THE COLLECT - Proper 24 (Page 180 BCP) Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In our Old Testament reading the Lord anoints

Cyrus, king of Persia, to be God’s agent in freeing the chosen people from exile.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Arlene Paul-Kellman 9:15a.m. - Sophia Waterman

FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): Isaiah 45:1-7

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and ungird the loins of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed: "I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut asunder the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I gird you, though you do not know me, that men may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe, I am the LORD, who do all these things.”

REFLECTION THE PSALM: A song to the Lord, the Creator and Ruler of all nations,

in which the whole world is invited to join.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 96 (7:30a.m. - Page 594 BCP)

1. O SING unto the Lord a new song : sing unto the Lord, all the whole earth. 2. Sing unto the Lord, and praise his Name : be telling of his salvation from day to day. 3. Declare his honour unto the heathen : and his wonders unto all people. 4. For the Lord is great, and cannot worthily be praised : he is more to be feared than all gods. 5. As for all the gods of the heathen, they are but idols : but it is the Lord that made the heavens. 6. Glory and worship are before him : power and honour are in his sanctuary. 7. Ascribe unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people : ascribe unto the Lord worship and power. 8. Ascribe unto the Lord the honour due unto his Name : bring presents, and come into his courts.

9. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness : let the whole earth stand in awe of him. 10. Tell it out among the heathen that the Lord is King : and that it is he who hath made the round world so fast that it cannot be moved; and how that he shall judge the people righteously. 11. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad : let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is. 12. Let the field be joyful, and all that is in it : then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice before the Lord. 13. For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth : and with righteousness to judge the world, and the people with his truth. REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In company with Silvanus and Timothy, Paul

greets the new Christians of Thessalonica, gives thanks for their faith and their

conversion from idols to the worship of the true and living God.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Janice Turton 9:15a.m. - Church Army

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. We give thanks to God always for you all, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brethren beloved by God, that he has chosen you; for our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit; so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say any-thing. For they themselves report concerning us what a welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

GRADUAL HYMN - 838

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: In our Gospel lesson Jesus answers a question about

taxation by teaching that people should pay what belongs to the Emperor to the

Emperor and the things of God to God. The question was meant as a trap. If Jesus

advised the paying of taxes to the occupying Roman powers, many Jews would have

considered him a collaborator. Had he counseled non-payment, the Herodian servants of

the Romans could accuse him of sedition. On one level Jesus’ answer is a master stroke of

clever ambiguity, but it also causes his hearers to reflect more deeply on their

responsibility to God and the State. Perhaps the saying suggests that government has it

legitimate yet limited claims. It must not be given the highest allegiance.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Matthew 22:15-22

The Pharisees went and took counsel how to entangle Jesus in his talk. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are true, and teach the way of God truthfully, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the money for the tax." And they brought him a coin. And Jesus

said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They said, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." When they heard it, they marveled; and they left him and went away.

Bidding Prayer

For peace and harmony in the Church and in the world let us pray to the Lord.

Grant that the Church shall always bear witness to God as supreme, rendering the honour and worship that are his due…May all Christian people show forth their faith by their words and by their deeds.

We pray for justice and honest dealing between nations and between individuals…Give to those in authority the wisdom to know the limits of their power and to demand no more than is right.

Bless us, our families, neighbours and friends, with obedience in all things lawful and courage to resist injustice…Bless those who manage the finances of this community and give them right judgement in all their decisions.

Have mercy on all who bear heavy burdens of taxation for the benefit of the few and not for the common good…Guide and strengthen those whose Christian allegiance is divided and uncertain, and keep them in the way of truth.

We give thanks for the departed who have rendered their duty in this world and gone to their rest…Give them peace in the realm where nothing can challenge their whole loyalty to their God and Saviour.

May Christ guide us in all our decisions and accept our prayers which we offer in his name. Amen.

Church Army Prayer

O Lord our heavenly father whose son Jesus Christ came not to be ministered unto but to minister, we ask to bless all members of the Church Army in this and other lands that following in the steps of your son and giving themselves to the service of their fellowmen, they may be inspired by your love and so worthily minister in your name, to the fallen, the friendless, and the needy for the sake of the same your son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Pink Sunday

The third Sunday in Advent is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the lighting of the Rose Candle in the Advent Wreath. This year it is our intention to focus on the subject of Breast Cancer, which is a challenge for many women in our society and Church. It is hoped that we will use ‘Pink’ as the liturgical colour for the day; with the Mothers’ Union donating a pink chasuble to be worn by the Clergy on the day. Two pink stoles, matching Burse and Chalice Veil will be much appreciated. With members wearing pink to show solidarity and prayerful support of sufferers. This gives a wonderful opportunity to bring our liturgy in line with this important aspect of human life. I am asking for your support in making this a meaningful celebration.

Casual Sunday

The Sunday before Christmas, the fourth Sunday of Advent will be celebrated as casual

Sunday. We are invited to wear jeans and T/shirts.
