The Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent Candle

Leader: Salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone, the day is at hand.

Leader lights the Rose or (Pink) Candle along with the first two candles in silence.

Leader: Our Lord says “Surely I come quickly.”

Response: Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

Response: It is right to give God thanks and praise. Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us. Let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us.

Leader: We bless you, Eternal Father, giver of all good things, for you have drawn us away from darkness of sin and led us forward in the light of Christ. Grant us to purify ourselves as he is pure and to be found like him when we see him again, Christ our King.

Response: Amen

THE COLLECT - 3rd Sunday of Advent (Page 157 BCP) Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In the reading from the Old Testament we hear of a blessed time when God will overcome many of life’s shortcomings and frustrations.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Arlene Paul-Kellman 9:15a.m. - Jada-Amor Gittens

FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): Isaiah 65:17-25 Thus says the Lord God, "Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the child shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain, or bear children for calamity; for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the Lord, and their children with them. Before they call I will answer, while

they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; and dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain, says the Lord."

REFLECTION THE PSALM: A psalm of joy and hope sung to the Lord who restores the fortunes of God’s people.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 126 (7:30a.m. - Page 643 BCP) 1. WHEN the Lord turned again the captivity of Sion : then were we like unto them that dream. 2. Then was our mouth filled with laughter : and our tongue with joy. 3. Then said they among the heathen : The Lord hath done great things for them. 4. Yea, the Lord hath done great things for us already : whereof we rejoice. 5. Turn our captivity, O Lord : as the rivers in the south. 6. They that sow in tears : shall reap in joy. 7. He that now goeth on his way weeping, and beareth forth good seed : shall doubtless come again with joy, and bring his sheaves with him.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: As he concludes his letter to the church in Thessalonica, Paul exhorts the new converts to be at peace with one another and to live joyfully and prayerfully in readiness for the Lord’s coming.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Norma Springer 9:15a.m. - Omeesha Roachford

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: 1 Thessalonians 5: (12-15) 16-28 [We beseech you, brethren, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all.] Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit, do not despise prophesying, but test everything; hold fast what is good, abstain from every form of evil. May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. Brethren, pray for us. Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. I adjure you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the brethren. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

GRADUAL HYMN - 369

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: In the opening passages of his Gospel the fourth evangelist firmly characterizes the mission of John the Baptist: he is the forerunner and witness to the Christ. He bears testimony to the one who is the life of all human life. John is not the Christ or a figure for Elijah or one of the other prophets. He prepares the Lord’s way and baptizes, while even now the one whom John is unworthy to serve stands unknown in their midst.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: John 1:6-8, 19-28

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" He confessed, he did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No." They said to him then, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, `Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said." Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah,

Page 4: The new fisherman december 14th, 2014

nor the prophet?" John answered them, "I baptize with water; but among you stands one whom you do not know, even he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Bidding Prayer

For light to know and to follow the truth, let us pray to the Lord.

Make the Church a powerful witness to the light that has come into the world…Through the preaching of the world…Through the preaching of the word, and through the water of baptism, may God’s people be gathered into one body.

Grant that the messengers of God may be heard throughout the world…Where material wealth and comfort abound in a spiritual wilderness, bring the light which reveals the true joy of living.

Make us messengers of the Gospel in our daily lives, and give strength to all in our community who labour to make known the mighty works of God.

Have mercy on all who suffer in body, mind or spirit…Let the light of hope shine through their darkness and give them comfort in their afflictions.

We give thanks for the departed who were cleansed by the water of baptism and have passed over the great water to eternal life…May they rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon them.

We offer our prayers in the name of Christ, the one Messiah. Amen.

The Meaning of the Advent Wreath

1st CANDLE – (purple) THE PROPHECY CANDLE or CANDLE OF HOPE – We can have hope because God is faithful and will keep the promises made to us. Our hope comes from God. “And again, Isaiah says, ‘The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him.’ May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:12-13)

2nd CANDLE – (purple) THE BETHLEHEM CANDLE or THE CANDLE OF PREPARATION – God kept his promise of a Savior who would be born in Bethlehem. Preparation means to “get ready”. Help us to be ready to welcome YOU, O GOD! “As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: ‘A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God’s salvation.‘ (Luke 3:4-6)

3rd CANDLE – (pink) THE SHEPHERD CANDLE or THE CANDLE OF JOY – The angels sang a message of JOY! “…and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.’ When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” (Luke 2:7-15)

4th CANDLE – (purple) THE ANGEL CANDLE or THE CANDLE OF LOVE – The angels announced the good news of a Savior. God sent his only Son to earth to save us, because he loves us! “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17)

Smile: When the new patient was settled comfortably on the couch, the psychiatrist began his therapy session. “I’m not aware of your problem,” the doctor said. “So perhaps, you should start at the very beginning.” “Of course.” replied the patient. “In the beginning, I created the Heavens and the Earth...”
