ANNUAL REPORT 2006 MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED

Season 2006, our historic 60th year, represented another important step in the rebuilding of our great Club.

The NRL side, led by Captain Ben Kennedy, made the finals for the second year running, advancing through to the second round. Premier League and Jersey Flegg also qualified for the finals. With an ounce of luck running their way, both teams could have been in their respective grand finals.

This was the first time since 1997 that we have had all three grades in the finals. Together with the strong performances of the junior rep teams we are well placed for the future. Indicative of this is the fact that five Jersey Flegg players will be part of the full time NRL squad in 2007.

We were proud to have the following players gain selection for representative honours:

Brent Kite: Australia, NSW and CountryBen Kennedy: AustraliaSteve Menzies: Australia, NSWSteve Matai: New ZealandSteve Bell: QueenslandChris Hicks: CountryJason King: CityMatt Orford: Prime Minister’s XIII v PNG, CityBrett Stewart: Prime Minister’s XIII v PNG

Highlights of the season:

• Steve Menzies played his 300th First Grade game for the Club, scoring a try in the 29-22 win over Penrith.

• Attendance at home games increased to a record average of 15,794 with the crowd topping 20,000 for the last home game against the Bulldogs.

• The historic return to the SCG resulting in a one point win against old rivals Parramatta

• The 60 Year Dinner with the announcement of Manly’s 60 Year Team.

• Ben Kennedy’s inspirational leadership, resulting in him winning the Gordon Willoughby Medal for the second year in succession.

FOOTBALL CLUB MEMBERSHIP

When your Football Club Board met for the first time on the 10th of June 2004, our membership was 554 and by season end it had risen to 828. At the end of season 2005 membership stood at 1,764 and at the end of 2006 our membership was 2115.

During the course of the year the company acquired a further 75,000 ordinary shares in Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Limited. The Football Club’s total shareholding in the Sea Eagles is now 2,150,000 ordinary shares and 1 preference share, which represents 21.5% of the issued capital of the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Limited.

This is another great result, and I would like to thank Alan Webster, Membership Manager and Lauren Coltman, Commercial Operations Assistant for their efforts, together with the members of the volunteer committee who sold tickets in the 50/50 raffle on match days.

BROOkvALE OvAL

At our home game against Wests Tigers on Friday 9th of June, the Hon Tony Abbott MP was presented with the first Honorary Membership of the Football Club after he officially “switched on” the new lights for Brookvale Oval (see above). It was a great occasion, surpassed only by the miracle try scored by Brett Stewart off a Matt Orford kick in the dying seconds of the game for a 16-12 victory. The Board again expresses our appreciation to Tony Abbott for obtaining the funding for this much needed improvement to Brookvale Oval.

However, there is still much to be done towards the upgrading of Brookvale Oval. Our lack of corporate facilities makes it tough for us to remain viable in the current competition. A sub-committee comprising Sea Eagles Chairman Joe Cross, Leagues Club Chairman Paul Cummings and myself, is seeking the support of federal, state and local governments to obtain additional funding and we are hopeful of achieving a positive result in 2007.

COMMUNITY INvOLvEMENT

The NRL named Michael Monaghan the winner of the prestigious Ken Stephen Memorial Award for his outstanding work in the community for the 2006 season. Michael’s work at the Arranounbi School for special needs children was recognised by the judging panel as being inspirational. The whole team got right behind Michael and his work, deciding to make raising money to buy a new School Bus for the Arranounbi School the team’s project for the year. To date, close to $100,000 has been raised.

THANkS

I would like to thank Sea Eagles Chairman Joe Cross, CEO Grant Mayer and all our generous sponsors - particularly Max Delmege, the Penn family and the Manly-Warringah Leagues Club. Together with the Sea Eagles staff, they have assisted us tirelessly throughout the Season. I would also like to thank my fellow Board Members who have worked hard to continue increasing our membership and raise the profile of the Football Club.

Special thanks to Paul Cummings who filled in as CEO following the resignation of Pat Wilson. New CEO Grant Mayer took over with four rounds left in the season, after steering the French team Catalan Dragons in their inaugural season in the European Super League. Already, Grant has impressed all with his hands on approach to the job.

I would like to thank all of the Members for their support over the last three seasons. I stood down as Chairman at the October Board Meeting of the Football Club, confident the Club has successfully moved through the transition phase following the privatisation and is on secure footing for the future. Deputy Chairman Bob Reilly was elected Chairman, and I’m sure you will give him your full support.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members and their families a safe and happy Christmas and a bright and prosperous 2007 for the mighty Sea Eagles.

KERRY W. SIBRAA AOCHAIRMAN

APPRECIATION & THANkS

The Directors of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club Limited wish to convey their sincere thanks and appreciation to those Members who worked tirelessly, both for the Sea Eagles on game day and for the Football Club to support the Membership program.

ANNUAL REPORT 2006 MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED

What a tremendous season and fitting way to celebrate our 60th Year.

Having arrived at Manly from the shores of Perpignan in the south of France in early August, I was lucky enough to watch a number of high class performances from the team in their march to the finals.

The toughness and determination shown by every player in the Rnd 23 win against Newcastle at EnergyAustralia Stadium was a joy to watch. Add to this the exceptionally satisfying win against the boys from Belmore, and I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my time on the Peninsula.

Des Hasler has done a remarkable job with limited resources. I admire his determination and desire to make Manly great again. Congratulations Des and the entire coaching staff.

The club hierarchy should also be congratulated for the work they have done behind the scenes. Under the guidance of Sea Eagles Executive Chairman Paul Cummings and later Chairman Joe Cross, the Board have taken some very tough decisions over the past few years and we are now starting to see the benefits of these decisions. We are lucky to have leaders such as Joe and Paul involved with the Sea Eagles.

After years of unwavering and much appreciated support, Max Delmege was joined on the Sea Eagles Board by Penn Sport Directors, Rick and Scott Penn. As equal equity partners, both the Penn and Delmege families have shown that they are not only exceptionally talented business people, but the staunchest of Sea Eagles supporters. Thanks to both families for the financial support and guidance in 2006.

The other organisation I would like to acknowledge is Manly Leagues Club. Quite frankly, without their support in 2006 the Sea Eagles would not have been as competitive as we ended up being. Leagues Club Chairman, Paul Cummings, and General Manager, Peter Spray, have been fantastic to deal with since my arrival and I look forward to working closely with the Leagues Club in 2007.

CEO‘S REPORTIt would be remiss of me not to mention a number of people who have greatly contributed to the club’s off field success.

After the departure of the previous CEO Pat Wilson, Leagues Club Chairman Paul Cummings again stepped in to the fill the breach, taking on the role of acting CEO. The Sea Eagles have been exceptionally fortunate to have a man with so much experience to rely on when times get tough. Paul is maroon and white through and through and I would like to thank him on behalf of the board and all the staff for his support and guidance throughout the year.

Finally, let us all tip our hat to Kerry Sibraa. A greater gentleman you will never meet and bigger supporter you will be hard pressed to find. Kerry has done a wonderful job in his 3 years as Chairman of the Football Club. Although he has relinquished the Chairmanship, I am thrilled to know that he will remain an active member of the Football Club Board in to the future. Whilst he is no longer Chairman, his day to day role will only get bigger as we step up our campaign to redevelop Brookvale Oval. More on that throughout the year.

Incoming Chairman Bob Reilly has some big shoes to fill, but I am sure that he will do an outstanding job. Having worked closely with Bob for four months, you can rest assured that the future of the Football Club is secure under Bob’s direction.

In closing, I would like to thank all Sea Eagles staff for their dedication to the job. Many of the staff have worked through some tough times at the Club, but they, like me, cannot wait to see what the future brings on the Peninsula.

Proud History, Strong Future.

GRANT MAYERCHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2006

A five wins from eight matches start to the 2006 season was exactly the consistent start required to set up the Manly Sea Eagles’ best season since the heady days of 1997. An eventual 14 win, 10 loss record saw us finish the minor premiership equal third. Unfortunately, for and against differences saw us slip to fifth, narrowly missing out on a home semi final. Nevertheless, the season represented a pleasing improvement from our eighth placed finish in 2005.

I firmly believe that we played our grand final in the first week of the finals away at Newcastle. After leading for the major part of the game, we came up just short of recording our second win in the Newcastle cauldron in just a few short weeks. In retrospect it wasn’t surprising to see both Newcastle and Manly exit the finals the following week after such a titanic struggle in week one.

In a tremendous result for the entire Club, Manly qualified for the finals in all three grades for the first time since 1997 and all players appreciated the way the fans responded by getting to Brookvale Oval in numbers.

On and off the field the Sea Eagles showed great team spirit and professionalism. Ben Kennedy’s first and only season as captain in his illustrious career was outstanding. He led from the front and was dynamic in his approach to every game. He leaves an amazing legacy for the younger players in the club to work with. At every training session

COACHING REPORTand every minute of every game he was giving his all. I wasn’t surprised when he was named amongst the club greats after just two seasons with the club.

Looking forward to 2007, Manly now have a good cross section of players who have played 50 NRL games and that is a solid base on which to build a highly successful season.

The introduction of world class back Jamie Lyon to the Sea Eagles will ensure an already potent backline will excite in 2007. Lyon comes back to the NRL as one of the stars of the English Super League and his style of play is sure to make him a real crowd favourite at Brookvale Oval.

In 2006, much of Manly’s success came from the consistency of the side and this can be put down to the outstanding work done by the medical, rehabilitation and physiotherapy staff. As a result of their professionalism and skill, Manly used only 26 players in the NRL all season – significantly less than most other clubs. Chris Hicks, Michael Monaghan and Matt Orford played all 26 games while five other players missed just one game.

Our new buys Matt Orford and Steve Bell both added class and skill to their new club and were outstanding citizens off the field.

Orford will be better for his season with his new team mates while Bell scored 13 tries in 17 games, his tally no doubt cut short after being injured in his second State of Origin appearance for Qld - ironically in a tackle by Manly team mate Steve Menzies.

Front rower Brent Kite was rewarded for a great season with his first Australian Test jersey and he stamped himself as one of the best props in the game with his performances in the Tri Nations. Steve Matai’s rise from obscurity to the New Zealand Test side was a reward for hard work, consistency and enthusiasm. Steve Matai will be a strong performer for Manly for many years to come.

Steve “Beaver” Menzies started his first grade career in 1993 and is still going strong. To represent Australia 14 seasons after debuting is something that rarely happens in the game. There was never any doubt he would be chosen as one of the backrowers in the Club’s 60 Year Team. Steve Menzies will again be an important part of the Sea Eagles challenge in the upcoming season.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the shareholders – the Delmege and Penn families, the Football Club and its Members, the Board and administration staff for their continued support and enthusiasm.

And I would like to thank the entire football staff for their loyalty and professional attitude in a very long season. Rugby League is a team game – on and off the field Manly is well represented in both areas.

DES HASLERHEAD COACH

In August, the Manly Sea Eagles celebrated 60 Years with the naming of Manly’s Greatest Ever Team at a gala event at Manly Leagues Club attended by Manly legends from all eras.

The 60 Year Team, chosen by Co-Patron, Ken Arthurson, Football Club Chairman, Kerry Sibraa, and respected Rugby League journalists Ian Heads and Phil Rothfield contained two current players, Steve Menzies and Ben Kennedy.

The selection of former Harbord Devil, Steve Menzies, would have brought a smile to the face of his late grandpop, Mackie Campbell, a member of Manly’s first side in 1947. An emotional Ben Kennedy took his place in the side after just two seasons with the club. Kennedy described his selection as one of the most memorable moments of his superb career.

It was a salute to the evening that every living member of the side attended the announcement, along with the widows of the deceased team members.

“It was wonderful to see the Leagues Club auditorium jam packed with Manly people covering all eras - from our first captain Max Whitehead to our current captain Ben Kennedy”, said Ken Arthurson. “For me, it was evident that the amazing spirit and tradition of the club laid by the pioneers of 1947 and carried on so well over many decades, is alive and well”, Mr.Arthurson said.

ANNUAL REPORT 2006 MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED

COACHING AND DEvELOPMENT REPORTHAROLD MATTHEWS

The Manly Sea Eagles Harold Matthews team celebrated one of its best seasons in recent years. This team boasted some exciting talent and all looks well for the future for the Sea Eagles. The team reached the final four only to be eliminated by eventual Premiers, Penrith.

Congratulations to coach Tim Lees and his support staff for maintaining a professional and well prepared attitude to the coaching and training of this team. One of the highlights of this team’s success was the exciting extra time win over the Parramatta Eels in the quarter final.

Congratulations to half back Malcolm Parry, who gained selection in the U15 NSW Combined High Schools team. Malcolm is a very talented and gifted player who will play Harold Matthews again next season. All Sea Eagles fans should keep a close eye on this special player.

SG BALL

The Manly SG Ball side unfortunately did not qualify for the play offs. This team seemed cursed with injuries as they were forced to bring more and more players into the squad. When the top side was on deck, they proved to be an impressive outfit, as evidenced by their emphatic win over the previously undefeated Bulldogs.

Coach Dave Penna and his support staff are to be congratulated for keeping a positive approach to this team and always provided the right advice and expertise in coaching the boys. One positive from the season is that eight players from the 2006 team will be eligible to play in the SG Ball in 2007.

Congratulations to Daniel Harrison who gained selection in the NSW U18 team that toured New Zealand at the end of the

season. Congratulations also to prop forward and Narrabeen junior, Ilija Radan, who was selected in the NSW U17 team that played Queensland at Suncorp Stadium before Origin II. Recently, Ilija was selected into the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport ) team that toured England and France during November.

DEvELOPMENT SqUADS

This year we assembled Development Squads from the Manly Warringah Junior League.

The squads comprised of under 13,14,15 and 17s . The under 17 squad trained regularly from February to July and competed in matches against other district clubs. This was a highly successful program and I must thank whole heartedly Coach Rob Nicholson and his assistants , Chris White, Glenn Moore and Nathan Gamage .

The three junior squads also participated in matches and training sessions with the emphasis on core skill basics. There is a huge amount of talented young players on the Northern Beaches and I must also thank the commitment and dedication of our coaches who gave up their time to coach the kids. A special thank you to Les Elliott and Kim Hunter for the co-ordination and management of all the development squads .

SCHOOLS DEvELOPMENT

Once again, a special thanks to our ARL Development Officer, Melissa Vayro for the wonderful work she is doing throughout the Northern Beaches Primary Schools and Junior League. Over 300 children attended a Kids To Kangaroos clinic at Brookvale Oval, the largest attendance for any Kids To Kangaroos clinic. Melissa also co-ordinated a very successful all schools carnival at Nolans Reserve.

A huge thank you, also, to ARL Secondary Schools Development Officer, Ashley Mathieson. Ashley is well known on the Northern Beaches and his efforts in getting virtually all secondary schools throughout the area to participate in rugby league are immeasurable. Ashley always assists me in anyway he can and I sincerely thank him for that.

During the year, Ashley and Melissa conducted a Referees course for students and a Coaching course for Teachers. A Modified Games Coaching and League Safe Course was also conducted during the year with a total of 80 persons attending.

I wish to thank all of our support staff and volunteers for their continued enthusiasm and dedication to work in the development of young players and coaches.

We have raised the bar of professionalism in training and coaching for the players as we strive to be the leaders in young player development.

Finally, I must thank Head Coach, Des Hasler, his assistant Dennis Moore and the senior coaching staff of the Sea Eagles for their continued support and the expertise they bring to the Manly Sea Eagles Development Program.

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2006

I am pleased to report that in 2006 we had a very substantial increase in numbers and the season was an outstanding success. Over the past 4 years we have increased the number of registered players from 1854 to 2109.

The most pleasing aspect of 2006 centered around our development program as we worked closely with the Sea Eagles Development personnel. A significant number of local juniors represented our district in the Harold Matthews, SG Ball and, Jersey Flegg competitions. All of these teams achieved excellent results, with the Harold Matthews and Jersey Flegg teams playing Semi Finals.

It is with a great deal of pleasure that I note that Football Club Chairman, Bob Reilly, has advised me that the number of local juniors in each of the representative squads for 2007 is likely to approach 80%.

In 2006 we again invited the North Sydney teams to participate in our competition. Whilst this always presents operational challenges, it again proved to be a step in the right direction in terms of ensuring good quality, viable competition in the age groups 16 years to Open “A” Grade.

Interest in our local junior rugby league is very strong with over 6000 people attending our grand final weekend. History was created on grand Final day when Valley United executed a clean sweep of premiership wins in under 19 years, “A”2 and “A”1 Open grades. In the under 17 years very strong joint competition with North Sydney, North Curl Curl defeated Berowra.

jUNIOR LEAGUE REPORTOur dedication to developing emerging talent has been extremely successful as our local under 13 years, 14 years and 15 years development squads of 20 players achieved very good results when competing in invitation challenges against other districts.

In the age brackets under 7 years to under 14 years inclusive every player who qualified for the semi finals and finals received a skills development certificate in recognition of their achievement. This program was very much appreciated by both players and parents.

I am pleased to report to Members that our district recorded the lowest number of judiciary appearances during the season. Our tally of 23 judiciary appearances (including sideline code of conduct incidents) compared very favourably with other districts who recorded 120 or more judiciary appearances. In our area we had no repeat offenders. This achievement reflects on the outstanding dedication of our volunteers on game days to eliminate unruly sideline behaviour.

Unfortunately, the SHOROC committee of councils has recommended for 2007 that a user pay cost recovery system apply for use of grounds in the Manly Warringah Pittwater area. For rugby league in 2007 it is estimated that a fee of $40,000 would apply. I was elected by all sports to be chairman of the committee to oppose this move. The debate will be long.

The strength of our operation centres around our volunteers at club level, in particular the Ground Managers who monitor our risk management program as detailed in the competition rules. To them we owe a great debt of appreciation.

Finally I would like to record our appreciation to Manly Leagues Club for the continued financial support in covering insurance costs and referees’ fees and the support that we receive from all the Directors of the Football Club.

PREMIER LEAGUE MANAGER’S REPORTUnder the astute guidance of Coach Geoff Toovey and his assistant, Paul Beger, 2006 can be classed as the year that could have been for the Manly Sea Eagles Premier League team. In the Semi Final against eventual Premiers, Parramatta, the team fought back from 16-4 down to 16-all with 2 minutes to play, only to have our dreams ended by a 60 metre intercept try.

All players contributed to the success of the team with their effort and enthusiasm and it was a pleasure to manage such a great bunch of young men. Matt Ballin had an outstanding year, playing every match and winning the awards double of Best and Fairest and Players’ Player. Along with Michael Witt, he was selected in the NSW Residents side to play Queensland.

Congratulations to Geoff Toovey and Paul Beger on a job well done. It has been a pleasure working with Tooves these last three years and I wish him well with his promotion to NRL First Grade Assistant Coach. Thank you, also, to veteran trainers and strappers, Peter Murphy, Norm Smith and Mike Smith who look after the players so well.

Finally, a very personal thank you to Anthony Collela and Laurie Bailey who stepped into my role as Manager when I was incapacitated for 2 months. Both men continued to assist me after my return and their help and support was much appreciated.

MANAGER’S REPORT

2006 saw the Manly Sea Eagles Jersey Flegg team make the finals series for the first time since 2001. Despite being one of the smallest teams in the Flegg competition, what they lacked in size they countered with their skill, guts and never say die attitude.

The season looked just about over with 2 wins, 6 losses and a draw from the first 9 games. However, after the bye in round 10, the team came back refreshed and with new found confidence, went on to records wins against the Bears, Central Coast Rip, Magpies, Sharks, Souths (twice), eventual premiers Penrith (twice), Roosters, Bulldogs and Minor Premiers, Newcastle. This good form saw them finish seventh and into the finals.

In Week 1, they took on the second placed Roosters. It was a very even contest and with the scores locked at 14-all at fulltime, the game went into Golden Point. A 40-20 kick from Manly led to the winning try from the scrum and the side progressed to face the Dragons in week 2.

Manly’s tough game the previous week saw them start slowly against the Dragons, down 14-0 midway through the first half. Two tries brought the score back to 14-10 at half time. After the break, Manly came out firing and led 20 – 14 until the Dragons scored to level up with 2 minutes to go. Manly were awarded a late penalty 30 metres out and to the side of the posts. Unfortunately, the attempt at goal went wide and the game went to Golden Point, with the Dragons eventually winning with a try in the corner in the second period of extra time.

The following players earned a call up to Premier League during the season – Andrew Everingham, Jon Grieve, Aaron Groom, John O’Sullivan, Mark Offerdahl, Rodney Peake and Chris Trembath.

The Jersey Flegg team played well above expectations and can be pleased with their effort and commitment during the season.
