So one night, he stood behind her while she was sitting in her lounge chair. He spoke softly to her, "Honey, can you hear me?" There was no response. He moved a little closer and said again, "Honey, can you hear me?" Still, there was no response. Finally he moved right behind her and said, "Honey, can you hear me?" She replied, "For the third time, Yes!" in the car. The drive home was difficult. It was even harder to enter the empty house. She carried Jimmy’s belongings, and the plastic bag with the lock of his hair to her son’s room. She started placing the model cars and other personal things back in his room exactly where he had always kept them. She laid down across his bed and, hugging his pillow, cried herself to sleep. It was around midnight when Sally awoke. Laying beside her on the bed was a folded letter. The letter said: “Dear Mom, I know you’re going to miss me; but don’t think that I will ever forget you, or stop loving you, just ’cause I’m not around to say I LOVE YOU. I will always love you, Mom, even more with each day. Someday we will see each other again. Until then, if you want to adopt a little boy so you won’t be so lonely, that’s okay with me. He can have my room and old stuff to play with. But, if you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn’t like the same things us boys do. You’ll have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like, you know. Don’t be sad thinking about me. This really is a neat place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything. The angels are so cool. I love to watch them fly. And, you know what? Jesus doesn’t look like any of his pictures. Yet, when I saw Him, I knew it was Him. Jesus him- self took me to see GOD! And guess what, Mom? I got to sit on God’s knee and talk to Him, like I was somebody important. That’s when I told Him that I wanted to write you a letter, to tell you good-bye and everything. But I already knew that wasn’t allowed. Well, you know what Mom? God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this letter. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel who is going to drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you asked Him ‘Where was He when I needed him?’ “God said He was in the same place with me, as when His son Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as He always is with all His children. Oh, by the way, Mom, no one else can see what I’ve written except you. To everyone else this is just a blank piece of paper. Isn’t that cool? I have to give God His pen back now. He needs it to write some more names in the Book of Life. Tonight I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper. I’m, sure the food will be great. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I don’t hurt anymore. The cancer is all gone. First Sunday in Lent (Page 163 BCP) Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the spirit into the wilderness and was tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson (Old Testament): Deuteronomy 26: (1-4) 5-11

In this reading from the Old Testament the Lord’s Mighty salvation of Israel from

slavery in Egypt is recalled, and the people are bid to offer in thanksgiving, the first

fruits of their fields.

Psalm: 91

A hymn of trust in the Lord. The Lord will guard and deliver the one who loves and

seeks refuge with God.

Second Lesson (Epistle): Romans 10: (5-8a) 8b-13 In this lesson Paul teaches that the word of faith is a gift to us; by it we make our saving

confession that Jesus is Lord and that God raised him from the dead.

The Gospel: Luke 4:1-13 Our Gospel is the story of the temptations of Jesus by the devil. After his baptism Jesus

is led into the wilderness and confronted with the temptations which are inescapable in

his ministry. He might seek to show that he is Son of God by satisfying material needs, or

he could control lives by ruling with worldly pomp and authority. Or, in what might be

seen as the greatest temptation, he could direct allegiance through miraculous power.

I am looking for persons to form an Altar Guild, with specific reference to looking after the linens and items used at the altar. In previous years persons were allocated a month to help with the washing of the linens. Many of these persons have died and the burden now falls on a few persons. If you are interested in this particular ministry, kindly give your name to the Rector, or indicate your willingness to help in this important area. This will be followed by a meeting to put these efforts and ideas in place.

The Little Boy

Sally jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating room. She said: “How is my little boy? Is he going to be all right? When can I see him?” The surgeon said, “I’m sorry. We did all we could, but your boy didn’t make it.” Sally said, “Why do little children get cancer? Doesn’t God care any more? Where were you, God, when my son needed you?” The surgeon asked, “Would you like some time alone with your son? One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes, before he’s transported to the university.” Sally asked the nurse to stay with her while she said good-bye to son. She ran her fingers lovingly through his thick red curly hair. “Would you like a lock of his hair?” the nurse asked. Sally nodded yes. The nurse cut a lock of the boy’s hair, put it in a plastic bag and handed it to Sally. The mother said, “It was Jimmy’s idea to donate his body to the university for study. He said it might help somebody else. “I said no at first, but Jimmy said, ‘Mom, I won’t be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some other little boy spend one more day with his Mom.” She went on, “My Jimmy had a heart of gold. Always thinking of some-one else. Always wanting to help others if he could.” Sally walked out of Children’s mercy Hospital for the last time, after spending most of the last six months there. She put the bag with Jimmy’s belongings on the seat beside her

Instead Jesus three times confesses his obedience to the will of God.

First Lesson (Old Testament): Deuteronomy 26: (1-4) 5-11

Moses said, ["When you come into the land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, and have taken possession of it, and live in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the LORD your God gives you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place which the LORD your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, `I declare this day to the LORD your God that I have come into the land which the LORD swore to our fathers to give us.' Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand, and set it down before the altar of the LORD your God.] "And you shall make response before the LORD your God, `A wandering Aramean was my father; and he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. And the Egyptians treated us harshly, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage. Then we cried to the LORD the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice, and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror, with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which thou, O LORD, hast given me.' And you shall set it down before the LORD your God, and worship before the LORD your God; and you shall rejoice in all the good which the LORD your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you.

Psalm: 99 (as found in Hymns Ancient & Modern)

1. WHOSO dwelleth under the defence of the most High : shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.. 2. I will say unto the Lord, Thou art my hope, and my strong hold : my God, in him will I trust. 3. For he shall deliver thee from the snare of the hunter : and from the noisome pestilence. 4. He shall defend thee under his wings, and thou shalt be safe under his feathers : his faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5. Thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night : nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6. For the pestilence that walketh in darkness : nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day. 7. A thousand shall fall beside thee, and ten thousand at thy right hand : but it shall not come nigh thee. 8. Yea, with thine eyes shalt thou behold : and see the reward of the ungodly. 9. For thou, Lord, art my hope : thou hast set thine house of defence very high. 10. There shall no evil happen unto thee : neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11. For he shall give his angels charge over thee : to keep thee in all thy ways. 12. They shall bear thee in their hands : that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone. 13. Thou shalt go upon the lion and adder : the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread under thy feet. 14. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him : I will set him up, because he hath known my Name. 15. He shall call upon me, and I will hear him : yea, I am with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and bring him to honour. 16. With long life will I satisfy him : and shew him my salvation.

Bidding Prayer

Let us pray for the saving power of God in the Church and in the world.

Keep the Church vigilant against all temptations and make her perfect in the service and worship of God…Filled with the Holy Spirit, may all Christian people keep this Lenten time with penitence and amendment of life.

Cleanse the world from the temptations of greed, of power and of pride…Guide those in positions of authority to know their weakness and be compassionate to the needs of others.

Bless us at this time with grace to make and to keep a good rule of life, during this Lent and beyond…Be ever close to us, to our families, friends and neighbours, to shield us from temptation and lead us in the right way.

Have mercy on all who are greatly tempted to harm themselves or others…Free them from the power of evil and bring them out of the wilderness into the good land of faith.

We give thanks for the departed who have passed through the temptations of this world and come safely to their rest…May they rejoice in the company of the saints and of all the angelic host.

May our prayers be accepted through Christ, our guardian against temptation. Amen.

Second Lesson (Epistle): Romans 10: (5-8a) 8b-13

[Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on the law shall live by it. But the righteousness based on faith says, Do not say in your heart, "Who will ascend into heaven?" (that is, to bring Christ down) or "Who will descend into the abyss?" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say?] The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved. The scripture says, "No one who believes in him will be put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and bestows his riches upon all who call upon him. For, "every one who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved."

The Gospel: Luke 4:1-13

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit for forty days in the wilderness, tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." And Jesus answered him, "It is written, `Man shall not live by bread alone.'" And the devil took him up, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, "To you I will give all this authority and their glory; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it shall all be yours." And Jesus answered him, "It is written, `You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.'" And he took him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; for it is written, `He will give his angels charge of you, to guard you,' and `On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'" And Jesus answered him, "It is said, `You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'" And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
