off-season we entered a relationship with the GWS GIANTS and the benefits are flowing, with many more to come in future seasons. It has been a great time to be President of our Club.

It is exciting to see our new Manly Warringah Giants playing strip and the players look dashing, and I am very pleased the design has kept our traditional colours and the concept of the sash remains evident. The new strip introduced new numbers with Premier Division squad securing the lower numbers (1, 2, 3...) and with the higher numbers moving into the next divisions – as they do in the professional AFL – recognising player at the highest level with the lower numbers. I even hear some players are trying to trade up to the lower numbered jumpers!

Our playing group has had an injection of new talent since last season and it is tremendous to see how well they have gelled into the club and are making a genuine difference to an already impressive side. Congratulation to Tom McCaffrey for his selection in the NSW Rams U19 side – a fantastic achievement. Tom, Jack Parker and others have also performed very well for the Swans Reserves.

Again we saw the coming together of the Weldon Challenge and yours truly managed to pull his boots on and play a couple of games of football and come through unscathed. It was great to see 25+ player out there enjoying the footy, both genders, and what a clinical and surgical effort from Rob Hart and others delivered as the umpires – well done to Paul Bourke and Tim Stone for organising. In fact I enjoyed it so much I touted opportunities of a comeback with coaches Brain and Rawle, and unfortunately I couldn’t quite decipher their responses under their raptures of laughter. Not wanting to waste time I will press my case to coach Fagan.

Off the field I am extremely grateful for the committed efforts to prepare and run game days – Deb & Norm Randall, Geoff Pridgeon, Shelley Parker, Alisa Kelley, Gary Wearne, Warren Rowe, Sandra Hall, Sheila for their tireless efforts. The club would be lost without you – and the canteen food is first rate! Same goes for the significant behind the scenes work including from Scott Pettersson with club development, Rob Hart managing the clubs books, Ashley Parker who has added a new freshness and discipline to the club as club secretary (and Ladies Day bartender / toy boy). Dale Washington is extracting the value from the GWS relationship. Anthony Jones has invigorated the club with his management of the sponsorship portfolio and we are pleased to welcome Hadley Green Investments (shorts sponsor) BadBoy clothing (co-sponsor on the Jumpers) to the Club, along with Body Language Brookvale (warm up singlets and clearly the gym of choice). Bartercard has signed up again and we are finally delivering real value and exposure to our many sponsors.

With our burgeoning young talented playing and experienced coaching group, a women’s team that has settled in quickly and efficiently, the mateship and bonding I see day-to-day at the club, the off-field progress, the strong volunteer base, and the access we have to professional AFL experience it is a great time to be involved with the club – the future is bright. The club match days are additionally enlivened by a well organised women’s team who display great attitude and for the many new players are quickly acquiring the basic skills (cheering team mates, looking askance at umpiring decisions and having a social chat and drink post-match).

Some of our players are planning an end of season trip to the USA where they will play a match at the US Nationals. You will doubtless find they have some innovative fund raising idea that will help the group defray the costs, so play along if you can as it is for a good cause.

Looking forward to seeing you on the sidelines supporting our teams in their respective finals series over the course of September! Let us deliver a maroon and white army to support our boys!

Ambition for 2014? See immediately above

Premier Div. have had a dream start to the season with a couple of great wins showcasing some quality football. Most notable was the back-to-back wins against last season’s grand final opponents, Pennant Hills, who entered the matches with a lot to pay back from last year – and who are pencilled in as favourites to take out this year’s flag by the majority of rival clubs and supporters.

A great win on a great day unveiling last season’s premiership flag. We have played 42 players this season, which along with the success of our Divison 2 side, confirms the depth and strength in the club. All players are contributing each game and it is definitely getting harder to select the 22.

We now look forward to testing ourselves and continue to improve in all aspects of our game as we move into the business end of the season.

I would like to thank all the players and coaching staff for their continued effort and commitment, and trust that you all continue to enjoy your footy and learn something along the way. There are a lot of people that are clearly anti-Manly and happy to air their opinion – the best response to which is continued success. We play high pressure team football; the style of play stands up in finals. We have missed some players through injury and we have exposed Under 19s and Reserves players during the season and they have been great. The Club’s future looks good. Together let’s write another bright page in the history of the Club for season 2014.

The annual Charity Day was held on Saturday 12th July under clear skies at Weldon Oval. This year we raised over $8,000 for the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, led by Social Director Michele Parker – who is also an Ambassador of VCCRI.

The highlight of the day was the traditional jumper auction. As Michele explained,“Every year a specially commissioned jersey is designed and produced in club colours for Charity Day. Our Premier Division team play in those jumpers and, at the end of the match, we auction them off to players and supporters. The jumpers have been incredibly popular over many years”. This year the jersey auction netted $3,780 with $350 being the highest price paid for captain Tyrone Armitage’s jersey. Other fund-raising activities on the day included silent auctions, raffles and food stalls.

Chairman of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Young Appeals Committee, Marcus Chang, was delighted with the result. “This is the Institute’s first partnership with the AFL and we couldn’t be happier with the support we have received from the Manly Warringah GIANTS.”

Club Secretary Ashley Parker was equally happy with the way the day unfolded. “Charity Day is one of the biggest days of the year for the Club. Our auctioneer, Hugh Zochling from club sponsor Hadley Green did a fantastic job getting the crowd fired up to purchase jumpers. Every year a different corporate sponsor is engaged and this year we were proud to have CommSec on board.”

It was a successful day on the field as well, with four of five teams snaring victories, including the Premier Division team which consolidated its spot on the top of the ladder with a 19-18-132 to 7-9-51 victory over UNSW.

PLAYER RATINGS CHARITY ROUND 2014

The AFL Sydney has had its say, and the people have spoken... who are the best footballers in Sydney? Any attempt to list the best footballers in Sydney (or anywhere else) will always be a hotly discussed topic of conversation. For example why were no women in the list (Sam Engel paid me to raise that). Also, why is it a mid-fielders paradise where are all the key position players; particularly defenders (Jack Lynch & Angus Buncle jointly paid for that one).

Sydney AFL’s ‘expert panel’ listed their Top 20 as follows, whilst the voting public saw things slightly differently:

Player Club Sydney AFL Rank

On either basis it is very clear that the players running around for our club are highly rated.

Of course from the list above the controversy will still rage. Can Levi accept his dread enemy David Stroud in the selection but not him. Will Halpin is lodging and official protest and Razzle says he should be in the list so he can do the business.

TEAM NEWS

The Div. 2 side burst out of the blocks this season, keen to atone for last season’s bitter end. Having started an impressive 6-0 this season it seemed they hadn’t skipped a beat after dominating last year. However a mid season form slump saw the team finish the regular season 6-6 thus compiling a 12-6 win/loss record enabling them to finish 4th after the home and away season.

Relative rookies to the game Tom Pyle, Nick ‘Kick it to the Big Dog’ Adams and Steve Kelly have been absolutely outstanding and have firmly cemented themselves into a side that thus far has cut through teams like a hot knife through butter. Indeed, Pyle was so good he disappeared to Premier Div. and has shown them the quality that sits below. JJ is another prime example of persistence pays. After tearing up the first half of the year in 2’s, JJ got his chance and hasn’t looked back since.

As a result of finishing 4th the team now walks the finals tight rope with any loss fatal to their premiership dream. ‘The refuse to lose tour’ started last week against Camden and after banging on the first 4 goals of the match it looked like the boys were in for a comfortable day at the office. But finals are a different beast and no win is assured until that final siren goes. Camden came hard and look to have all the momentum when a person who shall remain nameless had a brain snap and was sent from the field for the first time in his ‘cough cough’ illustrious some would say glittering 168 game career. With less than two goals separating the sides and Camden having an extra man, the Div. 2 season flashed before our eyes. Not happy to end on a sour note, the 21 remaining players dug as deep as you possibly could and ended up winning by a flattering but well deserved 24 point margin.

To our supporters I say, as long as we have a pulse we can get the job done. We will not lie down and if we aren’t lying down it means we are still standing... and we like to stand. Three more wins is our goal and having beaten two of the three teams left and falling 1 point short of the other, there is no reason why the Div. 2 side can’t go on and ‘do the business’

What club(s) did you play for before Manly Warringah? Manly Bombers (Weldon junior)

What position do you play? Anywhere and everywhere

Name your funniest team mate? Damien ‘Damo!’ Walczak

Pre-match preparation tips? Listening to what both Mitchy Motor has to say on warm ups and what Jimi Mac has to say on warm ups. They’re both mutually exclusive.

Name something you can’t live without? McDonalds chicken and cheeseburgers

Three people you’d invite to dinner and why? Ronald McDonald, Colonel Sanders and the Red Rooster. I would not have to do any previous shopping, ‘plating up’ or any washing up. Not to mention there food is delicious.

Most memorable football moment? Being invited to complete a second questionnaire for a Manly Wolves publication in as many years.

Ambition for 2014? I often get asked this same question by a number different people. And yet my answer still remains the same...

A big win against Moorebank in the first round followed by losses by less than 3 goals the following 5 weeks. That was the pattern of our season – pressing, pressing but often falling at the final hurdle. Some strong wins (North Shore, UNSW under lights) but too many games we fell just short.

As the last selected side each round, there was heavy rotation of players each game due to meet player availability across all grades, causing a number of team changes each week. This lead to inconsistent performances across games and quarters – meaning all too often we were chasing in the last quarter and not quite getting across the line. With just a touch of luck with injuries and some better kicking in some games we would be in the finals.

However, the upside is we get to support the other teams in the club as they play on. We can still win flags in three different divisions and the success of the club and other teams inspires us for next year.

The work done at training showed improvement in skills and understanding of structures, and the increased competition coming from the successful U19s side moving into senior football, will lead to moving up the ladder in 2015.

DARREN FAGAN Coach - Division 4

Page 9: Manly Warringah GIANTS Newsletter August 2014

The U19’s season has started off really well and has been very exciting. Our first win came against last year’s Division 1 Premiers in Round 2 at Weldon Oval. We have shown Weldon is our fortress dominating every contest.

While we have had varied playing group, the effort has been fantastic and getting to the finals is a just reward. We have also had the opportunity to expose some of the

playing group to Senior footy and they have earned every selection.

It’s a great season for me being involved with a skilled group that has the boys developing rapidly, learning every week and being willing to listen to everything that is said. I have also enjoyed working with Louis who has done much of the work, while allowing me a fair bit of the glory.

Keep the good work up lads, exciting times ahead! We face our first final this weekend; by any measure an amazing achievement in the first season in Div 1. Let’s emulate the Senior team of last season and really shake up this town.

Page 10: Manly Warringah GIANTS Newsletter August 2014

The Division Two Sydney Women’s competition for 2014 was a highly diverse mix of experienced and new teams. Of the four teams that were new to the competition, we finished second in the list with the best percentage on for and against. Overall, we finished 8th in a field of 10.

We took 4 wins during the season – two against established and experienced teams and a review of our season’s statistics reveals a huge change in the

results between our first and second matches against any given team. In each re-match, the result was closer (twice going from a loss to a win) and the game harder fought. In every case the opposition was caught by surprise. Invariably, the opposition’s coach made a point of approaching us to comment on how far the team had come since the last encounter.

Our inaugural season was one to be proud of – it was tough and it was challenging but we had a better understanding of the game every week. Our skills improved in leaps and bounds. While in many of our games, we struggled to field 18 players, the players who got out there stepped up to the challenge. Despite our short numbers or perhaps because of it, this team has become a close-knit, upbeat group of women who never give up on the game or each other.

Being able to keeping your head up and continue to play a strong game is never more difficult than when the score difference is expanding before your eyes. I am very proud to say that the Manly Warringah Women’s team are, without exception, as determined, passionate and committed in the last quarter as they are in the first. For this reason, among many others, they are an absolute pleasure to play with.

As we are often short of players and helpers each week, we have had to call on the boys at some of our home games to run water for us. We are very grateful to the boys for both the support on the sidelines (we love the voices roaring from the stands) and, particularly, for the water running!

We were very excited to see that two of our midfielders – Jessica Joslyn and Mikaela Bate – were selected to try out for the ACT-NSW representative team. They are both amazingly talented players who have come from never having played to being a force to be reckoned with anywhere on the field. Also during the season, two of our players were nominated by Sydney AFL as Rising Stars – Ashleigh Carter and Holly Graham. Both are outstanding players who rate every week in best on ground, players’ player and coach’s awards, we were very excited to see them acknowledged by Sydney AFL.

Congratulations, girls, on a fantastic first season. You have laid the ground work and set the standard not only for yourselves to build on in 2015, but for the many other girls who will come to play in the maroon and white in the years to come. I hope you are as proud as I am to have been a part of this inaugural team.

Bring on 2015!
