Advent 2

The Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent Candle

Leader: As the light comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of man.

Leader lights the first two candles in silence.

Leader: Our Lord says “Surely I come quickly.”

Response: Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

Response: It is right to give God thanks and praise. Merciful God, give us grace to heed the warnings of the prophets and forsake our sins, so that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer.” The Way of the Lord is being prepared in our hearts. May every valley be filled and every mountain and hill be made low. May the crooked paths be made straight and the rough ways smooth. When our Lord comes, may all of us then see the salvation of God.

Leader: We bless you, Eternal Father, giver of all good things, for Jesus has come, hum-ble and dependent, the babe in the manger. He will come again, glorious and resplendent for all humanity to see. Grant us in our daily living so to know him, that on the day, we may rejoice to see Him, Christ our King.

Response: Amen

THE COLLECT - 2nd Sunday of Advent (Page 157 BCP) Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: The Old Testament reading is a message of comfort

and new hope to God’s people.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Melissa Stevenson 9:15a.m. - Peter Bowen

FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): Isaiah 40:1-11

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and

Page 3: The new fisherman december 7th, 2014

the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." A voice says, "Cry!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people is grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, "Behold your God!" Behold, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms, he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.

REFLECTION THE PSALM: The psalm both celebrates and prays for the Lord’s

gracious favour, God’s forgiveness, deliverance and justice.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 85 (7:30a.m. - Page 579 BCP)

1. LORD, thou art become gracious unto thy land : thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob. 2. Thou hast forgiven the offence of thy people : and covered all their sins. 3. Thou hast taken away all thy displeasure : and turned thyself from thy wrathful indignation. 4. Turn us then, O God our Saviour : and let thine anger cease from us. 5. Wilt thou be displeased at us for ever : and wilt thou stretch out thy wrath from one generation to another? 6. Wilt thou not turn again, and quicken us : that thy people may rejoice in thee? 7. Shew us thy mercy, O Lord : and grant us thy salvation. 8. I will hearken what the Lord God will say concerning me : for he shall speak peace unto his people, and to his saints, that they turn not again. 9. For his salvation is nigh them that fear him : that glory may dwell in our land. 10. Mercy and truth are met together : righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11. Truth shall flourish out of the earth : and righteousness hath looked down from heaven. 12. Yea, the Lord shall shew loving-kindness : and our land shall give her increase. 13. Righteousness shall go before him : and he shall direct his going in the way.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: This lesson is a reminder that the divine

perspective on time can be very different from that of human beings.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Vincent Broomes 9:15a.m. - Men’s Fellowship

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: 2 Peter 3:8-15a, 18

Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise as some count slowness, but is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and the works that are upon it will be burned up. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be kindled and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire! But according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you wait for these, be zealous to be found by him without spot

or blemish, and at peace. And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

GRADUAL HYMN - 40

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: The Gospel of mark begins with the ministry of John

the Baptist. He is the messenger spoken of in the scriptures, the voice which cries aloud

in the wilderness. He is sent to prepare the way of the Lord through his call for repen-

tance and baptism in water for the forgiveness of sins. The people flock to him, but he

tells them of a mightier one still to come who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Mark 1:1-8

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, "Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight —" John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

Bidding Prayer

In the confidence of the gospel, let us pray to the Lord.

Let the Church give thanks and praise for the good news of salvation, and receive the power to proclaim it to the world…May all Christian people prepare in humility and love to celebrate the coming of Christ.

Grant to the whole world the knowledge of the divine mercy revealed in Jesus Christ, that all people may come through repentance to new life…Make straight the crooked ways of the world and give light to the dark places.

Give us grace to be messengers of the good news to those whose lives come near to our own…Send the healing power of the Holy Spirit to guide all in our community into the way of peace.

Have mercy on all who are held in the power of unrepented sin, and lead them back into the right way…Strengthen those who suffer indifference and hostility as they preach the word of God.

We give thanks for those who in this world received the word of salvation, showed its power in their lives and are now at rest…Keep us faithful in the way where they have gone before, until we come to the Kingdom.

May our prayers be accepted through Christ by whom we are baptized in the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

The Launch of the Flower and Garden Festival

The Flower and Garden Festival 2015 will be launched on Sunday 14 December, under the theme “Nature’s Bounty”. Also on that Sunday which is called “Rose Sunday”, there will be presentations on Breast Cancer.

A retiring collection will be taken at both services and donations will be made to Barbados Cancer Society and Cancer Support Services.

Persons are asked to wear something pink in solidarity with Breast Cancer and the Liturgical Sunday. The Church will be decorated in pink. It’s our way of blending the liturgical setting and colours with the community around us.

Condolences

We convey condolences to Mrs. Vashti Springer and family, and Mrs. Elmina Jordan and family at the death of husband and brother, Jasper Springer.

Persons needing envelopes for 2015 are asked to give their names to the Rector. Thanks to all members who have adjusted to the monthly envelope system. This continues to be working well, as we have been able to reduce the cost of the envelopes and also the wast-age. The persons responsible for the counting of money on Sundays are finding the job much easier.

We are in the process of assembling a tent to house the playground for the Day Care Centre. The tent has been donated by Mrs. Regine Sixt and her Charity “Drying Little Tears” will provide the equipment for the area.

Day of Prayer for Peace

Wednesday 17 December is a day of Prayer and Peace and our Church will be open to allow persons the opportunity to make it a meaningful exercise.

Ordination

Mr. Reginald Knight will be ordained as a Deacon on Monday 15 December at St. Mary’s Church.

Pink Sunday

The Third Sunday in Advent is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the lighting of the Rose Candle in the Advent Wreath. This year it is our intention to focus on the subject of Breast Cancer, which is a challenge for many women in our society and Church. It is hoped that we will use ‘Pink’ as the liturgical colour for the day; with the Mothers’ Union donating a pink chasuble to be worn by the Clergy on the day. Two pink stoles, matching Burse and Chalice Veil will be much appreciated. With members wearing pink to show solidarity and prayerful support of sufferers. This gives a wonderful opportunity to bring our liturgy in line with this important aspect of human life. I am asking for your support in making this a meaningful celebration.

Casual Sunday

The Sunday before Christmas, the Fourth Sunday of Advent will be celebrated as casual Sunday. We are invited to wear jeans and T/shirts.

Smile: Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?" "Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life." The child thought about this for a moment, then said, "So why is the groom wearing black?"
