FOOTBALL CLUB DIRECTORS 2014

It is with pleasure that I present this Annual Report 2014 to Football Club Members.

2014 saw our great Club end the regular season in equal first place on the ladder and reach our 10th successive finals series, confirming the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles as the most successful team of the decade.

Although a loss, the comeback effort against the Canterbury-Bulldogs in the semi-final was nothing short of courageous, especially given the toll of disruption, injuries and suspensions.

Geoff Toovey, his coaching staff, recruitment team and of course the players are to be congratulated on another great season.

Under often trying circumstances they showed the same determination and winning culture that has been the trademark of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, and all members should be incredibly proud of our team and their achievements.

The salary cap that plays a key part in our game has unfortunately meant it is difficult for successful clubs to retain all their players. It is disappointing that the NRL does not adequately reward clubs like Manly who have managed to retain a group of loyal and long-serving players. This year the Sea Eagles had no less than seven players who have played first grade continuously with the Club for eight years or more, yet receive the same financial bonus as a club with just one.

It is therefore with great sadness that we farewell a number of our players who have played a key part of the team’s ongoing success.

Former co-captain and life member Jason King has retired as a one-Club player, and dual-premiership winning players Glenn Stewart and life member Anthony Watmough are leaving the club. We thank them for their many years of service to our club and wish them well for the future.

On a more positive note several other existing players have been re-signed, including club captain Jamie Lyon who will play out his career at Brookvale Oval. Along with the new signings for 2015, we wish the team all the best for the 2015 Season.

Off the pitch we have seen a number of changes. We welcome incoming CEO, Joe Kelly and wish him well in the new role. We also recognise and thank former General Manager David Perry for his efforts and the results he achieved whilst with the club.

We have a very committed and passionate group of people at the Sea Eagles that support our team from the back office, and the role they play in the Club’s success should also be recognised.

There has of course been a change to the ownership structure and the Football Club is committed to working with the Penn family as they develop and implement their plans for the future, including their commitment to Brookvale Oval. We are indebted to Co-Patron Kerry Sibraa AO for his ongoing work in this area.

We welcome former Sea Eagles player and long-standing NRL Judiciary member, Mal Cochrane who joined our board this year following the resignation of Rory Muscat, and we thank Rory for his contribution.

I would like to thank my fellow board members for their efforts during the year. We are all volunteers who give freely of our time whilst balancing the usual commitments and pressures of work and family life.

We are proud to have been selected to represent you and remain committed to protect and preserve the heritage of our great club and give members a voice at the board level of the Sea Eagles.

It is pleasing that our membership numbers have again risen this year and I’d like to thank all members for the continued support.

I wish all Football Club Members and their families a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORTIt is my privilege to write my first CEO report to the Members of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club Limited.

As I have only commenced at this great Club on Monday 24th November 2014, it is not appropriate for me to provide commentary with respect to the 2014 season, other than to say that the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles performance was very strong once again, finishing one win away from the Minor Premiership. Consistency across the entire season is difficult to achieve in this very tough competition, therefore, all the players and coaching staff deserve congratulations for this tremendous effort.

Looking forward, I see an incredibly bright future for the Club. Within my remit as CEO, I am charged with facilitating success, and I will be ensuring that our staff and players receive the necessary resource support, and where required, I will be adding further experience and capability to the organisation, to compliment the wonderful staff that are already employed within the Club.

I have previously worked in Clubs that have adopted private ownership models, both in Sydney and internationally. In this day and age, capital investment is necessary to remain competitive, and even more so, to get ahead of the opposition. I have seen this model work wonderfully well, whilst still retaining the core values, traditions and heritage elements, which after all are fundamental to the Club’s purpose in the first place. As the CEO, I will ensure that we will never lose sight of what has made this Club great. We should embrace the opportunities that will now present themselves as a consequence of the corporate structure changes that have occurred recently.

To ultimately be successful, we need the entire collective of Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Members and Supporters behind us. Internally we can set strategy, build infrastructure and resources, and develop a professional service orientated Club, but we need everyone who supports this Club to commit to the journey ahead in order to turn the Sea Eagles in to a world class sporting organisation. Your commitment and unwavering support is the lifeblood of the Club.

I look forward to meeting you all during the 2015 season.

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2014

NRL TEAM SEASON 2014

COACH’S MESSAGEThe 2014 season was an extremely successful campaign for the team, finishing equal first on points with the Roosters but unfortunately missing out on our first Minor Premiership since 1997 on For and Against.

After the finals loss to Canterbury in extra time by a solitary point, the team was naturally devastated. However, they should be very proud of their performances throughout the 2014 campaign with an exceptional home record of 11 wins from 12 matches. But yes, that sole loss was also unfortunately in extra time by a point.

Last year was also was the last season in maroon and white colours for several senior players at the club. A local Belrose junior, Jason King retired from the game a Life Member of the M.W.R.L.F.C having played 239 games. Anthony Watmough, a Narrabeen junior and a Life Member of the club like Jason, has left to join Parramatta and finally 2011 Clive Churchill Medallist Glenn Stewart has departed for South Sydney after 185 games at Manly. All three have been an integral part of the team’s success over the past decade and we wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

The 2014 football awards were as follows:

• Brenton Lawrence Best & Fairest• Kieran Foran Players Player• Jesse Sene-Lefao Rookie of the Year

Away from football the players continued to build their reputation in the community through spending more than 450 hours participating in community activities at a local and state level. Some of these included indigenous and diabetes camps, NRL’s community carnival, the local Sea Eagles Breakfast Club and Sea Eagles Reads initiatives, with Clubman of the year Brenton Lawrence also nominated for the NRL’s annual Ken Stephen’s award.

I have no doubt that 2015 will be another great season for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and would like to thank all members, officials, players and supporters for their contribution in 2014 .

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2014

MWFOOTBALL CLUB

Est. 1947

MANLY-WARRINGAH DISTRICT JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUEThis year the Manly-Warringah District Junior Rugby League registered 2,500 players with 165 teams playing football across various age groups ranging from Under 6’s up to A Grade.

It was encouraging to see growth in the junior registration numbers with many Clubs fielding two sides in the Under 6’s to Under 10’s divisions. In fact, Narrabeen JRLFC entered four teams in the Under 6’s which is a first for many years.

Our season ended with twenty two grand finals across three venues including Lionel Watts Oval, Lake Park and thirteen first division deciders at Brookvale Oval.

This year’s grand finals were washed out when Council closed the grounds due to bad weather. The Junior League Board postponed them for two weeks taking the view that most players would forget about the delay but they will always remember playing at Brookvale Oval.

Looking at the season results, it was pleasing to see that every Club had teams in the semi-finals and nearly all Clubs had at least one team playing in the Grand Finals which suggests that the football talent is evenly spread throughout the junior league.

I watched every Grand Final played at Lionel Watts and Brookvale Oval over three days and was continually impressed with the high standard of rugby league played across all age groups. There are many future sea eagle stars running around in the junior league aspiring to pull on a maroon and white jersey.

It is appropriate to congratulate all teams that reached the Semi Finals and Grand Finals but more importantly, all of our registered players who strapped on the boots and had a go - win, lose or draw. The benefits of playing in a team sport like rugby league are significant and you make friends for life whilst having fun along the way.

The task of running the junior league can be challenging but we only succeed because of the huge contribution made by our large band of volunteers who give up their own precious time to help promote football. These people set up the fields, run the canteen, cook the barbecue, clean up the grounds, coach, manage and supervise the various teams and I thank them for their assistance.

I would also like to thank the Referees for their contribution to junior rugby league which at times can be demanding as everyone seems to be an expert on the sideline. I am always amazed when a spectator can see a forward pass from fifty metres away when the referee was in line with the players and “deliberately” missed it. I would like to encourage anyone who thinks they can do better to get your referees ticket and get involved.

It is also important to highlight the financial assistance provided by the Manly-Warringah Leagues Club and the support of the Manly-Warringah District Football Club and the Manly Sea Eagles. The Junior League is in the fortunate position to receive assistance, scholarship and support from these organisations if required and we are proud to be associated with them.

Hope to see you in 2015 – Go Manly

BROOKVALE OVAL COMMITTEEBrookvale Oval continued to be the fortress for the Sea Eagles in season 2014, with the team winning every game there except the one heartbreaking, extra time field goal loss to the Storm in round one.

However inclement weather coinciding with what should have been high drawing home games, such as the Bulldogs, once more demonstrated why Brookvale Oval so desperately needs more undercover seating and upgraded facilities. Efforts to secure an upgrade of Brookvale Oval, continued during 2014. Picking up from where we left off last year, Premier Mike Baird MP chaired a series of roundtables in the first half of the year aimed at ensuring all ideas and possible funding solutions were on the table with the key stakeholders present. This included the Sea Eagles, NRL, Prime Minister’s office, Warringah Council and St Augustine’s College.

Early in the year it was agreed that a feasibility and scoping study would be undertaken, jointly funded by the NRL and Sea Eagles. The study was to further develop fully costed upgrade options and ensure all plans were aligned with the principles of the NSW Government Stadia Strategy. It would also explore the feasibility of an integrated high performance and community facility, along with the opportunity for the inclusion of other sports.

Project management consultancy, Aver were subsequently contracted to conduct the study, which is ongoing. As part of Aver’s work and in addition to the existing stakeholders they met with the Central Coast Mariners, Football Federation Australia, Baseball NSW, the Australian Rugby Union, Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust, Stadium Australia and Venues NSW. In parallel, Sea Eagles management and Brookvale Oval Committee members met with the NRL Commission, including CEO Dave Smith, and NSW Sports Ministers Gabrielle Upton MP and Stuart Ayres MP.

The focus of the work to date has been around identifying other national or regional sporting bodies who would be prepared to utilise Brookvale Oval; developing an efficient and sustainable venue management and ownership model that would lead to more forward planning, investment and better utilisation of the ground; identify sources of additional funding to meet the current funding shortfall, and finally have Brookvale Oval recognised as a Tier 2 Stadium and therefore prioritised for State Government capital investment.

Although it’s a slow process, the rigour and thoroughness of the feasibility work is paying dividends. Already we have the North Harbour Rays in the National Rugby championship playing matches at Brookvale, with the strong possibility of the Central Coast Mariners also playing scheduled A-league matches there in the future.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Premier Mike Baird for the work he has done to bring all the parties together and progress discussions thus far. I also want to place on record my thanks to all the Brookvale Oval Committee Members for their contribution and for giving up their time to this worthy cause.

Since then CEO Frank Stanton and I began lobbying the NSW Government for funding in 1998, I have been involved in raising $24 million from Federal, State and local Government with the possibility of a further $10 million in the pipeline.

With local members of Parliament, the Prime Minister (Number 1 ticket holder) and the Premier of NSW committed to securing the long term future of the Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval, there is little more I can do at the political level.

Sea Eagles private owners, the Penn Group, have also recently indicated they are looking at exciting new plans for the ground which I welcome.Whilst it has at times been a frustrating process, with the work that is ongoing and the strong foundations already laid I am confident the future for Brookvale Oval is bright.
